one more time - DEMF trips from outside the U.S.
A few weeks back, I posted a message saying I was interested in talking to some folks coming to Detroit for the festival. I received a number of great responses, but need a few more. So if you're heading to the DEMF and you live outside the U.S., I'd still like to hear from you. This is for a story that will run in a Detroit-area publication. Basically, I'm interested in finding out why you're coming, how far in advance you had to make your plans, if it's going to be costly to you, what you expect, if you've ever been to the U.S. and/or Detroit, if you're coming by yourself or with a group, and so on. Please email me back privately. Thank you! Tim Pratt

A brief review of the Lil' Louis party in Eastern mkt last night... *PROS: -Theo's set is there ever a disapointment from this dj? -free beer you can never argue with that ;-) -lots of people showing up (including Baby Ford et al...) NOW i'm jealous. not fair. I heard he almost didn't play at all because he didn't like the speaker setup and demanded they be moved around totally understandable. I truely don't think its fair to a dj to put him on a horrible system. the crowd naturally thinks the crappy sound is the dj's fault (at the very least it kills all the energy in their set). Not that i'm a supahstar pa by ANY means, but there are people i'll never play for again because they bring in shitty systems. hmm. What do you guys think? is it ok for a performer to decide to NOT play due to a low quality soundsystem? is this too arrogant? _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
RE: [313] Orlando Voorn revisited
I heard him a few weeks ago. He playted a nice set. The only 'problem' with Orlando is that he doesn't give a f uck about what the audience want. He just does he thing and if you don't like it, bad luck. Fortunatly i do like his sets. Orlando used to be DMC champion. In the earlt ninties i he played 35 records in 30 minutes :) [EMAIL PROTECTED] I saw Orlando a few years back at House of God alongside Surgeon. I much preferred what he was doing. The roof went off when he dropped the 2 copies of Flash; the rest of the night's music was in a similar vein. I also remember thinking what a terrific idea it was when I saw Voorn leaving, there was Surgeon trundling behind struggling with his record box, whilst Voorn just strolled along with his on a sort of personal airport trolley. Where can I get one?

[313] Neil Landstrumm, Christian Vogel etc...
I love old Landstrumm from the Peacefrog days. Played some tonight. Since then a lot of it has been close but no cigar for me. His contribution to one of the New Electronica comps was quite nice and a good change of pace though. The Blue Arsed Fly stuff was nice too. I don't think Russ Gabrielle's In The Bag remix has ever strayed too far from my crate (not that that really counts). Definitely with you here... In The Bag is superb. The previous Blue Arsed Fly release, it might have been on Sativae?, I had to get rid of because of the disgusting label art :) I also prefer his earlier stuff on Peacefrog, the Index Man EP being essential - none of this shows up so often these days, either. I had the good fortune to catch Landstrumm live at Sativae many years ago (where Tarrida was resident DJ, a job to which he is better suited IMO) where he climbed down onto the stage from the lighting rig. He used to work in a video shop out Tollcross way, too. What a time for techno in Edinburgh that was: Sativae every other week with Pure being good in between! [313] Derrick May @ Ocean, Hackney - sorry.
I really hope nobody decided to go to this after my info on Friday. It was embarrassingly awful. Groove La Chord, the fade up the chord, change the drum programming pattern - my girlfriend actually fell asleep during this) and Derrick May, after initially promising much, petered out to fairly dull harder stuff. When you open a RealAudio file a .ram file gets copied onto your HD, usually in your temporary internet files if youre on a pc. locate that file and open it in a text editor. there you should find the a link to the downloadable .rm file on the server. it doesn't always work but there's no harm in trying! RE: [313] TWILO!!!
