Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] SB Radio won't power up, but is ticking?
My radio is now just ticking as of yesterday...was listening to a stream and...croak. I see several threads involving this issue but I haven't yet seen if anyone has been able to fix the problem. I have to run something else to a shop one of these days and am wondering if there's any point in bringing the Radio along. atrocity's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16009 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101548 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] SB Radio won't power up, but is ticking?
I found a bench-level repair guy who was willing to look at it, and he thinks it is a MOSFET: "found a short across the main power input" "having a rough time identifying the exact part number of the MOSFET that's failing" So, we'll see where this goes. If this goes well, I have a bass amp he can look at, too. I usually order from Digi-Key. They charge actual shipping, and I choose USPS first class on checkout. As I mentioned, in the past I worked for more than one electronics and manufacturing firm and was Bill of Materials supervisor, even. I can fix the pin out of connectors and I can do nearly anything, but now it has to be more "at the consumer level." I never had a "hobbyist" shop because I had the real shop, at work. And that's why they don't even make cheap consumer electronics really serviceable anymoore the small surface mouth boards are one thing . But they probably don't even publish any kind of service manual or schematics ( to much work ) . The Bill of manufacturing for a Radio ( not the price ) is probably a tiny fraction of a work hour in the western world . So during warranty they just replace it and the broken ones goes to recycling . That is a bummer when you have legacy product with no current replacement what to do ? More expensive high end products products are serviceable , but they have a build that looks more like it used to be :) in the old days . My Meridian gear is modular on the inside , several sub boards that can be replaced and power supply module . I used to service industrial electronics large VSD system and stuff , but we exchanged whole circuit boards no soldering except in rare cases with really old stuff . On older products we could the board to our internal repair shop to get them fixed . But on more modern products no one repairs circuit boards it always makes more sense to get a new board , surface mount components and coating etc . And the coast of manufacturing is cheaper than repairing besides the quality standard can not be maintained if one tries to solder such a thing . If even possible to fault trace it's just a bunch if IC's nowadays ? You may need some specialised test equipment programmed to test that particular circuit board . Powers supply circuitry may be possible to follow if you got the skill and inclination , but if one of the smd circuits with like 200 legs on it seems to draw to much power how to be practical about that . So,it would be a hobby project to resurect such things good luck to anyone trying . A think the day of the repairshop is over , you just recycle stuff nowadays . OP keep us posted if do find out what's wrong , as there is no direct replacement we migth see more people needing this info . Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] SB Radio won't power up, but is ticking?
My comment was based on my experience as a domestic electrician. Some of the jobs I get asked to but have to turn down because they're just not worth doing even if charged less than my normal hourly rate. For me the cost of the "look at it and tell you its shagged" part could be off set against getting a cheap soldering iron and multimeter. I've got decent kit because I do use it on paying jobs, I'm an electrician but I do make my own LED strip lighting setups to fit in customers kitchens and the like but it's amazing what you can do with inexpensive tools. I'm all for saving equipment that's perfectly usable and arguably superior to current stuff so good luck rescuing it. jimbobvfr400's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=56857 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101548 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio
Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] SB Radio won't power up, but is ticking?
The other problem is getting a $1 item when there is a minimum order for components from the supplier. I told the shop I am willing to wait until it makes sense to tack this onto another order, and if they want me to bring back the radio and they can let it sit and confirm this is the part they think will resolve the issue, etc. I totally understand they don't care to go the lengths that I am willing to go to. When I had a C band satellite TV system, with the old school manual mover, I found the guy who fixed the police radios and we determined the rectifier on the mover had blown. Nothing like a cheap fix and 5 minutes, to keep electronics working. Now it is $25 or more for them to simply look at it, and another fee if they tell you it can't be fixed but you want them to take it as e-waste. I am determined not to put this in the landfill nor sell it to anyone else until I determine I can't bring it back to life. After all, aren't we all on this forum for the same reason: end of life products? I have a boom, a duet (receiver and remote), and this radio, as well as a replacement for it: a UE radio I booted to be a SB radio. I cannot give up, now! Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] SB Radio won't power up, but is ticking?
Thanks. When I picked up the radio on Thursday I mentioned I would use this info as follow up. The lady at the checkout counter made some statement about the part (regulator or something, there was a bit of a crowd) and I thought it would be on the paperwork, but it isn't. I will follow up with them next week. I actually worked for an electronic component manufacturer years ago, but have no access to a bench nor tools at this time. It burns my soul to pay through the nose for every "look at it" service charge. They don't seem to want to diagnose it like you would if it was your own equipment. A quick look, can't see what is wrong, move on. I think I might try to make friends with a guy a mile or so away that has a Ham Radio antenna - he obviously is "old school." Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] SB Radio won't power up, but is ticking?
Oh I remembered wrong, it was 1.5V not 1.2V. Anyway here's the part number: LP2985AIM5-1.5/NOPB It doesn't sound like this is your problem, though, it's probably a supply further upstream. To diagnose why something is drawing too much power I usually just leave it powered for a bit with a constant-current supply, and then I just feel around to see what part is too hot. Dollars to donuts the hot part is the one that has failed. rpress's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=31544 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101548 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio

The repair shop called late yesterday to tell me "It seems to be drawing too much power to the board and we can't figure out why, and it needs a whole new board, which is no longer available." If you know the part #, that would be great. I can take that info to them when I go to to pick it up, in case they want to try again. Thanks! Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] SB Radio won't power up, but is ticking?
I bought a (known) dead Radio on eBay, it was new, still had the plastic on it. Anyway the failed component was a 1.2V regulator into the Freescale CPU. I found a pin compatible chip from TI and it worked. If you find yours is shorted I can dig up the part number. Your ticking makes me think it's something shorted in the power supplies on the board inside, hence my comment above. rpress's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=31544 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101548 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio
Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] SB Radio won't power up, but is ticking?
I just dropped off the radio at a component-level repair shop two days ago. It will be at least a week. I will let you know. They told me they have had two of these in for repair. One was fixed and one was not. They stated it depends on what is wrong, since there are no parts available. The problem has to be a readily available component or something they can fix themselves, not an actual Logitech part.
