If as you suggest Google is now so large and fragmented that related

I am personally backing the China Mobile blocking theory at the moment

definitely interesting:

Although there is probably _someone_ at Google China who is responsible
for liaison with the Chinese government and so would be concerned with
any filtering being done of Android, you're not going to find them here,
nor are you going to find anyone who knows who they are. Your best bet
is probably to go through some of the Chinese-language Google sites,

[android-developers] Re: Android in China - What is going on?

2009-11-29 Thread shimsim
Let not be angry that China is blocking Google, getting angry wont
help in this case ... this is just about understand the specifics of
what is going on. For those of us living in China we are all very
aware of the general blocking/filtering that has been going on for a
very long time. This is nothing new and for the most part is related
to political issues.

Google does not need to take on the government or figure out some way
to bypass the GFW, that would of course be pointless, but as we know
Google has made every effort to comply with the government request and
thats why Google search and Gmail (web based) works fine here. If they
didnt work or were being blocked all the time, many people would
switch to bing and hotmail to avoid the hassle or using vpns all the
time.

Now in the case of sync with Android its a very different situation,
so again this blocking is new and only started since the 60th
anniversary celebrations this blocking effects specifically Gmail
on the Android device but leaves it accessible on the web (meaning is
targeting Android) this blocking stops access to the market app
downloads (again specifically targeting Android).

If the market is the problem, google can very easily filter it, so
what is the problem?

In the past when google has been blocked, ie search and gmail, they
have issued statements explaining why ... even if the reasons seemed
unjustified, like the crackdown on porn, google went as far as to
issue public statements and expressed a desire to resolve the issues
and reinstate the services effected. This is because it values the
market over here.

Considering the mobile market size over here and the recent articles I
have been reading on China Mobiles use of Android, I am wondering if
the blocking is being done by the government or by China mobile or for
some other currently undisclosed reason.
Whatever the reason might be its unlikely that google does not care
and I simply want to know what the future holds for Android in China.
If the blocking is a permanent feature, then its important for me and
others out here to know this and it would certainly help if we knew
why.

Thanks!

[android-developers] Re: Android in China - What is going on?

2009-11-28 Thread shimsim
Hi Hong, of course Google has complied, it had no choice if it wanted
to stay in the Chinese market but that is what makes this even more
puzzling ... as far as I can tell Google is complying, and there does
not seem to be a good reason for blocking sync services to gmail or
market on android etc ... so why is it being blocked? For the same
reasons Google has complied with search filtering (the size of the
China market), I'm sure its also happy to comply with whatever else it
takes to get sync working over here.

I get the feeling I'm swimming against the tide with all the defensive
comments. I am not attacking Google or anyone for that matter. I posed
a simple question ... whats going on? ... yes its being blocked ...
but why? and by understand why, those of us our here who are either
unable to use the service or wondering about its long term
availability can can make informed decisions rather than guessing or
hoping.

Am I really the only one who would appreciate an official explanation?

Again, thanks to all for contributing

Anther rumor I heard was that China Mobile got involved in
blocking Android Market downloading because of their own interest, as
you know, CMCC have their own MMarket, and they share the revenue with
the MMarket app providers, so they definitely don’t want the Ophone
users to download apps from Android Market; But anyway, as I said at
the beginning, it’s only a rumor;
The 2nd thing I want to bring up is, HTC Hero and Tattoo have both
been released in China(mainland) as well, they are called Dopod A6288/
A3288(OEMed by HTC) here, one of my colleagues just bought a Dopod
A3288, I surprisedly found that there was no Android Market installed
on her phone, have no idea what does that mean to the partnership
between Google and their Chinese partners…

Yes adding hosts alias needs root permission.

You can also try Tor for android, not sure it will work, but worth a try.

Also buying a VPN account will help out as well.

[android-developers] Re: Android in China - What is going on?

2009-11-28 Thread shimsim
Hi Dianne,

Would you accept a fairly reasonable assumption that Google has a
vested interest in Android operating correctly in China? ... and for
that reason there must be at least one person in the entire
organization that knows or at the very least would be concerned about
something like this?

