Re: [Assam] [NorthEastIndia] IS IDEALISM IN POLITICS POSSIBLE - Prodyut Bora

2015-02-20 Thread Gautam Choudhury
Its really a nice idealistic proposal. I think, before going ahead with this
idea, Pradyut Bora must clarify a few points e.g. Why he joined BJP and why got
disillusioned? Whether he has planned to devote full time in politics? if yes,
how he has planned for his livelihood till the intended party is in power, any
plan for working to-gather with Akhil Gogoi? I think people will have many more
such queries before taking Pradyut Bora in faith.

Subject: [NorthEastIndia] IS IDEALISM IN POLITICS POSSIBLE - Prodyut Bora

    IS IDEALISM IN POLITICS POSSIBLE

Dear Friends:

I have a dream. And that dream is to create Assam's, and maybe India's most
ethical/honest and inclusive political party.
Democracy is about making political choices. And it is the job of political
parties to present people with such alternatives. In my opinion, today there
isn't a single party in Assam that can claim to be qualitatively different from
each other. And this is precisely the reason why I resigned from the BJP. So
why don't we create one?
WE DON'T NEED A MODI, WE DON'T NEED A KEJRIWAL
Mr Modi and Mr Kejriwal may have their strengths, but the salvation of Assam is
in the sole hands of the people of Assam. No Modi or Kejriwal will come and
solve our local problems. We ourselves have to be our own Modi, or our own
Kejriwal. If we put our hearts and minds to it—and if our intentions are
pure—there is nothing that they have done that we cannot do.
Lot of people ask me to join AAP in Assam. I say 'no'. My argument is: why do
we have to ride on the back of a Kejriwal? Why can't we be Kejriwal ourselves?
We don't need to get Kejriwal to Assam; instead, if we like, we may adopt the
values of integrity and transparency that he espouses. Rather than borrowing a
template from outside, why can't we create such a model party that the whole of
India emulates us tomorrow?
Let me tell you how we can create that dream party.
FINANCES: THE ROOT OF ALL CORRUPTION
The root of all political corruption is party finances. There is no
accountability of where money comes from, and where it is spent. I want to
begin here.
I estimate that the monthly running cost of the state unit of BJP Assam is Rs
10 Lakhs. This is the operational cost of only the state unit, not the
districts. Secondly, this does not include election campaign expenses. Now, for
a moment if we forget election campaign finances, and concentrate only on the
monthly running cost of the state unit, the question is: how do we raise Rs 10
Lakhs each month, such that we have no apparent handicap vis-a-vis the BJP and
Congress.
My proposal is: if 1000 people contribute Rs 1000/- per month, its adds up to
Rs 10 Lakhs. If at least a thousand good people believe that they should
contribute to the creation of a party that does not have to go to questionable
characters for money, I think the financial sustainability of this new party is
assured. Once we have the daily sustainability assured, I think we can find out
other innovative and ethical means to raise election finances whenever
necessary.
The big question is: whether we can get a thousand good people in Assam who
would back the idea? Come to think of it: it is not a big sum. Rs 1000/- is
just the cost of two kilos of rohu fish. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose said,
“give me blood, I will give you freedom.” Let us go to these prospective
thousand donors and say, “give us Rs 1000/- per month, and we would give you
Assam's most ethical and performance-driven party, something that we can be
proud of.”
Two points here: (a) accountability and (b) performance
Accountability: We would ask these donors to give us 12 post-dated monthly
cheques of Rs 1000/- each. This way we would not be able to spend all the money
in one go, and our sustainability for the year in assured. In return, what we
would give to our donors is a quartely (3-monthly) financial report, audited by
a chartered accountant, on how we spent the money. In India, only listed
companies prepare quarterly balance sheets and profit-and-loss statements. If
we do this, we would be the first party in India to be doing so. This would set
a new paradigm of probity in Indian politics.
Performance: At the end of the year, we would again go to these donors for
their next 12 post-dated cheques. Unless we perform, our donors would not fund
us for the next year. This would ensure that we perform.
IDEOLOGY: LIBERALISM DEMOCRACY
The 'ideology', if you wish to use this word, of this new party should be
liberalism and democracy.
Liberalism means personal, as well as economic freedom

was delighted to read the proposal from Ike. As you know I chair a committee on
NE ( the work was suspended when the Code of Conduct came into operation) to
look onto the concerns of people from NE in the Metros. As part of our
tentative recommendations I was thinking of such a centre. We had a little
wider view -- wanted the centre to be 'one stop' centre for grievances,
counselling, orientation for people coming for the first time to the metro
about 'do's and dont's', spoken hindi classes etc. Any suggestions is welcome.
It will be very helpful if a proper
proposal could be sent to me so that I can make it a part of our report after
consulting the other members. If it comes in the name of an organisation--like
FASS- it will be even better.
Can you also suggest a good name for the
centre-- instead of the bland centre, complex etc?-- a name that symbolises the
NE spirit.

