why not try tech house or tribal house? i'm sure you could find stuff that
would blend, if you like that type of style. deep Detroit tracks would be
great but i think they would crash into a trance style. maybe if you did
electro/tech house type tracks like early Martian and early Shake?

i need some suggestions for good traks to buy
as i have to do a tagteam djing thing with a
guy heavily into paul van dyk style trance
anthems.
bear in mind i haven't bought any new vinyl
for about eight months, anything deemed
essential from this time period would be great.
maybe someone who works in a shop (say, Record Time)
could advise me on all the new releases coming
out of detroit and the u.s. as i wouldn't want
to ignore those...:)

and how the hell do you blend hands-in-the-air trance
with deepest detroit?
any suggestions please.

i LOVE it. the first track, a1-Power, is like a mix between tribal house

with either style in mind. it mixes well with a lot of the more

Re: [313] do you remember?

i was also a little lukewarm about Afrika Bambataa at the Michigan League in
AA. no disrespect or anything, but i expected a more diverse set. he spun
hiphop for about half an hour, and that's when i decided to leave (on the
flyer it said electro).

it was fun though, i got to see my friend DJ Ro spin and he fu*#ing slammed
even though the crowd wasn't digging Chicago house tracks he played.

for those of you that enjoyed his set, you can see DJ Ro again next week at
the Pierpont Commons. should be great.

Hi all,

A very nice evening, a low-key and friendly atmosphere and plenty of great
tracks to dance to -- once again Richie delivered. Thanks to list member
Dennis I was able to come from Chicago to check this out. Thanks also to
my Trumbull friends for putting me up for the weekend! I had a brilliant
time in Detroit, like I always do whenever I have the good fortune to
visit.

re: Afrika Bambaata/AUX 88 at the Majestic -- a bit disappointing for
me. I thought AUX was decent, but perhaps I expected too much. Opening
talent rocked it with some nice electro tracks, though. Breakfast in
Greektown, however, kicked ass -- my roommate would be pleased to hear that
she even yelled opa at 4am when she lit the cheese on fire. ;)

re: Lil Louis blackout discussion -- Acquaviva played this at the
10/28/00 Plus 8 party and the night took off from there. So so sweet. To
the person who posted the link to the mp3 at stereo88.com -- how do I
access other mp3s on that site? Is there a search function?

and did we settle the discussion of I called you, but you weren't
there? Everyone keeps posting that it's a different track.

looking forward to my next visit as well as to 313-to-312-visitors,
Dave

electronic music. Its the same old I want my

I'll be obliged to hate them debate we have here

This is the issue with the Richie Hawtin @ Gatecrasher
thing. It seems kind of hypocritical to criticise the
mainstream for being too sterile, yet as soon as they
take an interest in our music, we're up in arms.

I think a lot of people think of our music as if it is
our child so to speak. We diss them nasty,
good-for-nothing kids outside for their behaviour and
don't want our kid playing with them (I know it sounds
kinda stupid but...).

The only way to resolve this issue IMO is for the
mainstream to change so that the music industry isn't
a world of superstars and underground music and stuff.
People need to be allowed to like what they like, not
what is said to be cool. We might give the other
kids a chance if they were willing to change. Places
like Gatecrasher need to stop bringing in dj's that
they know will sell and bring some real music in. Not
just techno either the whole system is wrong at the
moment.

Just thinking,
Nick (Dj Pacific:)

dj sneak/derrick carter track splits

2001-03-10 Thread Michael Kim
if you're using Nero, you can split up the tracks to your liking. i use it
to split mixes found on Napster.

this one's for DJ Sneak/Derrick Carter-Live at the End, London

duration of tracks is as follows:

4:28.04
1:27.37
3:53.62
2:11.38
3:55.57
3:56.05
3:26.09
5:27.28
3:11.70
3:40.69
3:19.33
2:19.28
4:32.11
3:55.28
3:13.68
3:59.36
4:45.17
4:15.37
1:58.40
4:29.16
1:32.33 (this is the last track so you won't have to make a split for this)

these are the durations of the tracks, so when you go into indexes, limits,
splits, just keep adding them to find your splits. so the first split would
be at 4:28.04, the second would be at 5:55.41, the third would be at
9:49.03, etc.

now if someone could help me out with the tracklisting :)

take care,
Mike

Re: [313] mp3 to cd with winamp

2001-03-08 Thread Michael Kim
a 74 minute cd can hold up to 76 minutes and some seconds of audio. you
*may* run into a greater risk of error but if you're using high quality
media (and you should be) there shouldn't be any problems.

