[pestlist] pestlist update - quick and extended versions
This is a message from the Museumpests.net List. To post to this list send it as an email to pestlist@museumpests.net To unsubscribe look at the footer of this email. --- Hello - the pestlist is changing. I am changing it now (4:00pm est) it may take a few hours to finish changing. QUICK VERSION - 1. Send emails to pestl...@googlegroups.com <mailto:pestl...@googlegroups.com> NOT pestlist@museumpests.net <mailto:pestlist@museumpests.net> 2. When you reply to an email hit REPLY ALL not just reply. 3. If you have a mail rule or filter set you may need to update it. EXTENDED VERSION - In recent years the amount of bouncing and rejecting of emails sent to the pestlist has increased. This has mostly been due to increased spam filtering and malware checking. Over the past months I have been looking at other systems we could use to continue the list as close as possible to it's existing process but with fewer problems. I have decided to move the list to Google Groups. I will be moving it today. There are three changes you should be aware of - first, the new email address will be pestl...@googlegroups.com <mailto:pestl...@googlegroups.com> Second - when you receive a message or question from the list and you want to reply with a comment or answer you must hit REPLY ALL for it to go to the whole list. If you just hit reply it will only go back to the person that originated the question. Although this isn't terrible it has probably helped many to be able to see a question and answer to increase their knowledge in identifying pests and general how to information. Third - if you have any mail filters that redirect your pestlist email to a particular folder or location you may have to change how that rule works. The subject line may look a little different than it has in the soon to be past. I will put something up that will remind you of the new address if you do forget and send to the soon to be old address pestlist@museumpests.net <mailto:pestlist@museumpests.net> . Leon . This is a message from the Museumpests.net List. To post to this list send it as an email to pestlist@museumpests.net To unsubscribe look at the footer of this email. --- Hello - I am going to move the pestlist to a different mail server. Each time the current company introduces an update it seems to have an effect on our list and is just too much of an interruption. I will happen in the next hour (it's 10:10am est here). (if you're not interested in why, you can stop here.) I don't exactly remember why we moved it 4 or 5 years ago, I think it was something to do with the digest mode - but I checked and we have nobody using the digest mode, so back we go. Also - as you may have seen in Pascal's email - there was an update that dropped people from the list automatically. It was a "feature" to drop an account if their delivery bounced more 2 times. Bounces are a natural occurrence in email systems - most servers automatically retry every 15 minutes or the first hour so you never see the effect of it. But many of our subscribers got dropped. So - if you know anyone that was on the list and they are not getting emails again, please have them drop me a line and I'll put them back in - only because it will take a day to get the self signup system going again. [pestlist] new Zpest Tracker program
Hello - I am announcing that I have written and published a new Zpest Tracker program. It is up and running at http://zpesttracker.com. About five years ago I published Collection Pests (http://collectionpests.com - alive and well) but in listening to the feedback I have heard that it may be a bit more than many needed in a pest tracking system. Zpest Tracker was written with this in mind - simple, but useful. It has the basic Zpest interface with an enhanced reporting system. If you know anyone that uses the old Zpest program please let them know that this is available. Due to updates in operating systems Zpest can be very tricky (if not impossible) to get running on newer systems - and it was never easily available on Apple products. Zpest Tracker being an online system it can be used from most any browser. Multi location is also possible if you are a consultant to more than one location and would like one place to track all of your locations. I know that there are many of you that have or still use the original Zpest program. We have created the tools needed to import the data from the old to the new system. Please contact me with any questions, Thank You - leon ...
