Hello,

Some days back I installed NetKing antivirus on my C5 handset. I noticed that
each time I switched off my handset, I have to reinstall Talks. Once even the
registration was lost. Even now I have to enable Talks when I am forced to
switch off my mobile or Talks suddenly stops talking.

There is yet another problem. My phone memory is getting full too frequently.
It is hardly 8 mb free most of the time. Do you recommend NetKing antivirus? I
am using NetKing mobile guard.

Best regards,

[AI] Two articles from the Ziegler Magazine.

2011-11-08 Thread K. Nageswaraiah
Feature Writer John Christie - Tools for a More Accessible Internet

A website in England is attempting to fix the web for the disabled and
elderly. In order to assist in fixing the web, you can actually sign
up and help them out by going to their website,
http://www.fixtheweb.net/ and become a volunteer or a reporter.

In order to give feedback on fixing the web, you can also go to the
Web Access Initiative of the World Wide Web consortium on its website
at http://www.w3.org/wai/. This web site documents problems the
disabled have with various web sites.

Many of us are well aware that there is a serious accessibility issue
with most websites. While there are a few who are paving the way and
making accessibility a crucial element of their design, there is much
work to be done. It must be said, though, that it doesn't seem that
the problem lies in an unwillingness to create accessible material as
much as there is a misunderstanding about what it means to have an
accessible site.

That's where the importance of these new groups comes into play. By
educating website designers about how to make their sites
accessible--and involving the people who require accessible websites
to evaluate them--they're helping to change the fundamental way in
which websites are designed from the ground up. For those designers
who may be curious to know if their site is as accessible as it should
be, there are also organizations who provide testing services to help
them reach their accessibility goals.

Thankfully, there are multiple resources available to website
designers. The World Wide Web Consortium offers quick tips for
designers who may have questions. Their web site is
http://www.w3.org/wai/references/quicktips and serves as a quick
reference card for making sites accessible.

Another resource that can help in assisting to make sites accessible
to the disabled is the Bobby Accessibility Checker. The Bobby software
can generate a report on a website's overall accessibility. This is a
good site to use if designers want to see whether their site has
either a few or a lot of accessibility issues to contend with. The web
address is http://www.cast.org/bobby.

A great publication that can assist in designing web sites is
http://trace.wisc.edu/world/web/. This publication is published by the
Trace Center from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin.

IBM also has a list of accessibility guidelines that is available at
http://www-3.ibm.com/able/guidelines/web/accessweb.html.

All of these resources that are available to web designers are great
news for the visually impaired community. By creating a standard for
accessibility and offering education, the future internet will no
longer be a place of frustration and barriers, and instead will become
something that is built, from the ground up, to serve all of its users
equally.

Health and Lifestyle - VI Fit: Bringing Active Video Games to the
Blind

It's a well-known fact that maintaining a sedentary lifestyle is not
conducive to good health. Lack of physical activity has been linked to
heart disease, obesity, and even cancer. It's also true that
individuals who are visually impaired tend to have fewer opportunities
to engage in physical activities that promote good health and provide
enough stimulation to maintain proper fitness. This is especially true
in visually impaired children, and results in lower performance motor
skills, reduced physical fitness, and an increased chance of obesity.

Ever since the release of the Nintendo Wii, a video game system
designed around physical interactions with the video games, people
have been heralding the design for its ability to not only entertain,
but to actually serve as a way to improve physical fitness and motor
skills--so much so, that they're even used in rehabilitation centers.
These types of games have been called exergames since the player
must be physically involved in order to play.

Now, a group called VI Fit has devised a way to use the Nintendo Wii
platform to create games that can benefit the visually impaired. Up
until now, these games required the user to be sighted. However, with
programming tweaks, they've developed multiple games that can utilize
the audio and vibration functions built into the motion sensing
controller to make these types of games accessible.

