[WISPA] need service in LA
Anyone have the ability to provide service in Thibodaux, LA and/or Denham Springs, LA? [WISPA] MotoWi4
Hi, I read Motorola's recent announcement of the MotoWi4 platform for 802.16e with interest. I found it even MORE interesting that they've backdated this announcement - which came out the other day - to July 25. If intentional, this move would seem to supercede their previous announcement to build 802.16d updates for the Canopy Advantage platform. That's alright and all, but it does seem a little tricky to rewrite history (Motorola recently announced a major joint technology development agreement with Sprint for wireless broadband WiMAX 802.16e technology testing and equipment trials. - no, they announced trials for 802.16*d*). Mostly, I'd just like to know where they're going, and if the Canopy Advantage will really be all that - or if it will fall flat on its face as the redheaded stepchild of Motorola, as someone suggested at WiNOG, in deference to MotoWi4. Anybody got a clue?-- Dylan OliverPrimaverity, LLC -- WISPA Wireless List: wireless@wispa.org Subscribe/Unsubscribe: http://lists.wispa.org/mailman/listinfo/wireless Archives: http://lists.wispa.org/pipermail/wireless/
Re: [WISPA] MotoWi4
As I understand it, the advantage platform was supposed to be software upgradeable to 802.16d. However, since that time Motorola has decided that 802.16d is a waste of time and is focusing on building pre802.16e products. I don't think advantage will be upgradeable to 802.16e, but I haven't heard one way or the other. -Matt Dylan Oliver wrote: Hi, I read Motorola's recent announcement of the MotoWi4 platform for 802.16e with interest. I can also send some voip adapters if there is an asterisk system and someone to program them. I have some Linksys 4 port router with 2 voip ports. Oh yeah, I do have a few pap-na's available as well. They are the Linksys stand alaone voip adaters that plug into a port on the router. I have a few of those as well if this would help. Hello Rick, Is this: a. In lieu of Part15 efforts b. Part of Part15 efforts Is the data in the Part-15 database being shared so these requests can be part of getting supplies? What about the equipment shipped out by Intel and Cisco? Is that only for official RC efforts? RE: [WISPA] Call for 802.11 Bridges, Routers, VoIP and more.
Please keep a count and inventory of all items that you send. If you want to list it on the Part-15 website for documentation that if fine. Please send me a list as well. WISPA has people in the field now and they need equipment NOW! The bureaucracy that Part-15 is having to put up with is unbearable for most of us to deal with. It is no fault of Michael's as he is doing his best, but we are going to become doers instead of sitting back. I know a lot of refugees will appreciate our efforts. It is definitely important to document what and where you send the radios. I am starting a spreadsheet now. Michael has asked me to submit all of the gear that WISPA can donate. He doesn't feel that we are helping much. So lets show just what we can do. In my opinion, WISPA members have been out there doing things already. Just ask Mac and JohnnyO. There is a job to do and people who want to do it. Lets make the job as simple as possible. Little information has been released so far about Intel and Cisco equipment being shipped out and if so, to whom. Matt Larsen is heading down to Mac's on Wednesday, Tim Wolfe is heading out in the morning to Biloxi and there are at least 20 others leaving soon as well. It would be a shame if they don't have much gear to deploy. If nothing else, they can help get things organized and start developing a field plan, visiting shelters and so forth. But that doesn't stop anyone who wants to head down and jump in where they can and then when Part-15 gets the nod to do what it is they want Part-15 to do, they can help Part-15. Seems there are people on the relief list who want to work now. Also I'm wondering if wispa can't be of help by setting up a fund to help Mac and the other small wisps who are setting up communications at shelters to actually hire some of the displaced residents and actually pay them money while they work, so they can get housing and back to work and on their own feet again. Is this too far out there. Makes the best business sense to get a recovery going, hire the displaced. Re: [WISPA] Call for 802.11 Bridges, Routers, VoIP and more.
I have some Cisco routers that I can LOAN to this effort (they are my backups and I'll need them back). I may be able to spare a pc without display too. Let me know if this'll help. We are getting a lot of requests from down south for more equipment. Mac Dearman, JohnnyO, Tim Wolfe, Joe Miller and Joe Laura are all working diligently to get more shelters online as quickly as possible. If anyone has any equipment they can donate ASAP. Please get with me. There are nearly 20 volunteers heading down there from all over the country in the next few days. Some are in route now. We need backhaul equipment, AP's and client radios. Routers and VoIP equipment is also needed. Feel free to call my cell. This call for equipment includes resellers and manufacturers. Please call me today! RE: [WISPA] need WISPA to step up
I retract my previous statement, due to several things on the P15 side of the fence that appear to be ugly. I don't believe P15 is doing this without self promotion in mind. This is an effort that needs to be thankless, and in THAT fact, it will come out that a wireless organization stepped up to the plate, and because of their efforts, a whole lot of people were more comfortable. Imagine, after the city's cleaned up, and we got to collectively KEEP the antenna locations we borrowed to put the network in place, there'd be interviews on tv, etc that asked WISPA officials for their comments on the overall process, and the tag line could be simply Call WISPA today to find out how they can get a local WISP to help you! That said, I'm helping Mac and Johnny in their efforts, directly, for the same reason I never give money to the salvation army or the red cross. I want to know where my money / donations are going and what they're being used for. I think a whole lot of people here ought to think real hard about this new-found relationship with P15 that wouldn't exist without tragedy as the underlying cement. -Original Message- From: Rick Smith Sent: Friday, September 02, 2005 8:28 AM To: 'WISPA General List' Subject: RE: [WISPA] need WISPA to step up I'm wondering if WISPA has missed the boat for the relief effort. Shouldn't wispa stand behind and work with Part-15 on this one? This isn't a race to look best, but an effort to put WISPs on the map as reliable and trustworthy! http://www.part-15.org/emergencyrelief/equipment.html -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Rudolph Worrell Sent: Friday, September 02, 2005 5:48 AM To: WISPA General List Subject: Re: [WISPA] need WISPA to step up I am not sure where you will be getting uplink service to get out to the world from New Orleans but here is a link to someone who may be able to help with that. http://www.livejournal.com/users/interdictor/ Quoting Matt Liotta [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I think at this point there is the support needed to provide help for the hurricane, but we need some organization. It seems to me this should be a WISPA lead effort. I think someone from the board should lead the effort or have the board designate a volunteer to lead the effort. We are ready to provide support ourselves. We can offer Tropos equipment for instant Wi-Fi meshes as well as VoIP termination of phone calls. -Matt -- WISPA Wireless List: wireless@wispa.org Subscribe/Unsubscribe: http://lists.wispa.org/mailman/listinfo/wireless Archives: http://lists.wispa.org/pipermail/wireless/ - This mail sent through IMP: http://horde.org/imp/ -- WISPA Wireless List: wireless@wispa.org Subscribe/Unsubscribe: http://lists.wispa.org/mailman/listinfo/wireless Archives: http://lists.wispa.org/pipermail/wireless/ -- No virus found in this incoming message.
