Re: Liam's Official YouTube Streaming Thread (major Stream on Thursday)

Hi all:I will be streaming The last of Us Part 2 on Thursday evening/Friday morning. I've put the times in several differen ttime zones in post 1.At the moment, the stream does not have any age restriction marked on it, but I may have to age restrict on Youtube if there are any issues. The game is extremely graphic, so it may happen that I have to limit the audience age.I will also be streaming on Twitch as well, so if there are people who prefer that to YouTube, that will also be an option.For those who don't know, this game contains an absolutely massive selecton of accessibility options including a suite of options for blind and visually impaired players. I hope you can all join me for what promises to be one of the biggest and most important releases in the history of accessible mainstream gaming.

Re: I get anxious over small things.

No clue.  Here's another one for ya, and this one happened to me at the most inconvenient moment.  I decided I was going to try and play it smart and keep my job related stuff on google chrome and use firefox for personal web browsing and the like.  the reason for this is simple: since I use google meets which does work to some extent when on work conference calls and the like, and since I'm generally invited to said conferences using my work email, and since I don't want to have to sign out of my personal gmail account every time just to have to sign into my business gmail account just to access said conferences, I figured I'd just keep one on one and the other on the other.So, to shorten the above, business gmail on chrome, personal gmail on firefox.  Bare in mind that up until I decided to try and put this change into effect I had already used FF on google meets with my business account and done so without any hiccup.  I sign into google chrome with my business account thinking this should be a piece of cake; I shouldn't have any issues.  Wrong.  Chrome is not able to detect my default audio device.  IN fact, not only can it not detect my default audio device; it detects none.  Why?  I have no, friggin, idea.  Switch back to FF and it's working just fine.  I thought maybe it might be a windows firewall issue but saw no notifications in windows security.Want to know what fixes it?  I have to set my audio-interface as my communications device!  Never in my wildest dreams... I mean it's like the more advanced we get with our computers and technology, the more hoops we have to jump through just to get them to work properly!  This audio router issue I mentioned above?  I'm willing to bet anyone a free lunch that, had I used it in 7 instead of 10 I wouldn't have run into the issues I ran into on this guy's computer a couple of nights ago.  I wish I could figure out what the real culprit is here, since I can get audio router to work with FF on my end and I'm running win 10.  The only huge difference I see is that I have an audio-interface and that guy's only using a cheap external USB card.  Of course, the reason that doesn't exactly make sense to me is that it does selectively rout other bits of software successfully; it's just having a cow with FF.

Yep. Same thing with Windows 10 and its updates. I hear all these stories of how people have some pretty big issues, and so far I haven't had any of them. Sometimes it's the way each machine is configured, drivers and all. Now I wonder why that program wouldn't work right with Firefox on your friend's system. Weird.

So, unless you guys who love this dramafest haven't noticed, it's just you guys who want it back, a tiny handful inside an already fractured community.  Someday, I seriously hope the lot of you can grow up and face life the way it was meant to be faced and not assume that it owes you everything, world included.and yes, I said what I said and meant what I said.  This isn't the only topic of this nature.  It's not inventive; it's not creative.  It's not productive.  It's nothing but a waste of cyberspace and a load of time you could be spending coding the stupid thing if you were so inclined to.  For all the gripe about how you want it back so badly, you really must not since you haven't bothered to pick up BGT, just to try and get this show on the road.  You all love to talk smack but you never seem to want to walk to get things done.  I could fill this forum with games I'd like to see come back, or games I'd l;ike to see made accessible, or games I'd like to see get coded, but really, what does it prove other than the fact that I have a ton of time on my hands I honestly don't care about?  If you can prove to me that a topic of this nature produces results, be my guest.  Thus far though, it hasn't, and it shows no signs of doing so anytime soon.  If I were the bunch of you who want it back I'd shut up, wait for the waters to cool and see if something happens as the result of them not being boiling hot anymore.

after reading a few times, let's see if I understand this correctly. The best way to get rid of globals is putting them as default keyword parameters of functions. If you can't do that, use a dependency injection so that at least the program  won't be able to modify anything it shouldn't be able to.