One of the games offered is a take on the classic Whack-a-Mole game.
Called, Pet-n-Punch, the player helps a farmer get rid of varmints by
bopping them on the head, while at the same time avoiding the cats
that pop up from time to time as well. While it may not seem like
something that will cause you to break a sweat, this game is VI Fit's
most physical offering and it gives the player a much higher workout
than the other two that they feature.

A second game is a take on the popular Wii Bowling game. By using
vibration feedback in the controllers, the player can find the
direction they need to throw their ball while receiving audio and
speech effects

Hello,

Please find the steps below, but this is applicable in N79 and not sure
about your phone model.

1. First create a general alarm, say, at 5:00 AM.
2. Again, go to the alarm option and move to the Alarm Tab. Note:
there are 3 tab pages within Alarm option in N79, e.g., Time Tab, Alarm Tab
and World Clock tab.
3. When you have moved to the alarm tab, you will find the already
created alarm of 5 AM over there.
4. Now, press key 1 and go to the reset option.
5. Press down arrow till you find repeat. Note: you don't need to
make any change in the time of alarm).
6. Now, press select button and you will find options (check boxes)
like A) Daily, B) Workdays, C) Weekly D) within 24 hours E) not repeated
Etc.
7. Select the desired daily and you are done. Follow the same
procedure for multiple timings as per your requirement.

Cheers

 Hello,
You can set alarm for every hour in daily mode. I have set this
feature in my N79 to remind me four times in a day.

For whichever hours you wish your mobile to alarm you simply set
daily alarm once for everyday and select the alarm tone of your liking.
It will keep you reminding everyday unless you turn it off.

I had the similar issue and had actualy posted the query on the list. On the
basis of the responses I got, the only option appeared to be to do a factory
restore through the *#7370# command. This virtually formats the phone memory
and nothing is left, including the Talks serial number.

Interestingly, however, the issue gott resolved when I updated my firmware
to the latest update. But that is not advisable as many features, such as
the web, email and help contents, become inaccessible with Talks and are
likely to be fixed only with the Talks' next release.

Suraj,
Yes it does. You need to use native browser of your Nokia phone.

Just go to options and try connecting. It works well. Also, if you want the
latest emoze, select 'software update' from the options and you can download
and install the latest version.

Hi Friends,
   Greetings for the day...
I bought Nokia E 63 in the month of March, which has IBM lotus
notes traveler installed as mail browser.
Since its purchase I have been trying to configure my gmail but
all my attempts have gone in vain.
I request the group members to assist me in configuring the same.
The fields that I have to fill are my
user name
password
server name
 access point
where I am able to do with three but at the server name I fail.
to my knowledge there usually be two server name fields one for
incoming mails and other for outgoing mails but in this case there is
only one server name and even in this case I have tried a few
combinations of pop3.gmail.com, smtp.gmail.com, pop3.googlemail.com,
smtp.googlemail.com, gmail.com, googlemail.com, google.mail.com,
mail.google.com and so on but all these attempts have gone of no
use...

So plz guide me in this issue...

Thanking you in anticipation of positive response...

Or certain programs like skipe may be automatically triguring the GPRS
connection. Pressing and holding the end call button usually brings-up
the message whether you want to disconnect the GPRS and you will be
disconnected up on choosing yes. If that does not work, then simply
restart the phone. I am not familiar with the E72 menu layers, but you
may wish to check your connectivity settings to make sure that you are
connected only when needed. One other app to consider is the maps and
they may triguring the GPRS as well.

Re: [AI] congratulations to Swathi madam for her achievement in Civils:

2011-05-24 Thread K. Nageswaraiah
From the above two mails, it seems that her so called achievement is not a true
one and also, she and her supporters are resorting to this type of undue
publicity, which will in future, affect the credibility of such claims by the
visually impaired. Thanks to my friends I had also gone through the list of
successful candidates but didn't find her name therein. If she had achieved
anything great, let her prove it to the local people there and win their
confidence.