government by 16 May 2014. The country
needs a change. The nation have not yet understood the potential of NE
States ,its resources and how it could involve in nation building. We are
surrounded by foreign countries all around and connected with mainland
India just by 22 km. All such good brains have moved to greener pastures.
So now it is time to do reverse investment and make all NE States
progressive and developed state.
POINTS TO BE NOTED
1. Government of India has a Ministry of DONER to look into the
interests of the NE people of all 8 NE States.
2. As an organization ,FASS to make sure that Government land to be
allotted at New Delhi and create a complex to be called NORTH EAST STATES
CENTER OF EXCELLENCE
3. Make all MP's who will get selected to come together irrespective of
party lines to ask the Government of the day to allot such land. They will
all be taken as members but they have to work for their people in their
constituencies.
 4. The complex to have independent state
pavilion who would sell
products of their states on daily basis.
5. All handicraft /handloom products.
6. Convert this place as a Cultural Center with  at least two or three
restaurants providing both the food of the NE and also other Indian
/continental food . Employ only people from the NE States.
7. All NE people become members and they must have a Membership number.
8. Have a state of the art auditorium. Hire it out when the state
functions not held.
9. Invite all foreign delegation who visit India ,to come to this Center
and to know more about the NE States.
10. Have a Conference room, library with all authors from the respective
states to be able to display their product.
11. Let it be a Tourist place for all foreigners to be able to see all
the NE States under one roof.
12. Let this Center be the doorway to the NE States.
13. Create Travel Facility and Information Center.
14. Create atmosphere for Exports for all NE products, for eg:
Tea,Bamboo,Cane,Handicraft,Hand loom products,herbal products,organic
food,Film release, book release ,fashion show of designers from NE.You hire
out the place to other designers for their event and that money goes into
the upkeep and maintenance of the Center.
15. The allotment of land must be negotiated with Chairman,NDMC so that
the site must be centrally located.
16.All state events to be showcased here.
17. Let this place be vibrant and an everyday event place.
In fact ,I had taken 1 year to prepare this project few years ago.I have
discussed this subject with Mr. Mukundakam Sharma when he was
President,Assam Association but he could not take any initiative. The
project is ready already with me.It was my dream to show the potential of
NE people and their creative talents which is a great resource not yet

There is one at 10th position --- Annisha Kalita, Saint Mary's HS, Kamrup. This
year results were accompanied with lots of 'Khelimeli'. One more name was added
at the 10th position later on... She is Anisha Choudhury from Asom Jatiya
Bidyalay, Noonmati.
Yes...Guwahati's result was far from encouraging. Lots of better schools
joining CBSE also contributed to this...

Re: [Assam] pains of parting

2012-11-26 Thread Gautam Choudhury
Partition is the root cause of all the problems. It benefits some of the power
hungry people and the common people doesnot gain anything out of this. They
only suffers. Look at the India - Pakistan partition case. Assam was connected
with the rest of the world through a big land area. We had buisnesses through
the river route and even through the sea route. Our per capita income was more
than that of national average during pre-independence era. We had migration at
that time as well. But, we gained from that as we had Madhav deva (the great
contributor to Assamese Society after Sankardeva) and many more from that part
and from whom we were benefited a lot. There was reverse migration as well from
which we only gained. Now, after partition, we are  landlocked. We are
connected with the rest of the world only through the famous 'Chicken neck'. We
dont have buisness through river route anymore. Journey to Calcutta from
Guwahati takes 24 hours by train
now. It was much less during pre-independence era even when we need to change
trains. The per capita income has gone below the national average. It
benefitted mostly one party because of this partition and ultimately it
contributed to the Dynasty raj of one family. The partition was done due to the
political greed of this family...
And we the people of Assam are made to suffer from myriad of problems due to
partition.

Re: [Assam] [andamanicobar] Remember Operation Leech

2012-06-15 Thread Gautam Choudhury
Please try to look deeper into the situations of North East before commenting
like this. If you look a little back, you will find that the gross per capita
income in Assam was much above the national average. Whereas, it is much below
at present. Assam was a very peaceful state than the socalled advanced states
of India before 80s. Present scenario is not like that...why? (Ofcourse most of
the incidents are blown out of proportions also in most cases...and similar
cases are happening elsewhere in India as well).

This region was doing international buisness through sea route (through present
Bangladesh),had trade and other relations with the neighbouring countries like
Burma. In fact, Burma was under same british before Independence. But, see the
present situation--- This region is completely landlocked now and connected
through the famous narrow 'chicken neck' with the rest of the world.

When 'oil' was first discovered in 'Digboi' in remotest part of Assam, the
british established the fist oil refinery at 'Digboi' itself. Because, that was
the most cost-effective way to do. This also changed the lifestyle of the
people in that area. But, see what the Independent India did later on. It laid
thousand kilometers of pipeline to take oil from Assam to establish a refinery
at Baruani, Bihar.

