Having exactly the same problem describe in the initial post ever since
I upgraded from hardy to Intrepid with gnome and an nvidia card. I also
have dual monitors. I doubt it is kernel related.

[Bug 296050] Re: The OTR plugin is totally untranslated

2009-03-05 Thread Timo Jyrinki
This should get into Ubuntu as soon as possible. The upload should
contain .pot file, since that's the only way translations can be done
for a Ubuntu release (not only upstream translations included).

As you can see at
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/+source/pidgin-
otr/+imports , there are .po files in queue but no .pot file.

[Bug 309396] Re: Ubuntu UMPC boot menu is truncated

2009-03-05 Thread Emmet Hikory
** Description changed:

The menu entry on the Ubuntu UMPC live image from today is cut "Try
Ubuntu UMPC without any c" (change).

  IMPACT:
Distributed VFAT images made bootable in a hardy environment continue to
expose previously addressed syslinux issues in gfxboot, resulting in malformed
menus and reduced functionality. Most significantly, descriptions are
truncated and alternate install modes are unavailable.

  DEVELOPMENT SOLUTION:
Two patches were applied to gfxboot: the first to avoid a crash when both
gfxboot and com32 were in use. The second to force a gfxboot prompt if gfxboot
is configured.

  TEST CASE:
Construct a vfat installation image (This must be done with intrepid or
jaunty debian-cd)
Run syslinux on the vfat binary on a hardy system
Boot the result, and observe menu truncation

+ ALTERNATE TEST CASE:
+ Download a MID, UMPC, or Netbook Remix image from cdimage.ubuntu.com
+ In a hardy environment, run syslinux
+ Note that with the patched syslinux, gfxboot works, and with the current
syslinux, menus are truncated.
+
  REGRESSION POTENTIAL:
VFAT images made bootable in a hardy environment that rely on the bug to
not use gfxboot despite configuration may suddenly have an alternate menu
interface presented, which may not match user expectations.

The VFAT images currently distributed on cdimage.ubuntu.com
(intrepid, jaunty alphas) will no longer match the images that would be
constructed afresh in an environment including this bugfix. As none of
these images are expected to be reissued, users may be confused by
differences between self-constructed images and distributed official
  images.

2009-03-05 Thread cjae
Public bug reported:

Hi, Sorry if this is a duplicate but I searched my name and didn't see
it. Anyway, when I use nvidia 177 drivers via apt and setup SEPARATE x
screens, which nobody likes because there is no drag and drop between
screens, the tv out via s-video is only black. I used nvidia-settings to
make the xorg.conf file and also tried a saved copy from other ubuntu
distros well actually it works with any distro but 8.10. I can see my
mouse on the second screen but it is an X and the is nothing else you
can do (click or drag panels or anything)

It is weird because twinview works quite well, wait no it pops windows
open on the wrong screens. Eg. If I open an app on my tv it will appear
on the monitor.

[Bug 217504] Re: acpi_fakekey stopped working for certain keycodes

2009-03-05 Thread Thomas Hood
In Jaunty (4 March 2009), xev can now see the ThinkVantage keypress on
my ThinkPad X61 and the ThinkVantage key can be assigned as a keyboard
shortcut in GNOME.

However, the Zoom key (i.e., Fn-Space) is still not seen by xev.

acpi_listen can see both ThinkVantage and Zoom:

xev sees the ThinkVantage key this way:

[Bug 275492] Re: monsterz.py crashed with error in blit()

2009-03-05 Thread jharrell
@Arnaud

Ok I ran through the manual install using the deb file found here
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/22300806/monsterz_0.7.1-2ubuntu1_i386.deb
- still get the same lock error.

and here is what fixed it:

First I removed the monsterz that was installed from the repo.
Then ran the gnome deb installer and everything is back to normal.

BEST game ever... maybe I'll take up python to add to it... Thanks.

[Bug 328980] Re: xkbcomp errors should be displayed

2009-03-05 Thread Martin von Gagern
> could you describe a way to trigger the error?

I hit this in bug #327963. So a way to reproduce is this:
1. set keyboard layout to "Germany Macintosh, no dead keys"
2. set keyboard model to "MacBook / MacBook Pro (Intl)"

This might only work until someone fixes #327963, though. After that,
you might have to revert their change or introduce some artificial
problem with the xkeyboard-config data. Or use some unfixed aspect of
bug #67188.

> do you get that at the session start or when using the capplet?

Both. When using gnome-keyboard-properties it happens, and when leaving
the broken settings, it happens again at session start.

[Bug 338596] [NEW] Bad number of steps in screen brightness on recent Sony Vaio notebooks, Intel GMA adapter

2009-03-05 Thread Michael Lustfield
Public bug reported:

This bug originates from bug 173652. (Unable to adjust screen brightness
on recent Sony Vaio notebooks, Intel GMA adapter).

