i think that what nick and diane are saying is right..to use the ford motor
company as basically a rich aunt and go to their festival and be glad
someone forked over some cash to foot the bill for the talent that we are
going to get to see and the production but yet not to be all showing
gratitude by buying their car. i think somehow though that maybe demf lost a
little bit of it's majick but not all...the music is free still and it's not
lost any of it's quality. until i see keoki headlining, i won't bitch too
much.

the only problematic thing that ford focus could possibly do at this point
is try and charge admission for the detroit electronic music festival
somewhere down the line. they credit the success of their automobile on
their ad campaign and i guess they think they can sell us more cars by
sponsoring a music festival to get their automobile more attention or
whatever. i don't think most of us are going to buy into it. their ad
campaign is brilliant and j walter thompson (the ad agency that did the
commercial in question) did a wonderful job of putting the commercial
together (too bad the rest of their commercials are pure shite...i pretty
much watch commercials for a living and i did a bit of research on them in
the company database...heh...basically, that commercial was a one-off for
them with the ford motor company who uses a few other ad agencies with a
much better track record, imho. that commercial was truly a fluke.) if you
read up on all the press releases done by the !
ford motor company, apparently the ad campaign did its job and sold a lot of
cars. the ford focus did win awards for car of the year in both america and
europe, too. i don't think it had anything to do with a bunch of technoheads
buying the car, though, because i think most of us are smarter than that. i
don't know a single soul personally who bought one of them and i sure know i
wouldn't. i just don't know how long the ford focus sponsorship will last if
their sales start dwindling.

i do believe that when people start getting too much recognition for their
creative efforts, a lot of the time, production quality starts disappearing.
out of that, comes stagnation and the inability to further create. too many
people are content to rest upon their laurels instead of being moved to
innovate and forge further into their art. but there are always going to be
the people who are in their basements or bedrooms who are unknown who create
a sound never heard before and it will replace the same ol' same ol' and
eventually, we will all come to the realization that if you don't think
forward and move forward, you get left behind, just the same way a lot of
producers of the past are who just don't feel the need to keep current with
their ideas. there is the recognition that their material was innovative and
inspiring, but i think most of us are intelligent enough to discern the
difference between being good NOW and being good THEN. this is why i give
recognition to cer!
tain djs and producers, yet i don't feel that just because i enjoy their
older stuff and they paved the way for artists whom i enjoy now, that i have
to book them, listen to their stuff that has completely fallen off in
quality, or buy their cds or whatever just because of who they are. too bad
not everyone recognizes that. i am just glad that there will always be
people out there who will make something that isn't tired and played and
will produce quality releases and not just rest on past triumphs.

just my personal opinions, take 'em or leave them...
lauryn.

one more time - DEMF trips from outside the U.S.

2001-05-07 Thread Tim Pratt
A few weeks back, I posted a message saying I was interested in talking to
some folks coming to Detroit for the festival.
I received a number of great responses, but need a few more.
So if you're heading to the DEMF and you live outside the U.S., I'd still
like to hear from you. This is for a story that will run in a Detroit-area
publication. Basically, I'm interested in finding out why you're coming, how
far in advance you had to make your plans, if it's going to be costly to
you, what you expect, if you've ever been to the U.S. and/or Detroit, if
you're coming by yourself or with a group, and so on.
Please email me back privately.
Thank you!

Well, the last few times I have seen him he has dished out the freebies

even taken a few punters under his wing by letting them have the guest

I suppose you have a few alternate stories as everyone has. In fact, what
about other DJ's; lets seperate the moodies from the downright nice.

I heard him a few weeks ago. He playted a nice set. The only 'problem' with

just does he thing and if you don't like it, bad luck. Fortunatly i do like
his sets.

Orlando used to be DMC champion. In the earlt ninties i he played 35 records
in 30 minutes :)

I saw Orlando a few years back at House of God alongside
 Surgeon. I much
 preferred what he was doing.
The roof went off when he dropped the 2 copies of Flash; the
 rest of the
night's music was in a similar vein. I also remember thinking what a
terrific idea it was when I saw Voorn leaving, there was
 Surgeon trundling
behind struggling with his record box, whilst Voorn just
 strolled along with
his on a sort of personal airport trolley. Where can I get one?

