[AI] Uncovering the tracks of a spammer...

2006-09-24 Thread Sudhir R
Hi folks !

A female colleague has been receiving obscene mails for the last few months
which have become threatening of late. They are not in the general mould of
spams usually directed at mail domains and as soon as she spams out one
particular id, spam with the same content starts from another source. She
cannot spam out all strange mail ids since she also processes business-related
mails in the same account.

Since the content is uniform, she suspects the handiwork of someone she knows.
Unfortunately, the person seems to be shifting his accounts from one web mail
service to another.

Now, the question is, can reporting the matter to Police help in some way ? We
know of instances where such spammers have been caught by some co-ordinated
effort between the Police, ISPs and web mail providers, but, such instances
have been all based on Indian web mail servers like rediffmail, sify etc. Can
such co-ordination be achieved with international web mail servers like
yahoo.com, hotmail.com etc ? And, what if the person uses fraudulent
identities to create such mail accounts in the first place ?

Kindly advise as the matter concerns personal privacy and safety and urgent
action needs to be taken.

Thanks and regards

RS

[AI] Life insurance | does blindness cause us to pay higher premiums?

2006-09-24 Thread Manish Agrawal
Hi,
I'm interested in hearing people's experiences/views on the following:

1. If a blind person wants to insure his/her life, is the perceived
threat to life higher because of the vision condition? - this will
result in a higher premium.
2. Is there a circular/guideline from the government or any other
regulatory body clarifying the rules around this?
3. Do different insurance companies take differing views on the above?
-- will appreciate people specifying names of companies they've dealt
with.
4. Are any insurance schemes launched specially for the disabled by some
govt. financial institution?

Regards,
Manish

[AI] Google tools revisited

2006-09-24 Thread Vikas Kapoor
Google tools revisited

To test your proficiency many services are available. These are generally based
on the reverse search concept, where you have to guess the key-word(s) for
a given Google search output.

THIS WEEK NetSpeak takes a look at the latest tools/services related to Google.

Google has become such a great phenomenon of recent times that some people
equate it to "all-knowing, all-seeing, everywhere at once'' deity (
http://www.thechurchofgoogle.org/ ).
Though ascribing Google the status of God may be a highly far-fetched idea, its
potential in solving our problems is indisputable.

As noted earlier, besides the search service, Google features several on-line
applications such as Google news, Google video, and so on. The Google News
Archives (http://news.google.com/archivesearch), a recent addition to Google
service pack, is gaining much attention from news analysts and researchers.
The service helps you dig out several-years-old news stories from news sources
such as BBC news, Time magazine and the like.

If you find any difficulty in remembering the multitude of Google
services/search operators, services like Gseek (
http://www.gseek.com/ ),
created for helping you access various Google tools from a single interface may
come in handy.

In this Net-ridden World, having appropriate searching skills (especially on a
popular service like Google) is increasingly becoming essential. Though Google
wields enormous popularity and almost all netizens use it daily, only a very
few can use it efficiently. Some people take hours to spot a resource that
can be unearthed in a couple of minutes (if right Google commands are used).
This aspect of Google has already been featured in this column (
http://www.hindu.com/biz/2004/08/23/stories/2004082300341500.
htm).

Google games

To equip its users with necessary skills/tools, Google itself features many
tutorials and other information products. The Google Librarian Centre (
http://www.google.com/librariancenter/index.html ),
meant for helping Librarians exploit the Google services effectively, is one
such tool worth exploring. Here, you can subscribe to the Google Librarian
Newsletter that regularly updates on Google related tips/information.

Likewise, Google Webmasters Central (
http://www.google.com/webmasters/ )
is yet another resource worth a look (especially if you make web sites). Also,
reading Google related blogs such as Webmaster Central
(http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/)
could improve your Googling skills.

Now, to test your Google proficiency many services are available. These
services (also known as Google games) are generally based on the reverse search
concept, where you have to guess the key-word(s) for a given Google search
output. One such game, which has gained much popularity of late, is Gwigle
(http://gwigle.varten.net/).
In this multi-level game, with each level, you will be presented with a Google
'results' page and you have to guess the search string by scrutinising it.
By and large, the game is enjoyable and worth a shot for testing your Google
skills, though some of the levels require extra skills (like maths). The game
'What did I search For' (
http://www.gamesforthebrain.
com/game/whatsearch/) is yet another one of this kind. For a comprehensive list
of a variety of Google based games, check out: http://blog.outer-court .com/
archive/2006-08-13-n15. html.

Another Google related resource worth a visit is the freely downloadable book
'55 ways to have fun with Google' (
http://www.55fun.com/ ).
The book features different Google services, several tips/tricks and numerous
Google based games.

