Re: [android-developers] [2011-09-14 09:10:06 - Emulator] emulator: ERROR: the user data image is used by another emulator. aborting

2011-09-14 Thread androidhub trainer
If with emulator restart it doesn't work, then do the following:

Go to .android folder from Users folder. Once you are in .android go to avd
folder. Select the emulator, which you are using. Inside that folder you
will see two folders:
cache.img.lock and userdata-qemu.img.lock. Delete both these folders and
then just restart the emulator.

Thanks

[android-developers] Multi apk normal to xlarge

2011-09-14 Thread Droid
I am trying to specify one apk for normal and another for large
layouts. But market always seems to specify small to xlarge and normal
to xlarge. I have no xlarge or large folders and manifest defines
xlarge and large as false.

What am I doing wrong or is this expected behavior?

occurs. A black screen is shown instead of the GUI.

The app still works, because the application menu is shown when

is only
black. I have tried almost everything to fix this, I have
checked that
the thread is running and that no instance of any object (like

   Do you call GLSurfaceView.resume() from Activity.resume() ?

   By the same token you should be calling GLSurfaceView.pause() in
   the
   right moment of your activity lifecycle.

[android-developers] The item you were attempting to purchase could not be found. problem

2011-09-14 Thread monty
Hi All,
  I have created multiple apks(two :phone and tablet) for an app i
have developed called Yoga for Positive Health and published both
the apks in Market.
  After publishing ,I purchased the apk for phone and it worked
fine(although initially i had problems so i updated the apk
again).Well the problem is for the apk for tablet .I am using Motorola
Zoom and Acer Iconia.When i search for the app in Market on tablet ,i
was able to download it once .Next time when i logged in with
different emal id and credentials it showed me apk size 0 and there
is no version name.Although i have specified version name as 1.1.2 and
size is 40 MB.When i click Buy it says The item you were attempting
to purchase could not be found.

Is this a Market issue or is it because of multiple apks i am
using .Could some1 please give a solution .I have tried all possible
ways .I even updated the apk with new version but still the same
problem.

Regards
Monty

[android-developers] Re: Android Alarm application

2011-09-14 Thread mot12
Your questions are really basic. A little study of the Android SDK and
you should be able to answer these questions yourself. Yes, probably a
sqlite db is the appropriate thing to do if you want to allow for an
unlimited amount of alarms. And yes, the alarm manager is the way to
go.

And guess what, somebody really nice has already written the entire
application for you. The source code for the stock alarm clock of
Android is available for you to study. Create a project, modify it,
understand it. Then ask very specific questions after you spent a lot
of time with this project. Your question sounds a bit like I want to
write an alarm clock. How do I do it? You will not get much help if
you ask like this.

And, if the layout is actually the same, you would only need
res/drawable-*dpi/ for whichever densities you are supporting, with
their respective images sized appropriately so they show up at the

There's not much in the way for sample code for this scenario, IIRC.

Also why dont you use SQLiteDatabaseHelper which is recommended way of

  Having a server side presence for us for right now is overkill. So,
  outside of the proguard obfuscation (which we are doing), are there

 If you don't need to authenticate people who bought an item using IAB,
 and let them download additional contents, a server might be overkill.
 You can split the key and scramble it somehow so it's not an obvious
 string resource if you are worried about people replacing it. However,
 if someone wants to crack your app, they are far more likely to modify
 the bytecode to bypass any checking routines you have, rather than
 trying to replace the key and fool signature checking.

 The Google IO 'Evading Pirates and Stopping Vampires' presentation
 has some tips on further obfuscation and integrity checking. It boils
 down to: use native code and server-side code. You decide how far
 you need to go.

[android-developers] Re: warning unregistering sensor listener

2011-09-14 Thread Latimerius
Okay, never mind, it likely doesn't matter. According to Google search the
warnings do come up in people's logs, perhaps even fairly often, but don't
seem to be related to any perceived problem. Thanks anyway.

