I'm not sure how this error condition would ever be hit, since I see
that policykit ships the /var/run/PolicyKit directory within the
package.
But that in itself is a bug, so I'm sponsoring this fix with the one
added change to drop /var/run/PolicyKit from the package. Amended
changelog:

I have the same problem. Here are the logs I was able to catch (lspci won't run
when the system is started)
The results are not exactly the same every time I boot, sometimes I won't even
get to a root prompt.
Booting in 2.6.24 works fine with no errors. Also note that I get no
ext3 errors in 2.6

Yup, just noticed this myself after turning on shift switcher. Having
just switched from Windows I was struggling to work out what was going
on. Good to hear that the regular Ubuntu application switcher works ok,

getting set (see the lshal output). It should be set to {'input',

I already solved the problem. I completely removed the slapd package,
then I searched for slapd on the data system and removed every slapd
file, (there were config data at least, which had to be removed).
Now I could reinstall and everything works!

Upon my last comment, I was actually able to get the driver working
again by completely removing (including files from the apt cache) and
using Hardware Drivers in the Administration menu to reinstall it. The
instructions are as follows:
1. Open Synaptic in the System -> Administration menu.

I cannot confirm this issue with an up-to-date installation of ubuntu intrepid.
Can you please update your system and check weather there is still no such
button. Also: this might be related to bug 250506.

I think this bug is not about static IP (i.e. not dhcp) in network manager
but about static(manual, non-roaming) network configuration, this means
-without- network manager.