This information packed book can either be downloaded from the site or read
on-line at:
http://www.googlified.com/55

In this context, you may also check out the fascinating development-statistics
visualisation tool Google Gapminder (http://tools.google.com/gapminder/).
For analysts/economists development indicators (like life expectancy, economic
growth and child mortality) are valuable sets of information.

Combining different indicators on a graph and viewing the changes in them over
time, for different countries, provides typical insights on the differential
development process. Gapminder, the application developed for showing the
development indicators (from World Bank) for all countries worldwide in a
scatter
plot, may come in handy for such purposes. Each bubble in the graph represents
a country and the bubble's size represents the size of its population. The
scatter plot comes with the default indicators on income and life expectancy.

By clicking on the name of an indicator you can choose another one from the
menu that pops up. Using the time slider you can view the change over time.
For further details of this application, go through the
tutorial:http://tools.google. com/

gapminder/howto.html.

If you have a dedicated volunteer group, I think this shouldn't be a
problem. I often assumed that such groups are very active in Mumbai.

When we were in our colleges ten years ago (in Chennai) we had a group
of educated house wives who used to receive the schedule of exams in
advance from the student services department of our college and used to
make sure all the scribes are present on the appointed date. I feel
folks in Mumbai can ask NAB or other organisations to initiate formation
of such a voluntary group.

Samir,
1. I have been checking with other colleges about a writer for your
friend but it is going to be difficult because they too have exams
starting next week.
2. Schools also have exams during the same time.
3. The only possible solution is that she tries to get a writer from a
totally different faculty like engineering because they dont have exams
during those dates. She will have to convince the college to waive the
condition of the writer being from a batch younger than her. If they
dont agree then it is going to be very difficult for her.
4. She may have to convince the college to let one of the teachers or
the librarian write her papers. It has been done as suggested by the
group members.
4. Please ask her to handle the situation diplomatically as the college
is right and she has to convince them to waive the rules. This is not
difficult as the currrent examsa are internal exams and the Principal
can be convinced about the hardship and her discretionary powers can be
appealed to.
5. If the college does not have a problem about the age and allows some
person who does not have a literature background to be the
writer and you dont find someone then please call me immediately. There
are about 100 odd visually impaired students giving undergraduate exams
in the next 2 weeks in Mumbai-therefore the dearth of volunteers.
6. Lastly I'd like you to tell your friend that she should avoid such a
sittuation in the future. Learn computers thoroughly, increase her
typing speed, carry a copy of the UGC circular which was issued after
anjali's case and insist that she be allowed to answer her exams on the
computer. she will have to work on this as soon as these exams are over.

Let me know what happens tomorrow with the Principal.

Re: [AI] Writer

2006-09-24 Thread Taraprakash
I myself was in such a soup once at JNU.
A prof volunteered to write for me. It is not easy to use your teacher as a
scribe but in such situations may be one can try.
Later on my dept allowed me the use of a computer to write my exam.
I know things are not as relaxed everywhere as at JNU but keep trying is the
only solution.
All the best to your friend
Hope something positive happens

[AI] Writer

2006-09-24 Thread pamnani
Samir,
1. I have been checking with other colleges about a writer for your friend but
it is going to be difficult because they too have exams starting next week.
2. Schools also have exams during the same time.
3. The only possible solution is that she tries to get a writer from a totally
different faculty like engineering because they dont have exams during those
dates. She will have to convince the college to waive the condition of the
writer being from a batch younger than her. If they dont agree then it is going
to be very difficult for her.
4. She may have to convince the college to let one of the teachers or the
librarian write her papers. It has been done as suggested by the group members.
4. Please ask her to handle the situation diplomatically as the college is
right and she has to convince them to waive the rules. This is not difficult as
the currrent examsa are internal exams and the Principal can be convinced about
the hardship and her discretionary powers can be appealed to.
5. If the college does not have a problem about the age and allows some person
who does not have a literature background to be the writer and you dont
find someone then please call me immediately. There are about 100 odd visually
impaired students giving undergraduate exams in the next 2 weeks in
Mumbai-therefore the dearth of volunteers.
6. Lastly I'd like you to tell your friend that she should avoid such a
sittuation in the future. Learn computers thoroughly, increase her typing
speed, carry a copy of the UGC circular which was issued after anjali's case
and insist that she be allowed to answer her exams on the computer. she will
have to work on this as soon as these exams are over.

Let me know what happens tomorrow with the Principal.

Re: [AI] booking rly tickets on line

2006-09-24 Thread Aruni Sharma
As far as making provisions for internet booking for various categories
of concessions is concerned, there will be no problem. It may be noted
that the senior citizens are allowed to book concessional tickets
through internet. The condition is that they carry a valid certificate
of the age proof. The same yardstick can be applied to the visually
impaired also. It can be made easier if the railways themselves issue
concession certificates. This will bring additional benifits as we
often face problems at the booking counters with officials raising
objections on one or the other pretext.
Another solution can be that the railways can return the exta fair
charged after varifying the concession documents. One can book the
ticket at normal rates and get the extra money back later. It is
actually we who require this facility the most as it can save us the
hassles of traveling and getting the forms filled up. It is for the
railways to find out some solution and nothing is impossible in this world.

regards,
Aruni.

