The Hindu : Today's Paper / NATIONAL : Indian professor devises method to use cellphone for eye tests BOSTON, June 26, 2010 tests A team led by an Indian-origin professor has devised a method of using mobile phones for conducting eye tests, a technique it hopes will be useful in places lacking hi-tech eye equipment. The device NETRA (Near-Eye Tool for Refractive Assessment), has been designed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab Associate Professor Ramesh Raskar, visiting Professor Manuel Oliveira, student Vitor Pamplona and post-doctoral research associate Ankit Mohan. The two-minute eye test can be carried out using a small plastic device clipped in front of a cellphone's screen. The patient looks into a small lens, presses the phone's arrow keys until sets of parallel green and red lines just overlap. The process is repeated eight times with the lines at different angles for each eye. The process takes less than two minutes, after which software loaded in the phone provides prescription data. Our device has the potential to make routine refractive eye exams simpler and cheaper, and, therefore, more accessible to millions of people in developing countries, Professor Oliveira said in a statement. The technology takes advantage of huge improvements in the resolution of digital displays and their widespread proliferation in cellphones. Apart from the software to run on the phone, all that is needed is the snap-on plastic device, which, Professor Mohan says, can be produced at a cost of about $1 to $2, but cost a few cents more in large quantities. The team is preparing to conduct clinical trials, preliminary testing with about 20 people and objective tests using camera lenses have shown that it can achieve results comparable to the standard aberrometer test, which shines a laser into the eye and uses an array of tiny lenses to measure its characteristics. The group plans to launch production of the device, initially targeting parts of Africa and Asia. It also hopes to produce an advanced version that will be able to detect other conditions, such as cataract, which could be sold in the developed world as well. NETRA is a quicker, simpler and cheaper way to test eye sight, said the team, which has already applied for a patent. According to the World Health Organisation, uncorrected refractive errors are the world's second-highest cause of blindness, affecting about two per cent of the world's population. A simple Google search could have revealed that the sms is a hoax one and don't fall for it. I request all of my AI members that do keep yourself updated with Tech newsand happenings as these spam messages are quite frequent and usually it's covered in the news how people fall for it. It's very important that we stay vigilant and question the legality and authenticity of any such messages before jumping upon any action. Why will someone will give you a prize for nothing and there are no free lunches Also, apart from these spam messages, there are a lot ofadvertisements on various sites about free virus scan or Download free antivirus scanner today. Before installing these applications, do a google search about their authenticity, also, instead of randomly installing any antivirus, stick with the top 10 out of which AVG, Avast and Avira are the top three which offer free protection against all types of malware. All kurzweil functions can be accessed through its menus in the absence of the numpad options. Hi Friends, Need your expert advice and opinions on the following point: There are a host of people who may have a disability which is say less than 40% and as per the law, they are not eligible for the reservations in the government jobs and educational instate. Now, some of them are able to get a medical certificate which is either equal to 40% OR MORE AND ARE ABLE TO ENJOY RESERVATION BENEFIT. In the process, many candidates with more severe disability miss out as they are not able to compete with them. In such a scenario, what should be the appropriate action if a person is found guilty especially in the case of milder disability which is less than 40% but has got a certificate of say more than 40% for to secure a job. Should the seat allocated to them for the job or in education institute be withdrawn. Are there any precedence to the same? Also, is the percentage model to determine the disability extent is feasible or there are any alternative in different country. Here, I am not focusing on increasing the reservation percent as a solution as this will remain as a problem in either 3% or 10%. Will look forward to your comment, opinion, reactions on the above. While composing the email, no need of writing 'AI' into brackets because as soon as you send the email and whenever it is sent it automatically puts 'AI' in brackets. Told you for reducing your load. 2. Please put a decent subject for every message. Like in this mail, subject could be 'vinux', or 'vinux users please respond'. The lines like hi how are you etc are never ment for subject lines. These lines are always written in the message body. Subject conveys as to what is this specific mail all about. If you put a subject line which is relevant, then others will appreciate you. Now coming to vinux, before installing it on to your PC actually I would recommend you to please try it out from live cd. visit: www.vinux.org.uk Download the cd image and then burn it on to the cd. Then boot from the cd. After one or two minutes, you are good to go with automatically enabled orka.