On Mon, Sep 12, 2011 at 3:40 PM, Latimerius l4t1m3r...@googlemail.comwrote:

 Hello,

 I'm slightly worried about SensorService warnings I sometimes get when I
 call SensorManager.unregisterListener(). They look like this:

 W/SensorService(   88): listener with binder
 android.os.BinderProxy@4670c9f0, doesn't exist (sensor=BMA150 3-axis
 Accelerometer, id=0)
 W/SensorService(   88): listener with binder
 android.os.BinderProxy@46804af0, doesn't exist (sensor=AK8973 3-axis
 Magnetic field sensor, id=1)

 I googled for the parts of the message that don't vary but pretty much the
 only relevant hit I got was the SensorService source. It says in a comment
 that this usually happens if registration fails but the client doesn't
 handle the failure properly and still tries to unregister later on.

 Well I'm pretty sure that's not my case - I do check the registerListener()
 return value and take note if something goes wrong. However, it never seems
 to go wrong, and I'm still getting the warnings. On top of that, they don't
 come up reliably and so far I've been unable to see a pattern.

 I also checked my code for inadvertent double unregistration but that
 doesn't seem to be the case, either.

 Has anyone got this too and dealt with this successfully? I most certainly
 don't want to mess up my sensor listener unregistration and drain people's
 batteries ...

 Thanks in advance!

That is what I thought initially, simply put the higher res graphics

  res/layout-sw600dp/main_activity.xml   # For 3.2 and up tablets

 If the layout is actually the same for all three of these, you don't
 need anything more than res/layout/main_activity.xml.

 And, if the layout is actually the same, you would only need
 res/drawable-*dpi/ for whichever densities you are supporting, with
 their respective images sized appropriately so they show up at the
 desired physical size (e.g., a 32px-by-32px icon in -mdpi might have a
 24px-by-24px in -ldpi, a 48px-by-48px in -hdpi, and a 64px-by-64px in
 -xhdpi).

[android-developers] Re: word wrapping

2011-09-14 Thread AndyD
Sure, there are lots of useful settings. I use them so I don't waste
time prettying up my code by hand. Just set up the wrapping
preferences the way you like, type away (e.g. a long comment that goes
off to column 300), and hit Ctrl-S to apply the preferences.

Go to Window-Preferences, then Java-Code Style-Formatter.  Create a
new profile (or use a built-in one), then click Edit. Most of the
settings you're looking for are in the Line Wrapping tab, but there
are a few more useful ones in the Comments tab.

Re: [android-developers] Dialog dismiss()

2011-09-14 Thread Emanuel Moecklin
I ran into these issues too and the only solution I found so far that works
in any case (rotation, home button restart activity, sliding out keyboard,
killing an app etc.) is using an AsyncTask.
I'm not a big fan of AsyncTasks normally but to show and dismiss a
ProgressDialog this seems to be a fair solution:

private ProgressDialog progressDialog;

AsyncTaskVoid, Void, Void() {
@Override
protected void onPreExecute() {
progressDialog = new ProgressDialog(MyActivity.this);
// some progressDialog setter calls
progressDialog.show();
}
@Override
protected Void doInBackground(Void... params) {
// do your background stuff
}
@Override
protected void onPostExecute(Void result) {
dismissProgressDialog();
}
}.execute();

private void dismissProgressDialog() {
try {
progressDialog.dismiss();
}
catch (Exception e) {}
}

@Override
protected void onDestroy() {
super.onDestroy();
dismissProgressDialog();
}

No fiddling around with static variables which could cause problems in a
multithreaded environment, no worries about the activity's lifecycle, no
worries about configuration changes.
Honestly I don't understand why showing and dismissing a ProgressDialog is
such a hassle. I would expect the framework do handle this for us
transparently.
And I don't think it's the price we have to pay for having a real
multithreaded environment.

Of course it get's slightly more difficult if the task can be cancelled or
if you want to keep the background task running and show the progress dialog
whenever the ui is shown.
For long lasting tasks like initializing a large database upon first start
of an app or a file download I recommend using a Service and using the
activity as gui to show the Service's progress.
I elaborated on that solution in this thread: http://bit.ly/qim7ov (last
post).

