I tried to work with an Orbi setup but the configuration was locked up
against it's own config controls.. i.e. broken. It uses _All_ of the
top and bottom of the 5 Ghz spectrum and no way to move it's usage around.

All kidding aside, and while I am not going to specifically

Having said that, you all should take a closer look at what Kent
Urwiller has been doing with his WISP, using Mimosa Gear. (Micro
Pops w/fat backhauls).

His posts with a great amount of details can be found in the
Mimosa Group and RF Elements group on Facebook.

[AFMUG] OT Help Wanted

2017-06-24 Thread Chuck McCown
Drone company in the Columbia River Gorge needs a good electronics tech. Good
company, good products. If anyone knows someone that lives between The Dalles
and Troutdale have them drop me a note. Full time, benefits etc.

Re: [AFMUG] OT Productivity

2017-06-24 Thread Chuck McCown
I use Gantt when critical paths can be defined in time. It is good for big
projects with contractors etc. But for development work where it largely
depends on me, my to-do list works just fine.

I think I need something like Project to GANT my activities.

Evernote.

Definitely not even close to perfect, but it seems the most usable of
any solution I've tried for this type of stuff, so it ends up being
what I use the most. I'd love to hear someone suggest something else
better though...

All kidding aside, and while I am not going to specifically comment on this
particular story

Having said that, you all should take a closer look at what Kent Urwiller has
been doing with his WISP, using Mimosa Gear. (Micro Pops w/fat backhauls).

His posts with a great amount of details can be found in the Mimosa Group and
RF Elements group on Facebook.

Here is a small snippet from one of his recent posts.. "... Pretty dang amazing
really. We are seeing around 130-150 Mbps on a 40 MHz channel to each client
thanks to 2.3 and C5c. .."

Definitely not even close to perfect, but it seems the most usable of any
solution I've tried for this type of stuff, so it ends up being what I use
the most. I'd love to hear someone suggest something else better though...

"... Pretty dang amazing
really. We are seeing around 130-150 Mbps on a 40 MHz channel to each client
thanks to 2.3 and C5c. .."

Re: [AFMUG] Avoid 'make ready' by using my own poles

2017-06-24 Thread chuck
Back when I was a telco lineman, the Oregon PUC gave us the clearances and they
would actually send out an inspector to measure them once in a while.
We had to cross all roadways at 16 feet. We had to be below the bottom of a
secondary drip loop by 18 inches. Sometimes that was tough to do. I remember
rail road tracks were something like 26 feet. Cannot remember the rest. That
was 38 years ago.

Code is 15'6" above most roads and driveways. It is a bit less over yards, I
can't remember off hand. Obviously the more clearance the better.

I just saw some about that short yesterday with telephone drop cables on
them, so mabe. You also have to consider the terrain changes. Often the road
is slightly elevated for drainage, and the line may be running down hill for
instance. With a 35' pole we can maintain good clearance in most
circumstances, and it's not too expensive.

I need to be 16 feet above state roads. Other circumstances could allow as
low as 14'. So far I've given those numbers a wide margin because I don't want
to assume that the wire won't stretch or have something leaning on it to bring
it down.

What is minimal pole size and cost for a small pole for communications
wire? 25 foot pole? 5 foot in ground and 20 foot above ground? That would get
you roughly 5 feet of sag allowance between poles since I was told 15 feet is
the lowest your wire can be to the road.

Also is there any ROW laws that give a county/municipality the right to
deny you an application to set another row of poles on the opposite side of the
road from electric poles when you obviously could place more wires on the
electric poles?

You can’t force them to use your pole.
Your pole cannot encroach on the clearance zone.

You can always put your own poles in ROW that is clear from other
pole lines.
Across the street is probably fine depending on easements.

You can always go underground for a span or two. That will be less
expensive.

So, our most common make ready issue so far has been old poles that
are relatively short and we can't stay the required distance from the power
equipment and also be far enough above the existing phone line. Sometimes we
can use a standoff or other solutions to avoid the issue, but sometimes the
pole needs to be replaced. It's never less than $5,000, could be as much as
$10,000.

What I'm wondering is this: We can get a new 35' pole for $800. We
can get a new 50' pole for $1500. Is there any reason I couldn't just avoid
make ready expense by setting our own pole instead of using theirs? Even with
guy wires, permit, and easements it's almost guaranteed to be less expensive.
Maybe I would put a 35 footer on the opposite side of the road, for example.
Or maybe we set the new 50 footer right next to theirs and even let them move
onto our pole if they want to. It seems too easy and I'm wondering if there's
a catch I'm not thinking of.

We will likely move from Exchange 2012 to 365. It makes no sense to
self-contain anymore…we have a lot of bandwidth and why worry about the
headaches? We have always sent our email to a scrubbing service before it
arrives at the server.

Office 365 gives each user the full office suite for up-to 5 devices…which is
cool when in my case I have a Mac Desktop at home, MacbookPro for office,
Windows machine for the wife…Windows for kids…you get the picture. Nice thing
is, you get the latest and greatest and no worries about backups. I think you
also get 1TB one-drive account too for syncing/storage.

I just saw some about that short yesterday with telephone drop cables on them,
so mabe. You also have to consider the terrain changes. Often the road is
slightly elevated for drainage, and the line may be running down hill for
instance. With a 35' pole we can maintain good clearance in most
circumstances, and it's not too expensive.

I need to be 16 feet above state roads. Other circumstances could allow as low
as 14'. So far I've given those numbers a wide margin because I don't want to
assume that the wire won't stretch or have something leaning on it to bring it
down.

