It helps me much! But sometimes it also make me mad. One of the problem is its auto correction function. I really suggest to set the undo function into multiple steps when auto correction is involved, and the auto correction step MUST happen the latest. The situation is as follows: In Writer, I enter a URL and press enter to start a new line. The URL is automatically changed into a hyperlink. However I don't want it, I would like the URL be plain text. Then I press ctrl-Z. The hyperlink disappears but the new line is also deleted!! I press enter again, the hyperlink appear again. I cannot kill the hyperlink only without killing my precious new line!! The situation is worse in Calc. I typed "IT..." in a cell. As long as I leave the sell, the initial "IT", standing for Infomation Technology, deterministically become "It". I didn't find how to stop it without turning off the auto correction. There could be many other similar cases. **NOTE** This phenomenon happens when "IT" is immediately followed by Asian characters. If "IT" is followed by a space, it does not change. So, what I seriously suggest is to enable the Undo command to remove effect of the auto correction ONLY WITHOUT removing the work that triggered the auto correction. When using the HYPERLINK() worksheet function to link to a document on the web,
where the url contains a ".html" file extension, the document attempts to open
in Writer rather than in the specified web browser (Firefox, in my case - I'm
running Ubuntu Jaunty, 9.04).
For example, put this equation in a cell and then click the link:
HYPERLINK("http://www.freepatentsonline.com/6123456.html";)
Mis-typing the link by including either one or three forward slashes actually
solves the problem, but this is counter-intuitive, since the url looks wrong:
HYPERLINK("http:/www.freepatentsonline.com/6123456.html")
or
HYPERLINK("http:///www.freepatentsonline.com/6123456.html";)
The same error occurs (and the same work-arounds work) for hyperlinks created
using the "Create Hyperlink" dialog box.

When, from inside one of the subdocuments, I try to insert a reference to a heading in another subdocument, only the headings for the current subdocument show up! When the document was flat all the references for the document showed up in the insert other fields dialog. (When the document was flat, it took 6 minutes to do an autosave, which is why I broke up the document.) ALL of the references for the main document should show up in the dialog for inserting cross-references. There is a hack shown at http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/OOo3_User_Guides/Writer_Guide/Cross-referencing_between_subdocuments which is not acceptable. First of all, it's a work-around for the lack of functionality that's available for a flat document and within a subdocument. Second of all, it's tedious and error-prone. Thirdly, the same user interface should be available whether a reference is being made within a subdocument or across subdocuments in a book. In both cases, I used truss to log system call activity, i.e. "truss -p $pid -o $outfile". The two files are: soffice-tmpfs.truss, soffice-smbfs.truss Both were edited to remove all but the relevant section. Comparing the two truss outputs, we can see that StarOffice is trying to mmap(2) a file in the smbfs mount point, which returns ENOSYS because smbfs(7fs) does not support mmap. One might be tempted to close this as a duplicate of CR 6565851 [mmap support for CIFS client (and use page cache)] but this IS arguably the fault of OpenOffice. Here's why: mmap(2) system call can and sometimes does return ENOSYS, both in smbfs and other file systems, and applications are expected to fall back to use of read/write instead. Unfortunately, many applications assume mmap(2) can be used on all files in all filesystems and don't bother to implement any fallback path for cases where mmap is not supported. OpenOffice is not the first to fail here. Many GNOME applications also incorrectly assume mmap always works.