Re: [android-developers] Dialog dismiss()

2011-09-14 Thread Streets Of Boston
I found the use of activities (with a Theme.Dialog or such theme) much
easier and prefer it over the use of dialogs. And usually, i put
busy-indicators such as indeterminate progress-bars on the screen it self
(the right top corner of the screen or as a 'full' screen overlay). This
prevents me from dealing with (Alert)Dialogs. :)

[android-developers] simple XML attribute inheritance question

2011-09-14 Thread John Goche
Hello,

I am having trouble using the API documents. On the page:

http://developer.android.com/reference/android/widget/CheckBox.html

we find the following:

TextView xmlns:android=http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android;
android:layout_width=fill_parent
android:layout_height=fill_parent
android:padding=10dp
android:textSize=16sp
/TextView

but then under Summary when I click on the headings under
Inherited XML Attributes I see no android:layout_height. Instead
I find an entry for this attribute under:

http://developer.android.com/reference/android/view/ViewGroup.LayoutParams.html

but android.widget.CheckBox does not inherit from ViewGroup.LayoutParams.

But I thought that if it uses the android:layout_height attribute then it
should.

Where am I going wrong with my reasoning. Do I need to learn more about
XML Schema. Can someone please explain to me what is happening here?

Thanks,

John Goche

But after closed, I do try to init the app from my phone, and it says This
application is not installed on the phone.
Someone knows why?
Thanks,

[android-developers] Abusing system privileges?

2011-09-14 Thread Peter Knego
It seems that it's possible to acquire system privileges by adding

android:sharedUserId=android.uid.system

to manifest and using platform.pk8 platform.x509.pem from android
GIT to sign the app. The claim is here:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7419924/android-system-apis

Is this indeed possible?
Doesn't this defeat the purpose of system apps, i.e. apps that only
Google or OEMs can provide?
I suppose this app can not be distributed via Market, right?
What's Googles official take on this practice?

Thanks,
Peter Knego

[android-developers] Passing a Bundle with a Parcelable object from Monkeyrunner

2011-09-14 Thread Case B
Hello,

I'm trying to pass a Parcelable object in my extras when starting an
activity in Monkeyrunner. The area in the script looks like this

user = FbUser()
extraDic = {}
extraDic['userName'] = 'Test'
extraDic['userId'] = 'me'
extraDic['userInfo'] = user
d.startActivity(extras=extraDic, component=runComponent +
postActivity)

FbUser is the object in my java project that implements Parcelable.
The bin of the project has been properly added to the sys.path in the
Jython Monkeyrunner script. When I debug the script, it creates the
FbUser object correctly, however, when I print out the extras in
LogCat, the 'userInfo' extra is missing... Does anyone know why this
might be?

[android-developers] Music beta app in HoneyComb source available?

2011-09-14 Thread Sandy
Hi All,

One thing I really like about Music beta is the way it displays
multiple albums by Artist, and multiple artists by Genre. It will
“stack” all of the album art one on top of another, so you can view
multiple albums or artists at the same time. Also, on selecting a
genre, it arranges the cards and displays the items in a neat
animation. Similarly, when you close the genre, it collapses all the
items and stack them into one place. I would like to know if anybody
has implemented this or have ideas on how to implement this.

In the music beta app, it looks like New and recent screen seems to
be using the render script. What about other screens like Genres and
Artists ? Are they using render script or open GL or just java
canvas APIs? Appreciate any help and suggestions on how to implement
this.

Thanks,
Sandy

[android-developers] Re: validating the certificate of apk

2011-09-14 Thread Rahul Garg
I guess you haven't gone through the
http://developer.android.com/guide/publishing/app-signing.html
properly.

It's mentioned there
To verify that your .apk is signed, you can use a command like this:

$ jarsigner -verify my_signed.apk
If the .apk is signed properly, Jarsigner prints jar verified. If
you want more details, you can try one of these commands:

$ jarsigner -verify -verbose my_application.apk
or

$ jarsigner -verify -verbose -certs my_application.apk
The command above, with the -certs option added, will show you the
CN= line that describes who created the key.

