[Alpine-l] Terrestrial Orchids in The International Rock Gardener

2015-08-05 Thread Cliff Booker
Hi folks,

A contribution from an 'alpine' enthusiast.

We regularly hike in the alpine zone of a number of mountain ranges. Whilst we
are fortunate to see gentians, saxifrages, androsaces, thlaspis, primulas,
soldanellas and all manner of beautiful montane species in these stunning
locations, we also see countless species of hardy orchids inhabiting these
upland meadows and boulder fields - why should these 'hardy' low-growing
perennials be classified as something other than 'alpine' species? Surely
they have more claim to this label than many of the less hardy, less 'alpine'
species now being grown in troughs, screes, rock gardens and alpine houses?

Kindest regards to all,

Cliff Booker

Many thanks for the very kind words about Linum pubescens, Jane.
It really is a glorious little flower, but a complete thug in it's natural

An annual that has spread into every possible location, I fear it would take
over completely in the cosseted confines of a garden.

 Happy New Year!

The good news is we made it through another year, albeit a crazier one than
normal, so less ‘free’ time and fewer pictures taken. The bad news is that
the virus introduced here by Panayoti Kelaidis 6 or 7 years ago has continued
to spread. 5 areas of the garden have now been infected, meaning that they
have had to be turned over to the cultivation of hardy cacti, agaves,
succulents and other ‘xeric’ plants. Actually, I had grown weary of doing
battle with various aril and Juno irises so it really wasn’t that hard a
decision to turn their quarters over to the expanding collection of cacti.
Despite their beauty the irises took up a lot of real estate, and were
rewarding for a very fleeting period every year. Their homes were tailor
made for the cacti, which not only have spectacular flowers, they offer
year-round interest with their amazing forms and spines of many shapes and
colors. For a few pictures see http://tinyurl.com/bbx9asu and
http://tinyurl.com/bfdrv3v. Perfect drainage and dryness at the roots in
winter is at least as important as protection from the cold. Three of the
‘cactus patches’ are unprotected year-round; the one in front of the porch
has 8’ x 4’ polycarbonate covers from early December to the end of February,
and the long bed down the south side of the house has polycarbonate covers
over the same period, and a wrapping of frost blanket during January and
February. The blanket provides about 10F of protection and really works,
providing a home for the more borderline temperature hardy plants. There are
hundreds of species and forms/selections that will grow very happily in these
conditions, including many that I doubt have ever been seriously attempted in
this region. They are not trouble free (some die), they have their own likes
and dislikes that need learning, and they certainly fight back, but they are
so rewarding. Best of all, you can only get one or two rare Oncocyclus
irises for a hundred dollars but you can get about 20 cacti! I’ve also
started growing a number from seed, and that is also fun once you learn a few
tricks, including how not to sunburn them. Other treasures, such as
Asphodelus acaulis, love the same conditions and have been outside without
protection for 3 years now (http://tinyurl.com/acawvlf). Nananthus
transvaalensis is one of my favorite succulents (http://tinyurl.com/aqtlyyb).

Superb cactus and succulent suppliers include Beaver Creek Greenhouses (Roger
 Barlow; http://www.rockgardenplants.com), Miles’ to Go
 (http://www.miles2go.com/), Sunscapes (Bill Adams; http://www.sunscapes.net/)
and Mesa Garden (www.mesagarden.com/). High Country Gardens was also great

Alpine-L Image Note (3539) 2-shows Miniature garden close-up

From: Cliff Booker

Name: 2-shows Miniature garden close-up
Note: Firstly, please let me clear something up straight away,
though I have (in the past) created a number of miniature gardens for
exhibition at AGS Shows, these two examples illustrated here are not my
creations!!!
There are a small number of exhibitors who take their creations to the national
shows and the same mini-gardens appear at quite a number of events.
They are all semi-permanent plantings (please see my full response to Michael's
query above). Plants establish themselves better if they are young and tiny.
Holes are drilled in the tufa and the bare (washed) roots are introduced at the
same time as a modicum of gritty, sandy compost.

I have searched the files and discovered these three links that will illustrate
many other gardens and how they were created. There are at least three pages
of information on each of these links courtesy of the SRGC and the AGS.

I hope these will assist all you budding miniature gardeners?

Kind regards to you all,

Cliff Booker

2012-10-21 Thread CLIFF BOOKER
A lovely instant trough, Barbara - well done. Not, of course, a miniature
garden in the true sense, as the intention was temporary and instant - the very
best miniature gardens need to develop and mature to create the desired effect.
They are more akin to bonsai gardens and I often think that small ancient
trees, moss and even minuscule fungi could be used in these container enclosed
gems.
Kindest regards,

[Alpine-l] Miniature Garden

2012-10-21 Thread CLIFF BOOKER
Hi Shirley,
The little pink plant is another androsace, but I can't say for certain which
one. The illustrated tufa is probably built up with four or five long thin
pieces that are jammed down into the pot and wedged with slivers of rock ...
this construction is the most important part of the garden. I know that some
people use cement to hold the tufa in place, but always under the level of the
compost - weight is obviously a consideration. Planting is usually done once
the construction is finished (drilling and establishment of tiny plants is
quite easy when the base is rigid and solid).
Hope these examples enthuse you all to create mini-gardens of your own. Please
remember to post images of your creations on these pages.
Cheers,
Cliff

On the new site you will find access to all the features of the old site and

 hope,
do justice to the work of that great plant hunter. We are grateful to Jenny

to Jim's friend and archivist, David Stephens, for their help and support in
 this project.

There is LOTS more still to come on the new site - we hope that it will

Our main recommendation for viewing the new site is NOT to use Internet

It simply does not support the features we have at srgc.net

Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, and Safari, (for those with MACS) are all
 capable of

Please do not attempt to register on the new site.
It has been disabled and is pointless right now in any case as it will not

We hope we have got most things tested and so on, but you will all doubtless
 let us know
 what you think!

Re: [Alpine-l] Rock Garden Designer

2012-07-18 Thread CLIFF BOOKER
Hi Shirley,
I am unaware of the predominant landscape features of MN Landscape Arboretum
(natural hills, plains, water features, etc.), but one of the features that
delight me in the Dolomites are the large basins that feature within the
plateaus and screes; rocky dips that shelter plants from the very strong winds
and provide shade and moisture in such barren areas. Rock gardens usually rise
from their surroundings - it would be refreshing to come across a garden
feature that one can only admire fully from it's rim.
Kindest regards,
Cliff

 Hi,
I belong to the MN Chapter of NARGS. I have been requested by Dr.
Snyder, the director of the University of MN Landscape Arboretum to help
him find a person with experience in designing a rock garden. I have been
part of a crew of our members who care for the rock garden at the
arboretum. It is not in a good location as 3/4 of the garden is shaded by
a large tree. Dr. Snyder is new to MN. having come from California. There
are plans for additional expansions to the arboretum. He sees the need for
a new rock garden in a better location. He would like a designer with
credentials which would help get the design approved by the U.of M. He
would like it to be a very attractive design (perhaps with additional
features- ie. water, dry bed ??) as if once approved he would bring it to
persons who would consider funding it. I have asked some members of NARGS
but have not gotten any names of possibilities. I am now putting it to
 members of Alpine -L.