I posted this question on the dev group because this is simply the
highest publicly accessible contact point within the Google group that
have any relevance to the Android platform. If I had an alternative or
for that matter if anyone else could give me a better way of finding
the people in the know I would be more than grateful. Not only could I
get an answer but I could avoid rattling anyones cage.

Killing off this discussion by categorically saying that nobody here
knows or can help is in my opinion extremely defensive and negates the
useful information that has been shared or learned from the
discussion, even if I still dont have a definitive answer.

Please Dianne, try to see it from my point of view, I am working and
living here in China, I dont have the luxury of calling up my phone
company and getting a fix. Android has been a life saver for me in
past year and I want to know if I must now look to alternatives or if
I can hold on for the moment. Lets not make this into a tit for tat
exchange, I firmly believe that someone out there knows whats going on
and even if they cant share the full complexities of the problem, can
at least outline what the problem is and possible outcomes.

Hi Amour,

So far the CMCC explanation with their own alternative market is by
far the most logical explanation of what might be going on and would
also explain the hush hush but I would prefer not to jump to any
incorrect conclusions.

Thanks again to all that have contributed!

have better access to people who DO have such information. I think its

I havent been able to access the Market for almost a month now. I

All I said originally was that it was unlikely that anyone on this list
knows the answers to these questions, since people seemed to be getting
upset that they were going unanswered. Well I am sorry I said anything.
And I am not going to make another response to this particular issue,
because it is a waste of everyone's time.

As far as market relying on Google Sync -- all of the Google services funnel
through a single underlying network connection that drives all of the sync
tickles, updates, and everything else going on with the google services. If
this doesn't work, they will all be stuck getting anything pushed from the
google servers. Market operates by pushing to the device a request to
install the app, so if you can't get those pushes, it won't install.

[android-developers] Re: Android in China - What is going on?

2009-11-28 Thread shimsim
Hi Dianne,

Respectfully I appreciate your decision to no longer contribute to
this topic.

I am sure this has absolutely no bearing or consequence on your life
which is why it is of no interest to you but I do not recall insisting
at any point that you have to contribute. Other who find this a waste
of time simple dont bother posting, which is the normal approach.

If anyone else thinks this is a waste of time, they are also free to
not contribute. They dont even need to read it in the first place.

I personally have gained a few alternative work arounds, insights into
this problem and a few friends along the way who also happen to be
suffering due to this problem, so to say this is wasting EVERYONE'S
time is incorrect and shortsighted.

Sorry if my comments have caused you offence, ultimately I am just
looking for answers and maybe foolishly thought this was a good
starting point.

To everyone else interested in this subject, let try to stay on
subject, nothing political, no need to defend, no one is being blamed,
we just want to understand. Please feel free to continue to contribute
workarounds or information that might shed light on why sync is now
being targeted by the GFW. Hopefully someone in the know will
eventually see this and contribute.

Thanks!

[android-developers] Re: Android in China - What is going on?

2009-11-26 Thread CraigsRace
I had been in communication with some Chinese companies telling me
that they are going to set up their own Android Market that would not
be blocked and would be available for the OPhone. Unfortunately, none
of the companies could show me any evidence that they had anything
close to being finished. One company even wanted me to e-mail my apk
to them and sign over all rights to the application to them (clearly I
wasn't going to do that).

I've now stopped communication with them, and I'm waiting to see if
any of the companies actually get a Chinese version of the market up
and running.

If anyone has some inside information on a Chinese Android Market, I
would be very greatfull if you would share it.

As far as China blocking the Google Android Market, I suspect Dianna
is kindly asking you to do a Google search on china blocked
websites, or something similar, and go from there.

2009-11-26 Thread shimsim
Hi CraigsRace,

Thanks for the info on the Chinese android market, its interesting to
hear that. Whilst there are alternative markets, personally i would
prefer to stick to the official android market.

