[313] House ID's

2001-07-18 Thread stuffed bird
Hi,

Been vibing to a Lil Louis mix I got from somebody (I believe he had it from
the deephouse page) and I just gotta know this track. Its bassline vaguely
reminds me of 'The Word Is Love' by Steve 'Silk' Hurley, and even the whole
feel of this track reminds me of that classic. Lyrics are: keep pushing on,
things are gonna get better, it won't take long, keep on pushing to the top
and then there is another chorus: reach on up and reach on in, keep on pushing
and you'll win which repeats itself for a couple of minutes.
It's NOT 'Rise' by Eddie Amador...

Another track I've been hunting down is a house track in a similar vain which
I heard Derrick Carter, Joe Claussell, Llorca play this weekend, so it should
be fairly recent. Can't tell you much about it, it's a vocal track with a
chorus speaking of 'time and time again'. Quite a minimal house groove, but a
couple of times somes keys / piano licks kick in and heat up the track.

Trainspotters ready?...set...

[313] Bjork - The Hunter Remix

2001-07-18 Thread stuffed bird
Stuffed Bird's trivia continues...sorry for the waste of
bandwidth!

Been searching the world over for any info on a remix of
Bjork's 'The Hunter' that Laurent Garnier played a lot in
1999/2000. I was once told that it was a remix by
Funkstorung, which made sense because they have remixed
more Bjork-tracks.
The track itself is a 4/4 house/techno remix with the
complete unchanged lyrics and a string arrangement that
keeps surging up and down once started.

[313] CEX, MARUMARI, STARS AS EYES, IOWA CITY 7/20

2001-07-18 Thread Kent williams
WHO: CEX, MARUMARI, STARS AS EYES
WHEN: 10PM July 20th
WHERE: THE GREEN ROOM (509 S Gilbert (319) 354 4350)

CEX (Baltimore/Tigerbeat6) Skinny white boy Rjyan Kidwell is single-handedly
putting fun and showmanship into electronic music. His combination of
crunchy laptop beats, singing, rhyming and antics makes him one of the
most entertaining live shows around these days. Part Kool Keith, part
Andy Kaufman, and all CEX.

MARUMARI (CARPARK) Josh Marumari's SUPERMOGADON album is THE summer electronic
CD to own -- sunny, warm tunes with great depth of detail. Marumari is
going to BLOW UP this year -- you can say you saw him in the funky little
Green Room when he's on the Grammys with Bjork.

STARS AS EYES (Tigerbeat6) A sort of Pink Floyd for the new milleneum?
Tigerbeat6's newest artist has been receiving rave reviews for their
spacey live sets this summer.

So make yourself cool and come check it out. This is in a small club
with excellent sound, so if you're into Electronic music, this is the show
of the summer...

[313] re: Area 1

2001-07-18 Thread James David Beard
The t-shirts for the Area 1 festival don't even list any of
the Detroit DJs names. They lump them all together under
Innovators. A bit of a scam imo as anybody who doesn't
already know about Juan, Derrick, and Kevin isn't likely to
have a clue as to who the innovators are. So there goes
the support for Detroit really. The website wouldn't
announce who would be DJing or when. I went to the Columbia
MD show, and due to traffic, I got to dance outside the side
tent exit for the last 10mins of Juan Atkins's set.
Couldn't get in cause people were crowding at the entrance
for Paul O. Well, at least outkast was fun. It really makes
my skin crawl to think that for so many people, especially
in the United States, Moby IS techno. I actually watched the
first 15 minutes of his set from up close--Moby ran around
jumped on his korg triton keyboard more than he pretended
to play it, and in his own words masturbated with a heavy
metal guitar solo. He was arrogant and shameless, musically
moronic and completely devoid of funk. I used to to think
that he was kinda harmless--I don't believe that anymore.

Re: [313] UFO / 4 Art

2001-07-18 Thread Kevin Conrad
I don't think it's a misprint. 4 Art is the name of
the track on the Other Day ep and on his cd The Art
of Connecting. UFO is also on the CD. I don't why
he'd re-release 4 Art on a new EP, maybe he's broke
or something ;)

[313] OT/Nick Holder sample/Trainspotters

2001-07-18 Thread Rob Theakston

Hi All.

I'm on a bit of a mystery tangent here trainspotting wise. A friend of mine
about a year ago played me a track by Nick Holder's called Summer Daze
'99, and then he played me a track that Holder sampled by Pat Metheny. He
received this wisdom from a very wise old sage named Mike Grant. Anyone know
the name of the song or the album by Pat Metheny that this sample originates
from?

