Re: [android-developers] Android Browser plug in

2012-10-29 Thread Michael Banzon
Please note that Android native browser is a very broad definition.
The hardware vendors and/or Android distributers are free to
include/exclude any browser of their choosing (afaik).

There is also very big differences between the versions actually
included in commercial products. Even among new products released
roughly at the same time I spot some key differences.

And - if I might ask - why are you making a plugin for the browser?
Maybe the thing you are trying to achieve could be done another way?

[android-developers] Re: Nexus 7 USB Host - Not able to enumerate device

2012-10-29 Thread al
HI,

first: USB-Host including the USB-Host api works for me on the Nexus 7 - no
root required.

You could try an app like USB Device Info to validate your hardware setup
(usb adapter etc.).

I have setup intents and filters, but I also assume they are not necessary
if you scan for devices yourself.
As I understand it, you just tried a mouse and a phone? I just made a test
with a mouse and though USB Device Info saw it on the linux tab, it did
not see it on the android tab. My app also did not see the mouse. I
assume since android handles the mouse itself, it does not make it visible
to the app.

I.e. try another usb device. If you can see it on the Android tab in USB
Device Info, you probably should see it in your app.

Am Sonntag, 28. Oktober 2012 23:41:04 UTC+1 schrieb Kiran:

 Hi All,
 I recently bought a Nexus 7 for USB development. I would like to use the
 USB Host functionality provided by the new Android OS. I was following the
 USB Host Tutorial at the link:
 http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/connectivity/usb/host.html.

 My program is very simple, and here are the relevant parts of the code:

 *private UsbManager manager;
 *
 * *
 *public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {*
 *super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);*
 *setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);*
 **
 *Log.i(TAG, in onCreate());*
 *manager = (UsbManager) getSystemService(Context.USB_SERVICE);*
 *if(manager==null) {*
 *Log.i(TAG, USB Manager is NULL);*
 *}*
 *else {*
 *Log.i(TAG, USB Manager =  + manager);*
 *}*
 *}*
 **
 *public void enumerateUSBDevices() {*
 *HashMapString, UsbDevice deviceList = manager.getDeviceList();*
 *CollectionUsbDevice deviceCollection = deviceList.values();*
 *IteratorUsbDevice deviceIterator = deviceCollection.iterator();*
 *Log.i(TAG, Number of connected USB Devices = +
 deviceCollection.size());*
 *while(deviceIterator.hasNext()){*
 *UsbDevice device = deviceIterator.next();*
 *Log.i(TAG, device.getDeviceName());*
 *}*
 *}*

 When the enumerateUSBDevices function is called, it reports that the
 number of connected USB Devices = 0. I am using a USB OTG cable, and I
 know that the Nexus 7 is powering the connected USB Device because I
 plugged in a USB Mouse, and it works properly. I also plugged in another
 Android phone, and the Nexus 7 was confirmed to be powering the device.
  However, in both of these instances, the Android program says that there
 are no USB devices connected. I am unsure what is going wrong in my code.
  In my Android manifest, I have the following line:

 *uses-feature android:name=android.hardware.usb.host /*

 My manifest does not have any intent filters associated with any USB
 devices. My understanding based on reading the tutorials is that the
 intent filters need to be in the Manifest only if you want the APP to be
 notified when the USB device is connected after the App is running?

 Can anybody shed light into what I may be doing wrong? Do I need to root
 my device?

 Thanks,
 Kiran

 it reads:
 A user-defined gesture can be recognized by a GestureLibrary and a
 built-in alphabet gesture can be recognized by a *LetterRecognizer*.

 How can I use the LetterRecognizer?
 There's no API for that in the docs, I've also searched android's code
 itself, and besides the same comment above in the code there's
 nothing.

 I've implemented a letter recognizer manually by drawing the ABC
 letters to a gesture raw file and using the regular
 mLibrary.recognize(gesture) API, but the success rate is not very
 high, not even close to Google's gesture search app.