Haven't had this happen to me, however it sounds very annoying. I mean microsoft... does it really need to be this... invasive? 1. Its your computer, owned by you.2. One shouldn't be forced into having a microsoft account just because they own a windows laptop or desktop... My only theory as to why this... Maybee piracy? I mean, maybee to prevent piracy of windows? Just a guess, although its pritty out there. I reead somewhere that roughly 30percent of windows where pirated, weather at home or workplace... dunno if this is worse or better than the date said article was posted, but piracy is the only reason I can think for microsoft to show that prompt. Another reason that comes to mind, security purposes maybee, such as a timed out session or something? Although then again, if this was the case, why ask the user to create a microsoft account if this was for security...  I do agree however,  its beyond annoying, not to mention ridiculous.On a joking note: what's next microsoft? Requiring a key so that people can unlock the lids of their pcs because of a padlock designed by microsoft to lock the  lids of said pcs to supposedly keep them safe? Really, what's next? Lol.

Re: I get anxious over small things.

As far as logic and computers are concerned I'd say that they're only as logical as the humans that make them and the hardware and software that powers them, meaning you're left at the mercy of yet more humans.  Sometimes a restart fixs all of your issues while at others it creates worse ones than the ones you started off with.  Sometimes the fix you applied previously on one machine does not work quite as nicely on the next.an example of that last one is that recently I downloaded a little bit of software called AudioRouter; it really does what the title suggests.  I actually have no use for it but was testing it for a friend.  It worked nicely on my PC.  Every piece of software that was open and which I attempted to route to another audio source present on my PC went willingly and with no fuss.  Then I go stick that on my friend's PC and what do you suppose happened?  Originally he wanted it to route firefox and the videos he was listening to on youtube to an external soundcard of his choice, but no matter how hard we tried, FF just wouldn't budge.  We thought it might be the whole software just playing stupid with his PC, but when we tried to route other programs they worked quite nicely!The stupid thing for me is that I had just done a live demonstration of how it would work and it really looked straightforward.  I told my friend as much, so the whole thing made me feel like an absolute failure because for all I tried that night, two nights ago now, in fact, and we tried for hours, we couldn't get it to work!

Nevertheless I appreciate everyone's time helping my dumb teenage mind take in complex or at least different logic in new ways I am not use to. Re: I really don’t understand time signature

Exactly, UltraLeetJ gets it.  Sometimes I feel super limited myself even with all my knowledge.  I think one of the more interesting things I struggle with, particularly when it comes to developing/scoring a soundtrack is how one goes about using time signatures and the like to express various things and creating what are generally refered to as motifs.  If you need examples of what I'm talking about consider the Imperial march.  It's notes are scattered throughout much of the starwars series.  It's at times when it's not clearly at the foreground that I strugle to decipher precisely what time sigs are being used, and I honestly think that's something you could probably only get through looking at the music, though I freely admit I could be wrong.

Mods please forgive the double posting. Well I checked I can't find the website either. I wish I had known about this, I would've loved to read some of these, I love batman and all that but I've only ever been able to see the movies of superheroes. The twitter is still there for now, what do you think of contacting them? Very nicely of course, we don't want another silversword disaster. I will reach out on twitter because I'd love to buy comics from them and support a small business. It's a win-win for both of us.

Well, I finally got the client to work when loading N64 ROMS. I had to downgrade to Windows 8.1 to install the appropriate driver, as the driver I have is not provided in Windows 10. Now, I have another issue, and that is with latency. The game audio stutters a lot, and I know some of you have experienced this issue also. If anyone has managed to fix it, please let me know.

@Socheat thanks, and your assessment is true.Thing is, Paladin (or some variant thereof) has existed for nearly six years now. Unique story which I've eluted to aside, it was the only audio game I was playing until 2016 when Manamon came out. Coupled with the simplistic mechanics as compared to Manamon and you have a recipe for mastery.I don't have the time nor patience nor desire to master the ins and outs of every creature, and I feel that's a good thing as in the long run it would detract from the experience. I can still spend 30 hours on a Manamon II run and experience unexpected challenges and situations due to lack of knowledge, and that's more fun than being able to outclass people in competitive play or instinctively remember every tamer's team and be prepared with exactly the right creature and move for every situation.I love speed runs and demonstrations of mastery, but mastering a game on that level ruins casual enjoyment in the long run, and there aren't enough games in our little bubble for me to justify doing that.

If we were talking about cloans, spreading cloans, giving links to other versions of the game, boasting about hosting servers, etc. then i would be ok with you reporting the topic. But we're not so, your report is dumb, has no actual ground.

I never said that performers or pros have a frustration with theory, but they do not exploit it to its full potential, too often. And one thing is to know theory inside out and get a+ on every exam, which is never a bad thing, but the debate here is centered on another thing, which  is to have the abilities to be able to transmit things precisely and concisely... you sadly really do not see much of that in the teaching world.