Winner gets free fries from McDonalds. Shipping extra.

Thanks,

RE: [313] Bjork - The Hunter Remix

2001-07-18 Thread Brian Dillard
it's not funkstorung - they only remixed all is full of love. it's
probably the skothus mix by icelandic group gusgus (or rather the two
members who are djs and also record as t-world). it's an icy tech-house
treatment ... about seven minutes long ... brilliant. go to www.bjork.com
for a full discography to find the various formats on which it appeared.

in a somewhat related vein, anyone else here a fan of carl craig's remix of
gusgus's polyesterday? really amazing, either the commercial mix or the
promo-only dub, imho

Stuffed Bird's trivia continues...sorry for the waste of
bandwidth!

Been searching the world over for any info on a remix of
Bjork's 'The Hunter' that Laurent Garnier played a lot in
1999/2000. I was once told that it was a remix by
Funkstorung, which made sense because they have remixed
more Bjork-tracks.
The track itself is a 4/4 house/techno remix with the
complete unchanged lyrics and a string arrangement that
keeps surging up and down once started.

WHO: CEX, MARUMARI, STARS AS EYES
 WHEN: 10PM July 20th
 WHERE: THE GREEN ROOM (509 S Gilbert (319) 354 4350)

CEX (Baltimore/Tigerbeat6) Skinny white boy Rjyan Kidwell is
single-handedly
putting fun and showmanship into electronic music. His combination of
crunchy laptop beats, singing, rhyming and antics makes him one of the
most entertaining live shows around these days. Part Kool Keith, part
 Andy Kaufman, and all CEX.

MARUMARI (CARPARK) Josh Marumari's SUPERMOGADON album is THE summer
electronic
CD to own -- sunny, warm tunes with great depth of detail. Marumari is
going to BLOW UP this year -- you can say you saw him in the funky little
Green Room when he's on the Grammys with Bjork.

STARS AS EYES (Tigerbeat6) A sort of Pink Floyd for the new milleneum?
Tigerbeat6's newest artist has been receiving rave reviews for their
 spacey live sets this summer.

So make yourself cool and come check it out. This is in a small club
with excellent sound, so if you're into Electronic music, this is the show
 of the summer...

[313] Love's Arrival, Major Ice

2001-07-18 Thread Vince Woolums
Hi all.

Got to check out the new Larry Heard CD Love's Arrival. Just about what
I've come to expect - nice, lower tempo house beats, solid vocals and great
composition. Standout tracks are Dew Drops, Another Night, Missing You (of
course!!) Jazz Cafe Mix and Direct Drive, which is on the recent limited
12. Both CD and 12 available on Track Mode records.

Major Ice is Terrence Parker's compilation CD published on his new imprint
label Real Right Records. Great selection of downtempo tracks, including
one by Iowa Citian and 313 cat Kent Williams called Piano Dub. Easily
one of the best non-techno tracks I've heard from you!! Great delays and
key lines. Speaking of key lines - wow - TP himself is rockin the chill
groove sounds with a remix of my all time fav. Seven Grand/TP track
Jessica. Word! Really really solid stuff. Another standout track is
TP's One Good Cry. Soundtrack material for real!! Weepy. This is a
beatless heartstring puller. Put this song over a sad scene in a sad film
and there'll be emotions pouring freely from the eyes...

Both should be available at your local purveyors of esoteric records and
CDs.

the name of the song or the album by Pat Metheny that this sample
originates
from?

Re: Re: [313] curious?

2001-07-18 Thread M. Todd Smith
Jayson I guess you missed lingo 101 last thursday so here's the update on
funk and soul:

funk: the groove that makes your body move
soul: the emotion you feel from the music

funk and soul have nothing to do with 'good' and 'solid'. In fact someone
can mix with a plethora of funk and soul and still not be good or solid.

if a track contains no funk or soul that it would probably not move or touch
a crowd, it becomes the forgettable classic. The song you can't sing in
your head, is the one you forget most often.

Cheers
todd

This past tour he did, I witnessed a DJ set that any other hard Euro DJ
would have done. It was boring and funkless (basically loops).

I'm sorry, but it really bothers me when the words 'funk' and 'soul' as if
they are synonymous with 'good' and 'solid.' *I* am not a person who has
funk or soul, does this mean i'm a bad person? Just because a track
doesn't
contain these elements does not mean its bad.
