Hi jignesh, I think it is always easy to escape from the situation, but it is not proper solution. You should continue study. There is problem every where, such as banks asks for billow 60 percentage scribes, some universities ask for stupid conditions, than it is possible to stay at home? The environment in India is not supportive for the blind it does not mean that we don’t do anything. I strongly believe that there are thousands of organizations working for the blind should try with full heartedly, there are some institute like eyeway wich are helping blind. You should concern this kind of organization for solution. In our group there are lots of genuinely intelligent people who will surely help you. [AI] free chess prog.
Subject: Free advanced Chess program for Windows - WinBoard 4.4 for JAWS Hello Friends, I'd like to introduce a free advanced Chess software program for Windows for the totally blind and persons needing audio announcements and /or full keyboard access. It is called Winboard 4.4 for JAWS. It uses any Windows version of the JAWS screen reader to announce the chess moves and other selected content to the player. Winboard is used world wide and represent the state of the art in free Chess software. Winboard 4.4 for JAWS functions to play chess on the internet at ICS servers (Internet Chess Servers), namely the Free Internet Chess Server more commonly known as FICS, and also provides Chess position analysis through adaptable, Grand Master strength, free and commercial Chess Engine programs. In addition you can saves and review games in the popular PGN format file. Until now no advanced, ICS compatible Chess software was available to the blind and sight impaired or handicapped in any form. This is solely a volunteer, non-profit effort undertaken by myself and H.G. Muller, the chief programmer. A version of this program called Winboard for JAWS was released in 1999 at Freedom Scientific under the GNU Public License but functioned poorly and could not connect to the ICS servers at all. This repaired version is updated with the latest WinBoard code and is a significant advancement over regular WinBoard with new functionality added by the programmer H.G. Muller. I asked him to repair WinBoard for JAWS after I had become friends with a blind player at FICS and saw his Telnet access to the server was sub-optimal. Further he had no access to Chess engine analysis. Please spread the word to the blind and handicapped. This software is ad-ware and mal-ware free and absolutely safe and non-invasive. Please see details and free download at the WinBoard Forum here: http://www.open-aurec.com/wbforum/viewtopic.php?f=19t=50387start=1 http://www.open-aurec.com/wbforum/viewtopic.php?f=19t=50387start=1 Sincer To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Respected members: Good morning to all of you. In one of my previous mails I have mentioned about my transfer problem. As you know, I’m working as a teacher in a government primary school. Recently I was transferred to a school, which is 45 kilometers from my residence. Unfortunately there is no direct bus to that place. My previous school was just nine kilometers from my residence and still one vacancy is there. Some of our members suggested me to take this problem to my higher authorities. So friends, I want your valuable suggestions to my following queries. 1. Are there any circlers, which support my case? So that I can submit these to my higher officials. 2. I think in session 33 in PWD act, I found the following point. “Creation of a non-handicapping environment in places where persons with disabilities are employed”. Re: [AI] oops... one more query on Sendspace
That is not my problem. Let me explain --when you go down the dialogue box that asks you select the file, you keep pressing the tab when you read, file name, files of type, open, close etc. Then comes 'look in:'. Here you go down from My Computer to Local Disk and then point at the folder from where you need to upload the folder of your choice (for example McBeth.zip). Here is where I have the problem. When you press further tabs and hit enter on McBeth.zip, it gets displayed in the Look In box and underneath, when you press tabs, you see files inside McBeth.zip which you want to upload as a whole. I understand that it may be possible to individually upload the files inside the big folder, but that would be a waste of time. So how do you upload the folder as a whole. Hope I am clear. Re: [AI] oops... one more query on Sendspace
Hi Subramani sir Please follow the following steps and report the result. In the look in dialog box, press alt+i to go to look in and select the folder which contains the file or folder which needs to be uploaded. Select it but don't press enter on it. Now tab thrice to go to folder view list view. Select the zipped folder which needs to be uploaded and press alt+o to confirm your selection. Now the look in dialog box disappears and you can upload. Note: By selecting, I mean, when Jaws announces something in a list, it is taken for granted to be selected. -- G. Now my doubt is can this point is applicable to my case? As my work place is very far from my residence. Please give me your valuable suggestions in this regard. Re: [AI] audio book review:
Dear list members: Based on Prashant's review, I tried to speak to some of the manifacturers and this is what they have to say. Dear Govind Thanks for your feedback to Anna on the Audio Book Reader created by 'SAKSHAM' (I have received the forwarded copy). As regards your opinion about the selected wave format I (as one of the inventors) would like to clarify that the wave file format with lower attribute has been deliberately selected with an aim to accomodate large number of tracks on the MMC. That is why it was possible that about 60 hours duration data is available on a 2 GB MMC. You are not wrong when you say that MP3 is a dominant format now a days but when you go for designing a new audio player the copywrite issue for MP3 comes in the way. (one can create as many files in MP3 without need to seek authentication but if one undertakes designing an MP3 player one has to seek authentic license from MPEG) Secondly though being a compressed format the audio duration may not be available to extent of the capacity mentioned. We have attempted to design The ABR as an exclusive tool for visually challenged to undertake their study with more ease. You have also mentioned that 'The keys do not have a voice promt attached to them, they just give a beep'. I think perhaps the demo