--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2006-01-18 02:52 EST ---
Comment #7 is the ACPI interrupt itself:

> 2.6.9-22.0.1.ELsmp (EL 4 kernel-smp )
> 9: 10 0 IO-APIC-level acpi

As there is nothing else on IRQ9, this means simply
that ACPI events, such as your power button, will not work.

You should be able to work around this failure by booting with
"acpi_sci=high" or "acpi_sci=low"
possibly with
"acpi_sci=edge" or "acpi_sci=level"
your dmesg may tell which, or you can just try them all
and the one that works will give you no dmesg error
and the power button will actually work.

For the recent failing kernel, does "acpi=noirq" make it work?

in the failure case, does /proc/interrupts show

if you rmmod the driver before suspend

Re: DSDT patch
Dave has it right. Linux distros should not support
systems that are running modified vendor firmware.
If a developer needs to run modified firmware, then
they can build a kernel to do so, and by definition
it is not supported. This is a feature.
I can't explain SuSE's reasoning for shipping
the initrd patch -- I consider it a SuSE bug.

Re: trying out the fix for this issue
ACPICA 20051216 is included in the latest ACPI patch.
You can run it in the latest -mm patch or patch 2.6.15 directly with this:
http://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/lenb/acpi/patches/test/2.6.15/

i don't use any extra boot options with 1656, and did not re-compile it, so i
assume some 'CS4236B detect bug' got fixed. i also assume ACPI is enabled in
1656 by default, but have not verified that.

the loss of sound first appeared with 1653. versions between 1456 and 1653 did
not return problems with sound, but did show the send_IPI behavior at shutdown.
i no longer have versions between 1456 and 1653, so cannot verify what effect
ACPI=off would have had on them (i discovered the effect of this option only
recently).

summary: 1656 seems to put things back to the same as post-1456, corrects a
sound problem with 1653, retains the send_IPI behavior at shutdown for the SMP
version.

If I recall, there are some issues in this product line with PIC vs
IOAPIC mode. If your system is working with the SMP+IOAPIC kernel,
it would be interesting if you can still boot it with "maxcpus=1" "noapic".

So is this working or failing with the latest kernel?

The difference between the success (warm reset)
and the failure (cold boot) is interesting
and suggest that checking for a BIOS update might make sense.

I assume that a reboot works fine and the issues are limited
to the cold boot from power-on case?

Hmmm, enabling K7/SSE in the failure case,

Very strange to see LNKC disabled in the failure
case and enabled in the success case -- you would
think a warm and cold boot would give us this link
in the same state...

The success case uses what the BIOS gave us: IRQ5,
but the failure case also happens to choose IRQ5 for LNKC.

The switch between power and battery is done in hardware/firmware
and is invisible to the OS. This failure is a system issue, not an OS issue.
I expect you'll see the same issue running a non-Linux OS on this box.

Re: black screen
Systems that support Linux are required to re-POST video on resume from S3.
If they don't, then their BIOS is broken.

Of course that doesn't help you much, since your system didn't ship from
the vendor with Linux installed... Try the video resume workarounds
in the source tree: Documentation/power/video.txt

Hmmm, dunno if the duplicate lapic_id is an issue if
the phantom one is disabled.

Does the failing kernel work with "maxcpus=2"?

dmesg from the latest kernel that boots properly in SMP+ ACPI mode
with no cmdline params may help.

hmmm, first the system ran with acpi disabled by default and
got the SMP send_IPI poweroff failure.
You used acpi=force to enable ACPI, and that fixed shutdown,
but broke sound.
Later kernels enabled ACPI by default and you needed acpi=off
to get sound back.
finally, comment #13 says that the latest kernel is back to
send_IPI failure, but sound is working -- does that kernel
have acpi enabled or disabled?

does poweroff still fail with FC5 T2?
Is it possible to try a 2.6.15 kernel.org kernel to see if
this is specific to fedora, or a generic problem that that
may effect only specific systems?

Re: 600X
Different bug report, but the cause is probably that
FC is currently built with CONFIG_ACPI_BLACKLIST_YEAR=0
which enables ACPI for all systems that claim to support it.
when previously the 600X was deemed too old to run ACPI.
Somebody just donated a 600X to me and it fails for me too
so maybe we'll be able to address that one in particular.

