[AI] Aircel Facebook Recharge

2013-05-30 Thread David Richards
Dear all Access Indians, Aircel has introduced first-of-its-kind Recharge Store
on Facebook. The recharge app on Facebook lets Aircel pre-paid customers
recharge their Aircel numbers on Facebook fan page easily in just 4 steps.
First, you have to enter your Aircel pre-paid number, choose the
product/recharge amount, enter credit/debit card details, then proceed to
recharge. Those of you who are Aircel subscribers can try it out on Facebook.
Warm regards

conference during a question-answer session that UGC indeed ensures that
 the
scripts of the visually-challenged candidates are evaluated without paying
too much attention to minor spelling errors and grammatical mistakes. Now
that UGC has given up the descriptive questions, I am not sure if UGC even
 remembers it!
Andhra Pradesh Board of Secondary school Certificate has a peculiar system
of giving 10 grace marks in each subject, and 15 in the case of Maths, at
the time of 10th standard public examination. But this can be a

So far as my wisdom bethinks, there is no such rule/guideline of any
university/UGC which provides any kind of relaxation or special treatment
 in
respect of visually challanged candidates while evaluating their answer
sheets. I have never came across of such mandate upon the evaluator or the
university officials, even they don't indicate that this answerbook belongs
to a visually challanged candidate! Perhaps they don't do so because making
any sign or representation which could help in identifying you amongst
others students is not permitted. However at school level or in internal
examinations if the teacher knows you personally, he can make such
relaxations on the basis of equity.

Visit the Directorate of Income Tax (DIT) website at
https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/ for filing income tax returns
free of cost. Navigate to the button that reads Learn How To e-File
and activate it to read instructions on how to file IT returns.

I filed my returns last year through this portal and it was easily
done. Note that the the ITR form once generated needs to be
downloaded, printed and sent to the specified Bangaluru address via
post (no courier/speed post). The acknowledgement is sent on email
after they receive the printed form.

[AI] Attending a conference

2013-05-30 Thread Rahul Bajaj
Hi all,

I hope this message finds you well.
I'm actually planning to attend a law-related conference which will
be conducted by the Alexis Foundation in Dharwad, Karnataka in
August.
I don't know how I'll be able to manage independently in a completely
new environment. I generally have someone with me whenever I go to a
new place, but this will be different.
So, what are the things that I should discuss with the organisers
before attending the conference? What are the main challenges that I
may have to face during the conference?
Any tips/suggestions would be immensely appreciated.

Best,
Rahul

 Subject: [AI] Attending a conference

 Best,
 Rahul

Re: [AI] Cell format for phone numbers

2013-05-30 Thread Mukesh

Hello Amiyo,
It's not a question of text format. In our country there are 3, 4, digits
std codes and 6, 7, 8 digits local numbers. Here is the problem occurs
because if I use a format for one it gives wrongs for another; I can't use
these 3 formats in a single cell. Perhaps it requires suppose if conditional
format which I don't know.

Ok! thank you for response.

I apply text format from the format cells dialogue box or put an

Hi Jyoti,

I have recently heard of a NGO called Esha that can create maps. If you have
access to a tactile graphics embosser, then you can print any map you want
once suitable preprocessing has been done.

The Royal National Institute of the blind in the UK has world maps. They do
have an export department and would be worth contacting.

 hello,
there might be several reasons for it. so first please check the
startup programs. if there are too many programs starting on logon,
then these might be requiring you to connect to the internet and upon
connecting to the internet, these might be busy searching their
 servers.

please do also check pending notifications in the system tray if
asking you to update any program.

since you are using windows 7 on your laptop, you may find the option
solve number of items on your pc.

please do also check the remaining size of your primary hard drive as
if its on the verge of occupying maximum space and if little is
balance, then program may start responding slow.

you may also try to use the option of repair jaws if its the issue
 with only jaws.

please note that these are my personal observations which i have faced
it myself and rectifying them solved my similar problem earlier.

so you may try it out if it works for you.

[AI] Has anyone tried open source screenreader?

2013-05-30 Thread Esha - People for the Blind
Hi all

Has anyone tried an open source screenreader called Orca? What has been your
experience?

We recently did a training at 3 blind schools for Orca and consistently, the
students said that Orca is easier to understand bcs it has an Indian accent.
But I would like an opinion from this group too. If you have used, please do
share your feedback. It will help us very much.

Thank you

Re: [AI] Attending a conference

2013-05-30 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi Rahul,

You tell the organizers nothing. I have done this before.
You walk in with your cane and laptop and ask the people at the reception to
escort you in. They usually get the message and do track you after that
assuming you come into visual range.

The rest of it is up to you.

Logistics at conferences are challenging but you can attend them solo. Do
maintain situational awareness and track where you are in relation to the
exit at all times.

If you need to leave in a hurry, start walking towards the exit and someone
will help.

do not count on dedicated assistance though.

Subject: [AI] Attending a conference

Best,
Rahul

Re: [AI] Has anyone tried open source screen reader?