The screen brightness now works, but runs through very poor steps.

Comments from the other bug may explain this best:

"To be honest, with the patch I'm using in stable, I get 20 steps. I
find this just a slight tad to many. mostly because I feel it should
have a little better flow. 19 to 20 goes from I'd like this a little
darker to completely black. Perhaps 15 would be a good number?

I'll have to grab an a4 cd and check it out. For me I know it'll be a
matter of how well it works as opposed to working or not."

"On Jaunty with latest updates I now get 9 steps for the backlight with the
Fn key combination.
When I installed (Alpha 3) there were only 5 steps, so some update changed
it.
9 steps (while an odd number) is working a lot better now, and much more
usable because the difference between the steps is not so drastic.
I think its working very well now."

It sounds like the 10 to 15 steps is good, my personal vote is for 15.
My other issue with what's left is that the last few steps in the
process go from slightly dark to completely dark.

I don't have the test environment at my disposal at this point but I
will get further information attached asap.

[Bug 309396] Re: Ubuntu UMPC boot menu is truncated

2009-03-05 Thread Emmet Hikory
** Description changed:

- Hi,
-
The menu entry on the Ubuntu UMPC live image from today is cut "Try
Ubuntu UMPC without any c" (change).

- Bye
+ IMPACT:
+ Distributed VFAT images made bootable in a hardy environment continue to
expose previously addressed syslinux issues in gfxboot, resulting in malformed
menus and reduced functionality. Most significantly, descriptions are
truncated and alternate install modes are unavailable.
+
+ DEVELOPMENT SOLUTION:
+ Two patches were applied to gfxboot: the first to avoid a crash when both
gfxboot and com32 were in use. The second to force a gfxboot prompt if gfxboot
is configured.
+
+ TEST CASE:
+ Construct a vfat installation image (This must be done with intrepid or
jaunty debian-cd)
+ Run syslinux on the vfat binary on a hardy system
+ Boot the result, and observe menu truncation
+
+ REGRESSION POTENTIAL:
+ VFAT images made bootable in a hardy environment that rely on the bug to
not use gfxboot despite configuration may suddenly have an alternate menu
interface presented, which may not match user expectations.
+
+ The VFAT images currently distributed on cdimage.ubuntu.com
+ (intrepid, jaunty alphas) will no longer match the images that would be
+ constructed afresh in an environment including this bugfix. As none of
+ these images are expected to be reissued, users may be confused by
+ differences between self-constructed images and distributed official
+ images.

Yes that is true, but with such a huge regression, I thought it would be
bad for all users, that sometimes select something with konsole by
doubleclicking on it. But as you say all those users will have to wait 1

Personally I use this feature about 200 times a day, and when it is not

frustrating.

I'm using an HP Mini and have this bug with all of the symptoms listed

I am desperate for a fix for this.

A BIOS fix for a Dell Mini isn't going to help me and when I go into the
Power Management Preferences pane, there is no battery tab. In fact,
there is no mention whatsoever of anything battery related so I do not
have the options for "Reduce backlight brightness" and "Dim display when
idle".

Is there another workaround or any possibility of an imminent fix?

Without it, I may be force to run windows Oh God, I need a
shower after just TYPING those words!!

Please help!

[Bug 217868] Re: rdesktop freezes shortly after successful connection

2009-03-05 Thread Bassu Khan
Hi Fran Taylor,

Thanks for the info but I can see this is not the case here! I already
have audited all of the networks for any such packet issues. The problem
dramatically appears when I rdc into ALL of the Windows machines in all
networks. I RDC into four different data centers from my three different
internal networks and the rdesktop 'timeouts' only occur when using
'rdesktop' from Linux. How come this is happening only in 'rdesktop' in
all 6 totally different networks on all machines so this is definitely
not the case ;)

One of the major issue which cracks me up, is the timeout as slowness is
acceptable as far as I'm able to work on remote machines! Rdesktop locks
up, freezes, crashes or simply timeouts when left inactive or minimized
for some time and I duplicated this a lot more on Hardy and Interpid.

[Bug 337648] Re: doesn't detect CRT monitor

2009-03-05 Thread bsh
unfortunatelly, i have deleted the old xorg logs, and the current log is clean,
sinc i'm now using vesa driver to make the computer work at all, and therefore
xorg.conf is basically a copy of the corg.conf.failsafe, uninteresting i think.
i'll revert the xorg.conf to the default and do a reboot when i can, and post
the log.

[Bug 232308] Re: corner of letter J gets stuck behind after moving window and changing position of J

2009-03-05 Thread John Kuang
It occurs before and after transferring my profiles.

In text mode, this doesn't happen. Only happens in HTML mode with
"variable width" or serif.

You've got it slightly wrong. This is how you reproduce it.

