Re: [talk-ph] mangroves, tidal lands
@ ed, I guess the right tag would be: natural=wetland wetland=mangrove http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mangrove Didn't saw that page when I tagged them last year. Changing tags now. The natural:wetland does not render as a green patch when it is on the water side of the coastline. shall I use landuse:forest instead of natural:wetland instead? But I encountered the mangrove areas at Alburquerque, Bohol and the mangroves (seen on wms Lansat) are currently lying on the ocean side. The current coastline is along the actual edge of what is definitely the actual land. I have personally seen the coast myself when I was in the Albuquerque area. http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=9.6127lon=123.954zoom=14layers=B000FTF Question: Shall I move the coastline seaward so that the mangroves would apear inland? IMO, no. Some mangroves in Lian, Batangas are more on the sea side. Hence, I didn't move the the coastline. http://osm.org/go/4yfxfytF5- I've walked around these mangroves stands for two full days. This would in a way state that mangroves (or tidelands) are land and thereby also state that coastlines for tidal lands and flats are to be drawn using the exposed areas during the lowest low tide (not just the mean tide as this will cut some mangrove areas in half). Classic case for tidal flats are in Calatagan, where the low tide exposes an additional 150+m of land. I have this similar case in Talim Bay (Lian, Batangas). During low tides, the inter-tidal flats (locally known as tangkulan) are in hundreds of meters from the mean coast. http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1440/541589816_bf5bf812a2_b.jpg Also, the above considers that some islands become land only on low tides. The if in doubt, map as land mantra applies only if you're unfamiliar with the area. For everything else, it's your call provided you have verified on the ground. [talk-ph] cebu map errors
hi! just came back from a recent trip in Cebu City...here are some of my observations on OSM there: some of major roads i passed by between cebu city, mandaue, and the airport have no names (even long portions of M.L. Quezon highway leading to Mactan shrine) Some segments of Juan Luna Avenue, including the SM Cebu segment, has a center island therefore should be depicted as two separate ways . this will mess up routing in the area as well and considering it's a frequently visited place I will correct the missing names later but, again, I can't make corrections on Juan Luna though, better let a local edit it -- --- I explore, therefore I blog. http://www.backpackingphilippines.com ___ talk-ph mailing list talk-ph@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ph

Although wiki theoretically can be used this way, it is not the best tool for this job and in practice won't work, except for the regular wiki users (and we want the help for all OSM users). The same things can be done with wiki, web forum, mailing lists and the 'StackOverflow-like' software as now used on 'help.openstreetmap.org'. All of them were designed for a specific uses and most of them were abused for other tasks. And that usually doesn't work well. Wiki is good for writing of documentation, but not that good for discussion and question/answer interaction. It is effective for those task for people 'thinking wiki', but won't be good for a random user that comes there. Similarly, web forum is great for 'free discussion' and I have seen projects that used that also for generic documentation, but I hated that. It worked well for the regular forum visitors, but not for someone that came there for a piece of information. Also, where coming for an answer for specific question a web forum is not ideal – you don't know which section to look in and the question could be already asked and answered somewhere deep in a thread. That is why StackOverflow and similar sites are so successful recently – for the very task of asking and answering questions they are just better than a wiki, a mailing list or a web forum. This doesn't mean they make wiki, mailing lists and web forums obsolete – all of these may coexist and take advantage of each other (answers linking to wiki, forum redirecting to an answer). I actually like the idea of Q+A sites and have already started to use this one. However, the problem is that the different platforms can only coexist well if questions get asked in (or moved to) the correct place. For example, I've seen people ask questions on obscure wiki talk pages, where they remained unanswered until someone happened to visit that talk page weeks later (and even when they aren't forgotten, using a wiki to imitate forum software is rather ugly). Similarly, diaries seem to be abused for forum-like questions. As I understand it, a Q+A site should be used for questions that can, in principle, be answered by a *single* post, if that post is well-written, comprehensive and factually correct. However, there are already questions on help.* that ask for personal preferences or opinions, or are likely to start discussions. Imo, there needs to be some mechanism to guide people to the right place for asking their questions, or moderation to move the question to the platform that's best suited for it. Re: [OSM-talk] Comprehensive set of GPS track logs