[android-developers] Android's Virtual Device (AVD) doesn't start

2011-09-14 Thread JulioSergio
I just downloaded Android's SDK and it comes with a facility to create
and start virtual devices (AVD). I successfully created an AVD,
however it has been impossible to start it. When I try, the machine
outputs the following message:

invalid command-line parameter: Files.
Hint: use '@foo' to launch a virtual device named 'foo'.
please use -help for more information

Since I'm trying to start the AVD from the Android SDK and AVD Manager
interface, I don't understand what the above message means, and how to
start the AVD anyway.

Do you have any suggestion?

Thanks,

Sergio.

[android-developers] Problem with executor service in Eclipse for live wallpaper

[android-developers] Android, MediaRecorder, Native API

2011-09-14 Thread Nadav
Playing with the MediaRecorder Java code I have found the
MediaRecorder class to be quite limited, there is no way to control
the media before it is encoded/compressed, and, there is no way to
control the result, file, socket, transport:MPEG2-TS, MP4 'moof'
position, ...

With windows enviroment DirectShow/MediaFoundation provide fine access
and control of the media pipeline.

I wonder, is there any LowLevel NDK API for the MediaRecorder that
enable some of the above mentioned functionality?

I would really like to avoid implementing a native C++ MediaRecorder
my-self...

Any Help will B appreciated.

[android-developers] Automatic /dev/bus/usb permissions for libusb/jni applications

2011-09-14 Thread Nulldef
hey all,

i am developing an Application that uses libusb via jni.
this application is currently targeted only to rooted, usb-host
Android 3+ machines.

the scenario is as follows:
java Activity
loads jni_wrapper.so
which wraps my_main_lib.so
that uses libusb.so
that needs rw access to: /dev/bus/usb/device

all the .so native libraries are part of an infrastructure that i
install (as root) on /system/lib,
which then can be used by java Activities, run by the simple users.
that means that the whole usb communication must be done from the
native side.

i got everything to work fine, except for one issue - the usb
permissions:
the default permissions of /dev/bus/usb/ entries are (0660, uid= root,
gid= usb).

obviously, a standard java process running a native code does not meet
any of the above requirements,
forcing me to chmod 666 the corresponding /dev entry, to get this
working.

this solution is not so good, though, because it does not survive
reboot, or unplugging/replugging of the device (permissions go back to
0660).

the solution i'm looking for needs to:
- survive reboot/replugging
- be installed ~once~ by the root, and not involve bothering the user
every time to gain permissions
- be generic and run on all (/most) android 3+ machines
- [not mandatory] gives the minimal credentials necessary

directions i thought of:
- is there something like udev rules on linux?
- changing the default permissions the usb devices get upon plugging?
- making my process join the usb group?

any ideas? :-)

thanks!

[android-developers] Retrieve IMEI number/ sim number/mobile number via mobile browser

2011-09-14 Thread inkriti
Following is the scenario:
I have an web application accessible via mobile browser.
I need to detect a mobile device IMEI and sim IMSI whenever an user
clicks on link in my app page accessible via web browser. This is to
track the same device with same SIM and provide him/her next level of
access. User cannot be tracked using loginid as there is no user login
kind of option in my page.

The question is how to get unique device id/sim id via mobile browser
for a specific mobile device.
For now I am focusing on android based mobile devices. But the target
is to make it generic to devices.

Focus of most of the ideas is, what is the kind of access a browser
has over the phone and its app?

1. From a browser link we can open a local app in the following way:

a href=productcateory://productid/customeridGet Details/
a
here productcateory will uniquely identify a local app and invoke it.
But its one way communication. How to get back some response from the
point of invocation and populate some hidden form field dynamically.

2. Via webpage scripts we can store some data locally at client
machine and retrieve it later. but the scope is limited and it is no
way connected to IMEI or IMSI number.

3. Is there a way to get a hook to mobile browser app(remember it's
like any other mobile application) from the webpage and get the id
details via scripts in my page?