Later on, the Assamese had to revolt seperately for 3 more refineries to be
established out of its own crude oil and mind it...the total capacity of the
first 3 refineries were less than that of one single refinery in Baruani.

Assam produces highest tea in India and you know the tea head quarter is there
in Kolkata only. Till 80's...there were not a single tea auction centre in
Assam.

And the list goes on..

We the northeast Indian do often encounter some of querries from the rest of
the Indian...like...'do we need passport to visit North East'.

So please donot comment irresponsibly like this anymore..

[Assam] New format for admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs from 2013

2012-05-29 Thread Gautam Choudhury
Dear all,

The following news is relevant for the 2013 final HS students:

From 2013, aspiring candidates for IITs and other central institutes like NITs
and IIITs will have to sit under new a format of entrance test which will also
take plus two board results into consideration.

The announcement was made on Monday by HRD Minister Kapil Sibal after chairing
a meeting of the joint councils of IITs, NITs and IIITs.

Emphasising that there was no dissent among the councils about the move, he
acknowledged there was a lot of resistance during the consultation process
from the IIT system. IIT senates especially the faculty federation had been
opposing the new format.

But Sibal said the selection of the candidates for the IITs and other central
institutes would be different even as all the aspirants will have to go through
all the steps under new format.

This system will replace the IIT-JEE and AIEEE. Students will sit for a main
test and an advance test conducted on the same day.

For admission to all the centrally funded institutes, there would be 40
percentage weightage for performance in Class XII (after normalisation of
marks), 30 per cent weightage to performance in main and 30 per cent in the
advanced test.

In case of IITs, there would be a filtering process involved. The board results
and the main test will be given 50 per cent weightage each.

Only the top 50,000 students will be selected for the advance test after taking
into account their performance in the board results and the main result.

The merit only in advanced examination will be considered for admission to
the IITs, Sibal said.  At the same time, he added, the IIT council has agreed
to move to the other system by 2015.

First English book on Sankardev launched

DIPANJAN SINHA

Calcutta, May 10: Every story is born an orphan. It needs a storyteller for a
name, nurture and recognition. The story of Srimanta Sankardeva was born within
Bimal Phukan from the time he moved out of Assam to study engineering in
Calcutta and was nurtured since for the recognition it got today at the
Calcutta launch of its book Srimanta Sankaradeva — Vaishnava Saint of Assam at
Oxford Bookstore.
A little before the launch, Phukan spoke of how an engineering scholar turned
into a storyteller.
“Sankaradev was as socially or religiously significant in the 15th century
during the Bhakti movement as Nanak, Chaitanya or Kabir but unfortunately very
few people outside Assam know about him. Even in Assam Sankaradev is now an
alien to the younger generation,” he said.
An incident which influenced him was when Satyajit Ray was conferred the
Xankaradeva award in 1975 he was unaware of even the saint’s existence. “When a
man of Ray’s erudition is unaware of such a colossal social figure from a
neighbouring state you realise there is something seriously wrong. Even
Khushwant Singh who wrote a very positive review for my book admitted that
before reading the book he hardly knew of Sankardev,” Phukan said.
The fault, however, he feels is with the people who know his story but have not
conveyed it in a language that can cross the barriers of culture and age.
“This is in a way the first English book on the saint’s life. Before this there
have been books written in Assamese or scholarly books which the common reader
finds difficult to associate with. I hope this book can even get the NRI
Assamese child interested in the guru whose picture he saw at his grandparents’
house,” he said.
The book since its Assam launch in 2010 has been quite a success. A copy of the
book can be found in reputed libraries in India and abroad. The British
library, British Museum library, American library of Congress, London School of
Eastern Studies and the Indian National library are some among the noteworthy
ones.
“I was so apprehensive of response from scholars that I would hardly ask them
about the book. But I was surprised by the overwhelming appreciation,” he said.
The book launch here was attended by poet and novelist Sunil Gangopadhyay and
chairman of the World Poetry Festival, Ashis Sanyal. Sanyal stressed on the
importance of translation to enable people across the country to read
literatures of the country.

Dear all,

Please read this inspiring story about a job well done by one Mr Jadav Payeng:

http://www.asianage.com/india/man-creates-forest-single-handedly-brahmaputra-sand-bar-972

A barren wasteland to a lush 1,360 acre forest on the banks of the Brahmaputra
- truly a beautiful effort that all of us looking for a greener planet are
grateful for.
Thank you, Mr Payeng!

[Attachment(s) from Promit Hatikakoty included below]

Dear Freshers,

Recently I have received lots of ur resumes for openings in our company. But
what is disappointing that most of the resumes are not at all up to the mark
and can not be forwarded to HR.

For eg, resumes does not contain/elaborate about projects done, year of
passing, percentage, skill set.

I think its time to highlight few points to the aspiring buddies and request
you to prepare more useful resumes for ur own benefits.
Attached is a resume template u can follow, if u wish to.

