Re: [AFMUG] Mandatory OT

2019-06-08 Thread Chuck McCown
I used to have a pre flight checklist written by a guy that worked on film
sets. He was in charge of all things electrical. That was more of a book than
a check list. Things like spare filters for generators and making sure you
record the hours that bulbs have burned. It had a lot of really good ideas on
it so that you could prevent holding up the shooting of a movie by your lack of
attention to detail. I am sure there is a painful story behind every entry.
Wish I could find it.

With a 4 day work week, It sounds ‘especially reasonable’ to ask them to work
on a ‘Friday’ with short notice. (written in the work contract)

Then an occasional Saturday is understandable, in which case you would have
seen that coming and already given a few days advance notice that it may be
necessary.

If you need them to work on a Sunday, you screwed up and need to apologize to
your client.(network breakdowns are an exception.)

Maybe a company-wide e-mail reaffirming that you occasionally have OT to meet
production demands? Full staff is expected on those days to meet deadlines, but
that you understand that there may be prior obligations that can't be mitigated
on a short notice. Accurately stating that you can't come in due to prior

If they were told the day before that the next day is OT, that is the time for
them to say they have something planned. But faking sick (if indeed they are
faking) is not going to work for me. Just not sure what the proper response
should be so for now I am just grumbling to you guys.

We had a situation where we needed everyone to show up on an off day to push
through a project. Mandatory OT.

Half the crew called in sick. These young folks want more money, here I am
offering them 10 hours of time and a half, and they would rather try to
convince me they are on death’s door?

Not sure where to draw the line. If they are truly sick, OK fine, sorry, hope

Im not saying bad things will happen, but sometimes bad things happen to
people, say a list of names and home addresses slid into my DMs, Sometimes
its happenstance that a list of names in some DMs happen that everybody on
it catches a case or My House Burned down and my cat got pregnant.
sometimes their kneebones separate, sometimes a ditch opens up and their
car falls in, you never know, its a strange world, they might happen to
find that they contracted a broken eye socket or some viral stab
wounds. just sayin, you just never know what tomorrow holds.

also, the guys that showed up, give them double time, youre saving 1.5 on
the mopes who didnt. Call the local portapotty company, tell them you need
50 units that need a hand scrubbing, have them lined up in the parking lot
on Monday with a pile of washclothes. Tell the mopes you got in some
contract work

I'd give extra bonuses to the ones that actually showed up as required.
Reiterate that mandatory OT is required per job hiring/employee

Also make sure you give them sufficient notice if possible in the future

Maybe a company-wide e-mail reaffirming that you occasionally have
OT to meet production demands? Full staff is expected on those days
to meet deadlines, but that you understand that there may be prior
obligations that can't be mitigated on a short notice. Accurately
stating that you can't come in due to prior obligations is highly
appreciated. Continual inability to meet emergency OT requirements
may result in disciplinary action. Abuse of the prior obligation
caveat may result in disciplinary action.

grabbed a shovel and jumped into the ditch with them but I am waiting for a
new hire to show at the office for a meet and greet. And he is a bit vague
as to when he will be here.

I like the idea of extra PTO. I think I will do that.

Yeah if they didn't say anything and figured they'd just give you the
finger by calling in sick or no-show that'd piss me off too. If there's
a conflict then grow a pair and say something, or only work part of the
day or something.

Did the people that did show up have to work harder to make up for the
lack of those that skipped out? I would try to figure out a way to
reward those that do show up. Extra vacation days? Extra PTO? Take the
amount you would have paid everyone who called in sick and divide it up
as a bonus?

Maybe a company-wide e-mail reaffirming that you occasionally have OT to meet
production demands? Full staff is expected on those days to meet deadlines, but
that you understand that there may be prior obligations that can't be mitigated
on a short notice. Accurately stating that you can't come in due to prior
obligations is highly appreciated. Continual inability to meet emergency OT
requirements may result in disciplinary action. Abuse of the prior obligation
caveat may result in disciplinary action.

Not sure. As tight as the job market is I would be reluctant to let them go.
But normally I would let them go. Service industries have mandatory OT at
times. It was made known to them at the time of hire.