[313] Neil Landstrumm, Christian Vogel etc...

2001-05-07 Thread Jonny McIntosh
I love old Landstrumm from the Peacefrog days. Played some tonight. Since
then a lot of it has been close but no cigar for me. His contribution to
one of the New Electronica comps was quite nice and a good change of pace
though. The Blue Arsed Fly stuff was nice too. I don't think Russ
Gabrielle's In The Bag remix has ever strayed too far from my crate (not
 that that really counts).

Definitely with you here... In The Bag is superb. The previous Blue Arsed
Fly release, it might have been on Sativae?, I had to get rid of because of
the disgusting label art :) I also prefer his earlier stuff on Peacefrog,
the Index Man EP being essential - none of this shows up so often these
days, either. I had the good fortune to catch Landstrumm live at Sativae
many years ago (where Tarrida was resident DJ, a job to which he is better
suited IMO) where he climbed down onto the stage from the lighting rig. He
used to work in a video shop out Tollcross way, too. What a time for techno
in Edinburgh that was: Sativae every other week with Pure being good in
between!

Jonny.

I really hope nobody decided to go to this after my info on Friday. It was
embarrassingly awful. Some cliched disco cut ups (at best) from Mr. Ibiza

(guess what his next release will sound like... Groove La Chord, the fade up
the chord, change the drum programming pattern - my girlfriend actually fell
asleep during this) and Derrick May, after initially promising much, petered
out to fairly dull harder stuff. I haven't even mentioned the Bingo hall
like venue or all (50 or so of) the cheesy clientele. I can't stress how
sorry I am for mentioning it... even if it was free. Sorry, sorry and thrice

2001-05-07 Thread fab137

This might be a stupid question but HOW does one
download a realaudio-mix to the harddrive?

When you open a RealAudio file a .ram file gets copied onto your HD, usually
in your temporary internet files if youre on a pc. locate that file and open
it in a text editor. there you should find the a link to the downloadable
.rm file on the server. it doesn't always work but there's no harm in
trying! BTW, if the realaudio feed comes from a .cgi (like betalounge) its
not possible to do this.or at least i haven't found a way!!

That's what I mean. There are 2 types of Real Audio files. One is streaming
(which cannot be captured), the other is a downloadable file. That one you
can locate and save.

I haven't tried Mr. Bloch's suggestion in years. I couldn't do it back in
'97 or 98 and just stopped trying.

RE: [313] TWILO!!!

2001-05-07 Thread John Osselaer

Grr, just subscribed to the NY Times to bring you this:

From today's NY Times

City Closes Dance Club Over Problems With Permits

By ERIC LIPTON

wilo, a popular Chelsea nightclub, was shut down early yesterday, at least
temporarily, after the police and building inspectors raided the club and
evicted hundreds of patrons, saying that several of the club's building
permits were missing or invalid.

The move comes as the Giuliani administration intensifies its long- running
battle against a handful of Manhattan dance clubs that city officials say
are havens of drug use and occasional violence.

No one at Twilo was arrested in yesterday's raid, police officials said.

Instead, officials shut the club, at 530 West 27th Street, between 10th and
11th Avenues, after determining that its certificate of occupancy and place
of assembly permits had not been properly issued or maintained. Officials
also said that the club's fire protection plan was not up to date and that
it had not gotten required approvals for first-floor renovations.

A Department of Buildings spokesman said the six-year-old club, known for
its electronic music and dancing that lasts until well after dawn, would not
be allowed to reopen until the violations were resolved.

They are shut down until further notice, indefinitely, said the spokesman,
Paul Wein, adding that a June 21 court date had been set.

Peter R. Sullivan, a lawyer for the club, said the violations were technical
and called the club's closing unjustified. Absolute guaranteed it will be
reopened, he said.

