Re: [AFMUG] Mikrotik OSPF

2017-07-05 Thread George Skorup
No, not the L2 MTU. The L3 (IP) MTUs must match on the router interfaces
speaking OSPF.

I have zero experience with SIAE gear, but being a licensed radio, I
imagine it has an integrated ethernet switch. I've seen a fair number of
switches go stupid. If you can run 1500 byte pings across the link with
no loss, then I'd assume both L2 and L3 should work as expected.
However, that doesn't mean something isn't screwing with multicast,
which OSPF obviously needs.

I also recommend only using bug fix release for mikrotik. Also make sure you
have clocks synced to an ntp source on every mikrotik router and that it's
accurate.

Did anything happen recently that could possibly have provoked the
disappearance like a VLAN or other L2/L3 change? Are the neighbors pingable on

Re: [AFMUG] Planet Switches Suck Ass?

2017-07-05 Thread Sterling Jacobson
Ok.

I bought them from Versa, so I'll try that.

I hesitate because I don't have a replacement that isn't also a Planet until
today.

I got in two more Fiberstore switches that are also Chinese interface.
But they are also responsive, and the switch cost the same as the Planet, and
the one we have in production seems to work a lot better.

It also has dual power supplies.

The Planet only has the one.

Also, Vera got back to me and stated their switches were operating outside of
temperature range.
AND they were not supposed to be installed without air flow between them.
In other words, don't place your planet 1U switches in a stack one on top of
another I guess, lol!

I replied and told them that's total BS and the temp is their fault, ambient is
normal and their fan lights never went past the first fan that I ever saw.

I cannot speak to the particular model # you referenced, but we have deployed a
WGSW-48040HP (48-port copper gigabit PoE, used to power a VoIP installation for
a customer site). Hardware-wise it has been fine, but the software was another
story. It had (and still has) many quirks, as well as some severe firmware
bugs when it came to LLDP that prevented the phones from learning the voice
VLAN.

As unimpressed as I was with the quality of the software, the support was
another matter. We were crunched for time as far as the schedule for
installing the switch for the customer went, but rather than start by going
through the hassle of returning the switch and sourcing a different one, I
decided to see what would happen if I opened a ticket with them. I had a
hot-off-the-presses new firmware build that had been made directly in response
to my ticket in my inbox inside of a week. I don't think I've ever before
experienced such a quick turnaround from a vendor in response to a software
defect report.

I am not sure yet if that will be enough to retain my business in the future --
for PoE applications, EdgeSwitches seem to be significantly cheaper per-port
and the software quality is arguably higher, although they also aren't without
their own quirks and problems -- but it certainly hasn't hurt their chances, I
can tell you that.

The disclaimers I'll add is that we bought our switch directly from their main
U.S. distributor, Versa Technologies, and we opened our ticket up directly with
them via their Zendesk (http://vtek.zendesk.com). I don't know if you get the
same treatment if you buy through different channels, but it's worth a shot.

The one issue with half the SFP ports on one particular switch no longer
lighting up sounds like a hardware defect. If it's new I don't know why you
would hesitate either to return it for a refund or for warranty
repair/replacement.

I only have experience with the MGSW-28240F. They're OK and I haven't
had any h/w reliability issues with them. I'm not sure if it's the
language barrier or what, but I pointed out some issues and got nowhere.
Shit is still broken, no updates for months. Since we're planning a move
to GPON for new customers anyway, probably just gonna go with some
shelves w/ line cards for the existing AE customers and pull the Planet
switches.

900 f’n satellites? Jeez, isn’t there some sort of international consortium
that says that’s more than enough?

That’s going to be over 1Tbps capacity network wide?

That should definitely help the digital divide for remote areas.

None of these guys know what’s about to hit them with Viasat 2 and Viasat 3.
Other than the latency for gaming and voice, Viasat 2 can hit up to 1Gbps and
it goes live in January. Viasat 3 will by up by 2019 or 2020 and several times
faster than Viasat 2.

I think it matters what hardware you have, not software version.

We have gotten the same thing a few times. Some are computer controlled,
others pretty simple. I doubt you'll have any issues with it.

Can anyone confirm that Mikrotik Ethernet error counters work in 6.37.1 and
newer software? I'm trying to identify a problem and was surprised to see
all zeros on these counters. These are columns that need to be added "Right
Mouse, show columns" for them to display. I can't say that they ever worked
since I have never tried to use them in the past.

[AFMUG] Text messaging services

2017-07-05 Thread Adair Winter
I'm looking for a service that will allow me to load in lists of numbers to
send text messages to. I'd like to be able to manage the lists from a web
gui or possible integrate with some CRM. I'd like for the users to be able
to unsubscribe from the texts by sending STOP or whatever.

Does anyone have any experience with such a beast?