2013-05-30 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi Nidhi,

The accent of sscreen reader output is synthesizer dependent and not screen
reader dependent. A screen reader sends data to a synthesizer which sends
that data after processing to a speech-output device such as a soundcard or
a dedicated synthesizer.

Subject: How can students with disabilities succeed in STEM disciplines???
an EASI Webinar

Webinar 4-part Fee-based Series: Accessible STEM Made Easier

Dates: Tuesday June 4, 11, 18, and 25

Times: 11 Pacific Noon Mountain, 1 Central and 2 PM Eastern

This series is extremely important if students with disabilities are to
have an opportunity to succeed in today's skilled professions all of which
require familiarity with one or more of the science, Technology,
engineering and technology disciplines.

We want to make this widely accessible. Instead of charging a fee for the
series, we are providing it free to everyone.

In this series, you have the opportunity to hear from nationally recognized
professionals who are pioneers in making STEM disciplines accessible to
people with disciplines. Even if you are not interested in Stem topics, you
need to be familiar with what is happening so you can enlighten faculty and
encourage students.

I am not a scientist although as an adult I have a growing interest in it.
My reason for organizing this series is that STEM content provides some of
the toughest accessibility hurddles. I have watched dedicated leaders
struggle to transcend the problems. Now, real progress is happening, and at
the same time authors can provide accessible content with better and easier
tools than ever.

Week 1: June 4. Access to complex graphics using IVEO

Presenters: John Gardner and John Taylor

John Gardner and John Taylor will demonstrate conversion of graphical
information to accessible SVG (Scalable vector Graphics) using IVEO
authoring software. The resulting SVG file is then easily accessible by
blind users using the IVEO audio-tactile access method.

Week 2 Progress towards accessible analytics and data visualization

Presenter: Ed Summers, Sr Manager, Accessibility and Applied Assistive
Technology, SAS Institute, Inc.

Numeracy and fluency with data are skills that are required for success in
the 21st century knowledge economy. Join Ed Summers, Senior Manager of
Accessibility at SAS Institute, for a review of recent advances towards
accessible analytics and data visualization at SAS.

Week 3: June 18. LEAN Math

Presenter: John Gardner

John Gardner will demonstrate the new LEAN Math editor interface to MS
Word/MathType. LEAN provides both compact audio and Braille access to
MathType equations in Word. MathType equations can be edited, and new
equations created in the LEAN editor. In addition to reading and composing
math, the editor includes a number of powerful efficient navigation and
processing features such as ability to copy a fraction with a single
keystroke and then invert it when pasting with another keystroke; cutting
out the denominator of a fraction and pasting it into the opposite side of
the equation, etc.

Week 4: we are in the process of scheduling a topic on lab access

Specifics will be here in a few days.

Re: [AI] Has anyone used open source screen reader?

2013-05-30 Thread Amar Jain
Hi Nidhi,

If things have not changed subsequent to Ubuntu 10.4, then the tts
used by Orca is ESpeak. Which itself is an open-source synthesizer.
Similar TTS is used by NVDA on Windows.

In general, users do say that the voice of ESpeak is more synthetic,
but if the user is completely new, and has not got hang of Eloquence,
then certainly starting with Orca will not be an issue. Previously,
there were issues in Orca's voice being thrown out, as there were cuts
while speech was produced, but I guess it is getting better day by
day.

The advantage of using ESpeak over others is that it supports Indian
regional languages too. You could also consider using Vinux, which is
especially designed operating system (based on Ubuntu) for visually
impaired, providing more accessible environment.

Do let me know if you want feedback on any specific issue.

Regards,
--

Re: [AI] Has anyone tried open source screen reader?

2013-05-30 Thread Renuka Warriar Edakkunni
Hi Nidhi,

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and 11.04 with the screen reader Orca without
any trouble for the last three years. I found the accent more
acceptable than JAWS. SURE, THE ACCENT OF THE nvda IS THE SAME, SINCE
BOTH ARE USING THE SAME TTS.

RENUKA.

On 5/30/13, Pranav Lal pranav@gmail.com wrote:
 Hi Nidhi,

The accent of sscreen reader output is synthesizer dependent and not screen
reader dependent. A screen reader sends data to a synthesizer which sends
that data after processing to a speech-output device such as a soundcard or
 a dedicated synthesizer.

 Hi all

Has anyone tried an open source screenreader called Orca? What has been
 your
 experience?

We recently did a training at 3 blind schools for Orca and consistently,
 the
students said that Orca is easier to understand bcs it has an Indian
 accent.
But I would like an opinion from this group too. If you have used, please
 do
share your feedback. It will help us very much.

 Thank you

Hi Jyoti,

I have recently heard of a NGO called Esha that can create maps. If you
have access to a tactile graphics embosser, then you can print any map you
want once suitable preprocessing has been done.

The Royal National Institute of the blind in the UK has world maps. They do
have an export department and would be worth contacting.