Mike

Subject: [313] mp3 to cd with winamp

If there is a 78 min mix and I only have a 74 min CD,
then I use Winamp to chop off the last bit. What you
do is click on the little V that is next to your
visualization display (either the moving bars or the
moving line). Then configure the output and select
Nullsoft Disk Writer. This takes anything Winamp
plays and creates a wav file, it is sent to any
directory you want. Once this is set up, go to play
the desired 78 minute MP3. You won't hear anything
because Winamp is crunching out a wav file AND THE
TRICK IS: *STOP* the song just before it hits the 74
minute mark. Now you are ready to burn that CD, no
other software needed!

A problem that I encounter is that Winamp crunches the
wav out FAST, and when I stop the file, I may not have
stopped it in time. No big deal, just try again.

players dribbling the ball rhythmically? i know this sounds kind of stupid,
but the sound in that commercial wouldn't sound so out of place in a

MILLSART - EVERY DOG HAS IT'S DAY II - AXIDS (US): It's all been said
already. I'm only left wondering if there'll be a 2x CD release. That would
be nice to have too.

That's it. I'm happy. Tomorrow it's time to put this stuff to work. Perhaps
a new mix is on the way?

cd only fits 76-80 minutes. there are going to be shining parts of every

does anybody know where i can friggin get Axis 009? i think the track on

Just snagged myself a copy of Live At The Liquid Rooms (Too Late I
know (So Sue Me)), and noticed an odd thing. The date recorded it says
is 28:10:95, but several of the records (Co-incedentally all
Axis/Purpose Maker Releases) state the copyright date as '96. It seems
to me that Jeff is obviously using white Labels and/or acetates of
forthcomign releases (at the time). not that there's anythiong wrong
with this of course ;)

And the segmenting of the set is a bloody pain in the arse too. Why
couldn't they've recorded it in one go, i ask ya?

Still, it's a cracking mix

Forgive this Rambling if it makes not much coherent sense.

i saw that Snoop performance about six or seven years ago, with the live

what's wrong with RB/rappers doing live instrument music? Mos Def did it
on the Tonight Show a few weeks ago and it sounded smooth as hell.

Hip hop originated as electronic music, so getting
back to the roots of hip
hop with live musicians won't work.

 Ollie

they were not saying anything about getting back to
the roots, simply that live instruments will be
existing more more in the electronic music
genres

and possibly replacing the dj/ synth or whatever
during the live show and pruducers artist seem to be
into making this happen as of late.

I also forgot to mention some other hip hop stuff. i sat down and was
looking throught my CD's and realised that i have more then i thought.
Check out anything produced by Steve Pitts. He does all his work with The
Dayton Family, Shoestring, Bootleg, and Jake tha Flake...If you like the
harder hip hop and rap it is right up your alley. He likes to put alot of
funk in the music. much better then just listening to wordds and beats.
There is also DJ Skrew out of Houston. everything he does is slowed down
and pitched down to make things real mellow. some of the newer stuff isn't
his best, so i recommend his older stuff.he has a nice loose groove
spinning around him. De La Soul's new one is pretty good. we talked about
that here. But if you are just starting with hip hop then i suggest Run
DMC

and NWA for obvious reasons. they are still the best.

yep - take off the plate - use a screwdriver to peel off the next layer,

What layer, where?? you can almost adjust the pitch without even taking
off

the plate (almost), but I don't know of any additional layers, is it
different over there??

The pitch is actually quite hard to get back to the default state. If you
don't have a meter to read the pull from the diodes, you are forced to put
the platter back on and stare at the little red dots for calibration (often
resulting in a big headache;). *Then* the almost impossible thing is
getting *all four* red dots to jive with each other and that little table
next to the on/off switch!! It's one thing to get one dot to match the
guide on the deck, but to get all four to coincide with the guide is next
to

impossible after you manually adjust it.