Hi friends,

It’s in high spirits to see a mail on this list concerning the attainment of a
visually challenged girl in the UPSC results. But unfortunately there are
certain doubts on her feat. My only intension here is, only to bring clarity
and not to let down any one.
Firstly, the 78th rank belongs to a male candidate
[78 153687 NILESHKUMAR MAHADEV KSHIRSAGAR]
There is no prospect to even dream 78th rank in the disable list because there
are less than 78 ranks.
Secondly, the person who is declaring and going for a huge publicity in the
media belongs to Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh her name is A Swathi. But
in the entire list there are only two names being found with the name swathi,
they are
[312 SWATI CHOPRA [ and [646 SWATI SHAHI].

I myself gone through the whole rankings, but could not find the person called
A Swati. The same news is getting published in the newspapers daily, if this
continues, it may damage the fame of visually challenged candidates in the
future, it may not effect everywhere everyone, but, it will certainly show
pessimistic impact on the visually challenged community in that particular
locality.

If she had really attained that success, every one of us will without doubt
feel happy. But if it results in a depressing conclusion then, one has to think
what to do with this sort of exposure.

I am not blaming anyone at this point, ass it is media hype, every one will
think that it is authentic information. I request the members to react and
bring clarity on this issue, so that we can avoid this promotion.

Thanks in regards,
 Raghavaiah

Hi,
I responded after carefully observing the contents in the two emails and also
after reading the Word document containing the list of successful candidates.
When this news was first brought to my notice, I requested the local people not
to try to expose the individual, as it'll create bad impression about the VI in
the public. Meanwhile, the local NFB members are in the process of filing an
application under RTI, I was told.

Hi,

I too didn't make any efforts to verify the authenticity of the information.
But I request all the members not to write their personal opinions on
this matter until the truth is revealed. Please write only if you
have a strong evidence either to deny or confirm the authenticity of
the news. You are writing on a public forum. So, check twice before

If someone really needs a clarity, my suggestion would be to file RTI.

[AI] Regarding braille presses and spelling mistakes.

2010-06-22 Thread K. Nageswaraiah
Sir,
There're so many blind schools and braille presses but the habit of reading
braille is declining. Besides, the braille presses are not prompt in their
dealings with the few braille readers. Not to speak of textbooks and books of
general interest, they're not even in a position to provide magazines in time.
Regarding spelling and grammar errors, extensive reading and writing and keen
observation of phonetics and exceptions will make a difference. When I was in
school, I found that many students did not pay adequate attention to spellings
after learning braille contractions.

Some of the braille presses catering to the needs of the blind people of Andhra
Pradesh are: APVCC Braille Press, Hyderabad, Devnar Braille Press, Hyderabad
and RDT Braille Press, Ananthapur.

Re: [AI] No GPRS? 'Jaamun' offers email on any phone

2010-06-21 Thread K. Nageswaraiah

I subscribed to the service. Although it's simple, it's not that prompt.
Besides, the emails are edited and presented in simple shorthand, i.e., some
vowels are omitted. Thus, one does not receive full message. We may incur SMS
charges to forward, reply and send emails. There's one more such service
called MMAIL but the process involves the user to forward the emails to an
email ID given by the MMAIL. Anyway, these services are not very useful to the
blind, as the TALKS-compatible phones support GPRS.

_
The indigenous push mail service sans GPRS.
CHENNAI: Ashamed to pull your phone out in a gathering? If you have a phone
that would be hidden in the darkest corner of a museum of phone-snobs, all is
not lost yet. Thanks to Indian entrepreneurs 'Jaamun,' you can now whip out
that museum piece and check email on it. Oh yes, and without those GPRS charges
too.

'Jaamun's tagline is email on any mobile, and this simple service is what
they are providing - for the simplest of phones.

'Jaamun' is a venture by IIT Delhi alumni Pratiroop Mehta and Mayank Kumar. Mr.
Mehta was previously working for the new product development team at Reliance,
while Mr. Kumar was part of the enterprise software division at Microsoft India.

