Re: [AFMUG] RV park network design

2018-05-31 Thread Larry Smith
We have a 32 foot Jayco travel trailer that we pull
all over the place (mostly central and west Tennessee,
some Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas).

Prices where we have stayed range from $5 with nothing
but a place to park to $41.50 with pad, water, sewage, electric.

There are much more expensive ones, but we don't stay there

[AFMUG] ePMP puzzle

2017-11-27 Thread Larry Smith
Ok, have an ePMP 1000, updated from 3.1 to 3.3
then to 3.4 and problem persists.

Issue is each time you login into the radio and go
to configuration, network, a read triangle pops up
on the right side of the network line and the save
button reds out. Holding the mouse over the save
button says "Invalid elements: Password".

Have changed all passwords (under Configuration, System)
and can find no passwords on the Network tab.

Anyone else seen this or can direct me where to fix it?

Re: [AFMUG] 3.5Ghz future

2017-10-25 Thread Larry Smith
Most likely take more than 3, but what coyotes do is
work as a group. Several will chase the deer for a while,
then the other group catches up and the first group rests.
The deer gets no rest though and eventually they just wear
it down. Once they can break a leg or get a good neck
cut they just wait it out.

About the only thing I will waste a good deer hunt on
is a coyote, shoot them every chance I get...

Re: [AFMUG] Vegas Mass Shooting

2017-10-02 Thread Larry Smith
While I understand your sentiment.
The only people that obey the law are lawful citizens
and people who are going to kill could care less so
any "new" laws are by definition only going to affect
those who are already lawful citizens...

While guns are top of the current FBI list for homicide
weapons, next are knives/cutting instruments,
then clubs, hammers, blunt instruments, next are
personal (hands, feet, etc).

To be honest, more people are killed each year due
to drunk/intoxicated driving than all homicides put together.
How about we totally ban drinking and make a real difference???

2017-05-01 Thread Larry Smith
I love to hunt, and while I understand all the scientific
principles and such, it is hard to sit in a deer stand
and observe all the wonders of nature - how the trees
die off in the fall and come back each spring, how many
different types of grass there are, and yes the variety
of animals and how they all seem to "fit" in nature -
without believing in something greater and bigger than
us feeble humans. So yes, guess it is just hardwired
in many of us to believe in something bigger, better,
smarter so we don't get too much of a big head at
what we have supposedly accomplished...

Re: [AFMUG] Reverse DNS entry

2017-01-13 Thread Larry Smith
Hmmm, if this is under voltbb.com, then it appears that GoDaddy
is your nameserver (domaincontrol.com). Appears pcguys.us
is also served from Godaddy.

There should be a space in your control panel (at Godaddy)
to setup both forward and reverse DNS entries for any of your
IP space. Under DNS for whatever domain you want this to
show up, select the PTR tab, check "include PTR" and
put in the IP address and "name" you want.

Re: [AFMUG] Postpaid vs Prepaid / Bill in Advance?

2016-06-27 Thread Larry Smith
If you do not "pre" bill for service, such as internet access,
there is little to no chance of collection after the fact if
they decide not to pay... We pre-bill for the "next" month
on the 20th, due by the 1st, suspend services on the 6th
for CC, ACH, etc (auto payments) that fail, then suspend
cash, check customers on the 10th.

Our billing system handles this without issue (Freeside).

Check your MTU settings, believe with PPPoE (at least on DSL) it automatically
changes the MTU to 1492 to accomodate the encapsulation. We have had
some we have to drop to 1480 to get to work reliably because otherwise
we end up with loads and loads of fragmented packets (which kicks throughput
way down).

I am wondering if I got a GigE managed switch, could I see some phy data
speeds by looking at its management interface?

Why not just a Mikrotik CCR?

Demand for our GigE surge suppressor has been growing such that I am now
limited by my test station throughput.

Any ideas on how to test a GigE device go-nogo without buying more big
dollar testers (which I currently use)?

It needs to be fast and show speeds in both directions.

Have considered just putting up a GigE switch and plugging the surge
suppressor into two ports and seeing if they light. But that sounds
  pretty
cheap and dirty. Want to see numbers. A laptop talking to another
laptop with iperf may end up being the solution. Not sure if there are
GigE USB NICS so I could do it all on one laptop or not.

  Any other ideas?

Am at the point of willing to pay someone more expreienced than
me to resolve this so I can move forward.

I have quite a few VLANs going to a Cisco 7206VXR and all those
are working fine (even the ones coming through/from mikrotik boxes).
This one is fiber from one tower location to my NOC (about 14 miles)
and currently has three VLANs, two go to my Cisco router and are
working fine, the third (was actually the first vlan on this box) goes
from the tower tik to my noc tik and I cannot seem to get it working

Basic layout is Tower-TIK ethernet to Tower-Fiber-TIK (both CCR)
Fiber to NOC through Nortel 5510 Gig switch, two vlans break out
of the Nortel to the Cisco router, one breaks out to the NOC-Fiber-Tik.

Any suggestions comments are welcome.

My uncle was an electrician and showed me that - on my own house
one day. He said (and I have no idea if true or not) that hammering
a ground rod in the ground changed its potential and therefore it was
no longer a good ground rod.

We installed a new tower, approximately 200ft. from the service panel that

In the past, we had run 10 gauge wire (x3) out to the tower with 110vac.
Voltage drop is relatively negligible, certainly within the bounds of
working properly to drive our 24v charger for the battery array.

I was told, by a grounding expert that all my equipment electrical
grounds need to homerun to a bus bar that ride the ground back to the
service panel directly, that nothing else is acceptable.

AND, and this is the big part... that I needed to seriously upgrade the
200ft. ground wire only that rides back to the panel to something
significantly bigger. How much bigger I am not sure.

So, I figured I would ask the crowd for an answer :)

They have the correct DNS entries in both their router as well as their

Our only issue has been that you cannot QinQ the ONT itself (management
VLAN 83 I think) so you cannot manage one that is attached off someone
else's fiber. We have to add a TIK RB2011 and do the QinQ there. For
those on our fiber they all work great and do just what they are supposed
to do.

Very often, use it weekly if not every other day or so.
Hit rate is about 100% of things that actually exist in my email.
As Adam stated, sometimes get false positives if I do not
specify the search very well (ask for anything that contains radio

Everything (just about) that I have is in folders. And some folders
of folders (EG: This list is under a Maildir folder labeled 0-Lists.
There are currently 32 other folders inside that one (ietf, nanog, cisco-nsp,
etc).

In my case we do a lot of gov (local, county, 911, etc) support and I often
have to go back one, two or even three and four years and remind
them what was discussed and what we agreed to do (or not)...