1. Resume should be concise, well formatted , but definitely not a designer
product.
Some resumes received are so colorful, so flushy; it looks like ppt. Avoid it.

2. In Resume, mention ur programming skills, tool knowledge on top. During
project description write what tools, programming language used ( a must feed).
Also mention year of passing out. ( its imp). Tabular format of data
presentation helps. [ avoid long sentences ]

3. Recruiters are more interested knowing ur year of pass out, percentage,
skills proficiency, skills used in projects etc rather than ur personal details
/ hobbies / school captain etc. So project ur skills, strength first...in short
give what recruiters want.

4. Resume must be properly named. Not like Resume_updated.doc ,
CV_Anil(2).doc, My_Recent_CV.doc etc. Ur resume name says a lot.
Follow a format like Resume_Anil_BE_2012_C++_70%.doc , such formats help us
too.

5. While forwarding resumes, write mails short (no long mails ) and crisp. Also
mention the source of opening info eg: link, mail u have received etc.  In a
large origination there could be many openings going through simultaneously.
Even an employee wont be having all such info. Thus knowing the source of
opening info helps us to frw ur resume to specific team.

6. Dont send blank mails too. Atleast spend a minute to write a line.

7. Phone number / email must be correct. Few times I received a follow up mail
mentioning updated ph/email. This showcase ur own seriousness.

8. If u get a call for interview from HR, dont forget to inform the person who
forwarded the resume.

and most importantly prepare well for the interview. Its a worrying point to
knw that most freshers dont even have the answers to the basic questions.

All the best.

Thanks Regards,
Promit Hatikakoty

Re: [Assam] Third party role in The Tech Awards 2011 by The Tech Museum

2011-10-14 Thread Gautam Choudhury
Very well said. Its look like a total conspiracy to get benefit through
plagiarism. From the information available in you and Buljit's mail, it looks
like AFNA is much more responsible as an organisation than a single
individual and also (if true) applying for the award as it was nowhere
connected with the project. It is also creating a bad name to the whole
community as we dont have many such instances in the past. Dr. Das and his
Institution should get the lion share of the award. It will encourage them to
put more energy towards development of many more fruitful projects in
future which will surely benefit our society. CRD may get a portion of it as
the first agency to successfully implementating the project.

Third party role in The Tech Awards 2011 by The Tech Museum

The controversy over the Tech Award to Dr. Pradip Kumar Sarmah of CRD, Guwahati
took a new turn after a press release by Assam Foundation of North America
(AFNA). AFNA has mentioned that:
i) it has submitted the application for this award.
ii). as part of the application process, AFNA submitted detailed information
about the contributions of all stakeholders in the Rickshaw Bank project,
including those of CRD and IIT Guwahati.

Now going by the statement of AFNA, the questions that arise are:
i) Who authorized AFNA to apply for this award without prior permission from
the stakeholders (AFNA has never discussed this with Project Investigator and
Designer of the Dipbahan,
Dr. Amarendra Kumar Das)?
ii) Was it that AFNA only nominated Rickshaw bank?
iii) Why AFNA and CRD will attend the award function and why not IIT Guwahati?
iv) In whose account is the award money going to be deposited (in case it is
announced at the award function)? It has been pointed out that AFNA applied for
the award and it is logical that they will receive the amount and then they
will pass it on to whom - Dr. Pradip Sarmah or CRD or AFNA coffers?

AFNA needs to justify its action, because nobody can claim awards like this on
other stakeholder’s behalf, without prior permission. Is this acceptable in
today’s knowledge driven economy?

The press release by AFNA looks like a damage control measure (or shall we say
face saving measure?) taken by AFNA. If readers are keenly following the whole
episode, one can see that AFNA still did not touch Dr. A. K. Das’s main
allegation of PLAGIARISM. CRD and its executive
director have received several awards based on plagiarism. CRD claims that the
Rickshaw Bank concept was innovated by them. However this concept was practiced
much earlier in the year 1994-95 when Rastriya Gramin Vikash Nidhi (RGVN)
sanctioned this project to the Bastar Sevak Mandal, Madhya Pradesh. Please go
through the pdf attachment regarding the project of the Bastar Sevak Mandal.
AFNA themselves should inform about this plagiarism to The Tech Museum so that
we can be sure that AFNA is not in league with this plagiarism. AFNA, instead
of initiating face saving measure like telling the world now that they gave
credit to Dr. Das and IIT Guwahati, should take corrective measures so that the
guilty get their due share of blame and the one who deserves due honor gets it,
otherwise this will bring disgrace to Assam and Assamese Community.

