Subject: [AI] Tulasi R an ex-NAB Karnataka student got killed

I'm very sad to share the news of sad demise of Tulasi R. She was
 student

 of
NAB Karnataka and then JSS Polytechnic Mysore. She was also a trainer at
JSS. Got to know that it was a murder by her husband last night.

She was known to me and was a very good girl. She even had a plan to
 take

 up
self employment and about two two years ago, I reviewed her business
 idea

 of
setting up a centre for all utility collection service like telephone
 bill
 etc.

 Lost a very good friend.

May her soul be rest in peace.

 Srinivasu

the thing is, the hosting sites (rapid shair and all others) does not
give permonant URL of a file to download. so it might be possible that
your download link has been expired now. you have to download it
again.

[AI] Teachers prejudiced against disabled kids, says Indian Statistical Institute study

2013-10-02 Thread avinash shahi
KOLKATA: A study conducted among teachers in government- and
government-aided schools in the city has revealed that most of them
are prejudiced against pupils with disabilities.
http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-10-01/kolkata/42574022_1_young-teachers-indian-statistical-institute-negative-attitude
According to the study, conducted by the Psychology Research Unit of
the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), a large number of teachers
believe that children with disabilities are careless, insincere,
doubtful and rigid. So much for the government's initiative to
promote inclusive education. A study conducted by the Psychology
Research Unit of Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in government and
government-aided schools in Kolkata has revealed that a large number
of teachers consider differently-abled children to be careless,
insincere, doubtful and rigid.

The same teachers believe that children without special needs are
systematic, confident, sincere and responsive.

The research paper was presented at the Indian Science Congress with a
view to impress upon the state government that our schools may still
not be ready for inclusive education, which the government is trying
to promote.

The study revealed some startling facts. The most negative attitude
towards children with disabililies was expressed by young teachers;
those with postgraduate degrees; and those from high socio-economic
backgrounds. Many of those who held this attitude have people with
disabilities at home, said Sumana Dutta, a research scholar at ISI .

The institute collaborated with Bikashayan, an NGO, in carrying out the study.

To gauge the attitude of 1,472 teachers in Kolkata, researchers used
what is known as a semantic differential scale. In a semantic
differential scale, respondents are asked to choose where his or her
position lies, on a scale between two bipolar adjectives. This scale
is used to measure opinions, attitudes and values, explained Dr
Debdulal Dutta Roy, assistant professor of the Psychology Research
Unit. In this case, some of the pairs of bipolar adjectives used were
careless and systematic, insincere and sincere, doubtful and
confident and rigid and responsive. The questionnaire with 20 such
bipolar adjectives was filled in by teachers, parents and
administrative staff.

A complex statistical method known as Principal Component Analysis
with Varimax Rotation was used to arrive at the results.

We surveyed 1,829 people in all. While 1,472 were teachers, there
were 262 parents and the remaining administrative staff. We noticed
that the teachers had the most negative attitude. Teachers from north
Kolkata had the worst attitude followed by those in the south and
west, Dutta added.

According to Dutta Roy, who monitored the process, it was a surprise
that some teachers who have children with disabilities also display
this attitude. This reveals that the teachers are not considering the
limitations of a child with disabilities, said the executive council
member of the International Association for Analytical Psychology.
The second part of the study revealed that most schools (government-
and government-aided) don't have the infrastructure required for
inclusive education. There is clearly a need for remedial teaching and
psycho-educational teaching if inclusive education has to be
successful. Maybe the teachers will need more training. For the
moment, though, special schools can't be done away with.

In the second part of the survey, 293 schools were surveyed. It was
found that 42% of these schools don't have their own drinking water
facility. Resource rooms - remedial classrooms where students with
special needs are given specialized assistanceare - absent in 95% of
these schools. It was also found that 98% schools have no resource
teachers.

Though 98% schools consider a resource person beneficial, in more
than 44% schools, such teachers pay just a single visit in a month. In
53% schools, the visit is just for an hour. More than 85% schools have
untrained teachers. If there is a problem, how will these teachers
react? The problem lies with the non-manipulative nature of our
pedagogy. Things will have to be more manipulative if children are to
receive proper education, Dutta Roy added.

