[AI] Mumbai: Fight for Justice continues: Blind Protesters on Road in heavy downpour blocked the traffic at Mantralaya

2016-09-20 Thread avinash shahi
Express News Service 21 September 2016
Traffic outside the state secretariat, Mantralaya, remained blocked
for almost half-an-hour Tuesday afternoon when a group of specially
challenged protesters took to the streets protesting government
apathy.
http://indianexpress.com/article/mumbai/mumbai-to-be-heard-visually-impaired-block-road-outside-mantralaya-3041445/
Members of the National Federation of Visually Impaired Persons stood
on the road outside the main gate at Mantralaya, raising slogans
against Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and his government. Their
main grouse was that government benefits they were eligible for were
being denied owing to corruption and government apathy.

The group claimed while they had submitted a memorandum in this regard
to the Chief Minister’s Office a month ago, it had elicited no
response. Ironically, the protest comes days after Fadnavis was
complimented for promptly resolving a job-related matter pertaining a
wheelchair-bound doctor.

While the policemen allowed the protesters to carry out their protest,
they were later bundled off in police vans amid a steady downpour. The
federation has alleged the benefits available to the specially
challenged under the government-sponsored Sanjay Gandhi Niradhar
Yojana were not reaching them, and that these were being siphoned off
by corrupt officials and middlemen at the district and village level.

While beneficiaries eligible under the scheme are provided a financial
assistance of Rs 600 a month, the protesters claimed families had not
been receiving the entire amount. The federation has also been
demanding that the assistance be raised to Rs 6,000 taking inflation
and price rise into account. But the government is yet to give in to
this demand.

Rahul Patil, one of the protesters, fired a barb at the government and
the lawmakers. “The government can raise salaries of lawmakers who are
well-off. But in 10 years, we have seen no hike in our financial
assistance. The government is deaf to the needs of the blind. They
should be ashamed of themselves.” The chief minister is away on an
official trip to the US, but a senior official said the protesters’
demands would be looked into.

[AI] For the Researchers: Allahabad University: Ray of light for AU blind students

2016-09-20 Thread avinash shahi
I need the contact No of Sanjeev Kumar quoted in the report, if anyone
has his number kindly share with me.
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/allahabad/Ray-of-light-for-AU-blind-students/articleshow/5549500.cms
Rajiv Mani Feb 8 2010

ALLAHABAD: The Allahabad University has taken a novel initiative to
help blind students pursue education without any obstruction. As part
of the endeavour, AU students will record the text books for their
visually handicapped batchmates. And the students, who would be
performing the task, would also earn a remuneration for themselves.
.

.
The initiative has been taken by university's Jawaharlal Nehru centre
for differently abled students under the University Grants
Commission's earn while you learn scheme.
.

Talking to TOI, centre coordinator and AU's only blind teacher,
Sanjeev Kumar said, "Presently, we have three blind students in AU.
But once the text books are recorded, it would help us to attract more
blind students to pursue their education in AU.'' Initially, the
centre will engage 10 students for the purpose who would be recording
the text of the recommended books on the recording system, which would
be done directly on the hard disk of computers.

.

.
Sanjeev added that blind students who are well versed in English
language use the available software wherein the book is scanned and
the computers read the text. But since the software is not available
in Hindi, students from Hindi medium face problems. Once the text
books are recorded, they would be part of the institute's library and
students can use them, centre coordinator added.
.

.
"The requirement is on an urgent basis as final exams will begin from
next month. Within a limited period, we would have to record as much
text as possible,'' he added.

.

.
For selecting students for the purpose, Jawaharlal Nehru centre for
differently abled students will conduct interviews at the office of
dean student welfare on February 10 at 2:30 pm. Students selected for
the task would be paid according to the norms laid down in the UGC
scheme, Kumar informed.

[AI] Want suggestions to purchase portable voice amplifier or loudspeaker

2016-09-20 Thread Mohib Anwar Rafay
I heard there are portable voice amplifier or loudspeaker which you
can carry in your laptop bag, these are useful for giving
presentations and also to teach a classroom of 70 - 80 students.
Basically it may save you from shouting inside the classroom. So I
want to purchase one of such voice amplifier. Therefore I want your
suggestions for a good, easy to use and accessible system. I would
like to purchase a wireless system if it is available, as you can wear
the microphone around your neck and keep the amplifier at some place
like on the table. So please suggest me something. your

  Dear all,
Hope you guys are doing great. Apologize for long hibernation.
Just would like to take moment to update you on few initiatives which I and
Amar Jain of Mumbai is volunteering our time towards making sites accessible
and screen reader friendly.

1.We have been working with Income tax authorities to make their
sites accessible for the past few months and happy to note that now sites has
been made accessible to large extent. However few tools and utilities remain
inaccessible and working on the same as we speak. Hope to resolve the entire
issues by next month.

  2. 2. Matter of fact; I did file taxes independently with ease by
myself except for couple of hurdles which I highlighted to the income tax
authorities for their intervention. Request you to also make time to view
this site and offer your valuable comment on the same.
Let's work and collaborate for accessible & inclusive India.
  Kind regards
  Asif

[AI] (AI) Difficulty in accessing the BSE website

2016-09-20 Thread turab chimthanawala
Hello all
Would like to connect with a regular user of the BSE website. The
homepage is quite accessible , but when I enter the security name to
check its compliance status , once the relevant screen appears JAWS
simply reads the various heads like Meetings, Corporate Actions etc.
When I open one of them , although I can see a box appearing on the
screen giving necessary details , JAWS fails to read the same.
Keenly await an urgent revert
Best
Turab