 Does Google's gesture search uses LetterRecognizer?

 Thanks,
 Mor.

[android-developers] Low level APIs for networking

2012-10-29 Thread Abhishek
Hi,

We intend to use android for a custom protocol stack development which
would require access to the Layer 2 PDUs sent out on the Wifi interface.
Are there any APIs which would give us this level of access.
Basically, we want to be able to send and receive raw bytes without having
to use sockets of type UDP or TCP.

Is this possible ?

[android-developers] onDraw method, Lots of problems.

2012-10-29 Thread new_android_dev
I've been struggling on how to make a very large canvas display in an app
I'm making.

Here a picture of what I'm trying to draw:
dl.dropbox.com/u/12945652/temp.PNG

At the moment I've implemented it like this:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/12945652/RowView.java

But sticking everything and repeating calling ondraw is making scrolling
very slow.

So I then tried to split the canvas into smaller bitmaps, like this:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/12945652/temp2java.txt

But now I'm getting out of memory errors when creating more than 10 bitmaps
and then putting them in an ArrayList.

Could anyone help please, I'm totally out of ideas on how to implement this.

The second options works very well for smaller data and there is no lag at
all.

[Note the x-axis variable can be as big as 30,000]

large and small devices.
That's why it's important to me to run it on a Tablet screen. Since I don't
have a Tablet, I need
the emulator.
I defind a jvd device in my eclipes, but when starting the avd, it doesn't
load.
Can you tell me how to fix it?
Thanks alot,
Dafna.

[android-developers] Unreliable resource bucket loading on Nexus7

2012-10-29 Thread Lili Deng
I am working on adding tablet support on an app. To identify tablet or
phone, I try to rely on a boolean value defined in resource of different
bucket, like:
-values

bool.xml

 resources

 bool name=isPhoneLayouttrue/bool

/resources

-values-large

bool.xml

 resources

 bool name=isPhoneLayoutfalse/bool

/resources

And then, I have check in code like:
if (getResources().getBoolean(R.bool.isPhoneLayout)) {
//start activity for phone
}
else {
//start activity for tablet
}

The app support sdk v8-v15 and my test device is Nexus7 with 4.1.2. The
code works most of time, but occasionally wrong activity got loaded, and I
can see that getResources().getBoolean(R.bool.isPhoneLayout) returns true
in debugger when that happens. The problem can be fixed by rotating screen.
However, I don't have exact repro steps for the problem.

Any thoughts on this? Is the right approach to detect phone/tablet? Should
I check something like getResources().getConfiguration() instead?

Thanks!

[android-developers] Testing `onActivityResult()` with JUnit

2012-10-29 Thread codeguru
As a watered down example, say I have an activity, called
StartActivityForResult, with a button which launches ChildActivty:

private View.OnClickListener onStart = new View.OnClickListener() {
@Override
public void onClick(View view) {
Intent intent = new Intent(StartActivityForResult.this,
ChildActivity.class);

StartActivityForResult.this.startActivityForResult(intent,
R.id.child_request);
} };

StartActivityForResult has the following `onActivityResult()` method:

@Override
protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent
data) {
int result =
data.getIntExtra(StartActivityForResult.this.getString(R.string.result), -1);
String msg = requestCode= + requestCode + , resultCode= +
resultCode + , result= + result;
Toast.makeText(this, msg, Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
}

Now I want to write a JUnit test to make sure that a result is correctly
handled by this method. My first attempt is something like this:

@UiThreadTest
public void testStartButtonOnClick() {
Assert.assertTrue(this.startButton.performClick());

Instrumentation.ActivityResult result = new
Instrumentation.ActivityResult(Activity.RESULT_OK, null);
Assert.assertNotNull(result);

Instrumentation.ActivityMonitor am = new
Instrumentation.ActivityMonitor(ChildActivity.class.getName(), result, true);
Assert.assertNotNull(am);