Re: [AI] Tulasi R an ex-NAB Karnataka student got killed

2013-10-02 Thread Devdas Nayak

I dont think in this case the brroker is to be blamed entirely. .
Tulasi must have got a chance to meet her prospective husband. Why did she
not disclose about her disability then and choose to do so after her
marriage?

What was her intent behind concealing her disability ?
All the material facts should be disclosed by both the parties before
entering into the contract of marriage.
Sometimes when the disability is not apparent people tend to hide it and
the consequences are disastrous.

IPhones
Is not having much models like other android phones. It will come as 4, 4S,
5, 5s and there is a new one with cheaper price which is 5C. but I was told
that is not nice. So it depends upon your spending capacity though. It has
16 gig, 32 gig and 64 gig. So see how much you can spend and go for S
models.

In the mobile version, after the status edit box, there is a link labelled as

Sometimes when the disability is not apparent people tend to hide it and

I'm very sad to share the news of sad demise of Tulasi R. She was

She was known to me and was a very good girl. She even had a plan to

 Lost a very good friend.

May her soul be rest in peace.

Re: [AI] dot walker

2013-10-02 Thread raju singh
Sorry for intervention, as I am also trying using android of one of my
friend, I tried dialing my phone number, but the problem I get, when I touch
any number say 9, instead of 9 by mistakely I touched on 6, and 6 number has
written just one touch which I don't want. How I noticed 6 has written is
that talkback saying, 6 clicked. Further more, I didn't get any option
for erasing this 6 number. But when I try on I phone, really I didn't even
thaught that I could able to operate this phone. Though both phone was fully
touch screen, but in I phone, when I touch any number say 9, it first saying
9, and in order to press this number, I simply double tap on that number,
and finally 9 was written
So my silly question is, other then screen reader such as talkback, does we
need to set up any preference in order to use android phone more
indipendently? Cause it is not possible at least for me to carry always an
extra physical keyboard.

Hello mam, though the behaviour of xp and 7 or 8 is quite different, but the
core thing is the same. As I have learn the basic of computer in xp, but I
am happily using win 7. jaws will behave different in windows 7 and 8, and
at first or second time it will be bit difficult and unknowing but once you
start using, you will enjoy. Old hp scanner/printer driver might not support
by windows 7 as those driver is outdated, but the real beauty of win 7 is
that it can act almost all such old printer/scanner as plog and play, that
meanse, most of the printer doesn't require any driver to play with windows
7. just turn on your scanner, plog your scanner USB in the USB port of your
computer having windows 7, and after few second you'll sea the majic. I am
telling cause in most of syber café, I usually go with my laptop, and ask
them only allow me to use there printer. I don't know which companies
printer they have on there café, First of all they will tell the same that
they doesn't have driver of the printer they are using, I insure them that I
can use there printer without driver, and finally as usual problem will get
solved. Even in my home I am using my hp office zet pro scanner package on
my laptop without installing any driver.

I can not comment on kurzweil cause I am not the kurzweil user. And latest
kurzweil might supporting windows 7 or 8.

2013-10-02 Thread Mahesh S. Panicker
Just had a look through my android phone, the facebook app for android
does give a tag option. I haven't explored it much, shall report back
ones I am done. Nevertheless an improvement from facebook, at least to
provide the option, from the more options page, I could find the add
location and add feeling options as well. Hopefully they'll have the
interface in such a way so that the tagging would be in the usual
format, and we would be able to tag friends on comments as well.

i cant help u with any immediate job, but 1 advise i can give u, is
that if you've not cleared your NET already, then make the most of
your current free time to prepare and qualify for it, so that in case

as far as journalism goes, you can keep looking for online sites that
need creative writers and keep posting your cv and applying wherever u

mentioning your blindness in your cv till the time of your interview.
well, hope u get lucky soon! all the best.