[AI] DTH services

2006-09-24 Thread Harish
Hi Subramani
The radio channels are all free, so there is no activation or subscription
required.

Austrlian Broadcasting corporation is running 2 channels here. Besides,
There is also a channel from Punjab radio from London.

Dth in fact is a very well designed platform. Potentially it has capability
to render in described audio. For instance, Pogo; childrens tv channel is
available in many language , English, Hindi, Telugu etc. You can select the
language in their main-menu, sub title language. In the area of
accessibility if one desires one can have say Hindi-described. In that case
if there is any described portion it can be available on that selection,
similarly it could be possible to render close captioning.
This will happen if we are able to influence in the right quarters.

Potential is one thing and making a reality of it is a different game.
Harish.

Re: [AI] booking rly tickets on line

2006-09-24 Thread Sanjay Prasad
We are not the only people availing concessions there are Freedom
fighters, Senior citizens, Students and so on. The rates also vary
from category to category of beneficiaries. They also have different
proformas of Concession certificates.
Therefore at present, it is not feasible for Indian Railways to do
that. Unless the railways have a reliable database of all the people
who avail concessions which I believe is not possible in the
foreseeable future, we cannot expect online reservation with
concessional rates.
Thank you all,

[AI] Airlines react to more flaming laptops

2006-09-24 Thread Shadab Husain
Airlines react to more flaming laptops

Anand Parthasarathy

Blogging sites post news and pictures of portable PC batteries on fire

TOO HOT TO HANDLE: The charred remains of a laptop that caught fire in
Yahoo's U.S. office on Wednesday. (Right) A burnt-out IBM laptop in the
departure

area of Los Angeles International Airport last week.

Bangalore: The Hindu 's report on August 17 suggested that the ``Laptop
recall may affect makers other than Dell too.'' Sadly, that has happened all
too

soon.

Many blogging sites on the Web were ablaze last week with news and pictures
of two other dramatic incidents, where laptop batteries caught fire, causing

a building to be evacuated and alarms to go off in an international airport
departure area. On Wednesday, another Dell laptop PC caught fire in the 8th

floor Santa Clara-based offices of Internet portal Yahoo, causing the fire
brigade to be called and the entire office building evacuated. The owner had

apparently not sent the battery for exchange after Dell first took note of
the problem in August. The laptop was brought out and a bystander, Kevin
Collins,

posted a photo of the charred machine on the photo-sharing website,
flickr.com.

William Shatner, happened to be in Los Angeles International Airport last
weekend, when a fellow passenger about to board an United Airlines flight to
London,

came rushing back and flung to the floor his too-hot-to-handle laptop - an
IBM/Lenovo ThinPad. In seconds, it burst into flames like a firecracker and

left a deep burn patch on the floor. Mr. Shatner snapped photos with his
camera-phone and posted two of them on the SomethingAwful blogging site,
with

a first person account of the incident. Both laptops use the Sony
Lithium-ion batteries that have now been recognised as the problem. Since
Dell first

recalled over a million of these batteries in August, Apple has followed
suit and this week Toshiba has recalled some 340,000 of the batteries - also
made

by Sony - that go into its laptops.

Lenovo, which now owns the IBM notebook brand, has so far not recalled its
batteries, but may be forced to act now.

In another ironical development, bloggers are gleefully recalling Apple's
1998 advertisement campaign called `toasted bunny' which showed a fireman
putting

out an Intel chip plant worker in his `bunny suit,' which was on fire... a
supposedly funny comment on the amount of power Intel chips consumed. Today,

Apple has shifted to the Intel range of processors, ditching the ``Power
PC'' series of chips it had always sworn by.

At least three airlines - Virgin Atlantic, Qantas and Korean Air - have
begun asking their passengers to remove the batteries from their Dell and
Apple

notebooks before taking the flight. This means only passengers in the upper
classes where an onboard supply is provided can use their laptops while they

fly. They and other airlines are expected to enlarge the ban to all laptops
- in view of this week's incendiary episodes. Planning to fly? Don't count

on doing too much work on your laptop in the coming days. Carry a good book
instead.

Have a nice day

Hi friends,

Since a few days my XP machine suddenly crashes and a blue screen with a code

the machine using the reset button on the CPU. When I enquired from a couple of
people they referred to it as "blue screen of death"

Can any one thro some light on the issue? how can I get rid of this problem?

Looking forward for your response.