4. Is there any option that html5 provides in this regard? I know
there is a localstorage tag in HTML5 and one can store an id in the
client location and retrieve it later. But this is limited to the same
device and same mobile browser and also this is a different solution
to get the imei/imsi number

Let me know if there is any other option without asking user to
installing a local app or browser plugin on the device?

[android-developers] deadlock problem on GC Thread and HeapWorker Thread.

2011-09-14 Thread Neo
deadlock problem on GC Thread and HeapWorker Thread

The deadlock could be raised by below condition.
1. GC thread requests all thread to suspend.
   (dvmCollectGarbageInternal - dvmSuspendAllThreads)
2. HeapWorker could suspend with heapWorkerLock mutex.
   (doHeapWork - callMethod - lockMutex - dvmChangeStatus -
fullSuspendCheck - dvmWaitCond)
3. GC thread request heapWorkerLock mutex. (dvmCollectGarbageInternal -
 dvmLockMutex)
4. GC thread could not acquire heapWorkerLock mutex, because
HeapWorker is already grab the heapWorkerLock.
5. But HeapWorkerThread could not resume until broadcasting
threadSuspendCountCond by GC Thread.
5. GC Could not complete Garbage collection permanently.

Is there any reason to suspend with grab the heapWorkerLock
mutex(HeapWorker Thread).
I think that this daedlock could be clear by change the order.
(dvmChangeStatus - dvmLockMutex)

[android-developers] android, get screen size in api 3.2

2011-09-14 Thread avillar
In API 3.2 when you get the screen height, it seems that return value
is the screen height minus the height menu bar. Here is the code:
((WindowManager)mContext.getSystemService(Context.WINDOW_SERVICE)).getDefaultDisplay().getMetrics(metrics);
int height=metrics.heightPixels;

For API 3.2 emulator with 1280x800 screen size, the height return is
752

I tried to get the height with methods but always return 752

I need to know the real height value because in portrait the menu bar
don´t have influence in the drawable zone.

Any ideas?

[android-developers] What part of the framework should i use for this music app

2011-09-14 Thread hrajchert
Hi, Im new in Android development, and i though of a music application
to make.

I need a way to create and play some (i think) MIDI sounds semi
randomly. The user has to specify speed as BPM (beats per minute) and
I need to create for example 3 measures with time signature 4/4 and
fill them with quarter notes, sixteen notes, etc.

The sound could be a bass guitar, piano or drums. The basic idea is
that I can play any note of any value (whole, half, quarter, eigth,
etc).

Is JetCreator what I need?

If someone could point me to a tutorial it would be really
appreciated.

Thanks.

[android-developers] “BadTokenException: Unable to add window; is your activity running?” at showing dialog in PreferenceActivity

2011-09-14 Thread lama
Hello Masters!

I'd like to ask for some help: In my app, I have only one activity, a
PreferenceActivity (don't need other, it's just a simple background-
sync app, so the PrefsActivity is the Main/Launcher). After the user
setup preferences, checks a checkBoxPreference, and that starts (or
stops) a service. At starting, a dialog shows. But here is the
problem: if the user press back (leave the activity), start it again,
and than tries to check the checkBoxPref., the prefsactivity crashes.
Dialog doesn't shows. I have no idea why, and how to fix it.

This code like this below, (this is exsactly same with that part, what
gives me the problem):

PrefsActivity.java:

package is.it.works;

   // imports .

public class PrefsActivity extends PreferenceActivity implements
OnSharedPreferenceChangeListener { SharedPreferences prefs;

@Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
addPreferencesFromResource(R.xml.prefs);
prefs = PreferenceManager.getDefaultSharedPreferences(this);
prefs.registerOnSharedPreferenceChangeListener(this);
}// onCreate

@Override
public void onSharedPreferenceChanged(SharedPreferences preferences,
String key) {
if (key.equals(checkTest)) {
showDialog(1);
}
if (key.equals(cancel)) {
dismissDialog(1);
}
}// onSPC