They started out building a mobile email client, but found that a lot of users
have phones that do not support GPRS. The solution, they found, would be to
leave GPRS out of it.

Any IMAP/POP supporting email server can be configured via 'Jaamun.' And you
can sign up online or by sending an SMS with the email ID and password to
9773467755. Once you map the mail ID and Twitter handle to the mobile number,
you are ready to receive, reply, forward and compose mails on your basic
phone, Mr. Mehta says.

For Facebook and Orkut, the integration is a little different - you will first
have to sign up for Gmail updates for both these social networking sites.

When you sign up online at http://www.jaamun.in, you get a free trial plan of
50 messages for a month, and you can subscribe to the service after the trial
period expires.

Apart from paying for the SMS (when you send mails), there are various
subscription packages available for the service.

Going by the site, it could range from Rs.49 to Rs. 75 a month. Push mail
service over GPRS is obviously on the higher side.

The advantage with 'Jaamun' is that it can work on any mobile and any network,
the creators say - there is no need for either GPRS or for installing an
application on the phone. As far as the service goes, there is smart message
extraction, compression, auto spam filters and attachment alerts.

On our site, we've made it very clear that we ensure the password and
everything is secure. The connection as we link to your email is also secure,
Mr. Mehta says.

So if you are not ready to get rid of that decadent phone yet, here, finally,
is a way you can redeem yourself.

Re: [AI] pls suggest a good mobile

2010-04-20 Thread K. Nageswaraiah

Hi,
I've been using Nokia E63 for the last 7 months quite successfully. Those who
have typing and/or computer knowledge can master it quickly. Chr key, function
key, edit key, delete key, ctrl key are some of the useful keys in the handset.
Besides, built-in accessibility features such as Voice Aide and say caller's
name are also worth noting. There're one touch keys for emailing, reading new
messages, calendar, contacts, etc. I make good use of the dictionary. But
there're some problems with the arrow keys.

change the line manually. As Vileen Shah once wrote, it has miles to go. As
my friend Ravi said, we cannot work 100% independently using MLE. D. Mani of

Is it a full-fledged software like TALKS and Mobile Speak?
Or, is it a supplement to TALKS?
 What's its cost?
I request you kindly to consider the possibility of including support for
Indian languages to make it accessible to more blind people than in any
 other country of the world.
Also, it'd be nice if currencies of as many countries as possible are
 identifiable with Vision Hunt.
 Thanking you in anticipation.

Hello Accessindians,
Happy Ugadi, Gudi Padwa, Cheti Chand, etc.
I'd like to know whether LIC bars the blind from buying policies other than
Moneyback and Endowment plans.
Here, the agents say that there're some restrictions by the LIC AND the PLI
against offering some policies to the blind.
Also, I request the active users of Nokia E63 to write about the use of ctrl
key, anti-virus and call recorder softwares, etc. which can be of use.
Thanking you in anticipation.

Re: [AI] Exam papers evaluation

2010-03-09 Thread K. Nageswaraiah
Here in Andhra Pradesh, teachers and lecturers receive reader's fees and these
fees are revised every five years.

Appointing a reading assistant is the right solution.
However, such an assistant should be freely chosen and may not be imposed.
Some allowance is given by Maharashtra government to VI teachers.
To find the required GR in Marathi, is somewhat a tough task, however, I will
try it, and its practical implementation and availing such an allowance
regularly is altogether another story.
Even UGC gives some monthly allowance to VI lecturers, or rather, I should
properly say, assistant professors now, however, it has to be claimed in
general grants for five years and hardly a few professors are actually able to
avail it, at least in my knowledge.

Yes, it is his responsibility to evaluate exam papers of his subject.
We, in Delhi, evaluate our exam papers with the help of sighted persons and
pay the costs. But school authorities can't force him to appoint any person
of their choice for that purpose.