Grr, just subscribed to the NY Times to bring you this: From today's NY Times City Closes Dance Club Over Problems With Permits By ERIC LIPTON wilo, a popular Chelsea nightclub, was shut down early yesterday, at least temporarily, after the police and building inspectors raided the club and evicted hundreds of patrons, saying that several of the club's building permits were missing or invalid. The move comes as the Giuliani administration intensifies its long- running battle against a handful of Manhattan dance clubs that city officials say are havens of drug use and occasional violence. No one at Twilo was arrested in yesterday's raid, police officials said. Instead, officials shut the club, at 530 West 27th Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues, after determining that its certificate of occupancy and place of assembly permits had not been properly issued or maintained. Officials also said that the club's fire protection plan was not up to date and that it had not gotten required approvals for first-floor renovations. A Department of Buildings spokesman said the six-year-old club, known for its electronic music and dancing that lasts until well after dawn, would not be allowed to reopen until the violations were resolved. They are shut down until further notice, indefinitely, said the spokesman, Paul Wein, adding that a June 21 court date had been set. Peter R. Sullivan, a lawyer for the club, said the violations were technical and called the club's closing unjustified. Absolute guaranteed it will be reopened, he said. The enforcement tactic used yesterday reflected a strategy by the city to no longer issue or renew permits to Twilo and other troubled clubs, unless ordered to do so by the court. That means that if a permit expires or needs to be amended, even for a relatively minor inconsistency, the city may refuse to do so and then shut the club down, Deputy Mayor Rudy Washington said. For example, part of the justification for closing Twilo yesterday, officials said, was that its basement assembly permit was invalid, at least in part, because it was issued to Sound Factory, a club that used to operate at that location. Mr. Washington was not ready to declare a lasting victory against Twilo, saying that the city's action could be overturned in court. It is now their move, Mr. Washington said, referring to the club management. This is not over by no stretch of the imagination. The Giuliani administration has been trying to close Twilo since at least November 1998, when the city, citing the drug overdose of a patron, filed a lawsuit declaring the club a public nuisance. City officials contend that clubs like Twilo and the Tunnel, another West 27th Street establishment, do not do enough to prevent the use and sale of drugs like ecstasy and GHB, or gamma hydroxybutyrate. But the clubs have just as vehemently responded that they are doing their part, hiring private security officers, including some who work undercover, to try to prevent drug use and violence. Mr. Sullivan said the fact that the state courts have allowed Twilo to stay open despite the lawsuit was proof that the club was well managed and dedicated to preventing drug sales. City officials, meanwhile, said that the evidence of the severity of the drug problem at Twilo is on display when the club is open: management hires a private ambulance to wait outside, ready to take patrons who have overdosed to hospital emergency rooms. The Giuliani administration's dance club enforcement effort was stepped up after April 9, when Terrence Davis, a 16-year-old who had been ejected from the Tunnel, was stabbed to death about two blocks from that club. A fire broke out at Twilo on a weekend night about a month ago, but the club was reopened the same night. Mr. Sullivan said the city's efforts were misguided. It is very sad that the city continues to hide the absence of a policy concerning drug abuse by the dancing public by demonizing Twilo, he said. Twilo regulars, some of whom learned of the news yesterday on the club's Internet site, seemed to agree with Mr. Sullivan. Almost all clubs have fire code violations, one patron wrote on the site's message board. The patron called the code violations an excuse to ensure that there are no bumps in the road in Giuliani's Disney-gentrification plan to have NYC become an ultraconservative suburb. [313] Re: Marshall Jefferson
