I found the reason for the strange behaviour of the system. After
upgrading, the file "/home//.config/dconf/user" was chowned to
root. So all write accesses failed.
Looks like there is some bug in the upgrading process.

Confirmed bug on Lenovo E550.
Prominently appears when plugging in an external Samsung S23C350 screen before
boot/power on however plugging it in once logged it. Thus far the bug has only
once occurred when the external screen is not plugged in.

I experienced the same issue as Marcin described after updating from
14.10 on my Thinkpad T420.
In order to solve it I had to manually remove all nvidia-* packages and
install nvidia-346. Not a big deal for anyone somehow comfortable with a
shell but probably a show stopper for some other users.