- compose msg in HTML with font set to "variable width", and it should be the
same font as "serif".
- begin any line by typing J (can be capital or small letters...both have the
problem))
- click on the MOVE bar (you don't even have to move it), or RESIZE works too
- at this stage, the extra tip on J will appear!
- now, you can put a space or enter right before the J
- the tip that appeared is stuck there!

Thanks for trying to reproduce.

[Bug 291271] Re: Jockey Not Detecting Broadcom Wireless Card, When It Should & Provide Use of B43 or STA Driver

2009-03-05 Thread CrYpTiC_MauleR
Ok weird thing, my girlfriend's laptop and mine are IDENTICAL in
hardware, except she uses Hardy and I use Jaunty. When I run the Jaunty
LiveCD on her laptop it detects the broadcom card and gives option to
install drivers. When I run the Jaunty LiveCD on my laptop it does not
detect it. How can this be when both laptops are identical models and
same in every way? I ran lspci when running off Jaunty installation and
it shows the card being listed, but still Jockey does not give me option
to install drivers.

I just freshly installed Xubuntu Intrepid 8.10 and jockey does not
properly detect my wireless card. It detects my Nvidia card so it is
functioning. Before this fresh install I was testing out Intrepid and my
wireless card was being detected. Hardware Drivers was giving me the
option to choose B43 or STA drivers. This is no longer the case. Even
after enabling all repos, and doing all updates it still does not work.
Need anymore info from me please post. Thanks!

[Bug 66399] Re: primary selection replace

2009-03-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi David,

Thanks for the idea on changing how copying works. This is not
something we can implement in Ubuntu (which probably has become obvious
due to the age of this bug report), and it needs to go upstream for
consideration and/or implementation. This upstreaming is best done by
you, so you can champion the idea and convince upstream it is worth
doing.

[Bug 247364] Re: Some emails are not displayed but are saved in the mailbox file

2009-03-05 Thread robanon

I've added an IMAP account to check the same Exchange account for emails to
verify if it is an evolution-exchange specific problem.

The thing is the problem is very intermittent, I'd guess its around 1 in
a hundred emails don't display on time, and if the email shows up a few
hours or even a day late you might not realize there had been a problem.

I'm also not sure if emails occasionally don't show up at all, because
its difficult to know about emails you didn't receive.

But if the problem is exchange specific, does that rule out trying to
fix it? Or does it make the the problem less urgent?

The main advantage of Evolution to me (and I guess many others) is that
it can integrate with Exchange servers, as far as I know its the only
Open Source MUA that works with Exchange's calendaring etc, but it
requires the evolution-exchange plugin to work.

If I had an alternative MUA I'd move to it because of this problem, but
need Evolution for the calendar support.

Hopefully we'll get to the bottom of it soon, I'll let you know how I
get on.

[Bug 288668] Re: [Intrepid Ubuntu i386 Live CD Final - smoke testing] Second graphic card (Nvidia 7900GS) not detected

2009-03-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi loic,

Well, we already have bug 316514 open for the general issue that multi-
card setups don't work. So in essence the primary issue described in
the description is a dupe of that.

However, you've identified a viable flaw in that the system ought to
still work, even if it is ignoring the second card. So we can keep this
bug to focus on the secondary issue you've found, that Visual Effects is
triggering a download of the proprietary driver for a secondary card
that is not being used by X. Does that sound like an acceptable course
of action? The title and description should be revised to focus on that
problem, and this bug should be reassigned to... hmm... jockey I guess?

[Bug 180601] Re: Incomplete monitor specification data for Sony CPD-E200 due to KVM switch interfering with EDID data collection

2009-03-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
FactTech,

Well, the fact that KVM's sometimes squelch EDID has been a well known
issue for a long long time. As you mentioned, there is no known
solution that can be applied automatically. So for this particular
issue I believe we're at a dead end.

However, for this use case, others have proposed that a solution would
be to provide a manual configuration GUI such as we used to in Gutsy
(displayconfig-gtk, which unfortunately became obsolete once X moved to
xrandr). Do you agree that this would be an acceptable resolution for
this particular problem? If so, then I'd suggest we dupe this bug to
that master bug, bug #240916. Let me know if you agree; if not, explain
what other resolution you'd like to see.

I can reproduce it on Jaunty also. Here is a video. After scrolling very
fast up and down cursor stops blinking and I couldn't type any more.

[Bug 272706] Re: Mouse loose acceleration settings when using another X Window

2009-03-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

When using another X window (like Xnest or launching gdmthemetester), the new
Window will not use your mouse gnome settings (which is normal) but when you
close it, your mouse acceleration is not brought back.
You'll have to run gnome-mouse-properties and click on acceleration to bring
it back.

  Test case:
In gnome set acceleration to (very) slow so you could see a difference.
  Open an Xnest :1 window.
Your mouse will have the «normal» acceleration.
Close your Xnest window and the mouse will still have the «normal» settings.

