[SLUG] Re: 2 problems with Mandrake 9.1
I've used RedHat 8.0 for quite a well with no problem. Ive been using mandrake since the 7's, tried RH 9, friggin hate it :) 1. I can't use internet. I use a normal dial up server. i could make the connection, and DNS entried are updated in the resolv.conf but seems Mandrake still can't get names resolved. I can't even ping the DNS server. I configured the internet via the GUI, I didnt hack any files and it worked. Mandrake Control Center etc 2. My pc won't shut down. it will just hang at the Power Down point. I clicked the Halt button last nite b4 i went to bed and this morning the PC is still on. Yeah known bug, found it in there bugzilla. My work around is like: log out, log back into something other than KDE (i.e. WindowMaker) log out and halt works. bah just read what you said Mandrake may not like you hardware or something, when you see the text Power Down, its means it is now safe to turn you pc off. You see this in debian, depends how well mandrake sync's with the ACPI (advanced power stuff- its a windows designed thing but linux has dun a good job with it.) -- Simon Males [EMAIL PROTECTED] No More AOL CDs Australia - www.anticd.org -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group - http://slug.org.au/ More Info: http://lists.slug.org.au/listinfo/slug

change your cron entries so they pipe output to /dev/null. Eg 15 0 * * */foo/bar 21 /dev/null Alternatively, you could pipe output to a file where you check on it only when necessary. Or, you could just address the problems which are generating the warnings? [SLUG] LaTeX question, Linux command.
I was going to use a .jpg file in a figure in a LaTeX document, on the grounds that an.eps file would be too big. So I copied the method from Keith Reckdahl's Using Imported Graphics in LaTeX2e, ie., \documentclass[dvips,11pt]{report} \usepackage{graphicx} then use convert myfile.jpg myfile.eps to get a Bounding Box line, which subsequently becomes the only line in myfile.jpg.bb (and deleted myfile.eps) then \DeclareGraphicsRule{.jpg}{eps}{.jpg.bb}{`convert #1 'eps:-' } What *should* happen is that, at dvips, this latter command translates the .jpg file into an .eps file (specified by the eps: option) and sends the result to standard output (specified by the - specification). Except that it doesn't. What I get is:--- dvips: Failure to execute convert Myfile.jpg 'eps:-'; continuing I have this feeling that something is wrong with the \DeclareGraphicsRule in that part {`convert #1 'eps:-' }. Could anyone help, please? Regards, Bill Bennett. -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group - http://slug.org.au/ More Info: http://lists.slug.org.au/listinfo/slug
[SLUG] LaTeX and the booklet package.
I wanted to make a small booklet, so I used the booklet package. This package arranges the pages in booklet form. In an ideal world, I should be able to fold the (landscape) double sided page across the middle, followed by some judicious cropping and I have a booklet. In an ideal world. In a less than ideal world, I put the command \special{!TeXDict begin /Tumble true setpagedevice end} in the preamble and the pages are printed on both sides of a landscape leaf, in correct order, but they are not squared upon each other, ie., I can fold the middle of the booklet on one side, but this will not work for the pages on the back of the leaf, because I haven't folded in the middle. I can't help feeling that I'm missing something simple here, but such things make ideal worlds. Has anyone encountered this problem before? I don't have my cp of Goosens here to look up the graphics rule but it looks like you are wanting to use latex and generate postscript. An eps is not necessarily too big. Both convert and jpg2eps (which might even already be on your system as it comes with many teTeX distributions) just encapsulates the binary jpg and it wont be much bigger at all than the jpg. I recently bought a multifunction printer (inkjet (which is not what your looking for but anyway...) from HP (Officejet 4110: supported only via CVS compile, under Redhat 9 (+ fixes)). As far as I know HP are the only company which have any support for multifunctional devices under Linux. (ie: Brother, Canon, Epson *don't* (AFAIK)). If you are going to go HP you might want to check out: http://hpoj.sf.net/ (HP linux drivers) http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/ (HP's linux page +filters) Some other Linux printing resources: http://LinuxPrinting.org/ (all the linux printing info you could ever want) and in particular: http://www.linuxprinting.org/vendors.html (lists general vendor support) http://www.linuxprinting.org/suggested.html appears to have some good info as well which might help, and in particular (to contradict my earlier statement re Canon): For a working multifunction device, consider the Epson CX3200 and CX5200 (use kernel 2.4.21 or newer); or one of the HP OfficeJet or PSC devices supported by the HPOJ project such as the PSC 2150 or PSC 750. Avoid Lexmarks, Canons, and Brothers. (I don't think the Canon's have fax tho, :-( Erm, if you *really* want laser, HP I believe have some nice network printers (in the higher price range ~ $1,200 AU, which appear to work with any OS(?), they use things lie FTP + email to transmit data(?)). And in any case, if you find anything good or bad (*especially* if you find a cheaper multifunction laser ) could you post back to the list (and or myself?) I'd *really* link to know :-) I bought my printer from OfficeWorks (www.officeworks.com.au). I asked regarding printers under Linux (and both people I talked to about it even knew what Linux was!), they told me that I could return the printer if I couldn't get it to work. [SLUG] neat tricks used for the purposes of evil
