Hi All,
Thanks to a ride from David Burg, Jared and Michelle Cole and I spent a great
3.5 hours in Breezy Point and environs this afternoon. Our plan was to explore
the beach to the Breezy Point jetty and then bird along the dune trail. Little
did we know that scanning a ~1K stretch of ocean
Brooklyn continues to turn up some good winter birds. Some highlights from this
morning:
Veteran's Memorial Pier (Bay Ridge Avenue at Shore Road)
A drake Eurasian Wigeon close to the rocks by the wastewater treatment plant.

This afternoon I took a ride to Dune Road / Shinnecock Inlet.
The inlet held a nice raft which consisted of various scoter species and
Common Eiders as well as some fringe red-breasted mergansers. The
highlight was an immature male King Eider that I photographed
(accidentally).

not park your vehicle in the middle of the road and get out to look at the

Saw the juvenile Red-headed WP continuing in Green-Wood late this afternoon.
The bird is starting to show a little red on the head. I have some pictures on

I led a morning walk @ Wave Hill today for NYC Audubon. It was a pretty good
day for raptors: an adult Bald Eagle soaring repeatedly over the grounds & the
Hudson; an adult Peregrine Falcon soaring & stooping; a Merlin (which briefly
strafed the Peregrine); and an immature Red-tailed Hawk.

I stopped by the buffalo farm on Reeves Ave in Riverhead (Suffolk Co) about
2:30pm today. Ken Feustel had reported a Yellow-headed Blackbird here on
the seventh, and I did see one in the large flock of cowbirds, etc. I do
not have a photograph, but I got an excellent look at this bird - it was

Spent about an hour checking the Coxsackie Grasslands and vicinity on Sunday
afternoon 1/12.
Most notable for what was NOT seen: only one harrier spotted; ZERO gulls
at the Cox. boat launch; no mergansers on the river; no eagles; no flocks
of larks or buntings along River Rd; no Snowy
REDHEAD (single drake Moravian Cemetery Pond, uncommon for Staten Island)
White-winged Scoter (Wolfe's Pond close to shore)

Checked some of the NorthWest Harbor shore points in the evening but didn't
come up with anything terribly noteworthy (poor visibility hampered
sea-watching).

Saw 1 of 3 eagles With Brant and Ming.

There's a Greater White-fronted Goose in the field 7 parking lot right now.
Some vehicle traffic but it doesn't seem to be greatly affecting the flock.

Glaucous Gull continues at Coney Island creek. Bobbi Manian, Chris Las and
myself observed the bird chillin' with a mixed flick of gulls on little beach
just west of kaiser park concrete pier. Bird lifted off and returned to same

The Black Vulture first found last weekend is perched up in a tree at the north
end of Church Lane near Riverhead with ten or so TVs.
At nearby Iron Pier Beach a continuing ad Iceland Gull was easy to find along
the beach. Another ad Iceland and a first winter Lesser Black back were on the
ice
The *Cackling Goose* reported yesterday by Gary Strauss continued this
morning on the Centerport Mill Pond as viewed from the DEC property on
Centershore Road. Note that the bird was previously seen on Tung Ting
Pond, the adjacent pond that can be viewed from the Chalet Motor Inn

On ice edge at croton point bay (off beach) at 820 a.m. there are 27 bald
eagles sitting in the ice / water edge
