2017-12-13 Thread Steve Jones
other than experiencing some really questionable gigabit connectivity
issues and maddening issues with packetflux sync, on POPs i only see rj45
ends valuabled in top end cross connects and radio terminations, everything
else should be punched down to cat5/6 inserts and factory terminated patch
cables
why touch your cabling infrastructure?

Re: [AFMUG] Cable crimpers for RJ-45 work

2017-12-13 Thread Steve Jones
the biggest cause of failure is not maintaining the blades on ez crimpers.
Fresh blades and the ends have zero non ID10T errors (if using the real
connectors and not knock offs)
moisture --- if you have a drop of water in the connector, its not the
connector thats the issue
the brown is normally the first indicator, it catches doesnt fully cleave,
instinct is to pull it off --- you just uncrimped that pin
the next thing is they start beveling --- now moisture can be an issue, but
more than likely that scorch, its cause you took a small surge that arced
or you are directly shorting (the copper likes to hide behind the remaining
insulation

maintain your blades, they chew through blades fast

dont use cable thats too snug on the insulation, it can roll the crimp, but
the garbage cable is probably going to be a problem anyway

Re: [AFMUG] Cable crimpers for RJ-45 work

2017-12-13 Thread Faisal Imtiaz
Jaime,

We have been using Platinum tools crimper for their ez-45 jacks. (last 10 years
or so ? )
Not sure which Klein model you are looking at, I would not be surprised if the
Klein is an oem by Platinum Tools.

In regards to comments about moisture and shorting ... cannot say we have seen
that as a functional/design defect of using ez-rj45 connectors.

Most moisture & water intrusions are due to other issues..
(p.s. there is a valid reason why Mimosa includes a small tube of 'superlube'
with their radios... it works surprising well in keeping the moisture out of
the connector, we have started using it more 'religiously' )

Re: [AFMUG] Cable crimpers for RJ-45 work

2017-12-13 Thread Bill Prince
They are "easy" if you have never done an RJ45 before, and you can
verify the colors easier after insertion. However, they leave the end
open for water & air intrusion. On outdoor connections, we almost always
use gel-filled cable, and when you crimp them properly, they fill the
RJ45 with gel. We like those a lot.

have the 1/4" of untwisted wire you're looking for.  That's pure
speculation though.

I used those when I first started, I am also not a fan. I had all
kinds of problems with getting them to fit the Ethernet port on
Canopy SMs, the release tab didn't want to snap into place. Having
said that, I still have a couple of the Platinum Tools crimpers and
they work fine.

Re: [AFMUG] Cable crimpers for RJ-45 work

2017-12-13 Thread Adam Moffett

I've never used those. Seems like people either love em or hate em.
I imagine it must be easier to maintain the maximum untwist amount. It
seems like you could keep shoving the wires through until you only have
the 1/4" of untwisted wire you're looking for. That's pure speculation
though.

I used those when I first started, I am also not a fan. I had all kinds
of problems with getting them to fit the Ethernet port on Canopy SMs,
the release tab didn't want to snap into place. Having said that, I
still have a couple of the Platinum Tools crimpers and they work fine.