Watch out for misconfigured webservers used to send spam. I was tuning some mailservers today, making the envelope checks quite tough, and adding some RBLs that we're interested in using. I noticed that there was a large queue of what looked like spam sitting in the deferred queue of one of our machines. All the messages had recipients in the aol domain and bogus senders, and had been deferred due to connection refused at the AOL mailserver. A quick awk+postsuper spell emptied the queue of the rogue messages, and the new rules were showing that more of these messages were not getting through. All good. What seemed interesting was that the source IP for most of these was another machine on the same subnet. netstat --inet -lnp | grep ':25 ' on the suspect machine showed a few httpd processes doing the connection to our newly locked down mailserver. What the hell? I reconfigured the webserver to enable mod_status, turned ExtendedStatus on, and checked out what the webserver was doing. A quick reload and a re-exec of the netstat command, then searching the server-status page for some of the suspect process ids showed that the particular PID at that time was servicing a HTTP POST to the IP of the mailserver on port 25. What the hell? A little bit more investigating showed that the webserver had mod_proxy incorrectly configured. The access controls were allowing anyone to proxy anything to anywhere... including allowing random people to submit posts to random urls... random urls that included every MX listed in the same subnet. We also found a further misconfiguration with the mailserver that would have allowed it to act as a limited relay, for the purposes of this particular spammer. So, it was a neat hack that got performed, and I'm impressed by whoever came up with the idea. I'm guessing however that the specific spammer here had brute-forced to find mailservers on the same subnet as the webserver, and it looks like the spoofing was done by using the domains that this mailserver is MX for, as the from address in the envelope -- again just brute-forcing possible values until it works. I'm wondering now how wide-spread this proxy spam attack is. So, does anyone know how to detect if a webserver is an open proxy just by connecting to it? Or is that another thing that would be brute-forced? I suspect not, otherwise there'd be a lot of proxied POST attempts showing up in the logs. -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://spacepants.org/jaq.gpg -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group - http://slug.org.au/ More Info: http://lists.slug.org.au/listinfo/slug

I suggested a Linux Box for the server, because I always recommended Linux. He has given me an IBM Aptiva for the server hardware (perfect), a netgear wireless Hub and a WG311 wireless LAN card for the server. He will use a Toshiba Laptop running XPoo to access all this wireless goodness. PROBLEM: I can't seem to find a driver or generic driver for this card. The reason it not shutting down is because you didn't set acpi to be activated in the boot manager on the install (there is a small tick box). To fix this is pretty simple, 1. Go into Mandrake Control Center click on the Boot icon then click on DrakBoot then click on configure make sure Enable apci [X] is marked. Now save and and dont exit Mandrake Control Center 2. Now go to Software Management then click on the + RpmDrake in the search box enter acpi in the search box, click on [search], install acpid and the acpi module if its there. 3. Now exit that part of Mandrake Control and go to System then click on DrakXServices make sure acpi and acpid are both marked [X] to start on boot and then save and exit and reboot. Re: [SLUG] Perl configured, but Apt tells me it's not.
Been there before. Debian's routing failure to keep anything like up to date with perl versions is my only serious gripe with Debian. As you're discovering, trying to get Debian to work with a later version of perl can be rather trying. In the past I've installed (from source) a more recent verison of perl than what Debian used. The problems with apt-get et. al. can be dealt with by making sure that you're newly installed perl knows to look in the directories where debian's stuff is installed. You should probably do that as part of compiling perl, but you can often get by with using the PERL5LIB environment variable. Problem is that PERL5LIB puts directories at the head of the list of places to search where you really want them at the tail of the list so they act as a fallback for stuff where newer versions are not found. So it's better to get it right when compiling perl. You'll also find that there's an ongoing issue due to debian installing libraries for the old perl. OFten it makes no difference (so long as perl searches the old library directories), but where there are binary components, you will need to install the perl modules yourself from CPAN. 'Tux:~# apt-get install -f -u dist-upgrade --fix-broken' aborted with Debconf: Perl may be unconfigured. Can't locate strict.pm in @INC ... Looks like whichever perl you are running is not finding its library directories. strict is part of the base perl libraries, and if you're not finding it then most of perl's functionality is probably failing. `perl -V` should show you where perl is looking for its libraries. Check that the libraries are actually where perl thinks they should be. I managed to get Lynx working by moving a missing file into its correct place and downloaded and configured Perl 5.8.0 from www.cpan.org following the instructions in /home. The only thing I did not do was 'make distclean' 'make realclean' as I had not built Perl before. However, when I now try 'Tux:~# apt-get install -f -u dist-upgrade --fix-broken' I get Perl may be unconfigured, can't locate Debconf/Log.pm in @INC (@INC contains /usr/local/lib/perl5/5.8.0). @INC needs to contain a good deal more than that. Usually there's 5 or 6 directories. ... but I find ./usr/perl5/Debconf/Log.pm where I inspected it via vi ! right so '/usr/perl5' needs to be one of the entries in @INC. Preferably about the end of the list. Take a look in your /usr/bin and /usr/local/bin directories, and you'll probably find a few versions of perl. eg you might find /usr/bin/perl5.6.0 which debian installed, and /usr/local/bin/perl5.8.0 if you installed 5.8.0 from source and didn't tell it to put perl somewhere else. run perlversion -V for each of these and see where debian's perl is looking for libraries. You'll probably have to re-compile perl5.8.0 and tell it to add all of these to the list of directories to search for libraries. How do I get 'Tux:~# apt-get install -f -u dist-upgrade --fix-broken' to work in order to get the system working again ? You might be able to just change the #! line in the script to use the old perl. eg: #!/usr/bin/perl5.6.0 Andrew McNaughton -- No added Sugar. Not tested on animals. May contain traces of Nuts. [SLUG] Perl5.8 installed; Apt preconfigures, but fails to install.