Of course, this really doesn't matter, if you good, you can play on
anything... ;)

twist the little thingee that says pitch adj. (small potmeter(is it
called

 that in english?))

Re: [313] OT: Tube Compression (was Basic Channel sound)

2000-12-20 Thread Michael Kim

it actually works by clipping the hell out of the signal.

okay, EE alert, so if you don't want a technical explanation, delete now.
8o)

when a signal gets clipped, it basically 'chops off' the top of the waveform
and this distortion is shown in harmonics; multiples of the fundamental
frequency. say you have a 100 Hz frequency, even order harmonics would be
200 hz, 400 Hz, etc. odd order harmonics would be 300 Hz, 500 Hz, etc.

when solid state stuff clips, you get odd-order harmonics. odd-order
distortion sounds bad, bad, bad.

when tube stuff clips, you get even-order harmonics. even-order harmonics
tends to make the sound warmer, rosier, softer.

below clipping, they are audibly very similar.

Sorry for the OT post, but I know the people on this list can give me the
help I need!

Can someone explain exactly how a compressor can give tracks that nice warm
sound? I know that Maurizio and the likes use a compressor almost as an
instrument. How is this done? What sound qualities is the compressor
putting into the track? The only compression I've ever messed with was on
ReBirth and in SoundForgethe only thing I could really get it to do was
to reduce clipping.

I'm making deep dubby techno and house stuff and I know that eventually
I'll

want to pick up a tube compressor to help my sound...but right now I'm
clueless as to what it will actually do for me. Anyone out there
knowledgable on this subject?

Also, what are some good brands/models of tube compressors? Would I be
able

to get a decent one for around $500?

Thanks so much for any help! Again, I apologize for the OT post. The Tech
Gear list tends to not be very active sometimes.

I am preety sure the domain was a mirror for to the demf.org site as well.

..Needless to say everybody was excited as this domain name could attract
ALOT
of attention. He had just about every good web designer in the Detroit
area
offering to design the page. He had at least a dozen qualified offers
and

 submissions thrown his way.
I would love to see some sites that use the very talented designs of Abdul
Haqq. I have been patiently waiting to see some of Haqq's work online (the
brief interview with him and Derrick May in 'universal techno' even shows
them talking about putting his work online. I know he has a web page but
like most web sites these days they often don't get updated. Usally due to
a

'lack of content' (hell, i am guilty of this myself).

I tried to let him know that it IS just
a web page, and that web pages don't bring about enlightenment and we
should

 go ahead and design something.
The thing is it could be much more, here are some suggestions for what i
would like to see on a detroittechno.org/com/net site.

- a 313 FAQ!
- a guide to all Detroit releases with a voting system and notes that can
be

submitted by anyone that is a subscriber.
- a guide to where to stay in Detroit, how to get to Detroit!
- a guide to all artists and DJ's
- a guide to all radio stations
- esp a guide to any Detroit techno 'people' that have an online presence.
- interviews and background info that we can point people to read about
Detroit producers.
- sound files in real audio.
- a detailed rundown of famous Detroit clubs (Music Institute, Shelter..)
- as David said It could have been an excellent vehicle for the current
generation of new Detroit producers.
- web forums to discuss all these areas.
- information on how to book these artists and DJ's
- info on those DJ's and producers that are no longer living in Detroit but
are regarded as from Detroit.
- information about Detroit filmakers, animators, writers etc, designers.
- info on the people that have inspired the music/culture of Detroit
techno.

It could have been a medium to tell the world (SHOW the
world) what's really going down in Detroit.

that is sad. I hope someone gets motivated and sets up a site like the
ideas

i have suggested above. For far too long what we hear about Detroit techno
is filtered from old PR and old magazine interviews..some reviews these
days

still refer to the liner notes of records that were released 10+ years
ago...

time for some WWW action!

It was taken from the Caustic Window (a.k.a. Aphex Twin) Joyrex J9ii 12
and it
reappears on the Caustic Window compilation CD (RePHLeX CAT 009 CD),
which is
something I hope everyone on this list owns, since it contains some of
the most
brutal, mind-blowing, life-changing Techno music ever released by
mankind.