The enforcement tactic used yesterday reflected a strategy by the city to no
longer issue or renew permits to Twilo and other troubled clubs, unless
ordered to do so by the court. That means that if a permit expires or needs
to be amended, even for a relatively minor inconsistency, the city may
refuse to do so and then shut the club down, Deputy Mayor Rudy Washington
said.

For example, part of the justification for closing Twilo yesterday,
officials said, was that its basement assembly permit was invalid, at least
in part, because it was issued to Sound Factory, a club that used to operate
at that location.

Mr. Washington was not ready to declare a lasting victory against Twilo,
saying that the city's action could be overturned in court.

It is now their move, Mr. Washington said, referring to the club
management. This is not over by no stretch of the imagination.

The Giuliani administration has been trying to close Twilo since at least
November 1998, when the city, citing the drug overdose of a patron, filed a
lawsuit declaring the club a public nuisance. City officials contend that
clubs like Twilo and the Tunnel, another West 27th Street establishment, do
not do enough to prevent the use and sale of drugs like ecstasy and GHB, or
gamma hydroxybutyrate.

But the clubs have just as vehemently responded that they are doing their
part, hiring private security officers, including some who work undercover,
to try to prevent drug use and violence. Mr. Sullivan said the fact that the
state courts have allowed Twilo to stay open despite the lawsuit was proof
that the club was well managed and dedicated to preventing drug sales.

City officials, meanwhile, said that the evidence of the severity of the
drug problem at Twilo is on display when the club is open: management hires
a private ambulance to wait outside, ready to take patrons who have
overdosed to hospital emergency rooms.

The Giuliani administration's dance club enforcement effort was stepped up
after April 9, when Terrence Davis, a 16-year-old who had been ejected from
the Tunnel, was stabbed to death about two blocks from that club. A fire
broke out at Twilo on a weekend night about a month ago, but the club was
reopened the same night.

Mr. Sullivan said the city's efforts were misguided. It is very sad that
the city continues to hide the absence of a policy concerning drug abuse by
the dancing public by demonizing Twilo, he said.

Twilo regulars, some of whom learned of the news yesterday on the club's
Internet site, seemed to agree with Mr. Sullivan. Almost all clubs have
fire code violations, one patron wrote on the site's message board. The
patron called the code violations an excuse to ensure that there are no
bumps in the road in Giuliani's Disney-gentrification plan to have NYC
become an ultraconservative suburb.

Why was it shut down? All those private ambulances waiting
 for the OD'ing kids?

sending them for medical help, to avoid action by the city.

[313] Re: Marshall Jefferson

2001-05-07 Thread Mark Freitas

Funny that you should mention this because Derrick May had some serious
affection for Chicago and its sound before he embarked upon techno. Derrick
frequently went to Chicago, both for records and clubbing. Who has heard of
a club called The Bismarck? Apparently Lil' Louis played there a lot and
Derrick was influenced by him (or so I have been told). It think it is hard
to deny that Detroit techno learnt a lesson or two from the brotha's in the
Windy City.

The Bismarck was a theater on Randolph Street in the loop. It's not the
Cadillac Palace, so Detroit got back. Lil' Louis' parties came later -
the Detroit scene was first budding by then. The early stuff was at
the warehouse, and the crazy stuff was at the Music Box (*not* to be confused
with the theater of the same name).

Back in the eighties it was *all* house - Detroit just had its own electro
influenced take that was dubbed Techno House. A lot of us used to make
the trip to Chicago on the weekends to check out the scene. Detroit and
Chicago are close geographically and the exchange of ideas has always been
healthy.

Anyway Marshall and Lil' Louis were really different camps. Marshall
and Larry Heard were more on the gay scene whereas Lil' Louis' parties
were mostly str8.

I heard Marshall spin an outdoor rave a few years back - it made me think
of the old Metra picnics :-)

It was apparantly over some building permits? Who knows how long it
will last. However, I've heard a rumor that none other than Martha Stewart
will be buying the building in the near future, so she can make even more
money. I don't know exactly what she plans on doing with the space, if it's
indeed true. Maybe she will be creating an ecstasy/rave type club for horny
housewives or something?

Here's hoping your wish comes true for good, Alex ;) Oh, but then we won't
get to hear Richie and John for $35. Damn it!