Funny that you should mention this because Derrick May had some serious affection for Chicago and its sound before he embarked upon techno. Derrick frequently went to Chicago, both for records and clubbing. Who has heard of a club called The Bismarck? Apparently Lil' Louis played there a lot and Derrick was influenced by him (or so I have been told). It think it is hard to deny that Detroit techno learnt a lesson or two from the brotha's in the Windy City. The Bismarck was a theater on Randolph Street in the loop. It's not the Cadillac Palace, so Detroit got back. Lil' Louis' parties came later - the Detroit scene was first budding by then. The early stuff was at the warehouse, and the crazy stuff was at the Music Box (*not* to be confused with the theater of the same name). Back in the eighties it was *all* house - Detroit just had its own electro influenced take that was dubbed Techno House. A lot of us used to make the trip to Chicago on the weekends to check out the scene. Detroit and Chicago are close geographically and the exchange of ideas has always been healthy. Anyway Marshall and Lil' Louis were really different camps. Marshall and Larry Heard were more on the gay scene whereas Lil' Louis' parties were mostly str8. I heard Marshall spin an outdoor rave a few years back - it made me think of the old Metra picnics :-) mark - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

It was apparantly over some building permits? Who knows how long it will last. However, I've heard a rumor that none other than Martha Stewart will be buying the building in the near future, so she can make even more money. I don't know exactly what she plans on doing with the space, if it's indeed true. Maybe she will be creating an ecstasy/rave type club for horny housewives or something? Here's hoping your wish comes true for good, Alex ;) Oh, but then we won't get to hear Richie and John for $35. Damn it! Gotta luv NY... -J Twilo has been shut down. i am thinking about going to indianapolis on saturday to check out t. ramschmeire at that go to hell party. has anyone heard him spin at all? i like some of his production that i have managed to dig up on the shitkatapult website, but i haven't heard anything about his dj'ing, as far as does he stick primarily to the style that he produces or does he go a little bit harder when he djs and is he any good? if you could hit me back with some info, i would really appreciate it. :) thanks in advance. lauryn. -- ** nothing is an end because it can always be used as a basis for something new and different. -keith haring ** [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] ** -- - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

rampe d is a berlin based label, run by tresor dj's dash and dry. they have a website (www.rampe-d.de ) but for the moment only in german. i haven't paid that much attention on their releases, but if i remember right they release minimal techno in the vein of stewart walker etc. (who also did a remix on one of the releases) peter - Original Message - From: beautiful individual [EMAIL PROTECTED] : does anyone have any information on this label, the 5 Ws? : : thanks, : aidan : _ : Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. : : : - : To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] : For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] : - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi All, It has come to my attention that there has been a lot of misinformation about this event. Here are a few facts: 1. This even will take place on the main floor of the 2030 building. There will be 2 rooms. The main room will feature Dopplereffekt, Ultradyne, Adam X, and Heather Heart. Adam and Heather may also do some tag teaming. The smaller room will feature Tangible, Shadowpusher, DJ Luna, and Johanna Constantine. 2. NO MATTER WHAT YOU HAVE HEARD, THIS EVENT IS NOT TAKING PLACE IN ANYONE'S APARTMENT. PERIOD. While the building itself does have tenants on the upper floors, they are all being notified of the event and permission has been secured with the OWNERS of the building. The main floor 2 very large spaces connected by a hallway. 3. THE OWNERS HAVE ALLOWED US TO USE THE BUILDING. I FEEL THIS IS WORTH MENTIONING AGAIN. They are actually being paid for the use of the building. Imagine that! 4. If you have any questions about this event, you should contact me directly, or use the address below. Do not count on anyone else to provide accurate info regarding this event. They are talking out of their a**. You know who you are. I kind of care when I hear that people that would like to attend don't want to because they are hearing from a certain individual that this in being held in someone's apartment and that the owners are unaware of this event so it's going to get shut down. Re: [313] Real audio 2 CDR(was online mix track id)
If you can locate the URL that links you directly to the .ra file itself, you can type the location into your web browser and download it onto your hard drive (unless of course, it is cgi-based, as someone properly pointed out... you could try it anyway to see if it works though). Downloading the .ram file (metafile) does no good, as this file simply tells the web browser to launch your realmedia player and then points the player to the actual location of the .ra file itself. You can download the .ram file (right click as save as) and then open it with Notepad, that will tell you the location of the .ra file itself. As far as burning it to CD, you'd have to convert the .ra file to .wav format... either the old fashioned analog way (speaker output to cassette deck or mini-disc or whatever, then back to the computer's hard drive via line input) or use a program like ra2wav that will do it digitally for you.