[pestlist] Email list information
Hello All - There are two reasons for this post to the list - 1st is I needed to test the list so this is something to say. 2nd - I found an answer to a problem that creeped into the list recently. We've recently had a few people question why they were not receiving anything from the pestlist. Our testing worked - we were unable to find any problems - until now. In one of the updates a new feature was added that would automatically remove you from the list if your email bounced too many times. In some ways this was a good thing - those that changed their emails and not tell us where automatically removed from the list. But there are other reasons that bounces happen - your service provider puts in new, tighter spam filtering - and we get bounced. AOL is especially good for this one. The down side was that the default setting was 2, just a bit low for real life - all networks have problems sometimes and over a few months a couple bounces is not unreasonable. In a normal mail situation if you email gets bounced the service will try to send it multiple times - some for up to three days - before officially bouncing it but the default system limit of 2 times didn't work. I found this new feature today and decided that we could turn it off in our situation, we'll just keep an eye on the bounces and see if there is a good limit for us or if we can just leave it off. So you have to admit this was way more interesting than "This is a test." And after typing that and looking at it I go, well maybe not. Leon Zak l...@zaks.com <mailto:l...@zaks.com> http://zaks.com

We seek to bring together preservation organizations, professionals, and information resources to support the critical work of collection care. We consider preservation as an umbrella concept that covers both preventive care and conservation treatments to achieve stabilization. We wish to foster dynamic exchange among collaborators engaged in preventive care, grow the body of preventive care knowledge and disseminate this knowledge to support the work of all collection care practitioners, conservators, and allied professions. * Give us input, your ideas and suggestions for future projects. You can connect with us at the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC) meeting in Albuquerque (May 8-11, 2012). We'll be wearing light blue ribbons on our nametags. We're friendly folk and will be eager to speak with you about the CCN. Please attend the Outreach to Allies session planned Wednesday, May 9th from 2 - 5:30pm. CCN is participating as part of this session. As a springboard for your thoughts we intend to show brief videos of stakeholders in the preservation field and discuss the dilemmas that the individual's perspective brings. Immediately following the session, join us at the CCN reception. Refreshments and a cash bar will keep us sustained while we continue to collect your thoughts and ideas. * If we miss you in Albuquerque, view the videos from the Outreach to Allies session on our webpage (http://www.conservation-us.org/collectioncare) and send us your ideas. * Join us. If you are already a member of AIC, contact Ruth Seyler, (rseyler [at] conservation-us [dot] org) and request that she add you to the CCN (there is no additional cost for the network). I've always thought it would be a valuable resource and an interesting combination of data. My CollectionPests.com currently does pest tracking and trap location mapping. The importing of environmental data to be integrated with the pest count data is being worked on for release mid 2012. >From that point the next step would be to revive the Artifact Tracker (artifacttracker.com) project and meld all three information databases together. [pestlist] apps update
This is a message from the Museumpests List. It is published in the Android Market: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.zaks.collectionpestsref2 <https://market.android.com/details?id=com.zaks.collectionpestsref2&feature= search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS56YWtzLmNvbGxlY3Rpb25wZXN0c3JlZjIiXQ. .> &feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS56YWtzLmNvbGxlY3Rpb25wZXN0c3 JlZjIiXQ.. I submitted it to the Apple App Store. It was technically OK but not accepted to be in the app store because they don't think the market size is large enough. It's a free app. So it means Apple won't make any money off of it so they don't want to list it. They don't say how big "big enough" is. What I can do is re-write it as an HTML5 app - that means it becomes a web page instead of being an app. (HTML5 is a specification for the coding used to create the web page as well as the browser. Most browsers in use support it.) This should work OK, HTML5 spec says it should be able to be cached so it can be used in places without internet connectivity. I'll announce when it's available. I've also been in contact with Christina Cain from the University of Colorado Museum and she has given permission for her Id cards to be put in an app. I've got that completed and am testing it now. It should be in the Android Market next week and of course I'll have to do it in HTML5 for the iPhone/iPad/iPod's. I think the Flash Cards we have listed on the Museumpests.net site by Sir Sanford Fleming College students would be a great resource to have available and a perfect fit for the Smartphone/pad format. If someone has a contact there that I could connect with that would be helpful. Also we're open to any app ideas. [pestlist] Collection Pests Reference tool for smartphones
This is a message from the Museumpests List. To post to this list send it as an email to pestlist@museumpests.net To unsubscribe please look at the footer of this email. --- Hello - I've written a Smartphone / tablet app that I think is a good beginning reference tool. The app lets you browse through a list that currently has 28 collection type pests. There is information about pest - common name, scientific name, order, risk, ecotype and an image. Tapping the image brings a zoomable image that will let you get up close and able to see some nice detail of the pest. It's currently available for the Android type phones and tablets and I've got a version for the Apple series of phones and pads. The Apple apps need to go through an approval process so it will be a couple weeks before it's available. This version is free and if you have an Android running phone or tablet (Version 2.2 and up) I have submitted it to the Android Market but I'm not sure how long it will take to be available through their approval process. In the meantime it can be downloaded at http://collectionpests.com/apps/collectionpestsreference.apk You will have to turn on the feature of your Android to allow third party tools to be installed. I've run it on the Android Atrix Smartphone and the Pandigital 7" $149 tablet, I think it's also the one that has been used as a $79 special offer. I figured I could test it and the shoppers at the local Best Buy will have something interesting to look on the holiday display unit. Next versions are aimed