Hi friends, In continuation with my earlier e-mail, I would like to know whether IGNOU is still offering BCA and MCA for the visually challenged? The problem is that Rules of this kind are never publicly pronounced, for they are meant only for internal circulation to the evaluators concerned. Some years ago, the UGC Chairman has revealed in a conference during a question-answer session that UGC indeed ensures that the scripts of the visually-challenged candidates are evaluated without paying too much attention to minor spelling errors and grammatical mistakes. Now that UGC has given up the descriptive questions, I am not sure if UGC even remembers it! Andhra Pradesh Board of Secondary school Certificate has a peculiar system of giving 10 grace marks in each subject, and 15 in the case of Maths, at the time of 10th standard public examination. I have never came across of such mandate upon the evaluator or the university officials, even they don't indicate that this answerbook belongs to a visually challanged candidate! Perhaps they don't do so because making any sign or representation which could help in identifying you amongst others students is not permitted. However at school level or in internal examinations if the teacher knows you personally, he can make such relaxations on the basis of equity. don't worry. in most of time Evaluater cann give marks if you made any spelling mistakes also. But you have to put green sticker on your answer sheet paper. [AI] Attending a conference
Hi all, I hope this message finds you well. I'm actually planning to attend a law-related conference which will be conducted by the Alexis Foundation in Dharwad, Karnataka in August. I don't know how I'll be able to manage independently in a completely new environment. I generally have someone with me whenever I go to a new place, but this will be different. So, what are the things that I should discuss with the organisers before attending the conference? What are the main challenges that I may have to face during the conference? Any tips/suggestions would be immensely appreciated. Re: [AI] Cell format for phone numbers
Hello Amiyo, It's not a question of text format. In our country there are 3, 4, digits std codes and 6, 7, 8 digits local numbers. Here is the problem occurs because if I use a format for one it gives wrongs for another; I can't use these 3 formats in a single cell. Perhaps it requires suppose if conditional format which I don't know. Ok! thank you for response. Re: [AI] Attending a conference
Hi Rahul, You tell the organizers nothing. I have done this before. You walk in with your cane and laptop and ask the people at the reception to escort you in. They usually get the message and do track you after that assuming you come into visual range. The rest of it is up to you. Logistics at conferences are challenging but you can attend them solo. Do maintain situational awareness and track where you are in relation to the exit at all times. If you need to leave in a hurry, start walking towards the exit and someone will help. do not count on dedicated assistance though. Re: [AI] Has anyone tried open source screen reader?
Hi Nidhi, The accent of sscreen reader output is synthesizer dependent and not screen reader dependent. A screen reader sends data to a synthesizer which sends that data after processing to a speech-output device such as a soundcard or a dedicated synthesizer. We want to make this widely accessible. Instead of charging a fee for the series, we are providing it free to everyone. In this series, you have the opportunity to hear from nationally recognized professionals who are pioneers in making STEM disciplines accessible to people with disciplines. Even if you are not interested in Stem topics, you need to be familiar with what is happening so you can enlighten faculty and encourage students. I am not a scientist although as an adult I have a growing interest in it. My reason for organizing this series is that STEM content provides some of the toughest accessibility hurddles. I have watched dedicated leaders struggle to transcend the problems. Now, real progress is happening, and at the same time authors can provide accessible content with better and easier tools than ever. Week 1: June 4. Re: [AI] Has anyone used open source screen reader?
Hi Nidhi, If things have not changed subsequent to Ubuntu 10.4, then the tts used by Orca is ESpeak. Which itself is an open-source synthesizer. Similar TTS is used by NVDA on Windows. In general, users do say that the voice of ESpeak is more synthetic, but if the user is completely new, and has not got hang of Eloquence, then certainly starting with Orca will not be an issue. Previously, there were issues in Orca's voice being thrown out, as there were cuts while speech was produced, but I guess it is getting better day by day. The advantage of using ESpeak over others is that it supports Indian regional languages too. You could also consider using Vinux, which is especially designed operating system (based on Ubuntu) for visually impaired, providing more accessible environment. Do let me know if you want feedback on any specific issue. Regards, -- Amar Jain. We recently did a training at 3 blind schools for Orca and consistently, the students said that Orca is easier to understand bcs it has an Indian accent. But I would like an opinion from this group too. If you have used, please do share your feedback. It will help us very much. If you have access to a tactile graphics embosser, then you can print any map you want once suitable preprocessing has been done. The Royal National Institute of the blind in the UK has world maps. They do have an export department and would be worth contacting.