Re: issue with multiple variables in if statement

Also, here is a really good way to look at why I'm so against globals.  Say you come to us for help.  And you give us something like:import globals as gb

# 30 lines of stuff using gbAnd you say "It's broken, I want it to do X, but it does Y".  Then either we maybe spot the problem, or we have to ask you for the other 500 lines of your program to see what might be setting the globals to the wrong values and spend 10 times as long on it or more.Most bad ideas in programming work fine at first.  You find out they're bad ideas because eventually something breaks and the bad idea magnifies the mess, not because the bad idea is what broke it.  Globals are like rocket fuel.  You might get to the moon with them, but one tiny spark is going to blow up the entire rocket.  You'd never put rocket fuel in anything but rockets because it likes to blow things up, and yeah it might power your car for a while, but when it goes it's taking out the whole city block.  Only, to complete this analogy, there are also 5 other ways to get to the moon that don't risk blowing up the astronauts , either.

Re: issue with multiple variables in if statement

@27No. But users shouldn't be doing that anyway.  If a user wants to change the defaults, they can just:def my_dialog(message):
return dialog(message, my_setting=bla, my_other_setting=bla)And then use my_dialog instead wherever they want a dialog with those settings.  I have it return the other function so that if you ever decided to have dialog start returning something, all the my_dialog variants just start working, too.Changing the defaults goes wrong as soon as two parts of the program try to change them at the same time, at which point it actually depends on the order that files get imported by Python as to which one "wins", and god help you if both spots only change some of them because then you get a nice mix of the values instead of all one or all the other.  So not only did I just get rid of your globals and prevent a bug, I added the ability for different parts of the program to have different sorts of dialogs.Also I missed a bunch of commas between the arguments in 26, if you try that you'll want to add them in.

Re: issue with multiple variables in if statement

@25To eliminate the globals in your example, take this part:default_duration=3000
auto_disappear=True
disable_auto_for_message=False
extend_time=3000
request_extra=False
def dialog(message):And turn it into:def dialog(message,
default_duration=3000
auto_disappear=True
disable_auto_for_message=False
extend_time=3000
request_extra=False):Which will work exactly the same except that the caller of the function can now do things like:dialog("hi", auto_disappear = False)It also makes sure that something in one file that's trying to change the dialog settings doesn't mess with something else in another file trying to change the dialog settings, because by putting them in the function you just get the defaults unless they're specified.Then you rename default_duration to duration because it's juskt duration now.  These are called keyword parameters, if you want to be able to Google this.But more generally, at your level of programming globals.py is probably your best bet, just because you are still having trouble with even small stuff.  But the way you get rid of globals is via default function parameters like the above or putting them in a class instead.  You can for example write a Game class, then pass the Game class to all the things in the game when they get created.  Like this:class Game:
def __init__(self):
self.global_thing = 5

class Mob:
def __init__(self, game):
self.game = game

g = Game()
m = Mob(g)This is called dependency injection.  The mob depends on the things stored in the game, so we give it the game, because that's the thing it depends on to exist.  This seems useless, but the thing it lets you do is tell what can modify the globals without having to read the entire program: either something has the ability to touch a game or it doesn't, and if it doesn't it can't go behind the reader's back and do it anyway.  There are more advanced patterns than this, but this is a really basic one to get started with.I think it's also important to distinguish between settings and globals.  If you have a conf.py with a bunch of settings in it that you set before you run it, that's fine, and all the other languages call those constants.  The reason globals are problematic is that when you start writing to them, it becomes literally impossible to figure out what can and can't touch them without reading literally the whole program.To put this in perspective, work's codebase is probably around 10 lines.  We easily have less than 100 globals that are used between multiple files, most of those are hidden behind functions that tightly control access.  Of the variables that aren't used between multiple files, 99% of those are for integrating with our metrics provider.  This isn't some work trade secret either, it's just how big codebases are, because anyone who is using globals all the time didn't get to 10 lines before they went out of business due to all the bugs.

@6I'm pretty sure for the Android version of React Native you can just use the terminal.  I know someone who is using VSCode for all of it for iOS as well, but he's sighted and running on a mac because of the XCode requirement.  React and React Native are good and accessible technologies, in so far as it goes, but the audio landscape is disappointing.  No one sighted makes games in them because sighted people want/need lower level access for the kinds of graphics they expect so (at least as of my last serious look) there's not even a good enough crappy sighted game audio thing to use.

