Hello all,
I have recently set up an AMANDA server on a SUN Ultra5 (solaris8) and have
been using SAMBA to backup
Windows clients. In order to assure myself that I am, in fact, getting real
data on tape, I am trying to restore
a partition. I found that I can use amrecover to pull down the la
I have recently set up Amanda on a system here and am generally pleased
with how it works, although the ideal setup I have in mind doesn't seem
to be immediately obvious from the documentation.
I have a 160G holding disk to which I spool several 13G partitions. The

Hello,
I recently had to recover an entire disk from backup. Files were
restored from one tape as well as a dump on the holding disk. Once
complete, all directory ownership and permissions were set to root and
755. All files however were set appropriately. I'm using amanda2.4.2

Yep, I've done it when eg. I was snowed in for a week and couldn't get
in to change the tape. It's a good argument for a large holding disk,
and this is a feature that I haven't found in other, rather expensive,
backup packages.
You might want to consider using Big Brother (www.bb4.com) with Amanda to
get alerts when there are backup problems.

The way we handle it here is to have several people who know how to do the
tape change, and make sure one of them comes in and does it. So far, we
haven't all been out of town on the same day.

Hello to all,
probaly i didn't explained mysefl very well so here i
go again :) (please correct me if i'm wrong):
The script is used to ask someone else on the
datacenter to change the tape if there were no errors;
I read in the amcheck man page the following (related
to the -m option):

It just dawned on me that I won't be in the office next Monday or
Tuesday. I have a backup cronned for M-F at 1800. My first idea of what
to do is just to leave the system alone, let it backup to disk Monday
and Tuesday, and first thing Wednesday, amflush the backup to tape.
Is this okay to do? I
Hello people,
This list has been a very good source of information
on setting up amanda and i will like to contribute; I
made a little Perl script that sents an email to the
responsible of changing tapes on a tape unit for the
next backup.
The script is smart (well kind of :) ), only sents the