Activity childActivity =
this.getInstrumentation().waitForMonitorWithTimeout(am, TIME_OUT);
Assert.assertNotNull(childActivity);

Assert.fail(How do I check that StartActivityForResult correctly
handles the returned result?);}

This has two problems. First the call to `performClick()` doesn't seem to call
my `onClick` handler. Also, I need access to the values that I normally get as
parameters to `onActivityResult()`. I'm very new to Android development.
However, it seems like this would be a common occurrence in many apps. How do I
go about fixing my test so that I can ensure that my Activity class behaves
correctly?

[android-developers] Re: Android Tablet Lockdown

2012-10-29 Thread Jarrett Volzer
Take a look at TabPilot Tablet Manager. It's listed in Google Play. It's
for locking down multiple tablets into kiosk mode that requires a password
to exit. You can configure which apps appear on the screen via a
cloud-based system that controls them all wirelessly. It's different than
an app lock program in that it has this central management portal. There's
a free and a paid version available. It's designed primarily for schools,
to allow the teacher to lock down a group of tablets and each teacher can
choose which apps are available during their class. It also functions as
an app distribution system, pushing apps from the central control system to
the tablets with the paid version. It will even remotely install the apps
on the tablets with no user interaction if the tables are rooted. It has
its own password system, so it doesn't use the screen lock password. I'm
not sure if that would suit your environment or not.

On Wednesday, October 24, 2012 2:36:48 PM UTC-4, Alan Honeycutt wrote:

 I'm attempting to lock down an android tablet for kiosk-like functionality
 and have explored the existing application options for doing so, but have
 not found anything that meets my needs. Specifically, the tablet needs to
 be able to operate without a password in normal mode, locking the user
 out of any functionality other than that provided by the approved app (or
 apps); however, the tablet must not allow the user to bypass the kiosk
 functionality (for example, by entering safe mode) without a password.
 The apps that I've used so far get around the safe mode problem by
 forcing you to provide a screen lock password, but this means the user has
 to supply a password each time the tablet is locked, which won't work for
 my use case (wherein users will take their tablets home and won't keep them
 on constantly).

 My suspicion is that the functionality that I'm seeking can't be achieved
 at the application level and will require a custom ROM, but I thought I'd
 poll this group before embarking down that path. Any ideas?

[android-developers] Issue about the Android bluetooth secure simple pairing

I want to use the Just Work Mode in secure simple pairing because our
customer asked this feature and our product has no display or keyboard. But
it seems have some problems. Most of the devices seems can not connect to
it after paired.
My device want to pair is a healthy instrument and has no capability to
display the pair number or input something, So I must choose
NoInputNoOutput as the IOCapability.
But the Android phone want to connect it seems always set MITM protection
needed when connect(Authentication_Requirement =5), so it will always get
failed because the our device will return IOCapability = NoInputNoOutput
which has no MITM protection. So what's the workaround?

[android-developers] Re: Calling Activity from Service

2012-10-29 Thread Joe Malin
Oooh. Don't call Activities from a Service. If you do that, in essence
you're popping something to the foreground independent of the user's
actions, which is a Bad Thing.

Why call Activity B? Can't you do the work in the Service? If you need user
input, try using an AsyncTask instead of a Service.

It's hard to tell you what the right thing to do is, given that you don't
say much about what you're trying to accomplish. But *don't* call an
Activity from a Service.

[android-developers] Friendly user testing VS (restricted access in) Play Store

2012-10-29 Thread grOcs
I'm currently developing an App looking for a way to be able to *easily*
distribute it to some *Friendly users* (in practice: people in my network)
to gather comments / suggestions before making it publicly available.
Is there a way to use the Play Store for this (leveraging its ease of use
for distribution / deployment) while able to restrict (eg: only accessible
via url) its visibility ?
So far, I could only find restrictions based on country.

