No It's not due to iPhone 5S. I'm using iPhone 5S and the app is working fine
with me.
It may be due to poor internet connectivity.

[Ai] query regarding Panasonic P55 Max mobile

2017-08-05 Thread gufran ahmed via Ai
Hi all, hope every thing would be fineout there.

friends I am planning to buy a new mobile, and I have selected
Panasonic P55 Max. it is a good phone under budget segment. The
various YouTubers like sharmaji technical has given positive review as
per our needs, as we have nothing to do with bulky gaims which require
hifi processers like qualcom snapdragon. So I have check the Panasonic
P55 Max’s configuration on flipcart which is given below for your
reference.

•3 GB RAM | 16 GB ROM | Expandable Upto 128 GB
•5.5 inch HD Display
•13MP Rear Camera | 5MP Front Camera
•5000 mAh Li-ion Polymer Battery
•MediaTek MTK6737 Quad Core 1.25 GHz Processor
•Android Nougat 7.0 | Stock Android Version
•1 Year on Handset, 6 Months on Accessories.

and it has good reviews on flipcart too.
now the question is, does MediaTek processers are able to satisfy our
needs? As the above mentioned youtuber has negative view regarding
MediaTek processers. I can understand that the sighted world don’t
live without games, but I believe that small games can be run on this
device. But I already mentioned that we don’t need gaims.
performance is our need.
The second question is, does Panasonic mobiles are accessible?
as we have large no. of motorola users.
Please let me know. Your reply is awaited.
Regards Gufran ahmed.

Re: [Ai] Question about dealing with parents having a regressive view about the capabilities of the disabled

2017-08-05 Thread Shireen Irani via Ai
hi,

by 'execute and then inform', i meant that you delay the informing for
as long as possible, based on your subjective situation. for me, it
was possible to leave the house when my parents were not watching, and
then inform them that I'm going alone. after some point their grip
became even looser and I could tell them after i returned home, that I
had been alone. but of course that will vary from case to case. if you
don't wish to be too radical, just delay the information until you
absolutely can't.

another thing you could try, is to let them accompany you, but from a
distance. without physically helping you for a few days in places
where you're absolutely confident of facing no issues. you could tell
them that coming with you is their desire, not yours, and if they wish
to continue doing so, they can do it at a distance, because you need
to learn to navigate on your own. so no physical contact, no
conversation.  and this way, both of you can have your way. and you
can hope that after sometime they'd realise the pointlessness of such
a commute every day.

I know all these sound drastic and a bit unreasonable even. but I'm
only sharing them because all of these have worked for me. that may be
an exception. but putting these out there does no harm. apologies if
none of them sound doable.
but thanx all the same, for raising the question, will keep thinking.
Shireen.

Cannot understand what you mean by Kindle serial number. What you need to
register Kindle app of PC to your kindle account is your mail ID or phone
number associated with your amazon account and the amazon password. You
could try logging in to this account on amazon web site and use forgot
password feature to re-set your account password.

Use this changed password on the kindle for PC application to get access to
the books that you have purchased from Amazon Kindle.

Thanks

Hi all,

There was a discussion on using Kindle for PC on this list a while ago. This
happened when the list was on the old domain. The new list archives don't
however seem to have any of these messages.

I use Kindle for PC and read books on the computer. Is it possible to locate
the Kindle serial number on the PC, if the account is not associated with
any Kindle device?

Many thanks.

[Ai] DAISY Audio of audio described films

2017-08-05 Thread Dipendra Manocha via Ai
Dear all

Saksham is introducing yet another feature to improve availability and
accessibility of its offerings. We have been bringing out audio described
films for long now. To increase its availability and ease of use, these
audio described films are now available from Sugamya Pustakalaya as DAISY
Audio books.

To begin with this offering we have uploaded below 10 audio described films
to Sugamya Pustakalaya:

1 Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
2 Barfi
3 Dangal
4 Gandhi
5 Hanuman
6 Munna Bhai MBBS
7 P K
8 Three Idiots
9 Black
10 Halo

It is so good to have them on the DAISY player or the DAISY player app on
phone and computer with auto resume and navigation feature. It was quite an
enjoyable experience to listen to them as a DAISY audio book. I am sure you
would enjoy tem as much.

