[android-developers] Re: New SDK available - 0.9 SDK beta

2008-08-26 Thread Qwavel

Thanks for bringing up an important and related point.

We are upset that the bluetooth API has been pulled, but I guess it
wouldn't have been much good if it didn't work well or was not
'comprehensive'.

Java developers are used to JSR82. J2ME bluetooth apps are currently
written to JSR82. If Android is not going to support JSR82 it would
be better if their API could at least support the basic things that
can be done with JSR82.

One example is L2CAP sockets. I see in this new blog entry:
http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2008/08/some-information-on-apis-removed-in.html
that L2CAP socket support from Java is being considered but is not
certain, whereas this is supported in JSR82.

If the Android Bluetooth API is not only different then JSR82 but also
quite inferior in functionality then it will be hard to port JSR82
apps to Android and it will simply make the Android SDK look bad.

Please add the bluetooth API in Android 1.1 and please make it
possible for us to port our existing JSR82 apps to Android.

Thanks,
Tom.

Dear Google representatives,

Since Bluetooth seems to be hottest topic for the SDK 0.9, please
clarify the level of Bluetooth support in the first Android phone that
is coming this fall.

Which of the following is correct?
1. The phone does not have Bluetooth hardware.
2. The phone has disabled Bluetooth hardware that can be enabled with
a future SDK update.
3. The phone has Bluetooth hardware and supports basic Bluetooth
features such as pairing and RFCOMM.

Arguably, none of the above, because there is no such thing as *the*
phone (emphasis mine).

Android will most likely be used on a wide range of devices. These will
likely support various sets of Bluetooth profiles, no different than any
other phones made today.

Many Bluetooth functions would likely work beneath the level of Android
applications, no different than with other smartphone operating systems.
For example, you don't have to be running some downloaded magical
Windows Mobile application to use the handsfree profile -- that's
handled solely by hardware and Windows Mobile itself.

Given all that, *my* questions are:

-- Which Bluetooth profiles will the Android OS handle on its own (given
hardware support for said profile)?

-- What means do developers have for adding support for other Bluetooth
profiles not handled directly by the Android OS? If the answer is not
at the application level, only by modifying the core Android OS, would
you consider addressing this scenario when writing up the documentation
for how the community can contribute back to Android, once it goes open
source?

Well, I'm hoping Android continues to advance as a platform, which will
inevitably mean *some* amount of API changes (along with orthogonal API
additions). I'd hate for Android to be permanently frozen in the 1.0
state, no matter how slick 1.0 will seem at release time.

My grousing wasn't aimed at the changes in the SDK, just that I have a
pile of examples to work through. It's the price I chose to pay a few
months ago, when I elected to get a book out based on M5. No biggee, just
a chunk o' work to get done.