[Bug 280894] Re: Modeline in xorg.conf ignored

2009-03-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

There seems to be an error in X.org version 1.3.0 on my Ubuntu 7.10
  system.

I have an approx 20 pixels black border at the left of my screen when I
boot up in Linux on my dual boot system. In Windows the screen is
  aligned correctly.

I have tried the xvidtune tool. It initially reports:
  "1024x768" 65.00 1024 1048 1184 1344 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync
and after pressing 'Left' a couple of times and getting the window properly
shifted left, it reports:
  "1024x768" 65.00 1024 1068 1204 1344 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync

I updated my /etc/X11/xorg.conf to contain:
  ...
  Section "Device"
  Identifier "NVIDIA Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400]"
  Driver "nv"
  BusID "PCI:1:0:0"

[Bug 281871] Re: GDM 2.20 does not use hal keyboard config

2009-03-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gdm

  Hi,

In GDM, the keyboard layout is still PC 105 US, while i'm on a macbook
with french keyboard. All is fine in GNOME, without touching
  configuration through keyboard capplet.

I guess this is due to the fact that Xorg don't use xorg.conf anymore.
GDM 2.24 should not have this problem, but i can't reach to get it
working from source. Would be nice to have GDM 2.24 alternative. How to
get right keymap in GDM ?

  Regards,
  Étienne.

[Bug 295912] Re: mouse/keyboard events getting delayed in games

2009-03-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

At least in the game Nexuiz, mouse and keyboard input sometimes gets
  "queued up".

As in: I click around wildly in the menu (this seems to "invite" the bug
fast). After that, I can click options, and they won't activate until I
move the mouse a bit. Or, I move the mouse right, stop for some seconds,
then move it DOWN - and it still goes RIGHT a little.

I debugged this a bit in the Nexuiz source and came to the conclusion
that the event loop does not even SEE these events, so this probably
can't be a bug in Nexuiz:

in vid_glx.c, the function HandleEvents() is just a simple loop of the
  form:

  while (XPending(vidx11_display))
  {
  XNextEvent(vidx11_display, &event);
  ...
  }

Inside this loop, there is no "return" or "goto", so this must handle
all events that are queued up. Also, I get the very same problem when
using the SDL build of Nexuiz, which uses a completely different event
loop, namely a while(SDL_PollEvent(&event)) loop, with which there
  should be nothing wrong.

I managed to work around this problem by switching away from evdev to
mouse, by adding these lines to xorg.conf:

  Section "ServerFlags"
  Option "AutoAddDevices" "False"
  EndSection

  Section "InputDevice"
  Identifier "mouse"
  Driver "mouse"
  Option "CorePointer" "True"

  Option "Emulate3Buttons" "False"
  EndSection

  Section "InputDevice"
  Identifier "kbd"
  Driver "keyboard"
  Option "CoreKeyboard" "True"

  Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
  Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
  Option "XkbLayout" "de"
  Option "XkbVariant" "nodeadkeys"
  EndSection

This shows that the problem must be evdev related.

As I have this report open now, I'll submit it, then remove that
workaround from my xorg.conf and try to reproduce it with DGA disabled.

[Bug 292260] Re: Ctrl+Shift and other layout switching combinations stop working as modifiers

2009-03-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

The bug is live in intrepid, 8.10.

It is possible to set combination like "Ctrl+Shift" the keyboard layout
switcher privatizes it as the shortcut for switching layouts, and disallows
all
other programs to use it as modifier.

  Steps to reproduce:
  0. Login to GNOME (the steps below are for 2.24, but should be similar for
  other versions).
  1. Open "Keyboard preferences" in Keyboard layout indicator applet.
  2. Go to Layouts.
  3. Add some keyboard layouts.
  4. Click "Other Options".
  5. Under "Layout switching", check "Ctrl+Shift" change layout.
  6. Open Firefox.
  7. Open several tabs with Ctrl+T.
  8. Switch forward through them with multiple "Ctrl+Tab". Notice that
everything
  is ok.
  9. Try to switch backward through them with multiple "Ctrl+Shift+Tab"...

  Actual results:
  Exactly at moment when you press down Ctrl and Shift, keyboard layout changes;
after you press Tab, without letting Ctrl and Shift off, Firefox switches one
tab forward instead of one tab backward.

  Expected results:
Firefox should go one tab back.
  Layout should not change.

Overall, the layout should change not at the time when you press down Ctrl and
Shift, but only at the time when you let go one of them, and only if you
didn't
use this combination as modifier for another key.

  Does this happen every time?
  Yes.

  Other information:
In windows, everything is working exactly as desired - layouts are changed
only
at the time when you let go the combination.

Corresponding bug against X.Org is unsolved since 2004:
  http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=865

This is one of the main issues that prevent Ubuntu to be used
  internationally.