What is minimal pole size and cost for a small pole for communications wire?
25 foot pole? 5 foot in ground and 20 foot above ground? That would get you
roughly 5 feet of sag allowance between poles since I was told 15 feet is the
lowest your wire can be to the road.

Also is there any ROW laws that give a county/municipality the right to deny
you an application to set another row of poles on the opposite side of the road
from electric poles when you obviously could place more wires on the electric
poles?

You can’t force them to use your pole.
Your pole cannot encroach on the clearance zone.

You can always put your own poles in ROW that is clear from other pole
lines.
Across the street is probably fine depending on easements.

You can always go underground for a span or two. That will be less
expensive.

So, our most common make ready issue so far has been old poles that are
relatively short and we can't stay the required distance from the power
equipment and also be far enough above the existing phone line.

The zone around primary conductors that you have to keep out of. Rule of
thumb is 10 feet, but there are legal specs. Actually secondary too but that
is normally 12-18 inches.

You can’t force them to use your pole.
Your pole cannot encroach on the clearance zone.

You can always put your own poles in ROW that is clear from other pole
lines.
Across the street is probably fine depending on easements.

You can always go underground for a span or two. That will be less
expensive.

Subject: [AFMUG] Avoid 'make ready' by using my own poles

So, our most common make ready issue so far has been old poles that are
relatively short and we can't stay the required distance from the power
equipment and also be far enough above the existing phone line. Sometimes we
can use a standoff or other solutions to avoid the issue, but sometimes the
pole needs to be replaced. It's never less than $5,000, could be as much as
$10,000.

What I'm wondering is this: We can get a new 35' pole for $800. We can
get a new 50' pole for $1500. Is there any reason I couldn't just avoid make
ready expense by setting our own pole instead of using theirs? Even with guy
wires, permit, and easements it's almost guaranteed to be less expensive.
Maybe I would put a 35 footer on the opposite side of the road, for example.
Or maybe we set the new 50 footer right next to theirs and even let them move
onto our pole if they want to. It seems too easy and I'm wondering if there's
a catch I'm not thinking of.

That $0.20 is only going to be in the major markets. There's not much

PalmettoNet may be in Kingston as well. They say they have a POP there, but

they're in Jacksonville, New Bern, Greenville, Wilson, Fayetteville,

Spectrum provides transport to WISPs, sometimes reasonably. Check with FISPA.

We have CenturyLink and Spectrum available for local connection, but would like

Re: [AFMUG] Avoid 'make ready' by using my own poles

2017-06-24 Thread chuck
Many places will define a utility corridor and that generally means you have to
be on one side of the road.
However, historically telco was on one side of the street and power on the
other in many towns. When I first started, we owned all of our own poles and
only attached to power where there was no way around it. Our poles were
generally class 5 35 footers or 30 footers.

Subject: Re: [AFMUG] Avoid 'make ready' by using my own poles

What is minimal pole size and cost for a small pole for communications wire? 25
foot pole?

That will be less

Re: [AFMUG] Avoid 'make ready' by using my own poles

2017-06-24 Thread Kurt Fankhauser
What is minimal pole size and cost for a small pole for communications
wire? 25 foot pole? 5 foot in ground and 20 foot above ground? That would
get you roughly 5 feet of sag allowance between poles since I was told 15
feet is the lowest your wire can be to the road.

Also is there any ROW laws that give a county/municipality the right to
deny you an application to set another row of poles on the opposite side of
the road from electric poles when you obviously could place more wires on
the electric poles?

Re: [AFMUG] PMP450M: is there any indication of "sub-sector"

2017-06-24 Thread Bill Prince
It's essential to know if you want to know if you're filling the entire
coverage area or not, and if you have a too-high population of subs in
any particular area. It would also indicate whether your sector is
properly aimed.

How about doing Protocal Specific UBB??? So 10GB allowance of VPN specific
traffic each month with unlimited everything else? I'm sure this can be

Re: [AFMUG] Mistake: Crimping With PoE Connected?

2017-06-24 Thread Kurt Fankhauser
I just made the same mistake this week myself with one of these passive
injectors that was powering a couple AF5X radios.
http://www.l-com.com/power-over-ethernet-4-port-cat6-passive-gigabit-midspan-injector

I re-crimped the CAT5e a couple times at the top of the tower because I
suspected a bad crimp due to radios not powering up and after a couple
times of crimping the end (while power was applied to the injector) I
plugged the end into one of the AF5X radios and immediately "majic smoke"
started to roll out of the radio's Ethernet port. I think the injector
somehow is shorted internally from crimping the ends while power was
applied and now every radio that I plug into the injectector will loose its
Ethernet port although it will still power the radio.

The very low cost plan I am on appears to have sharepoint included at some
capacity.

I don’t use it though.

I had sharepoint running for a while on my own Exchange server a few years ago.

It ran fine, but I had to run firewalls specific to it to make sure I wasn’t

I don’t know if I’m any better hacking wise with the MS hosted solution, but
probably.
At least I don’t have to worry about all that crap anymore.

[AFMUG] New WISP in NC needs backhaul solution!

2017-06-24 Thread Al Rachide
We are getting ready to go live from a small connection in our office, just
to the local community, using a omni antenna. We will be expanding
throughout three counties in eastern NC. Having read a number of post where
others are claiming rates as low as $0.20 per mbit/sec, we can't get
anything here for less than $2.20 per mbit/sec, PLUS a fixed loop fee of
$750.00 per month per pop. So, how can we find a cheaper backhaul solution
here in the boonies of NC? We have CenturyLink and Spectrum available for
local connection, but would like to know about other options for the actual
internet / backhaul connection. PS: We attended our first WISPA convention
in Memphis and it will not be the last!