The track name is The Garden Of Linmiri.

any tips on where i might acquire this incredible cd of which you speak?
(i did look on groovetech. no dice).

question about Time to Shine, Motor 9/16

2000-11-10 Thread Michael Kim
if that wasn't TP spinning at Motor during the first two hours at Time to
Shine on Sep. 16, who was it? i've been listening to the set on the
archives at http://www.groovetech.com/motor/archives.html, and they thank TP
for spinning and everything. the whole set just SOUNDS like it was done by
TP too.

also, is there anyone that wants to do a track ID, for, well, the whole
first two hours? 8o) there are a lot of classics in there that i don't
know the name to, that i absolutely HAVE to have.

most urgently: track that kicks in at 28:47, 39-something (vocal house
track), and 53:17.

Moreover, I know it was NEVER Juan's intention to be underground at all.
He's ALWAYS had dreams of being a big money-grip, black supastar, it merely
convoluted into something special and different and he went with the flow
of

revenue, popularity and intellectualism musically.

But can you imagine not being known in your own city for nearly 20 years!!!

Honestly, recognition in other countries or on a completely different
continent is mind-blowing, but to have to return to to your home town and
be

a relatively unknown entity after changing and nearly revolutionizing the
recording industry at large is something that most Europeans just cannot
comprehend. Painful, really.

Then to see younger, white guys from nearby where you live get all the
accolades and play made that pain excruciating. That is the god's honest
truth about it.

I'm very proud and elated for Juan. It is embarassingly overdue and it
won't change him musically one blinkin' bit.

This all got me thinking about the way cars have been a continually
recurrent theme in techno: 'Landcruising', Le Car, 'Night Drive 'Thru
Babylon' etc etc etc. Then of course all the similarities between Ford's
robots and machine music etc. It's interesting how the car-based culture
of

Detroit (I should point out that this is only the impression I get - never
actually been to Detroit) has rubbed off on the music so much. I always
figured that good techno was the perfect driving music anyway. My cousin
once told me of having a near-religious experience listening to Derrick
May

whilst travelling on the M62 across the Pennines in Northern England!

Anyway, as regards this issue, I suppose still I'm basically not in favour
of artists letting major corporations use their music - something in me
makes me think it too often reduces the music to the status of mere
product.
At the same time, it's a great track from an underrecognised artist - the
record and Atkins both deserve a wider audience. I find it very hard to
condemn him for it. Guess I'll just stay right here on the fence on that
one...

One final thought; this is yet further proof of Detroit techno as future
music, not the has-been genre too many have cast it. Fifteen or however
many
years ago (someone?), 'No UFOs' connected with a relatively small audience
on its release. Now Ford are paying Atkins a presumably hefty wedge for
it's
use, presumably because they are convinced (and you have to figure they
did

research) it will reach a much wider audience in 2000. Maybe the world is
slowly catching up.

hey, now, race shouldn't play a part in this...

i think the real answer to that question is that Moby's music is the most
accessible in comparison to others. Bodyrock will appeal to a lot more
people than, say, Strings of Life or something like that. granted, Strings
of Life is a million times better, but popular appeal is more important to
them than true quality.

finally getting respect in the city where it was created. and i think
what
makes both completely related is DEMF. the city let something big like

Would this be related to Genral Motors booking Dj Bone to

 Greetings From TP!

I am sharing the following information with this list in hopes that it
will
create a basis for positive dialog / discussion of how we as DJs
 Promoters
work with each other to achieve the common goal of a banging party with
a

 REAL RIGHT vibe!
I especially hope that any aspiring / up-and-coming DJs and/or
Promoters

on
this list will take away something valuable which they can use.

Today Carl (the promoter behind the HOUSE EXPLOSION event) and I spoke
regarding the controversy centered on the flyer for the HOUSE EXPLOSION

agreed to ALL of my demands to resolve this issue of the improper use
of

my

Today I received 11 e-mail letters from cats who see nothing wrong with
a

person's name being listed on a flyer as a SPECIAL INVITED GUEST.
Furthermore, they asked why I was making such a big deal about it, and
thought I should be honored by the invitation. Well, I was honored! But
how
fine is the honor if it is bitter sweet?
I understand that many of us on this list are in various countries
 throughout
the world where the laws governing such matters are different. However,
 being
here in the USA, let me try to make my point by using an example . . .
.