Does the Play Store provide something like this ? Or are there any other
easy means to have it distributed (without the need for people to manually
upload it to their device using SDK/adb) ? Any hints are welcome..
Thx !

[android-developers] Radio power state during an open TCP/IP connection

2012-10-29 Thread Irwin Billing
Does keeping an open TCP/IP connection keep the radio in a high-power state
for the duration of the connection? GCM is implemented as a persistent
TCP/IP connection and I would assume Google wouldn't implement it like that
if it did.

Any pointers would be great. I have to keep a connection open and ping
every 60 seconds (I may be able to expand this range). I am mostly worried
about battery usage when the app is both in the background and foreground.

Did you find a solution for this?

Thanks.

[android-developers] Re: How to use a OnClickListener in Fragment

2012-10-29 Thread Max Dell'Orco
This doesnt work at all.
You should create a method in the FragmentActivity that recall the method
inside your Fragment.
Declaring a Fragment ref inside your FragmentActivity.

Il giorno giovedì 13 ottobre 2011 15:28:18 UTC+2, Streets Of Boston ha

 In your onCreateView callback of your fragment, you could do something
 like this:

 *Button myButton = (Button)view.findViewByid(R.id.mybutton);*
 *myButton.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() {*
 *  public void onClick(View view) {*
 *// put some code here that handles the click event.*
 *...*

 *});*

 Just like you could do in an Activity. Registering onClickListeners in
 Fragments is no different.

[android-developers] Jelly Bean Edit Calendar Event Intent

2012-10-29 Thread Mike Summerton
I have some code in my app which uses an intent to bring up the built in
Calendar editor to edit the event. It works fine pre ICS, but on Jelly Bean
it only allows me to edit the event's alarms and timezone. The code used is
taken straight from the Calendar Provider documentation:

long eventID = ...;Uri uri = ContentUris.withAppendedId(Events.CONTENT_URI,
eventID);Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_EDIT).setData(uri);
startActivity(intent);

I presume there are fields in the new CalendarContract Calendars and Events
classes which control this but I cannot for the life of me figure out what
combination of values should allow me to call the intent to edit all fields
(except the id).

Can anyone help me out?

[android-developers] How to get support for your Android app in Google Play? Any Developer Support Manager in this group?

2012-10-29 Thread LL

Let me try to provide detailed description of the problem - hopefully it'll
help to explain my situation. My company published pretty good language
learning application 2 years ago to Google Play (then Android Market). Over
those 2 years - everything was going OK, app is pretty well implemented, it
was selling well, customers were happy, all in all - great times.

About a 45 days ago, it was decided that we tweak description a bit since
it's been two years and we did it. But then, all of sudden about two weeks
ago, our application disappeared from Google Play. We got our developer to
login into Console and there he found that it was for some reason
Suspended. We were of course shocked and sent email to Google Play
developer support - no response came back.

After a day of investigation our developer finally came back with some idea
of what happened - apparently on Sept 19th Google sent email notification
to email developer used to open Market account. In email it was said that
we need to change description since the one we posted contained keywords
and they gave us 7 days to do so. Obviously, we missed that deadline - but
are now in terrible situation.

We have tens of thousands of people who paid for the app and now can't
install it when they get new device. Because this was minor offense (even
though we weren't aware of the problem and would of course fix the damn
description if our developer checked his email), we are allowed to upload
APK under new namespace - but this would leave existing customers without
updates - and they would be furious (and rightfully so).

So, what to do? Do you have any advice on how to get in touch with some
manager from Google Play developer support and make this right? Because we
have tried emailing support - after sending 10 emails we finally started
getting generic we've are unable to reinstante your app messages back -
but trying to talk with them is obviously impossible! They don't read at
all what we write, they just copy-paste that fix your application and
upload it under new package _if you are allowed_ (even though there was
never problem with the app). And in the meantime, we need to deal with tens
of thousands of both ours and Google's customers that paid serious money to
have the app, and are now angry that they can't download or update the app
- simply because of minor mistake in description.