Hi, thanks for trying to help. I kept reading the apt error messages and trying to fix them. I moved a number of Perl files and directories to where Apt wanted them but it kept preconfiguring pkgs but Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) /etc/apt/apt.conf currently has the line APT::Cache-Limit 4; that is 400Mb, so space is not likely to be an issue. 'apt-get install perl' gave me the response 'perl is the newest version' Tryng to remove perl threatened to remove half of the installed files, if not more. *** I am ready to continue the process of correcting apt's error messages but they now flash by too quickly to be legible and there is no way I'm aware of, in the absence of a WM in console mode, of scrolling back and reading in detail. Can they be viewed in a file somewhere? I downloaded 'stable.tar.gz. from www.cpan.org to /home and unpacked it to form 'perl-5.8.0' - to create space in /usr Following Andrew McNaughton's advice I had a look at /usr/bin and /usr/local/bin but the only version of perl available was 5.8.0 What I DO have is my previous system mounted in a removable drive as subdirectory 'cyberia' which contains 5.6.0 ... Eg '.cyberia/share/perl5/Debconf/Config.pm' I tried to run perl version -V Tux:/usr/local/bin perl perl5.8.0 -V Unrecognised character \x7F at perl5.8.0 line 1 I had the same response whether it was 'perl' or 'perl-5.8.0' or from within /home/perl-5.8.0 or /home, or /usr/bin, or /usr/local/bin but using 'perl5.6.0' received Can't open perl script perl5.6.0: No such file or directory In sum, I'm starting to contemplate reinstalling Debian, something I am prepared to go to lengths to avoid because I would lose a lot of hard-won material, because I'm living with an 80 yr old who is only starting to get over her computer-phobia, and because I also have other things to do. Any constructive suggestions would be appreciated. [SLUG] how to adapt this iptables setup?
Yes, I'm cross-posting. But it's kind of a cross-question. I'm working with a copy of Real World Linux Security, 2ed. by Bob Toxen. Right now, I'm working on getting his iptables firewall up. He gives instructions for installing it onto RedHat, SuSE, Mandrake, Slackware. I am using Debian Woody with backports, and there are some differences in the init scripts. His system comes in two/three parts. There's an iptables_pre script which fits simply into the Debian init system - put it in /etc/init.d and use update-rc.d defaults to plug in the symlinks so it runs before the network is up. It locks everything closed and optionally has support for alternatives to dhclient if that's not what I use. The second/third parts run after the network is up. He writes: Now that the iptables_pre script will protect the system while the network interfaces are being brought up, it is time to arrange for the main script, rc.fwsoho ... to be invoked on bootup. While we could invoke it the same way we invoked iptables_pre, instead we will use a real rc.d-style script to invoke it. This rc.d-style script is based on Red Hat 7.3 iptables startup script but has been modified to generate a message and error exit if IP Tables is not available. He instructs me to copy rc.fwsoho into /etc/rc.d, then put iptables (script) into init.d and symlink it in (the update-rc.d step in Debian). iptables is hard coded to call /etc/rc.d/rc.fwsoho on the appropriate start. Ok. There is no /etc/rc.d in my Debian system. /etc/rcX.d has some meaning beyond just being another place to gather files - it corresponds to runlevel X, and gets swept automatically as the system passes through that runlevel. What is the meaning and equivalent of /etc/rc.d? The other directories referenced appear to exist. To those who want to tell me why I shouldn't use his approach, I welcome the comments, I'll learn from them. But please also tell me the answers to the questions above, so I can get a context to put it all in.