AFNA has mentioned that CRD has made some changes in the original design but
question arises whether CRD has
taken permission from IIT Guwahati for such changes and whether by making some
changes they have compromised with the quality and passenger safety. I have
seen many rickshaws on the roads of Guwahati which have been manufactured by
some local manufacturer other than CRD, so can they too claim to be the
innovator because they have made certain changes? Dipbahan tricycle rickshaw
designed by Dr. Amarendra Kr. Das and supported by the Department of Design,
IIT Guwahati, is excellently designed for passengers’ benefit like space,
safety, comfort etc., which only a professionally trained designer like Dr.
A.K. Das can conceptualize and deliver.

When the whole success of DIPBAHAN is to be attributed to the design, leaving
Dr. Amarendra Kr. Das and IIT Guwahati out of this award is nothing short of
treachery and we must play our role that “if we cannot do any good for the
society, let us not harm it”. Action of AFNA/CRD will have a
big effect on de-motivating people like Dr. Das and his colleagues in IIT
Guwahati.

Nice to see blended bihu..It was not at all focussed in the media. Felt proud
that Bihu represented the culture of India in such an important international
event. However, presence of some genuinine Assamese dancers would have added
more colours to it. Your mail should have been spread during the world cup

The Government of India has proposed the construction of over 100 mega dams in
the seismologically geologically sensitive Northeast region of India - and
that too AGAINST the advice of a Govt. appointed Expert committee!! In June
2010, a scientific committee jointly established by the Assam Government and
National hydro-Power Corporation presented their report on their study of the
downstream impacts of the 2000 MW Lower Subansiri Mega Dam Project. Excerpt
from the report submitted by this expert committee: “…The selected site for the
mega dam of the present dimension was not appropriate in such a geologically
and seismologically sensitive location…Therefore, it is recommended not to
construct the mega dam in the present site…”.

Studies show that the power requirement can be met by ecologically safer and
environment-friendly smaller dams as well. So, why build mega dams and cause
unthinkable damage when the power requirement can be met by making safe smaller
dams?

We are starting a petition campaign against the construction of these mega
dams. A physical signature is already gaining momentum in Assam and the
adjacent states. We are also aiming to garner 10 signatures through an
online petition. Please help our cause by signing this online petition
- http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/megadamsneindia Also, please forward it
all your friends and acquaintances.

Thanks and regards,
Aryama

Re: [Assam] CD songs: Rode Puabor Karone by Ruby Patel

2010-08-11 Thread Gautam Choudhury
I think we shouldnot mix the 'Artist Bhupen Hazarika' with the 'Bhupen Hazarika
in person'
at all. We simply cannot question about the talent and contribution of the
'Artist Bhupen Hazarika'. Also ,there is nothing wrong in the appeal on ' CD
songs: Rode Puabor Karone by Ruby Patel'. Rather, we should appreciate the
effort as  'The sale of proceeds of this CD will be partly donated to the
Nilakanta Shantipriya Hazarika trust and managements of two Primary Schools
of poverty stricken, unfortunate children of Panikhaity in Assam which have
been managed by Ruby Patel for the last 3 years through contributions of
generous public.

There may be lot of controversies on personal life of Bhupen Hazarika which
could not be denied. But, at the same time, we should not forget that our
Satriya Dance got the Classical Dance recognition during his tenure at Sangeet
Natak Academy only. In many a times, the people from other parts do recognise
us only because of him.

There are many intances of the great men having darker sides. But, at last,
people remember them only because of their greatness not for the wrong reason.

Please stop publicity about Bhupen Hazarika. He is the most betrayer of Assam.

I place 3 points.

1] In 1983, he sang Juye Pora 83 to bring Assamese youths for movement, but
he never stood for Assamese people. Instead he always rubbed his nose in the
feet of Indian State Machine.

2] In 1988, he sang in the Udito Suruj. The album was sponspored by ULFA for
their publicity through Cultural way. In that album, Hazarika sang along with
Dr Suresh Phukan of Sivasagar. Later on, in 1990 Dr Suresh Phukan was arrested
by Army for the album, but Hazarika was not. Hazarika again ran to rub his nose
in the feet of Indian State Machine. Dr Suresh Phukan, getting betrayed by
Crocodile tears salesman like Bhupen Hazarika, commited sucide in the custody
of Army, at Gauhati Medical College Hospital.

3] Hazarika always comes to Assam, when he needs money, needs free treatment.
When he gets these, he again leaves Assam.

I object against any kind of mercy towards Bhupen Hazarika. And I am ready for
all kind of controversy for it. All ready I have scold him twice in 2003
November and 2004 March. When he said Mor Jibonor Prothom Preyoxi aasil ejoni
Bihari sowali while Assamese womans were raped by Bhirais in train at Bihar,
and Bhupen Hazarika came to Assam to stop AAssamese extreeme sentiment,
following the order of his lords(i.e. Indian State Machine). But he never
showed his guts against the Indian State Machine.

3] Have ever Hazarika told Indian State Machine, Why you people are dominating
us and killing our people?

If Mamta Banarjee can oppose the Army Operation against Maoist in West Bengal,
why cant Bhupen  Hazarika oppose for the same happening in his motheerland for
last 3 decades?