Thanks in advance for any help!

[android-developers] Test accounts blocked due to In-App Billing transactions

2012-10-29 Thread Roni Yaniv
Hi there,

we are currently developing In-App Billing for our app, and we have two
test accounts - one is used by the developer in the Ukraine and another one
used by me (testing).
Both of these accounts were provided with the details of the same debit
card to make purchases.
After some successful use, both of these accounts are now blocked (even for
use with their other, private, valid credit cards), probably due to some
weird anti-fraud detection algo by Google.

From looking around the web, it seems like we're not the only ones who've
run into this issue, but I couldn't find how to resolve this - I still
haven't received any email from Google regarding the issue, so I don't even
know who to address in order to do so.
How can this be prevented? I find it strange that google blocks test
accounts that show in the developer console as test accounts.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you search stackoverflow you will find example of how you do that.
It is cool :-) BTW!

 My question is
 Is it LEGAL to implement APK's silent installation for commercial use?

 I was told that our rival company made it recently.
 And they prepare to release their service next month.

 Does google have any legal regulation on that?

[android-developers] ListView: row content independent clickable areas

2012-10-29 Thread Marcin Orlowski
Hi,

I am trying to achieve listview row layout that would let me use click
areas (views i could bind OnClickListener to) no matter on real row
content. I do not want to use OnTouchListener, so my attempt is based on
using RelativeLayout and overlay real row content with click areas. But
for some odd reasons I am unable to make it work, desipie recent beta of
ADT shows the layout as expected. When deployed on device it does not work.

Any notes, ideas or hints highly appreciated.

I asked that question on StackOveflow:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13108968/listview-row-content-independent-clickable-areasso
here's copy of that question:

--

I got listview's row layout like this (this is stripped down version of my
real layout so do not comment of things like single elements wrapped in
LinearLayout etc. - it just to illustrate the issue - final version got
more elements there):

[image: Inline images 1]

XML file is below for reference, but I shortly describe what I want to
achieve:

   - blue box (icon) and usually long text here TextView are row real
   content (item_main_container). It can be anything - it shall be
   irrelevant. This layer content is not clickable.
   - the red and green boxes are views I bind row's OnCliclListeners to
   (wrapped in item_click_area_container)- I just want user to be able to
   tap on the row, no matter what's item_main_container's content really is
   (so these red/green are transparent in the app). These are set transparent
   on the image so you can see item_main_content thru it). Please note red
   and green represent *separate* actions. I need to be able to have more
   elements on that layers (i.e. 4 or 5) to handle separate actions depending
   on where user tapped.
   - the yellow area (button_bar_container) holds buttons user may want to
   tap.

So basically item_click_area_container overlays item_main_container, but
not button_bar_container, which is above
item_click_area_containerotherwise user would not be able to tap on
any of its button.

Layout outline looks like this:

[image: Inline images 2]

*QUESTIONS*

   1. Why this is not working as expected and/or how to fix that?
   2. Is there any better way of having content independent click areas
   than using approach like mine item_click_area_container without using
   OnTouchListener?

[android-developers] XML Schema Validation in Android

2012-10-29 Thread Anders Rundgren
Since Google has declined to support XML Schema validation

http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=7395

and the method for adding an XML schema-compliant parser is not actually
implemented (!) I took a somewhat dated Xerces port of mine and made it
available for general use.

The source code + Ant build script:
http://code.google.com/p/openkeystore/source/browse/#svn%2Ftrunk%2Fandroid.mod

The binary (jar) including an Android test program:
http://code.google.com/p/openkeystore/source/browse/#svn%2Ftrunk%2Fxsd-4-android

The code has been tested in GB (2.3.6) and JB (4.1).

 However, I don't have exact repro steps for the problem.