2006-09-24 Thread Aruni Sharma
Hi dinesh, I tried writely today with a reasonable amount of success.
After giving the title and clicking the next button, I saw many links
for formating the document. What I did was to manually press Jaws+z in
order to switch off the vertual pc cursor. I was then able to enter text
and save the document by hitting on done link. I then opened the
document and was able to read it. By clicking on the change link the
document was ready for editing by following the same proceedure.

Re: [AI] diabetes

2006-09-24 Thread Subramani L
I do understand the usefulness of info on Diabetes. As someone who write
on health, I do know for example that all Indians will have to have a
close watch because India will become the Diabetes capital of the world
in 2025 with more than 55 percent of the population suffering from type
2 form of the disease.

Also, Diabetes Retinopathy causes blindness to several diabetics and
this has been increasing with the numbers of type 2 diabetes cases.
However, it's very sad that there aren't much writings on how Type 2
diabetes can affect the VI population. That will be certainly a good
info.

Hi Subramani
Radio channels are all free. There are a good deal of free TV channels
as
well.

You can of course subscribe for the paid channel.

Currently about 24 Radio channels are available on this platform.

Competition on this space has just started, with Tata Sky marketting
agressively We should be getting better deals in the future.

Re: [AI] diabetes

2006-09-24 Thread vijeta
The Diagnosis of Diabetes

Although the diagnosis of diabetes may be anticipated when classical
symptoms and signs are present; weight loss, fatigue, a history of
polydipsia (excessive
thirst) and polyuria (excessive urinating), the diagnosis should not rely
only on the presence of glycosuria (sugar in the urine). The diagnosis must
be
confirmed by demonstrating the presence of fasting hyperglycaemia (raised
blood sugar) and following an oral glucose tolerance test.2

Diabetic Retinopathy and Blindness

Twenty years after the onset of diabetes nearly all patients with type I
diabetes (insulin-dependent) and more than 60% of those with type II
diabetes (non
insulin-dependent) will have retinopathy.3 Diabetic retinopathy is the
leading cause of blindness amongst people of working age in industrialised
countries.4
It is estimated that there are 20 million diabetics in the Middle East (WHO
Eastern Mediterranean Region), of which 800,000 will require treatment for
retinopathy, and 116,000 new patients will present for treatment each year.5
In Singapore, 8.6% of the population between 15 and 69 years is diabetic,
that is, 165,000 diabetics and at least 16,500 of these will have
retinopathy.6

Ricky Sharma writes in this issue of his experience at Aravind Eye Hospital,
South India. In a six month period, 1,863 new eye patients had a diagnosis
(either previously known or unknown) of diabetes mellitus. Of these, 684
(37%) were found to have diabetic retinopathy. Further, 987 (53%) had either
immature
or mature cataracts and so some retinopathy will have been obscured.

Thylefors, Negrel, Pararajasegaram and Dadzie, in their analysis of the WHO
Global Data Bank on Blindness, said that the survey data on diabetic
retinopathy
as a cause of blindness is too limited to reach an accurate figure.7
However, it does seem likely that blinding diabetic eye disease is now the
fourth
major cause of blindness worldwide, after cataract, the glaucomas and
trachoma.

Philip Hykin, in his review article, describes the clinical features and
management of diabetic retinopathy. The new descriptive terms used by the
Early
Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) should be understood by us

Screening and Treatment

Lyn Jenkins and Valerie Mayon-White address the difficult question of
screening for diabetic retinopathy. Although the 'ideal screening method
does not
exist' and many in developing countries will not have available
sophisticated equipment for screening, all eye care workers should be aware
if diabetes
is a public health problem in their region and make sure that diabetic
patients have regular, dilated view ophthalmoscopy

Old Descriptive Term
New Term (ETDRS)

Background

Mild Non-Proliferative
Moderate Non-Proliferative

Pre-Proliferative

Severe Non-Proliferative
Very Severe Non-Proliferative

Proliferative

Proliferative (the same)

Maculopathy ('Diffuse'; 'Exudative'; 'Ischaemic')

Maculopathy (focal laser therapy based on whether 'Clinically Significant
Macular Oedema')

It is understood that adding retinal photography to direct or indirect
ophthalmoscopy greatly improves sensitivity and specificity (
) in identifying diabetic retinopathy.5,7,8 However, Yeo, Lim and colleagues
rightly point out that 'primary health care and other practitioners should
... be encouraged to attempt direct ophthalmoscopy ... and refer diabetics
for further examination if the fundal state cannot be adequately assessed by
them.'6

Early treatment using laser photocoagulation has been shown to reduce
blindness due to diabetic retinopathy by at least 60% and the figure will
improve
further as patients at risk are identified early:3 the earlier the better.

Recognition of the increasing problem of diabetes mellitus and its danger to
sight, training in ophthalmoscopy (and other diagnostic methods, if
possible),
early identification of the stages of retinopathy in patients at risk and
referral for expert opinion and treatment, will prevent blindness for many
individuals