You might want to take a look at the doroga tv user on OSM. A while ago they started automatically uploading hundreds of traces. I don't know where they got the traces from but it was my impression that they were from some kind of automatic tracking system in vehicles. They ended up completely hosing the OSM GPX importer process and stopped the uploads but there are several hundred traces available: http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/doroga%20tv/traces On Sun, Jul 11, 2010 at 4:34 PM, Lukas Kabrt lu...@kabrt.cz wrote: Hi, I am student working on the GSoC project - Travel time analysis [1], [2]. [Talk-br] Fwd: [OSM-talk] Potlatch 2 Public Alpha
-- Forwarded message -- From: Richard Fairhurst rich...@systemed.net Date: Sat, Jul 10, 2010 at 3:57 AM Subject: [OSM-talk] Potlatch 2 Public Alpha To: t...@openstreetmap.org Hi all, (Deep breath) I'm delighted to unveil a test version of Potlatch 2, the all-new, completely rewritten version of OpenStreetMap's online editor. You can play with it at http://www.geowiki.com/ . It talks to the main OSM server and you can make real edits with it. This is a public alpha. This means it's an early version of the software and there are lots of bugs in it. Performance leaves a whole lot to be desired. It _will_ eat your memory, and it may freeze up or crash. Presets for ways don't generally have icons - either that or they're a bit sketchy. There's no documentation. It's an experimental release for people who already have experience using Potlatch and know what they're doing. It's not for newbies - yet! But here's some of the cool stuff it does: - super friendly tagging system - WYSIWYG map display with names on roads and the like - powerful editing tools like 'make right-angled', 'create parallel line' and so on - vector backgrounds so you can manually bring in .osm files, shapefiles and so on - dedicated turn restriction and route editors - really good relations support It's not just a general-purpose editor: you can use it to create your own editor with your favourite presets, icons, backgrounds and rendering. Everything is in easily configurable files, and it talks OAuth so people can log into the OSM server securely from outside. We hope that people will use it to build cycle-specific editors, public transport editors, fix unnamed roads editors... all of that. It's a foundation for people to do more cool stuff with OSM. Potlatch 2 has only been possible thanks to the contributions, in particular, of Dave Stubbs and Andy Allan. Dave has built a terrific architecture for the program in general, way beyond anything I could ever think up, and in particular for the tagging system. Andy has given it a relation editor so much more powerful than P1 ever had, niggled away at a zillion little bugs, and given the project the impetus it needed. Lots of other people have helped as well: Twain47 (Mr Nominatim) contributed some excellent icons, Matt wrote the superb quadrilateralise function, Shaun added Big Concrete Blocks et al to the presets, and loads of others have helped. I'm delighted to only be one of the cast and think it augurs really well for the future. So what now? You _will_ find a really obvious bug about five seconds into using it. I guarantee it. Please use the wiki pages to report it: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Potlatch_2 . There's three pages for filing bugs so we can prioritise which to fix first. It's all open source (obviously) in a proper language (ActionScript 3) with a real framework (Flex) and an open source compiler (Flex Open Source SDK). If you would like to get involved with coding it: \o/, woo and yay. If you'd like just to improve the presets and the stylesheets, \o/ woo and yay too - you don't need to program for that. We have a mailing list, potlatch-dev (http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/potlatch-dev) to talk about development of whatever stripe.
Deja, Vilniaus ten pasirinkti nepavyksta. FAQ sako: MapOSMatic uses the OpenStreetMap (OSM) database and will accept to render cities based on their name only if a few criteria are met. First, the name requested has to be close to that of a way known to the OSM database: we use the Nominatim service for that. Moreover, the OSM entry associated with that way has to be tagged with admin_level=8 and boundary=administrative. So, if you see a result that corresponds to what you're looking for but you are not allowed to select it, then it most probably means that it does not meet the previous criteria in the OSM database. To be able to select these results, you or an OSM contributor will have to update the OSM database. You can find more information about these tags on http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:admin_level.
___ Talk-fr mailing list Talk-fr@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-fr