Some of you may already be aware of this, but I thought it was appropriate on
this list to mourn the very recent passing of Dr.
Abraham Nemeth. I understand he was 94. I, like others on this list, was
honored to have known him fairly well, and I feel that
he played a very significant role, through the Nemeth Code, in my majoring in
math and my subsequent careerin information
technologies. Here is the press rease issued by our national office:

National Federation of the Blind Mourns Passing of Dr. Abraham Nemeth
Honors His Pioneering Work to Enhance Braille
Baltimore, Maryland (October 2, 2013):

The National Federation of the Blind today mourns the death of Dr. Abraham
Nemeth, the scientist who invented the Nemeth Braille
Code for Mathematics and Scientific Notation and was a lifelong champion of
Braille.

Dr. Marc Maurer, president of the National Federation of the Blind, said: Dr.
Nemeth had a great mind and a wonderful sense of
humor. His invention of the Braille code that bears his name has enabled many
blind people to learn, work, and excel in
scientific, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and his tireless Braille
advocacy work undoubtedly changed countless lives.
He will be sorely missed and his contributions will be valued by generations to
come.

[AI] Fwd: 1st Global Conference: Sexuality and Disability

2013-10-02 Thread muruganandan.k
-- Forwarded message --
From: Conference Alerts ale...@conferencealerts.com
Date: Wed, 02 Oct 2013 01:59:16 -0700 (PDT)
Subject: 1st Global Conference: Sexuality and Disability
To: send2...@gmail.com

1st Global Conference: Sexuality and Disability

Tuesday 6th May - Thursday 8th May 2014
Lisbon, Portugal

Call For Presentations:

Sexuality is an integral part of the personality of everyone: man,
woman and child; it is a basic need and aspect of being human that
cannot be separated from other aspects life. (World Health
Organisation)

Statistics suggest that over 50 percent of disabled people do not have
a sex life, which is not surprising given the fact that disabled
people are too often considered as non-sexual or asexual. Recent
television programmes shown in the UK have attempted to document the
sex and love lives of the disabled, The Undateables and Sex on Wheels
(both Channel 4 TV). While such programmes can be seen as progressive
in terms of acknowledging that disabled people want and/or have sex
lives, moving away from the popular perception of disabled people as
asexual, they also perpetuate the medical model of disability in which
disability is constructed in sympathetic terms and portrayed in a
voyeuristic fashion: disability as object of festishistic scopophilia.
While social issue cinema continues to evoke sympathy rather than
challenge conventions, horror cinema constructs disability not only as
sexualised but often as monstrous abnormality linked with criminality.
Images of disability may aim at evoking disgust through the
construction of the discourse of abjection. In addition, the sex lives
of the disabled are too often ignored within the arena of disability
politics itself.

This conference seeks to challenge popular conceptions and perceptions
of sexuality and disability. In addition to academic papers, we are
particularly interested in opening up a space for the discussion of
personal experiences of disability and sexuality and the role of sex
workers, community programs and the work of sex educators.
Inter-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary perspectives are sought on
sexuality and disability, including cross-cultural and transcultural
perspectives. Non-traditional presentations are encouraged including
workshops, performances and round table discussions.

Papers, presentations, workshops and pre-formed panels are also
invited on any of the following themes:

Representations of Disability and Sexuality
- Visual images – painting, photography, advertising
- Moving images – television, film, video, theatre, performance art
- Music and disability – music videos, groups, artists
- Narratives of disability – poetry, biography, autobiography,
fiction and non-fiction

Desire and Disability
- The fetishization of disability
- Normative/Non-normative desires
- Voyeurism and disability
- Eroticism and disability
- Disability and the politics of disgust
- Dating and disability

Gender and Disability
- Feminism and disability politics
- Femininity and Masculinity and disability
- Gender, class and disability
- Body image and disability

Sexualities of Disability
- queer, trans, and other non-normative sexualities
- disabilities and sexualities
- aging and sexuality
- appropriate versus inappropriate expressions of sexuality

Difference and Disability
- Visible/invisible disabilities
- Intellectual disabilities
- Mental health issues including depression
- Ethnicity, sexuality and disability

Sex Work and Disability
- Sex educators
- Sex workers
- Community programs
- State run programs

Law, Ethics, the State and Disability
- Eugenics and state stationed sterilisation
- Legislation, disability and sexuality
- Ethics, desire and disability
- Cultural conceptions of disability and sexuality
- Sexual abuse and disability

Presentations will also be considered on any related theme.