@Override
protected Dialog onCreateDialog(int id) {
switch (id) {
case 1: {
ProgressDialog dialog = new ProgressDialog(this);
dialog.setMessage(press back twice, start the app again, and
click checkbox...);
dialog.setIndeterminate(true);
dialog.setCancelable(true);
dialog.setOnCancelListener(new OnCancelListener() {

@Override
public void onCancel(DialogInterface dialog) {
prefs.edit().putBoolean(cancel, false).commit();
}
});
return dialog;
}// case
}// switch
return null;
}// onCreateDialog
}// PrefsActivity

the prefs.xml contains just a simple checkBoxPref:

?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8?
PreferenceScreen xmlns:android=http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/
android
CheckBoxPreference android:key=checkTest android:title=test /

/PreferenceScreen

and the mainfest is simple too:

?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8?
manifest xmlns:android=http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android;
package=is.it.works android:versionCode=1
android:versionName=1.0
uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion=4 /

application android:icon=@drawable/icon android:label=@string/
app_name
activity android:name=.PrefsActivity android:label=@string/
app_name
intent-filter
action android:name=android.intent.action.MAIN /
category android:name=android.intent.category.LAUNCHER /

/intent-filter
/activity

/application
/manifest

But when I run this code, got an error when leave-restart the activity
- and checking the box:

09-14 10:34:34.472: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(281): Uncaught handler:
thread main exiting due to uncaught exception
09-14 10:34:34.502: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(281):
android.view.WindowManager$BadTokenException: Unable to add window --
token android.os.BinderProxy@43756de8 is not valid; is your activity
running?

This error comes from the new ProgressDialog(this) operation.
Changeing this to getApplicationContext(), or PrefsActivity.this
doesnt help, the problem is still on. It's a very simple code, but I
can't figure out what is wrong with it (?maybe nothing, than why
crases and what could be the solution?)...
I'm stucked, and now I have no idea...

Please, tell me why is it happens, and what could be the solution!
Thank You Very Much!

[android-developers] Re: SearchView in Action Bar randomly stealing focus

2011-09-14 Thread kubajanda
Hi, I had the same problem with SearchView in ActionBar, when
iconifiedByDefault was set to false. SearchView.setFocusable(false)
helped me :)

On Jul 27, 10:17 pm, Mike Mangino mmang...@elevatedrails.com wrote:
 We're developing an app on Honeycomb that uses the new tab fragments stuff.
 We also have a SearchView in the Action Bar. We're consistently seeing the
 SearchView gain focus and bring up the keyboard on tab switch. It's
 currently 100% reproducible and always happens on the third tab change. Is
 anyone else seeing this on 3.1 or am I completely crazy?

[android-developers] Android Live wallpaper xOffset in distinct range than 0-1

2011-09-14 Thread avillar
I am developing a Live Wallpaper. I detected a strange behavior in
some devices that I can reproduce in emulator with android 3.0: in
portrait mode the xOffset of onOffsetsChanged Method
(WallpaperService.Engine) has values in 0.25-0.75 range. The effect to
the user is a wallpaper that moves little (only half). In landscape
mode the operation is normal and xOffset is in 0-1 range.

You can verify this problem with the cube live wallpaper example.

I try to use
WallpaperManager.getInstance(HalloweenWorldsIActivity.this).setWallpaperOffsetSteps(0.25f,
0f);

but nothing happens.

There are other devices like HTC sensation that has this same problem.

Someone found this problem and got solution?

[android-developers] libx264 @ Android OS

2011-09-14 Thread Nadav
I am working with Android OS, my aim is doing propriotary imgproc and
send the result as H264 video stream out of the device, for this, I
will need to use a compression tool, I have considered the open source
libx264 ( which got compiled on the Android env quite easily ).

Having that said, does libx264 will know to identify the underling CPU/
instruction set, OR, would I need to maintain a specialized binary for
each CPU type ( eg. Nvidia/ARM ) ?

The last thing I want is to maintain a specific version of code/binary
for each CPU type...

Any help would be appreciated.