Re: issue with multiple variables in if statement

@23That's much better.  But pulling those globals from the top of the file into function parameters as I demonstrated would make this both more flexible and more readable simultaneously, as you would also gain the ability for anything using this dialog to customize the settings at runtime.For globals importing:importglobals as bshould work.  But the right answer is to not have a globals.py, you're probably just not yet at the point where how to get rid of it is very obvious (but google dependency injection for one good design pattern for it).

Re: Android app and game development getting started

I don't know much about mobile app development, but I've been meaning to try React Native. I wonder how easy it would be to spin up an app using built components and the command line. I read that you would have to have an installation of Android Studio for Android apps, and obviously XCode for iOS apps. I'm not sure how much setup, if any, would have to be done on the GUI side of Android Studio or if having the toolchain there is enough.Of course, this would just be for non-gaming apps, but something worth trying I guess. Maybe there's some RN libraries to handle sound. Wouldn't know how advanced it would be though.

2020-06-15 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Off-topic room : Draq via Audiogames-reflector

Re: I get anxious over small things.

I can definitely relate to the anxiety thing. It usually triggers when something happens with technology and I can't figure out how or why, or if I did something and don't know how to reverse it.Here's an example. I was messing around with saving the results of a tracert command to a file. After I was done I thought nothing of it for a month. However, a month later I was looking at my startup programs and found one named with the first word in my user account's name. Strange. At this point it's a curiosity.When I went to the file location, I found a file in the users folder with the first word in my user account's name with no extension. Totally weird. Now it's a bit of a mystery that I want to solve.So, I opened it up with Notepad to see if I could figure out what the contents was, and it was the output of the syntax of the tracert command. Even weirder. I remembered that I was messing with tracert that day, so I went ahead and deleted it since it doesn't really need to be there as far as I know.After deleting it, it no longer showed in my list of startup programs, and upon restart nothing seemed to go wrong. But of course, my brain has to wonder why such a thing happened in the first place, and that's where the anxiety starts. I ended up restoring it and moving it somewhere else.So, I started investigating. I created and moved a text file to the users folder. It didn't show up in startup. I moved the original file back to users, which restored the startup entry. I looked through the startup tab of Task Manager, and it informed me that the startup type was folder.I looked in my startup folder as well as the common startup folder, and there was nothing leading to that file.I even checked the registry after researching about startup items further, and still nothing points to that file.I'm no closer to figuring out why a file in my users folder with no extension named with the first word in my user account's name and the contents of the syntax of the tracert command appears in my startup programs than I was when I started, but everything works fine.You'd think that should be enough for my brain to calm down, but no. It latches on to the fact that this is an unknown with no logical answer that I can see, even though computers are entirely logical devices. I may never know what happened, and the anxiety will eventually fade on its own.So, yes. All this to say that anxiety is a strange beast indeed.

Re: issue with multiple variables in if statement

@21Unpacking is a bad idea with respect to naming because you must then remember what functions are and aren't returning tuples, and what the order of the returned fields is.  Generally you don't unpack in Python when developing bigger things for this reason.   Multiple assignment is fine:health_percent, max_health = player.get_health_percent(), player.get_max_health()because there's no question about mixing up the order.I wouldn't suggest Zarvox do this, but if you yourself want a better way you can use namedtuple or attrs to make lightweight objects that you can return from functions that want to return multiple values.Sometimes unpacking is warranted, for example returning 3d coordinates or when dealing with a function that must execute atomically ALA Django's create or update functionality (which isn't just calling create followed by update if create fails).  But it should be used with incredibly extreme care.  It saves a line or two in the moment, but in the moment almost never matters when programming anything that's meant to last.

I mean I think you're overthinking it a bit. I would also map things to dictionaries where it would make sense. Also packing variables where it makes sense.Doing that and unpacking from function, like if I had a function that I knew would return information about the player's health like their current and max, to say, maybe calculate a percentage of their health to take rather than a hard number, I could be like:curhealth, maxhealth = player.get_health()

Re: issue with multiple variables in if statement

You will get better at this through practice, but for starters separate "words" with _.  When using abbreviations,  this makes it clear what is and isn't separated: for example automsg vs. auto_msg.  Note that some of the rest of this is specific to Python, and that in general languages and the communities around them develop conventions.  That said I'm not getting way into Python-specific idiom, and if you go to Rust or C++ or whatever else with these guidelines it'll be fine.Consistency is more important than anything, but functions are usually verb-noun: get_health, not health_get.I haven't picked apart your original code, but also note that globals are bad, not just for the obvious reasons but also because naming them is hard.  Python functions can take keyword arguments with default values:def say(message, loud = False, braille = False, immediate = False):
# stuff

say("hello", loud = True)
say("braille", braille = True)
say("hello", loud = True, immediate = True)If you do it this way it's obvious that the function parameters are for the messaging function and so they don't need to say anything about messaging.  The order doesn't matter as long as the names match.  Other languages will usually have a pattern of some sort for how you handle default arguments to functions; some don't, but the ones that don't have any way to handle it are very much in the minority.  If you want to be even more readable and/or plan to distribute the code to others:def say(message, loud = False, immediate = False, braille = False):
"""Communicate a message through a screen reader interface.