In order to support and encourage interdisciplinarity engagement, it
is our intention to create the possibility of starting dialogues
between the parallel events running during this conference. Delegates
are welcome to attend up to two sessions in each of the concurrent
conferences. We also propose to produce cross-over sessions between
two and possibly all three groups - and we welcome proposals which
deal with the relationship between the experience of prison, and/or
responsible and ethical living and/or disability and sexuality.

What to send:
300 word abstracts should be submitted by Friday 6th December 2013 If
an abstract is accepted for the conference, a full draft paper should
be submitted by Friday 14th March 2014. 300 word abstracts should be
submitted simultaneously to both Organising Chairs; abstracts may be
in Word or RTF formats with the following information and in this
order:

a) author(s), b) affiliation as you would like it to appear in
programme, c) email address, d) title of abstract, e) body of
abstract, f) up to 10 keywords.
E-mails should be entitled: SD1 Abstract Submission.

I'm very sad to share the news of sad demise of Tulasi R. She was student of
NAB Karnataka and then JSS Polytechnic Mysore. She was also a trainer at
JSS. Got to know that it was a murder by her husband last night.

She was known to me and was a very good girl. She even had a plan to take up
self employment and about two two years ago, I reviewed her business idea of
setting up a centre for all utility collection service like telephone bill
etc.

Lost a very good friend.

May her soul be rest in peace.

I am not justifying murder, or barbaric husband.
But, hiding disability is not a joke!
One should not resort to such techniques for getting married!!!
Divorce would have been appropriate, instead of death!!

Re: [AI] Tulasi R an ex-NAB Karnataka student got killed

2013-10-02 Thread Kanchan Pamnani

I am so glad the discussion is veering towards the real story.
Yes she was killed by her husband and that is sad.
Had he been alive the law would have taken its own course.
But we have to look at the background of this story-
Did her parents and peers mentally and or physically veer her towards
marriage.

So did she get pressurised into marrying.
If she did then was it OK for her to marry some person who otherwise would
have been an unfit husband.
This is the situation in Society where girls are forced into matrimony. Not
much attention is given to what kind of husband she is getting.
The parents of the girl and the broker manuplate the girl . Sometimes the
girl herself accepts and sometimes she reconciles. This happens to a lot of
girls but since we are on accessindia I will say it happens to many visually
challenged girls.
Some marriages end like this one, some go on where the girl is constantly
tortured and some end when the girl runs away.

I met a bright young girl from this group whose parents were trying to get
her married to a distand relative by paying a hefty dowry. She was able to
get out of the mess before the marriage and she was able to get her parents
to accept the situation. Today she is happily working and lives in a hostel.
For obvious reasons her name is not disclosed. I dont know about her future
but I wish her the best and hope she finds someone who cares for her.

The other aspect is that visually challenged people need to feel and touch.
This makes marriage necessary in Indian society. This is natural for both
sexes so lets not deny this too.

He is sighted. we don't no the real motive exactly, As I said he is an
drinker... This is an arranged marriage.

Did her parents and peers mentally and or physically veer her towards
marriage. No.

They fully dependent on that bloody broker. They didn't enquire properly.

What had motivated her to marry such a guy?
 Any clues?

Was it blind girl marrying any guy out of no choice?

It may sound politically incorrect but many blind girls marry any tom dick

and harry who is ready to marry them, sometimes even matches are arranged

 by paying hefty sums
 ..
Now, don't please harangue that it happens with sighted girls also, and
blindness has nothing to do with it.
The fact that A happens without B, is no reason to deny Causative or
correlative role of B with A...