 Dr.Bhupen Hazarika's Sangeet Kailas Patel

Late Kailas Patel marrying into an Assamese family began to appreciate and
admire musical culture of Assam. Eventually, Kailas with the collaboration of
Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and his brothers and sisters produced a CD of songs with
his wife Ruby titled ‘Nijaraparor Sur’.

In his life time Kailas always wanted to capture the lilting tunes and lyrics
of Assamese folk songs in records and tapes through which this rich musical
heritage could be preserved. His untimely death deprived Assam of his desired
contributions towards the preservation of Assamese cultural heritage.
However, after elapse of time, Ruby Patel with her brothers and sisters and
their third generation progeny collected Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s popular
choruses and recorded in their original tunes and music with the help of up
and coming established talented musicians in a CD titled ‘Rode Puabor Karone’
(to bask in the sun) to fulfil Kailas’s dreams.

The sale of proceeds of this CD will be partly donated to the Nilakanta

  Dear Ms. Shukla,

I was agast to read your article Murder most
 foul in the
 Deccan
  Chronicle
(July 15, 2008). Yes, I was agast as to how the
 poor JNU's campus
 dog was
bludgeoned to death, but I was more agast of your
 rather poor
 knowledge
  of,
and condescension toward the North Eastern states
 of India.

It maybe that you perhaps first need an object
 lesson in geography,
  possibly
history of India (you know - get to know your
 country), and not in the
least, a good lesson in humility.

First of all, you ought to know that the North
 Eastern States
 comprises
 of
many other states. In Assam, a North-Eastern
 State, for example, there
 are
many vegitarians, as well as non-vegitarians, and
 the population is
 mostly
Hindu. Manipur, another North-Eastern state, too
 is mostly Hindu. Dogs
certainly are not on the menu.

It is unfortunate, that you could not bring
 yourself to appreciate the
beauty of the landscape of Nagaland. You probably
 did not find it in
 your
heart to appreciate and study the culture, the
 language and customs of
 the
good people of Nagaland. If I could suggest, you
 might want to try and
  read
the volumes of good literature written by the
 British (many of the
army) on the North-Eastern states during the Raj.

You make some sweeping statements regarding the
 whole of the North
 East,
  when you declare,

  Apparently North-Eastern students at JNU
 regularly lynch and
 barbecue
  dogs.

Really! Have you ever met or heard of any Assamese
 or Manipuri who
 eats
dogs? I know, you may think 'they all look
 alike' and hence
 your
condescension and then clubbing of all the
 'natives' together.
 The fact,
however, is the people in the North-Eastern states
 are as varied and
different as other parts of the country, and so
 are their food habits.
  They
  come in different hues.
That is what makes India unique, as the country
 comprises of all hues,
shapes, forms, colors, religions, vegitarians, and
 non-vegitarians.

  And when you write
After combing the area, my husband visited
 the Gaon Burha
 (village
Pradhan) of the closest Naga settlement and spelt
 out all sorts of
 dire
consequences if the dog did not return. Twenty
 minutes later, Bindu
 was
  safely home.

Wow! isn't that something? Your husband showed
 them, didn't
 he? Your army
husband brought down the full weight and force of
 the whole Indian
 army
 on
the Gaon Burha and threatened the poor guy with
 dire
 consequences.
One wonders, with all this condescension raining
 down on the poor
 chap,
  what
  those threats might have been?
Beat up the natives? Burn down their silly
 hutments? Kill, rape and
  plunder
  their sordid villages? What?

Ms. Shukla, what you and your husband may not know
 is that the Indian
 Army
is NOT yours or your husband's personal army.
 The Army has a role,
 and
hopefully that role does NOT consist of rescuing
 irish setters of some
  army
officer. Your very tone suggests of condescension
 and of 'dealing
 with
 the
natives'. At the very least you might want to
 get off that high
 horse and
descend the mighty steps of Indraprastha.

Just like many people, we too love our pets and
 would prefer that
  animals
not be ill-treated. Your concern for the pet dogs
 of JNU is admirable.

Dear Gautam,

Thanks for your mail. You are right. When I first published the “ Indiawijzer
”(in Dutch) in 1992 it was a small book of 142 pages. I had difficulties
obtaining information from India – especially from Assam . As I am a layman
trying to be “jack of all trades,” I did not want to put something on paper
without going through some published materials. Almost all the artciles
covering business, yoga, culture, dance, philosphy etc. published in the
Indiawijzer is written by me.

As I could not obtain the necessary information at that time it was not
included. The second edition of Indiawijzer was published in 1999. It is a book
of 416 pages. During this publication also I had difficultiy in obtaining
information. Another problem was the time. The Dutch law demands that before
you publish you have to take permission. To give you an idea I wrote more than
3.000 letters to collect information and get permission. With Internet it is
now easier to get information. But still you need permission.

