I just ordered a MPU-9250 evaluation board from invensense; that's a newer part that includes a 3-axis compass along with the 3-axis accel and gyro sensors. We'll probably switch to that for TeleMega v3.0 and EasyMega v3.0. -- -keith signature.asc Description: PGP signature ___ altusmetrum mailing list altusmetrum@lists.gag.com http://lists.gag.com/mailman/listinfo/altusmetrum

The current firmware doesn't really do anything interesting with this data, other than log it for post-flight analysis. If you hacked up the firmware, you could disable this part and report back bogus values instead. Looks like we'll have to update EasyMega and TeleMega to some other mag sensor in the near future. Apparently the CSR that I talked to didn't figure that out. Nonetheless, it sounds like whatever shipment they get in Sept will be the last one. Digikey is scheduled to have them in stock in September. http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/honeywell-microelectronics-precision-sensors/HMC5883L-TR/342-1082-6-ND/2507854 On Mon, May 2, 2016 at 3:58 PM Steven Sanerwrote: > Last month there was a thread on this list regarding the home > construction of a TeleMega. Aliexpress might be a good way to find some parts that are now EOL. I have had to do this once or twice in the past. Octopart might result in a few US vendors with some residual stock or even suggest the replacement part. (Some digging suggests that the HM5983 might be a replacement; more reading required for a definitive answer.) [altusmetrum] HMC5883L
Last month there was a thread on this list regarding the home construction of a TeleMega. I have recently gained access to some slightly more advanced tools through a local Makerspace and I decided that I'd be interested in giving this a go as well. However, I decided that I would try my hand at an EasyMega first, so as to not have to deal quite so much with the RF stuff on the first try. Also, I have use for one. I am finding a problem, however with the HMC5883L 3-axis compass. Digikey doesn't have any in stock and in contacting them today, they tell me it is an obsolete part and won't be restocked. I've also found that a few other vendors that I am familiar with don't have any either. So I'm wondering what the thought is on this. Is there a replacement that would work on the current board layout and firmware? Do you know of a source that still has some of these parts? Or do you have any other suggestions? Now I do find a bunch of modules built for things like Arduinos and such that have these chips on board. Perhaps the solution is to get one of those and try to steal the chip. Some are even silly cheap on ebay... Steve -- -- Steven SanerKD0IJP Andover, Kansas USA ___ altusmetrum mailing list altusmetrum@lists.gag.com http://lists.gag.com/mailman/listinfo/altusmetrum