might have missed some details (sorry for that) but in fact the embossed buttons are defenitely supported by voice prompt that is amongst the special features of the device. Lastly I would like to say that how far we should depend upon foreign countries for solutions suited to people in our country. I call upon intellegent people like you to come forward and inspire and encourage our technical experts in India and abroad to use their resources to comfort the life of visually challenged in our country. The DAISY format though convenient to have access to a pinpoint portion you may agree that the large number of visually challenged in our country are deprived of Daisy Players or Computers to play the books due to non affordable cost individually. At least ABR is affordable to the sponsorers. By the way I would like to inform you that we are already on job to produce a model with recording facility and random access to the tracks. With best wishes waiting for your response and suggestions. To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Hi Renuca, Yes it indeed happens with the new site. That's why I am still using the old site. But here is something that you can try it out. Keep the original page hntact and open the news item in a new browser window. Simply return to the original page after you finish reading that item by pressing control+w and you will be possisioned on the visited link. It certainly works with ie 7, but try to see if it works with mosilla as well. Does anybody face such problem? Is there any solution for it? I am using the mossila firefox 3.526 as my web browser. Renuka. Re: [AI] a problem in reading the hindu news paper
Hi: The Backspace is working in Hindu’s beta website very well with IE 8. but the advantage with old website is that, we need not to press Backspace every time after reading the news item, instead after reading a news item, just press L to go to list of headlines in the page. After reading a news item, you can also press Shift + V to go to the headline link of the present news article. Just press down arrow to move to the next headline link. Re: [AI] oops... one more query on Sendspace
well, if you use the sendspace wizard, it is more easy to upload and to browse your remote files and copy links and a lot of stuff. well, when you start using it, you'll learn a lot more. well for uploading and stuff I do in the night, as per my plan of BSNL. well, I learnt it and I love it. its quite simple, from my point of view, as you learn it. well, I understand the topic has been a bit widened but it is quite usefull, since it is very accessible, and is friendly to the blind. Re: [AI] audio book review:
I don't know if there is any point for me to write about this as there wouldn't be anyone from that organization. But I think there is not enough clarity about daisy. Daisy is not a solution provided by some foreign company, it is a standard agreed by various international organizations working for persons with blindness. Some of the Indian organizations are also involved. Since it is a standard, no one makes money when daisy is adopted. And the benefits are huge, a book produced anywhere in the world can be read in any other part of the world, using a standard daisy player. Given the above facts, Following logic is really perverse. snip Lastly I would like to say that how far we should depend upon foreign countries for solutions suited to people in our country. /snip Considering daisy a foreign solution is really foolish idea. In modern time, many things are developed in collaboration, for example There are lots of people working on daisy solutions in India as well. The above logic seems to be a bad argument forwarded to promote a bad solution. IF this logic is true, then using computer is bad as it was developed in U.S.A and one should not do programming as mostly was developed there as well. Even wav is not an indian standard? And for that matter is English Indian language? It seems that the organization does not understand the book production or blindness issues in general. -Original Message- From: accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of govind reddy Sent: 09 September 2009 09:30 PM To: accessindia Subject: Re: [AI] audio book review: Dear list members: Based on Prashant's review, I tried to speak to some of the manifacturers and this is what they have to say. [AI] Disabled given raw deal
Railways have asked disabled booth operators to cough up last 7 years' rent or shut shop Sambhaji Gurav, owner of a phone booth at Dadar, and Baban Rajpoot (in the background) owner of a booth at Grant Road have been forced to close down Forty disabled telephone booth operators at various railway stations in Mumbai have received notice from the Railways to vacate the premises if they can't pay up last seven years' average rent. This amounts to anything between Rs 1 lakh to 4.5 lakh. On Tuesday, harassed booth owners wrote a letter to Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee, threatening to immolate themselves. Sambhaji Gurav, 54, who owned a phone booth at Dadar's (Central Railway) platform no 6, has already been forced to close down his shop. When we were allotted the stalls, we were not expected to pay any rent. But in 2000, the Indian Railways introduced a policy for all stall owners making it mandatory to pay rent. We staged protests in Delhi and the policy was stayed. However, in March 2007, the booth owners started receiving bills for their stalls calculated from 2002. Baban Rajaput, a booth owner from Grant Road station, said, We were not aware that the policy was re-introduced since 2002. I suddenly received a bill of Rs 1.55 lakh in 2007, which I can never afford to pay. His plight is shared by Bhagwan Savlani, who owns a stall at Bandra. My wife, mother and 10-year-old son are dependent on me. I don't have any other means of livelihood. I can never pay the rent of Rs 5,000 per month. If forced to vacate, I will have no option but to kill myself, he said. Local officials said they cannot intervene as it is a policy decision by the Railway Board. Since some stall owners have already paid, the rest cannot be treated differently, a railway official from Mumbai said. Phone booth story In 1981, the Indian Railways had allotted 175 telephone booths to disabled persons on many Mumbai railway stations for free, as per the United Nations declaration of 'International Year of Disabled Persons'. But with the mobile phone boom, the booth owners steadily kept losing business till just a small fraction survived.