The Indiawijzer is the work of one person from collecting information,
web-design, programming , maintenance everything is done by me. If needed it is
updated almost daily (atleast the Cultural Agenda of Indian programmes in the
Netherlands ). At present the website has more than 3.000 webpages and still
have to update/add more than 1000 pages. In the coming months I hope to update
the chapter on Indian Dance and Music. It is not only the chapter on dance but
also chapters on musical instruments, types of vocal music, new artists active
in the netherlands etc. have to be included. Thanks for your suggestions.

Greetings,
Wahid da

Yes..I also support your views. Even in Assam, the
attitude of the people are changing. People are no
longer waiting for the Govt. jobs as in the past.
Better educated people are opting for the pvt jobs
than the govt jobs. If it gets the right direction, I
am sure Asom(Axom) will surely flourish.

 C'da,

 systemically wrong with Indian governance

While I do agree that a lot needs to be done in this
 area, the idea of
making a complete turn-around of areas plagued by
 systemic problems
 will take a long time.
The Indian Governmental system does have checks and
 balances, so the
problem really lies with many of those who are in
 charge
 (ministers/bureaucrats). Any system will have
 loopholes, but it has
become a past time in India for people to take
 advantage of these
 loopholes.

In the end, systemic problems are caused by a few
 functions,
 (a) bureaucrats and ministers who are corrupt and
 inept
 (b) a populace that is willing to take whatever is
 dished out and
reelecting the same scoundrels every election cycle
 and
 (c) a business climate where a lot of attention
 seems to be diverted
to duping/taking advantage of the government
 (country) , people and
 the exchequer.

Yes, I agree with what Murthy says inspite of the
 fact that there may
be that polititcian that is willing to put the
 country's need before
 himself.

Suresh Prabhu of Shiv Sena accepted the criticism
but said the need of the
hour was to focus on reforming the politics, its
 institutions and its
functionaries rather than indulge in mud-slinging

Prabhu's statement seems to be more for the press
 and it is a good
suggestion. The Shiv Sena have not been stalwarts
 either. There have
been many accusations of corruption and extortion on
 businesses and
 Bollywood leveled against the.

I would rather tend to side with Murthy on this.

BTW- all this begs the question: If this is systemic
 and the problems
are pervasive, how is it that some states are
 registering higher
growth rates (than national average), while others
 are far below - 3rd
world standards. Many of the ones that have NOT done
 well are in the
northern/Central states - from where the GOI is
 supposedly controlled.
The article I sent on 'Regional Imbalance' is a
 case in point.
Lack of growth and development cannot be ALL because
 of poor
governance. To poor governance, if one were to add a
 good measure of a
few other unfavorable ingredients, we could see a
 Bihar in the making
all over India and in every state.

It must have an Assamese name. Does anybody know

*W*hat is good news? The news of a suicide committed
 by a 28-year-old boy
protesting against the misdeeds of his father who
 misappropriated public
money and later on landed in the dragnet of the
 police? For the renowned
writer Saurav Kumar Chaliha, that news served as a
piece of good news and it
became a source of inspiration for him for quite a
 long time. Aghast with
the developments that took place following the Assam
 agitation and the
cutthroat competition among the Assamese newspapers
 to raise their
circulation figures through sensational news like
 those of mayhem,
corruption and all sorts of degeneration?that too
 all blown up to attract
the readers, Chaliha said in his write-up that he
 had virtually given up
reading those newspapers. He had also given up the
 thought of writing
 anything for those newspapers.
But, he was not spared. His longing to be in peace,
to be in the comfort of
an afternoon siesta, was disturbed one day by the
 telephone call of an
executive editor of an Assamese daily. The executive
 editor wanted Chaliha
to write something that could instil hope among the
 readers on the very
 first day of a year.
And thus came the *Bhal Khabar* ? Good News ? as an
 article from Chaliha's
pen that gave vent to his despondency and, in the
 process, his detestation
towards the Assamese print media. He cited the above
news item as one of the
good news that might instil some hope among the
 readers for carrying the
information of some sort of protest against the
 repulsive developments of
 the society.
Filmmaker Altaf Mazid has made a short film based
 on this very critique of
Chaliha with the same title, *Bhal Khabar*. The film
 was screened at the
Guwahati Press Club on November 20. It is basically
 a personal film. The
cinematic narration of the contents of the article
 hinges between story
telling and documentation. With the narration of the
 content of the article
done by Chaliha himself, the film goes on with an
 attempt at communicating
with the viewers through poeticised fictional
 visuals.
Let us cite some examples. The request of the
 executive editor was a sort
of a cruel command that made the writer come to
 terms with reality. The
filmmaker explained this with the video clippings
 from a film that narrated
the hijacking of a plane. The state of the writer's
 mind while he was
penning the article is also described with a train
 that moves diagonally. To
Altaf, this is done to suggest that man's feelings
can never be made to move
 in a set manner.
Explaining, he said that he had taken the article
as a painting or as a
poem that stirred his feelings. It is his personal
film and he and his wife
Zabeen put their personal savings to make the film.
 It is an investment
dedicated to one's love for cinema

Yes, you guessed it right - I am from Guwahati only.
In last 2-3 years some developments have been going

after the Asian Car Rally. The GNB road is being

impossible. But, since the activities are going on in
this rainy season, the GNB road condition is becoming
bad. There are 2 big storm water drains being
constructed - one at Noonmati where a canal is also
constructed through small hillock and the other is at
Narengi. Authorities have planned to drain out the
excess water during the rainy days to Brahmaputra. One
can hope the flood problem will be reduced once the
drains are completed.

