Re: (313) save me, I think I'm going over to the darkside...
Yes, I agree. Just because it is popular doesn't mean it shouldn't be relevant. People forget that Kraftwerk had top 40 hits. I really adore a lot of the 'French touch', and French house, I think the overall quality is v hugh and the French have a wonderful eccentricity in the music. Discovery is a sublime album! Homework is a classic. This latest just disappointed me, however. DP is as 313 as you can get mn! ok, jokes aside, i always thought Homework was some sort of tribute album to Detroit, Chicago and New York...i mean, the references were pretty clear to me, and thats what made it enjoyable. to be honest, i used to listen to it when it had just come out, and this was when i was *just* starting to investigate electronic music, and way before listening to incunabula (which for me was like an epiphany) fab. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Wednesday, March 23, 2005 3:42 PM Subject: RE: (313) save me, I think I'm going over to the darkside... *puts on spw hat* right. so talking about theo parrish or italo disco isn't on (innovative, fresh sounding - at respective periods of course), cos it aint techno enough, but talking about a daft electronic disco-pop band is alright? come off it. theres nothing innovative or forward thinking about daft-punk. there isn't supposed to be, that aint the point, so its hardly suitable for here is it? bah. load of tosh. *takes off spw hat* _ - End of message text This e-mail is sent by the above named in their individual, non-business capacity and is not on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. (313) 'Snowflake falling' ...
Just looked-up Juan Atkins on the iTunes Music Store. There's a lot of classic stuff on there (including some of the great recent New Religion material.) But wait. What is this odd-looking entry on an LP called 'Christmas Eclectic' (genre: 'holiday') with a track called 'Snowflakes Falling'? The compilation appears to be a sort of Christmas gift record. I'm not wanting to believe that the track 'Snowflakes Falling' is actually the man himself. Going by the sample, it's about +12 on the cheesy, cornball, schamltz scale (add your own adjectives!). It's got kids singing, twee lyrics, triangles etc. But I have to say: those chord changes, that melody, that bassline, even the synth sequencing they *do* have a certain familiar feel to them. Someone tell me I'm way off-beam or this may turn into a little cause celebre! Ken Music is an open sky. http://bleep43.com

Yeah man, they're good but it's just not my sort of thing...too soulfull for me... A friend of mine was once talking to a relatively well-known trance acid techno DJ (well-known in Reading anyway), and when he told her the sort of music he was into, she replied with, so you play that *funky* stuff then?, pronouncing the word funky as though it was a synonym for baby-eating or Hitlerian. It's quite strange to think that, for a lot of people, funk and soul really ought to be purged rather than nurtured. That hi-hat pattern's too funky. Turn off the shuffle etc. Brendan

(313) 3 new 7's
MP3's? Last weeks thing already. Check out the exciting new format that's taking the kids by storm- 7's! Captain Comatose- To My Song/Say CC (playhouse) Bizzare and amusing, B-Side kind of comes off as a Morris Day/The Time sort of live jam thing but with a big squelchy acid-bass rumbling underneath. Aquanauts- Cruiship Killa/Frustrated (UR) Really not liking the A Side- pretty hackneyed comedy electro but the B-Side is much more off the wall and darker. Hieroglyphic Being- can't remember the title More Mills-ian noodlings on one side- (really like it though) and a track that made both of my cats' ears go WAY back when I played it 5 mins ago. on Blue vinyl too! nice Jason

this the blue one init? clips sound really goodinteresting and non-formulaic need to snag one robin... That's the one- it raised an interesting point for me though. Since I don't buy records on-line (except second hand) how would you rate this record over a 30 second audio clip? It's one of those records that meanders along really nicely and flows well over a fairly long period- how do you make purchasing decisions on this type of record (and others like it) from such a short sample? Have you ever missed anything because it didn't sound that good over the space of 30 seconds? Jason

Actually got round to giving it another listen, and it's not really glitchy at all. Sorry, that's the sort of inaccurate impressions you get when snatch a 30 second listen when you're running out of the house. However, still quite like the tracks, I guess they're at the melodic end of minimal techno, if we're going to get all categorical about it. Worth a listen anyhow.

It's one way that they got such brilliant results out of many producers whose 'challenged' origins inevitably made some of them 'difficult to work with'. Arguably, those German folks are still getting great results in the same way, today. K

Jason

I don't mind the B-side of the Aquanauts, I guess me and fizzing synth lines just aren't friends. RE: (313) Slowing down (was Stasis)
I don't really remember when faster tempo's took over or became as much of a deal. I remember older electro (we called it bootyshake music down here). Like hip hop be bop is hecka slow. Most older house used to be pretty slow. Secret tapes of dr eich I remember being pretty slow( at least my neigborhood, parking garage politics, and slam dance). Optic nerve quasar is about there. Those old legowelt trax that JT posted awhile back, pretty slow. I don't think tempo was as big of a deal back then. Thing were still very wide open. This brings me to a conversation that took place between myself and a friend over the weekend. We were on typical Sunday morning after status (treats still in the bloodstream, wine in a glass, 7:30 am, shades on, in a lawn chair on the patio) when he started playing a bunch of older orbital, and slower breakyer rave stuff. Mostly the dubby bassy deep bidness. We had a long talk about the raves we used to go to (not sure if it was the same overseas) and! there was almost always a point (usually 6-7AM) when the party would go underwater and everyone would be locked into a kind of psychedelic midtempo, bodyrock. It's what we looked forward to everytime. No more madness and chaos, just a beat and a vibe controlling like 2000 people at once. Are there any dj's playing that futuristic bodyrock anymore (it wasn't like electro, but drew from it and freestyle just the same)? Do you even know what I'm talking about? Maybe I'll get Jim to do a mix. Kamal K. Haven't clocked the bpms yet but I'd say they are 120 and slower. Like the Rekid Era EP on SoulJazz. I just dig the slow simmer - and I can then mix dub/reggae, slower electro, acid house, old funk records, etc. into it without distorting the vocals. is because I've been looking for it or is there more new music (techno/house) with low bpm now than there has been in the last five years? (no bandwagons here :) ) such a great tune in, fact that whol other people place lp is timeless. robin...
