A couple years ago I made one out of an Arduino Uno that used any of the
smaller Russian nixies like IN-2, IN-17, or IN-12 JUST for speedometer. It
plugged into the cigar lighter as a stand-along box. It was just for fun.

these. I searched and it went right to Grahame's wonderful trigger tube
clock. So this is a 4 electrode trigger tube. Do tell! That box image is

software developer in the 1970's and worked on Burroughs systems for years.

Am I the only one who thinks the slot machine effect is much nicer to see
than this alternative? However, I am on-board if this actually helps
longevity.
The slot machine effect is usually what gets non-nixie folks excited about
the display. It's the "blinky-lights gets the attention" effect.
This is absolutely glorious! I love it.
It would be swell to create a modernized BoM and see if a modern simulated
kit could be assembled for broader use by us nixonians here.