Wishing you happy movie listening.

Dipendra

[Ai] Kindle for PC

2017-08-05 Thread Geetha Shamanna via Ai
Hi all,

There was a discussion on using Kindle for PC on this list a while ago. This
happened when the list was on the old domain. The new list archives don't
however seem to have any of these messages.

I use Kindle for PC and read books on the computer. Is it possible to locate
the Kindle serial number on the PC, if the account is not associated with any
Kindle device?

Many thanks.

Re: [Ai] Question about dealing with parents having a regressive view about the capabilities of the disabled

2017-08-05 Thread Kanchan Pamnani via Ai
Rahul,
You cannot execute and then inform if you want to travel.
Plan well without informing your parents. Only inform them when you are
absolutely sure.
Your words should be that "I am going to x place with ABC on Date by flight
or train". Don't ask them just matter of fact tell them. Don't ask for
money. This trip you have to do with your saved finances.
It is best to give them full details when you tell them. Make a small
itenary - Date of travel, how, from where to where.
Where are you staying and the phone no of the place with address. This may
sound silly in the days of mobile when they can reach you directly. However
it helps them calm down because there will be many times you will not pick
up your mobile.
I had a loving father but a very concerned one. So I dealt with him
properly. I gave him the full information and had answers for everything he
may have asked me. My dad was a lawyer and you know and I knew how many
questions I had to answer. However I went for everything I wanted
to-including holidays with friends. It helps if your folks know your
friends. I always invited my friends home so there was a feeling of trust.
Also I must tell you that until my Dad was alive I got a call every night
even when I went to Delhi for one night. He did not care what I was doing so
I could have been in my hotel room or at a bar. He just wanted to hear my
voice at 10pm before he fell asleep. I used to get irritated because I would
think what if something happened to me at 11pm and he could not take care of
me. Once I was in Connought Place with 2 friends both sighted. Both my age.
Arun was married and in fact a grandfather. He too got a call from his
father while we were having dinner. Ayesha is a Senior Journalist and lives
in Delhi. She too got a call from her mother. So calm down parents will be
parents.
Don't do something stupid because then they will hold it over your head
forever.
A lot of people on this group drink extensively. Its not really a nice scene
when you have a drunk blind person who needs help. Word does reach parents.
The last thing I would suggest is try to be as independent as possible.
Handle your packing personally and don't ask for help when you are dealing
with your personal things.
Assert yourself but do it maturely.

Thanks again.
Geetha, I agree with you that absolute independence is undesirable, but what
we are talking here about is reasonable independence. When offered the
possibility of travelling with a friend, the parent says that friends are
likely to abandon you in case any problem arises. Only family members or
servants can be trusted.
When asked to seek advice and support from orgs like Enable India, the
parent says that those support systems exist for those who cannot afford
personal servants. They are of no use to someone who can afford personal
helpers.

The approach outlined by Shireen, though difficult, then remains the only
solution. Shireen, if one wants to travel alone/with a friend, and one is
living with one parent who will inform the unreasonable parent about
everything, how can one adopt the strategy of executing and then informing?

Best,
Rahul

Re: [Ai] accessible help for booking OLA cab/Auto

2017-08-05 Thread Sunil Sangtani. via Ai
Hi there,
Adding to the info provided:
You can also book Uber/Ola cabs threw google maps.
In case of Ola, you must have the app installed and signed in in your phone.
Best way is to open google maps, enter the destination where you wish
to travel by typing or speaking, Dubble tap on the place that comes up
in search results to choose, and then select “direction”.
Swipe a little and tap on ride services tab. Once you do this, you
will get options to book uber and Ola.
Booking uber is pretty simple and strait forward, in case of Ola, the
google maps opens the Ola app with the pickup and drop locations
filled for you.
You need to choose the type of the cab you wish to use, E.G, micro,
prime and mini etc.
These options are present in the bottom area of the screen. Tapping on
these your screen reader won’t return any feedback but if you have
screen click sounds enable, you can be sure if you have heard it.
After selecting the type of cab, press ride now button. And.
You can see the fare details of the private or shared cab and apply
promo code before confirming your ride.
Ixigo cab is another alternative that gives you the ability to book
and compare many cabs from a single platform.
The app seems fairly accessible.