at having the ability to have the list added to by users, community shared lists and private lists. Ultimately being able to enter pests tracking information through smart device I think would be very useful. With cameras and gps built in they can now incorporate what we talked about years ago. If you don't have mouse traps set it could easily happen that you have mice without actually seeing one. I would also track mouse damage although there's bound to be droppings around any damage. There is a Notes field with each observation so in the case of damage there would be some merit to tracking it and describing it in the notes field. Then you've got a tracking of the damage history. We do have a search in the works that will let you pull all records that have a particular word or phrase in the notes field. We are expanding the export that is currently by start and end date to include filtering by other fields. As far as the tracking a reduction to frass of a pest I'll leave that to those more knowledgeable. One dilemma I've not found a great solution to in any tracking method (and I'm hoping someone may have a suggestion) is how to track things of note when there is no actual body count available on the sticky traps -- perhaps mouse droppings, or a previously trapped insect subsequently being reduced to a frass pile by some other insect the next month. Any thoughts? I appreciate the comments about my products and do pay attention to them. The current suggestions we've been working on were the ability to do a backup of your data to your location and the need to get an Excel accessible export. We now have answers for both. Under the utilities section there is now a one click, all inclusive backup. This is a backup that we can restore your site from. It is not readily human readable, it is made for our restore system to read. This is meant for catastrophic situations - someone mistakenly goes through and deletes a large amount of data for example. We still backup the whole site each night for our purposes. For the Excel export we've added a link on the Reports page to an Export page. There are two options on this page. The first will let you define a start and end observation date (defaulting to your first and last observations entered) and then you can download the information in a CSV file format that can easily be imported into Excel. Once in Excel it can be sorted, graphed, printed and more. The second option is a complete download of all of your images - Maps, Icons, Photos etc. They are in the size and format that they were when you uploaded them. To answer the mapping concern - we have incorporated something that we think will work for many. Under the Map section you can upload a jpeg version of your floor map. Our aim was to make a system that was easy to use but did not require additional software. Once the map is upload you can add icons to the map that represent your traps. Along with a link to the map location there is a link to the trap details. We are looking for a good database system for recording IPM information. We had been using Zak's ZPest software for Windows and exporting the data into excel. This was a pretty slow process however and we are now experimenting with an online database by the same developer at collectionpests.com. This too seems to have it's drawbacks and I am wondering if anyone uses it and what their thoughts are. I would also like to know if anyone uses other programs or databases that they could recommend. We have about 80 sticky traps throughout our museum and check them every two months, recording each insect that we find. Then we map any high risk incidents using photoshop. The whole process takes 2-3 days and I would be grateful for any time saving suggestions you might have. Thank you, Katy Cor

[pestlist] What a mess - the digest mode. (and I finally typed it correctly)
First - Please - DO NOT respond to this on the list, hitting reply sends it back to everyone on the list, not to just me. Short version: You're off the digest mode and it is turned off because the digest mode didn't work like we thought it would, I'll try to figure it out and let you know when it's OK. You should also know that if you have an auto-responder that responds to the list I will remove your address from the list. You don't need to read the rest of this for the short version. The explanation version: The email list system is part of a mail program I've been using for almost 15 years and it is used by Intuit (Quicken), Tulane, WebMD, Harley-Davidson, Boston Celtics, and on and on - no slouch program. You would have thought that with that kind of endorsement the list manager would be close to perfect. So much for that. Anyway, I've taken everyone out of the digest mode and put you back in the standard mode while I figure out what is going on with it. I'm going to be talking with the company and if it can be fixed I'll try the test list first that I didn't think I needed to do based on their history. The company is Ipswitch if you wanted to know. It looked like any images included with emails sent to the list, and that includes graphics with signatures, were delivered in a system called "base 64" which although looking like gibberish was the way you had to encode and send images way back in the beginning of the net. This is a group that should be OK with "old" stuff but when it comes to this we'll make an exception and see if we can make it "new". leon ... Leon Zak ZAK Software Inc. http://zaks.com
[pestlist] It's set, votes are in, decision is made.
First, I apologize for not saying this in the first email, if you want to reply please reply directly to me, l...@zaks.com, NOT the list. The results are in and the mode will be DAILY. What this means is IF you choose the digest mode you will get one email a day with all of the in it. If you do not subscribe you will continue to receive the emails as they come in. To change TO the digest mode send an email to imail...@museumpests.net and in the body of the email put: set mode digest pestlist If you want to change to the standard mode set an email to imail...@musumpests.net and put: set mode standard pestlist You may switch as often as you wish, but you MUST send the email from the same address that you are signed up with. Any questions (if you're receiving this right now, about 1:50pm est, then you are in the standard - non digest - mode) please send an email directly to me, not the list - meaning - don't just hit reply to this. [pestlist] Digets Mode
Hello all - I'm am setting up digest capabilities for this list. Digest mode (and it is optional by user) will save the emails that have come in over a certain period and then mail them to you all at once. If the period is set to one day, all emails coming in that day would be sent to you at one time at the end of the day. I can set the digest period and the send time. Digest period options are: daily, weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. If you think you'd like to use the digest mode, please let me know which period you would prefer - I can only set it to one.