Gotta luv NY...

There's a program called Total Recorder that acts as a virtual audio router
so you can digitally record your soundcard's wav output, letting you record
any sounds coming out of your machine.

Recently I picked up a beatup Detroit style acid stomper from Planet
Detroit called Gracious Livin' . The label says it was made by KD, can
someone tell me who KD is and what else they've done? thanks. Its on
Crosstrax records out of England.

That's what I mean. There are 2 types of Real Audio files. One is
streaming
(which cannot be captured), the other is a downloadable file. That one you
 can locate and save.

I haven't tried Mr. Bloch's suggestion in years. I couldn't do it back in
'97 or 98 and just stopped trying.

This might be a stupid question but HOW does one
download a realaudio-mix to the harddrive?

When you open a RealAudio file a .ram file gets copied onto your HD,
 usually
in your temporary internet files if youre on a pc. locate that file and
 open
it in a text editor. there you should find the a link to the downloadable
.rm file on the server. it doesn't always work but there's no harm in
trying! BTW, if the realaudio feed comes from a .cgi (like betalounge) its
not possible to do this.or at least i haven't found a way!!

 good luck

the upper floors, they are all being notified of the event and permission
has been secured with the OWNERS of the building. The main floor 2 very
large spaces connected by a hallway.

3. THE OWNERS HAVE ALLOWED US TO USE THE BUILDING. I FEEL THIS IS WORTH

accurate info regarding this event. They are talking out of their a**. You

5. THE PRICE OF ADMISSION HAS BEEN REDUCED TO 20 DOLLARS. Advance

6. Everyone entering must have ID (18+). This will be an alcohol and drug
free event. This is not a rave. We are trying to promote a mature

I think he's pretty good. He's a goofball behind the decks, but can play a
damned good set. Almost as good as me (hahahaha!)

I've seen him spin a few times, all of 'em were good sets(including one
 tag
team with him and Carl Craig).

FYI - Hes a goofball when NOT behind the decks too.

I'm not sure if they make 'em anymore, but Novation has one called the
MM10x. It's a 25 key controller that looks identical to the BassStation
keyboard (They basically used the MM10x and dropped synth guts into it). I
have an MM10x, it's not a bad board.

I am looking for a midi controller that is light and
small. Possibly running on batteries. A dx-100,
cz-101, and a dh-100 come to mind. What other ones are
there?

cheap is a good thing too

Naaah. Some of those wrecks were because some chick decided that she could
dance on the side of the stage. I remember them stopping the music and
saying that it wasn't their fault.

yeah, i remember there being quite a bit of goofing around when he did that
tag team with carl...ALOT...and a few trainwrecks because of it, but who
cares...he has fun. and that is what counts. if he has fun then the crowd
has fun

Re: [313] Real audio 2 CDR(was online mix track id)

2001-05-07 Thread Matthew L. Thompson
If you can locate the URL that links you directly to the .ra file itself,
you can type the location into your web browser and download it onto your
hard drive (unless of course, it is cgi-based, as someone properly pointed
out... you could try it anyway to see if it works though). Downloading the
.ram file (metafile) does no good, as this file simply tells the web browser
to launch your realmedia player and then points the player to the actual
location of the .ra file itself. You can download the .ram file (right
click as save as) and then open it with Notepad, that will tell you the
location of the .ra file itself. As far as burning it to CD, you'd have to
convert the .ra file to .wav format... either the old fashioned analog way
(speaker output to cassette deck or mini-disc or whatever, then back to the
computer's hard drive via line input) or use a program like ra2wav that will
do it digitally for you.

This might be a stupid question but HOW does one
download a realaudio-mix to the harddrive?

When you open a RealAudio file a .ram file gets copied onto your HD,
usually
in your temporary internet files if youre on a pc. locate that file and
open
it in a text editor. there you should find the a link to the downloadable
.rm file on the server. it doesn't always work but there's no harm in
trying! BTW, if the realaudio feed comes from a .cgi (like betalounge) its
not possible to do this.or at least i haven't found a way!!

 good luck