Re: [Ai] Question about dealing with parents having a regressive view about the capabilities of the disabled

2017-08-05 Thread Shireen Irani via Ai
hi Rahul,

most of what i wish to say has been said already, but I'd like to
reiterate a couple of things that i think are imperative, regardless
of the temporary discomfort they may cause in the relationship.

as an adult, whether disabled or not, 1 needs to put one's foot down,
and have the free will to decide one's own actions with total
responsibility for them. parents often find that difficult to accept,
partly for control, and partly because of their fear of being of no
need to the child any more. so if there's no room for a calm
conversation, one can make one's decisions and break it to them
immediately before, or after you start executing it. even the language
you use needs to be assertive and firm, reassuring them that you do
love and respect them, but these are a few things that you will not
allow them to control, because they are now yours to take charge of.
this is also when you ask them: what they think you will do, once
they're not around any more to protect you from the big bad world. we
know of countless stories of parents who threaten to harm themselves
in cases of their children marrying against the parents wishes, but
after a few months it all defuses and the family is 1 again. so
particularly with emotional blackmail, I know it sounds unpleasant,
but it is best to assert, that you will not be deterred by any such
threats.
the way to balance things out could be to show them that you'd love
their intervention in certain areas, but not in a few others.

also, it really does help even if in tiny ways, for them to see other
blind people moving around more independently. so wherever possible,
do invite a friend over, introduce them to your parents, and then
perhaps spontaneously decide to venture out on your own, the 2 of you,
without opportunity for any further discussion on the matter.
finally, I think financial independence, and your ability to manage
your own finances without their help, and also contributing towards
the running of the house, usually goes a long way as a sign of your
independent adulthood. if you can politely deny any1 else's help/
control in financial matters, and then prove your efficiency with wise
money management, then it becomesrelatively easier to assert your
independence in other areas.
of course your own confidence and ability is paramount before you take
such steps.

what I'd emphasise the most in all this is, do not give in to
emotional blackmail!! just do not.
prepare yourself for some temporary strain, and look forward to a
healthier and more meaningful future with your family.

best,

Shireen.

Re: [Ai] Question about dealing with parents having a regressive view about the capabilities of the disabled

2017-08-05 Thread Alok Kaushik via Ai
Hi Rahul,
Whether we observe closed mindedness, confrontational approach, or
insistence on having an escort, underlying thought process for all of them is
still the same, which is the insecurity of the parents themselves. There is
no assumption or expectation that parents would or should definitely
understand our perspective. It is only to recognize that the main area to be
worked on is outside ourselves, which makes it even more tricky. What can help
alleviate would be very context specific. What I am suggesting is not to
expect complete understanding of one's perspective, or quick transformation.
It is going to be work in progress for a while. Carrying any discontent
within would not be healthy for the relationship. One needs to find balance
between the value of the relationship and assertiveness for independence.

Thanks.
Alok

Thanks, Alok. I agree that the anxiety and fear of the parent here is divorced
from the actual capabilities of the disabled person.
Such blind resistance to accepting the proposition that the blind person has
to be given space to grow and make their own mistakes is what creates an
impasse.
If a blind adult is told that they will always need an escort, but the only
difference will be that the escort will be their wife instead of their mother
in future, that reflects the parent's absolute failure to understand the other
person's perspective.

I think the suggestions that you have offered are very helpful.
However, they nonetheless presuppose that the parent is willing to engage in a
calm conversation with a semi open mind. The fundamental problem here is that
that also is not true most of the time.
The disabled person is told that the parent will start stepping back when the
disabled person acquires the requisite independence. When asked to outline the
criteria based on which the parent will be able to say that the child has
reached that level, the parent becomes confrontational and states that the
disabled person has not seen the darker side of the world yet.

Best,
Rahul