The communication to upper Assam from Guwahati have
also imporved in recent days. One can travel upto
Tinsukia in 6-7 hours by Volvo buses. We have
Jan-Satabdi train running from Guwahati to Jorhat. It
have A/C chair car facility. The Rajdhani Express is
now extended to Dibrugarh. One can also go upto Led by
Inter-City Express (train) which is an overnite
journey. I think you already know that we have now
local trains to Nagaon and Bongaigaon. The office
goers are the daily commuters there.

Job oppurtunity in private sectors have slightly
increased mainly for the lower grades. The higher
qualified people have to venture out to Bangalore,
Hyderabad etc. for better oppurtunity. However, one
good sign is there - qualified people will no longer
sit idle here. They will promptly go outside Assam
which was not the case in the eighties and nineties.

That is all for today. There will be lot of things
which we could not appreciate from here. Those things
could be noticed from your angle. Kindly let us also
know some of your feelings about Guwahati/Assam these
days.

I dont know whether you will be senior to me or not.
Since, most of the netters are calling you 'baideo' -
I am doing the same. For your reference - I am of 1978
matric batch from Assam.

Glad to hear from you and to know that you liked the
one-stop site for all the newspapers, Gautam. Thank
you!

I am guessing you're from Guwahati? How is everything
there? Would love to hear anything and everything
about it.

I know banks open twice a day nowadays, with a break
in between and State Bank does not have an ATM machine
that takes cards from other banks - but only their
cards, if you have an account (and money in it, of
course! :)) with them. About types of buses that run
in and out of town, fare rates, how long it takes to
reach Dibrugarh from Guwahati (for example) - since
the highways are much better now, anything!

Didn't mean to put the pressure on you, but the
questions go to everyone. And you can ask me
questions too. Since we have this wonderful net, might
as well take advantage of it and communicate with each
other way to communicate with people from afar but
with common background/interests, couldn't be any
better.

Thanks again.

Thank you Alpana Baideo. This is really a useful
website. It is surprising to find that though there
are so many newspapers published from Assam
thesedays, a few only have there web-version.

Hello again, Everybody: Just wanted to share this web

you. Many of the new Assamese newspapers (and the
English ones) are included (like, The Assam Tribune,
The Sentinel, The Telegraph, Aji, Ajir Oxom etc., but
no 'Doinik Oxom' and 'Oxom Bani'). Anyway, here it

2005-09-03 Thread Gautam Choudhury
Baideo,

Sorry to reply you so late. In fact I tried to reply
you on the day I received your mail. It didn't go then
for some reasons unknown to me. After that somehow I
was not able to reply you. Anyway I am trying to reply
your mail now.

Yes, you guessed it right - I am from Guwahati only.
In last 2-3 years some developments have been going on
in Guwahati. The roads condition have improved a lot
specially after the Asian Car Rally. The GNB road is
being widened. Till 1 year ago, we thought it was next
to impossible. But, since the activities are going on
in this rainy season, the GNB road condition is
becoming bad. There are 2 big storm water drains being
constructed - one at Noonmati where a canal is also
constructed through a small hillock and the other is
at Narengi. Authorities have planned to drain out the
excess water during the rainy days to Brahmaputra. One
can hope that the flood problem will be reduced once
the drains are completed.

The communication to upper Assam from Guwahati have
also imporved in recent days. One can travel upto
Tinsukia in 6-7 hours by Volvo buses. Though I am not
sure the fare will be around Rs. 360. We have
Jan-Satabdi train running from Guwahati to Jorhat. It
has A/C chair car facility. The Rajdhani Express is
now extended to Dibrugarh. One can also go upto Ledo
by Inter-City Express (train) which is an overnite

I found that all my mails are coming to the bulk
folder instead of 'inbox' after the group was shifted
to assamnet.org. Kindly look into the matter.

The website from US State department you have
 referred list the
Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO) dated March
 23, 2005. Good news
ULFA and assam.net is that ULFA is not listed there.
However we have seen recent news in this net where
 it was reported
that ULFA has been included in the  FTO list and
 there had been further
news report in the net where ULFA was appealing to
 US Govt to take its
 name off the list.
Can you or anybody elaborate on this development
 and what is the
 status now?