.

   . . . . LET'S SAY I DECIDED TO THROW A PARTY AT THE STATE THEATER IN
 DETROIT
ON CHRISTMAS NIGHT. I THEN DRAFT A LETTER OF INVITATION TO MICHAEL

 I
THEN FAX THE LETTER TO MICHAEL JACKSON'S MANAGEMENT COMPANY. I NEVER
GET

A
RESPONSE FROM MICHAEL JACKSON, OR ANY OF HIS REPRESENTATIVES. HOWEVER,
I

 TAKE
IT UPON MYSELF TO MAKE FLYERS ADVERTISING MY CHRISTMAS PARTY AT THE
STATE

THEATER WITH SPECIAL INVITED GUEST - MICHAEL JACKSON!

I ASK YOU, MY FRIENDS, HOW LONG DO YOU THINK IT WOULD TAKE BEFORE
MICHAEL'S
LEGAL TEAM WOULD TAKE ACTION AGAINST ME? WOULD I BE WRONG TO ADVERTISE
MICHAEL'S NAME AS A SPECIAL INVITED GUEST? AFTER ALL, I DIDN'T SAY THAT
HE
WAS GOING TO PERFORM RIGHT? I DIDN'T EVEN SAY THAT HE WAS GOING TO BE
 THERE.
ALL I SAID WAS THAT HE WAS A SPECIAL INVITED GUEST. IN FACT, I COULD
PROVE
THAT I DID INDEED INVITE MR. JACKSON BY PRESENTING THE LETTER ALONG
WITH

A
COPY OF THE VERIFIED FAX TRANSMISSION TO MICHAEL'S MANAGEMENT WHICH
STATES
THAT I AM INVITING HIM TO ATTEND MY EVENT. SO I ASK YOU GOOD PEOPLE, IF
 MIKE,
NOR HIS PEOPLE RESPOND TO MY INVITATION, DO I HAVE THE RIGHT TO USE HIS
 NAME
IN ANY MANNER (EVEN AS A SPECIAL INVITED GUEST) IN PROMOTION OF MY
 EVENT?

WHY DID I MAKE SUCH A BIG DEAL ABOUT THIS? BECAUSE I HAVE TO TAKE A
STAND

 ON
WHAT I BELIEVE IS RIGHT, NOT ONLY BECAUSE IT AFFECTS ME, BUT BECAUSE
 SOMEDAY
(IF NOT TODAY) IT COULD AFFECT YOU!
MY POSITION WAS BASED UPON A PRINCIPLE WHICH IS PERSONAL TO ME, BUT
COMMON
 TO
 ALL OF US.

FOR THE RECORD DELANO SMITH FELT AS I DID, AND ALSO EXPRESSED HIS
CONCERN

OVER BEING LISTED ON THE FLYER. AS I UNDERSTAND IT,
HE TOO HAS RESOLVED HIS ISSUE WITH THE PROMOTER.

hi Nick,

after reading my post, i disagree with most of what i said too... i wish i
could take it back, but too many people have read it and responded to it, oh
well.

i guess what i meant to say was i just didn't want to see too many of the
'wrong' fans in this... i think one of the coolest things about going to a
good techno party or even a good techno club is that the majority of the
people understand it's about the music, and not the glory/image/popularity.
the majority of people who listen to underground music have this
appreciation for the music like no other.

i think Jaguar has the huge potential to bring new listeners in of all
different backgrounds and musical tastes, it has something to satisfy
everybody. i don't think it will necessarily be a bad thing to show it on
TV, but i also don't think it will necessarily be a bad thing for it NOT to
show on TV. i guess that was more of what i was trying to say.

There's still a lot of good hip hop about. Lots of
kids still sit on street corners doing it old school
style. In fact, I'm pretty sure there's a mailing list
similar to this one but for hip hop out there...

The truth of it is that the underground will never
die. You can't stop people from making music for the
love of it... It's the most primitive form of art,
bone whistles came before cave paintings (apparently)

 with me, and that's
exactly what will happen to most true future fans of
 the underground sound.
most people who will become fans of techno will find
 it sooner or later...
keeps the quality high, and the fans true.

 okay, flame away now. 8o)

just my $0.01 (does it deserve $0.02?)
