Watch out that some automatic transfer switches assume half voltage is good
enough, that’s actually a failure mode we see a lot on commercial power.

On the same subject in our NOC we have a APC AP7723 AC transfer switch. Has
two AC inputs and if one fails automatically switches to the other. Handy when
doing maintenance on the UPS system. Would like something like that for when
we use a generator at a remote site we can plug one input into generator and
other into AC power. The idea is that hopefully when the generator runs out of
fuel power might be back on and save an urgent trip to switch over. Was
thinking there should be something cheaper and smaller than the APC unit?

This only applies to our small sites and rare extended outage. Most our main
sites have a ~50 gallon propane tank and small generac with transfer switch.

It doesn't need to be big. A couple hundred watts is more than enough. It just
needs to produce clean power for a UPS to ingest.

All my mobile ones are from Lowes - Troy Bilt brand. They're usually
Briggs engines. They all work for the APC UPS units, Mikrotik stuff, etc.

I've got the 5 gallon gas units, they're about 24 hours of run time - we
fill it up in the morning and at night to be safe.

What's a good generator likely to be in-stock locally? Mine has gone
missing. It doesn't need to be big. A couple hundred watts is more than
enough. It just needs to produce clean power for a UPS to ingest.

Re: [AFMUG] Local Generator

2018-11-27 Thread SmarterBroadband
I second the Honda 1000 and 2000 inverter generators.

Also suggest you convert to propane using a https://www.motorsnorkel.com/

We had ours done by them many years ago, I believe with the new snorkel it is
very easy to DIY.

They run a long time on a BBQ sized tank, you can use a bigger tank for
extended run times and it is clean….

Re: [AFMUG] Local Generator

2018-11-27 Thread Bill Prince
That makes a lot of sense. Those things probably don't expect to go much
beyond 50 hours per oil change, but over a longer period of (calendar)
time. Every 3rd extended run would get you at least 150 hours if you got
2 days per run. It would be on the order of 200 hours if you got 3 days
per run.

We also bought and extended runtime tank on eBay to allow it to run

Subject: [AFMUG] Local Generator

What's a good generator likely to be in-stock locally? Mine has gone missing.
It doesn't need to be big. A couple hundred watts is more than enough. It just
needs to produce clean power for a UPS to ingest.