I have of course done many searches on the topic of 'china blocked
websites' and am fairly familiar with the which sites are blocked and
why, but so far nothing on the specifics of sync being blocked on
android phones and certainly nothing more than non official
speculations.
As i wrote above, this issue renders the phone somewhat useless.
without a reason for why sync is being blocked or an understanding as
to whether its something that Google is working to resolve within the
confines of the government requirements, as a dev or simply an end
user, I think it will have meaningful ramification.

Thanks again for all the feedback!

[android-developers] Re: Android in China - What is going on?

2009-11-26 Thread CraigsRace
Hi Shimsim,

You're most welcome. I was curious as to the blocking of Google
services by China, so I went ahead and searched it for myself. The
reports indicate China is blocking Google in an effort to make Google
increase its efforts to filter out porn sites in its China Google
Search. So, one would imagine, if Google does manage to filter out
the porn for the China Google Search, then China will unblock the
Google services, and you'll have a fully working Android phone again.

Anyway, it looks like it is out of us mere Android developers control
anyway.

Cheers.

blocking is in effect 90% of the time but at random periods during the

I have ruled out any issues with my phone and judging by the number of
other users that are experiencing this problem it seems fairly
 widespread.

 My questions are as follows:

 1. Is Google aware of this problem?
 2. What is the reason for the blocking?
 3. Will it continue in the long term?

I am really hoping to get an official statement on what is really
 going on.
I would prefer if people didn't jump in and start suggesting VPN
options, whilst I am familiar with some workarounds, I would prefer to
understand the root of the problem and how it will effect Android in
 the long term in China.

 Thank you!

Well I can safely say the blocking is back in GZ, as of last night no

Because President Obama was in town. Many blocked service were restored,
e.g. twitter.
However, this won't last for long.

What you will need is to get a VPN (buy 1 for about $3/mo) and set up VPN on
your Android phones and you are good to go.

2009-11-17 Thread siuying
Hi

China government blocked Google sync services in China. Google
probably aware, but I dont think they can help. Note this is not only
affecting Android but almost affect every similar services. This may
or may not be official, government can block any service without prior
notification!

For well over 1 month now my ADP G1 has been experiencing connectivity

problem (actually anything requiring account authorization from what i
can tell) during which time they are both unaccessible. On average the
blocking is in effect 90% of the time but at random periods during the
day/night will start to work again.

 Thank you!

[android-developers] Re: Android in China - What is going on?

2009-11-17 Thread westmeadboy
I've been using my HTC Hero in mainland China now for three months.

Up until about one week ago, whenever I tried to download an app from
the Market there was about a 50-50 chance it would work. When it didnt
work there would almost immediately be a notification message saying
unable to download, please try later etc. Retrying immediately almost
never worked. Some random point later in the day, it would work.

However, one week (or maybe 10 days) ago things got much much worse.
Its been virtually impossible to download anything. I must have tried
over a hundred times. There was one exception 3 days ago where there
was a small time window of less than an hour where I managed to
download a couple of apps. It was like winning the lottery :)

What's worse, a couple of days ago I started getting a message saying
I needed to log in to my google account (whenever I opened the Market
app). But logging in never succeeds. The internet connection is fine
(I can browse the internet over EDGE), but for some reason, a
connection cannot be made to the google servers to do account
access...

[android-developers] Re: Android in China - What is going on?

2009-11-17 Thread shimsim
As you mentioned siuying, its the sync services that are getting
blocked. westmeadboy, that is why everything else works fine, but if
you need to collect gmail or download a market app or sign in to your
account again, its not going to work.

Whilst I am opposed to China blocking facebook, twitter and anything
politically sensitive, I understand their opposition to it but what is
the logic of blocking Android.
What I am also trying to understand is WHY and if this is going to be
an ongoing issue or something that Google is working on resolving with
the government here so that users can at least have a phone that
works, even if lets say market apps are censored.

Can anyone from the official Android team or Google shed some light on
this subject. I appreciate more people in China posting their
experience of this problem but more importantly I want the above
questions answered.

Thanks!