 Any thoughts on this? Is the right approach to detect phone/tablet? Should

Are you saying you have a problem with some Android development (using
the SDK) issue? If so, you need to

A) tell us what you're trying to develop

B) explain what you've done so far to find the answer

C) describe what's happening (that you didn't expect to happen) and
   what error you're getting

D) post relevant code fragements, and the relevant fragments of the
   logcat data

Nobody here, that I know of, is a mind-reader, so you do actually
need to post this information to this list (and to any other you
might post the same question to)...at least, that is, if you're
hoping to get a useful answer.

[android-developers] setNextMediaPlayer for Video

2012-10-29 Thread Shagan

Hi Guys,

I was trying to play two videos gapless using the setNextMediaPlayer of
API16.
I see the videoaudio of the first, but then only the audio of the second
one.

I assume it is coz the first MediaPlayer still has access to the
SurfaceHolder/SurfaceView.
Why doesn't the second MediaPlayer get access to this display after the
first MediaPlayer is completed?
How do i specify this release of resources?.
If i do it explicitly on the OnCompletionListener of the first video, then
I am going to introduce a delay of release of resource, which is the main
reason I am trying to use an API like setNextMediaPlayer

thanks

Shankar

code:

mp0 = new MediaPlayer();
mp1 = new MediaPlayer();
try {
mp0.setDataSource(/mnt/sdcard/39.mp4);
mp0.setDisplay(holder);
mp0.prepare();
} catch (Exception e) {
}
mp0.setOnPreparedListener(this);
mp0.setOnCompletionListener(this);
mp0.start();
mp0.setAudioStreamType(AudioManager.STREAM_MUSIC);
try{
mp1.setDataSource(/mnt/sdcard/40.mp4);
mp1.prepare();
mp1.setOnPreparedListener(new MediaPlayer.OnPreparedListener() {
@Override
public void onPrepared(MediaPlayer mp) {
Log.d(VideoLoop, Adding as next player);
mp0.setNextMediaPlayer(mp1);
}
});

 Hello people,

 I want to override the OnKeyPreIme method of a EditText got from a

 The only way I thought is creating a custom EditText and overriding
 OnKeyPreIme, but when I tried to cast the EditText of my view in my custom
 EditText, it throws a ClassCastException

 Thanks.

[android-developers] Using OpenGL ES 2.0 on camera buffers

2012-10-29 Thread James Hess
Hi,
I looked around yesterday for an answer to this but couldn't find a proper
way to do this. All of the answer were 'hacks' sort of, results in huge
loss in fps doing this.
I am wondering if there's an 'official' way to get camera buffer to GPU?
What I mean by that is:

a) Avoid converting from YUB to RGB (takes a lot of CPU cycles, drops fps)
b) Not copying the buffers (sort of like in iOS, where you can bind the
texture, and avoid expensive memcpy)
c) Save the buffers to a video file

It doesn't matter if I need to use the latest device and/or Android OS.
Just want to know the proper way of doing this or if it's still yet not
possible.

Thanks!

Hi,

I'm not exactly sure if I understood your goal correctly but take a look on;

http://developer.android.com/reference/android/graphics/SurfaceTexture.html
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/hardware/Camera.html#setPreviewTexture(android.graphics.SurfaceTexture)

They provide you means to use preview view directly as a texture at least.

Re: [android-developers] Using OpenGL ES 2.0 on camera buffers

2012-10-29 Thread James Hess
Thanks for the input. My goal is to create a 'ChromaKey' application.
Basically, removes greencolor from background and replaces it with a custom
image, in real time and records it. Relatively simple to do on iOS.

There's this amazing technology called search that lets you input terms
to a website and, using *magic*, it gives you answers. Give it a shot.

Throw it up on the web, send a link. Or email it.

What's wrong is posting a huge blob of code and saying its [sic] does not
work, as if we're supposed to read your mind to determine what does not
work means.

Try posting a clear explanation of what your problem is and maybe someone
can help you.
