Re: [AFMUG] VoLTE

2017-01-10 Thread Darin Steffl
I've never had static on a volte call yet. Works very well in our area.

We did have a verizon contractor accidentally cut and remove a few of our
sectors on a shared grain leg site. They were removing their gear and going
to a nearby monopole. Anyway, contractor thought our small sectors were
verizon gear and started removal. I saw network alerts and called grain
elevator and they said verizon was there. Told them to get foreman to stop
ha.

We get there and cables to 3 sectors are cut and 2 sectors are lowered down
already. Me and a tech then spent 4 hours in freezing rain to get things
back to normal.

Sent an invoice to the contractor directly for about $6400 and they paid it
within days. I'm assuming they want to avoid an insurance claim or hit on
their record with verizon if we went above them.

So if a contractor messed with your stuff, be sure you send an invoice to
contractor. More than likely they will pay up.

Log into your Vzw account. It's in there. HD Voice and Advanced Calling
I believe are the two options you want. Both have to be enabled and are
free. Reboot your phone and then go to Wireless & Networks > More >
Cellular Networks > Enhanced 4G LTE Mode. Mine was already on after the
reboot.

NOTE, after you turn these on, your voice mail gets nuked and has to be
set up again. I was using Basic Visual Voicemail. Just had to log in
prior to changing to HD and make sure I "saved" my messages (which saves
them on the local phone storage). You still get Basic Visual VM after
turning on HD. Everything ends up being free. Well, we're on a business
account with unlimited voice/text and 25GB of shared data, so maybe it's
different for other account types. I don't know.

I had a Nexus 4, 5, and 6. I liked all of them, but the Pixel XL that I
got about a month ago blows them out of the water. Good battery life,
excellent performance, ridiculously fast charging, great build quality, and
the interface is getting better with every iteration. The only thing that
I would like is water proofing similar to what the Galaxy S7 has.

Only reason I got the Nexus was because the battery on my "DROID RAZR

2017-01-09 Thread George Skorup
I had an old Moto X 1st gen. Three solid years out of it. Was an awesome
phone until it just started acting stupid a couple weeks ago. Random
reboots, wifi crashing, etc. Had to reboot a couple times just to get it
to charge. Never sat on it, never dropped it. Might have fell off the
console and onto the floor of my truck a time or two, but nothing too bad.

So I was on Amazon post-Christmas deal shopping. I like the Nexus/near
vanilla Android experience. Moto X Pure Edition came up in my search.
Didn't even know it existed. Good reviews (from the people that know WTF
they're talking about). $320 for the 64GB so I bought it. It's not the
latest, greatest, bestest. Been out for a little over a year. Seems to
have all the bugs worked out. Moved my SIM to it and had no problems. It
has an LCD and I do think AMOLED looks better, but whatever. Overall not
bad $ for a decent unlocked phone.

Verizon. It should be updated to 7.1.1 by the end of the month. Where do
you turn this on?

BTW - if we have an internet connection (WiFi or cellular), calling on
WhatsApp works pretty darn good too.

Somebody touches my gear and I find out, they are going to find a lock
on their access or even multiple locks after I talk to a supervisor and
don't hear a million apologies and some kind of compensation...

Big Red just installed these on the same tower we're on in 2016.
Certainly more than 1 cable going up.
They blocked LOS to our Omni + moved our PTP radios. Large shelter
at the bottom also.

Yes when talking to other Verizon users, it sounds excellent!!
Can't wait for them to finish interoperability testing with the
other 3 carriers so HD calls pass to all the major cell networks
instead of just Verizon. They are doing a little testing with AT
but it's not launched yet.

I'm hoping they introduce some VoLTE flip phones soon as well for
the old folks like my Grandpa who refuses to go to a smartphone as
it's too difficult for him.

Verizon has been adding tons of new macros all over the US filling
in coverage gaps and adding capacity but they're all LTE-only so
they're not expanding 1X/3G coverage for the last 1-2 years. So
there's places my Grandma with her smartphone has great 4G and
VoLTE coverage due to new macros in dead spots being filled in but
my Grandpa on his 1X basic flip phone has no service. So they need
to get some updated basic phones out so people can take advantage
of the new 4G-only coverage Verizon has been adding over the last
1-2 years and moving forward.

I've seen Verizon build at least 12 new macro sites in the last
year and at least 8 of them are in current dead or poor coverage
locations. All 4G-only sites with one power/fiber hybrid cable
going to the top and then RRU's on top. It's amazing how clean
these new sites look with only one cable going up instead of 12-16
thick cables as in the past.

For new builds in 2016, I've also seen them stop using the big
shelters and moving to all outdoor cabinets with a generator on
top of a diesel tank. They must save $50k per site almost to get
rid of the big shelters they used to always use.