Re: SMP PIII
Does this still fail?
If so, is "pci=noacpi" sufficient to workaround the failure?
Please attach the output of "dmesg -s64000" of a successful boot,
and also if you can capture the serial "debug" console of
a failed boot.

This is a known upstream bug with a fix on the way.
The fix is for the button driver to have a suspend and resume
methods so it can be smart enough to throw away events
seen after .suspend and before .resume.

[ACPI-bugzilla] [Bug 5396] reboot hang - tc4200

http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5396

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2006-01-17 18:54 ---
The patch Len mentioned just adds a new boot option just like reboot=c,b and
w,b. So you still need boot option, it can't make your system automically work.

One another option is blacklist your laptop, let it always enter bios for
reboot. This way you don't need boot option.

[ACPI-bugzilla] [Bug 5888] computer does not wake up after going to sleep, reset button does not work

2006-01-17 Thread bugme-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5888

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2006-01-17 16:46 ---
Hi,

I have just tried 2.6.16-rc1:

the first time I did echo standby > /sys/power/state

the box came back, but I had to reload the network module and restart the
networking
init-servive.

I thought great - but I changed two bios settings in the mean time, so I
reverted them.
The two settings were 'gated clock function' which was normaly enabled, but
disabled this
time, and 'post video on resume' or so, which was disabled and normaly enabled.

I switched both back to their 'normal' settings and tried again.

This time on pinging an ip on my network (the dns-server) I got a big fat
kernel panic. Sadly
I do not have a camera :(, and the logs are empty.

But I retried, and this time, I did not get a panic, and network worked after
resuming
without any doing by my side.

So something got better, but the behaviour is a little bit unstable.

Oh, and 'mem' (with the changed bios settings) became better too: the box is
still dead, but
at least it reacted to the reset button and rebooted.

I will do some more 'tests' in ~12h

This is more likely an acpi or PCI problem than an IDE problem.

Your dmesg output wasn't complete. Could you please increase
CONFIG_LOG_BUF_SHIFT and try again, so we can see all the dmesg output?

Also, are you able to identify an earlier 2.6 kernel which didn't have this bug?
It helps us in identifying what change broke things, if we indeed broke it.

Thanks.

failure.

otherwise.

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2006-01-17 11:29 ---
Hi, not sure if I should post here, or open a new bug report. I decided here
might be best. I have a HP Compaq r4000 (r4218ea to be axact). I have flashed
my bios to version F1.B (using win expee - which i instaled especially for
doing that and nuked it right after.) It is an Amd64 ATI IXP system. I am using
Ubuntu Dapper amd-k8 2.6.15.12 kernel at the mo.

So - When I boot with no parameters the machine gets as far as the acpi _STA
_INI . stuff and hangs. If I pass apic=debug it boots (no idea why this
should affect the acpi scanning stuff). So far so weird. So the machine now
boots and if I pass report_lost_ticks I get loads of messages saying I am
losing ticks. This may be normal so I do not pass that option (I only tried it
because I saw a post saying this might help things. Besides that I am getting
the the lovely messages at quite frequent intervals in dmesg
APIC error on CPU0: 00(40)
APIC error on CPU0: 40(40)
which I see is at KERN_DEBUG level. Should this not be KERN_ERR seeing as how
it's an error? If it truly is a debug statement should it not be prtink'd only
when in apic debug mode?
Anyway I can help - let me know! If you need any data at all let me know!

Let me know what to create attachments of. bye!
ps: my laptop does not run at double speed as per the title of this message but
I feel this is where my issue should go... If this bug is getting too long
maybe another one relating to this issue _should_ be created. It took me a
while to get here :)

This bug is set to 2.6.12-rc5-mm but the bug affects even the most recent
stable kernel 2.6.15.1. Should the kernel version be changed to show it
affects more recent kernels ?

Well, the trip points are being updated by the _WAK method on wakeup (first
case), and by the event _Q42 from the embedded controller (second case). I
don't know the reason of the trip points reseting, possibly to prevent too
high thermal limit setting.

To avoid it you can comment out appropriate code lines and re-compile the DSDT.

This i get from latest git, it's looks like random error. Because now RIP is
{intel_i915_configure+246}, before {release_console_sem+296}. Standbay in
linux can't disable video adapter (in windows can), may be it's some thing with
this issue?