message: The message to say.
loud: If true, also play an alarm.
braille: If true, send this message to a braille display instead.
immediate: If true, interrupt any previous messages.

If no screen reader is present, throws NoScreenReaderError.
"""
# my code here.Which immediately tells you and anyone else what's going on.  Also if you format that right and set up Sphinx that'll give you a nice HTML manual.Python classes are camel case with leading capitals: MyClass.  Errors (things you intend to raise, which inherit from Exception) are MyError, rarely MyException.Long variable names are better than short variable names.  If you're going to use abbreviations, they should always be the same abbreviation for your entire program.Introduce consistent terminology, and use it everywhere.  Where possible, use standard terminology, but if you don't know what it is always at least use the same thing.  For example controls aren't controls in one file and widgets in another file.  For a game example, you shouldn't use npc, mob, enemy, robot, etc. for the things that aren't the player just because.  Npc being a base class for enemy and ally is fine, for example, or robot being special might mean it deserves a term, because in those cases there's a reason for it being different.You should always have a reason for the words you pick, and it shouldn't be just offhand.  If it's a loop variable using i or j is fine. The reason for that is that everyone else in programming land does.  If it's a variable that's going to be used for 2 lines, tmp is fine, because after 2 lines it doesn't matter, and tmp is a good name for something that's going to be used right now and then never again.  But the more code it's going to be in, the more important it is to be able to justify to yourself why you made whatever choice you made.  If it's a function, method, or class it should *always* have a justified name.  If it's going to be used beyond this file it should also be named taking into account that no one wants to play hunt the name to find out what it does.If something is private to a module, class, etc. Python names it like _my_private_function.  This doesn't have any special meaning or anything, it's just convention that lets everyone know you're not supposed to touch it from outside.Never have a variable hold two different types of things.  Don't assign a number and then assign a string later.  While Python allows you to, it's confusing if variables are sometimes one kind of thing and sometimes another.  There is very rarely a good reason but the chances of you encountering them yourself right now are basically nonexistant, I don't have an example offhand, and if I try to give you one it's going to be contrived and probably involve pretty serious metaprogramming stuff that no one does outside libraries.You aren't finding a class or something though because there are no hard and fast rules.  Some of programming is science.  Some of programming is art.  This is the part that's art.  Everyone does this a little bit differently.  It's like learning to speak a second language, a little bit.  The first things you learn are how the for loop works, and that's all well and good, you can get it from the programming textbook.  But then you have to start learning not to

Apocalypse alpha, playable text based single player zombie game.

Okay Here is one I discovered a while ago. I was going to post about it in the world of legends topic, since the game is similar, however I thought it was better off in it's own thread. The game can be found Here on Itch.io, you get to make your way through an apocalypse city, gather loot, make new weapons, complete quests, journey on, get survivors and play strategically, all via use of numbered menues, just like in world of legends or warsim.The one major reason I am not putting this in new releases can be sommed up in two words: "ascii art!"The game has so much of it, it's actually hard to play. I had to do a lot of reading the screen with the curser, and hitting enter past screens of text. this also meant I wasn't sure whether I was losing out because I was just inexperienced at the game, or because I was missing something in the ascii. Though the game hasn't been updated in three years, it might still be worth contacting the developer, since I gather this one went sadly unknown, even though it won some competition or other. Either way, here it is if people want to give it a try, just remember to beware of the ascii.

As for questionable intentions, the thing is open source, so it can be examined all you want. Best yet, you can just host your instance and not worry about who gets access to the information at all. Now of course not everyone is able to do that, but it's an option.

Re: Gardening, Foraging, Basket Weaving and More!

With crafts it varies. You don't get xp for basic resource gathering like mining or foraging beyond the tiny amount used when you raise the skill, which you can get high pretty quickly. However, for using any of the crafting skills that turn one resource into another you get XP, up to several thousand xp for difficult tasks like smelting or gardening. There is also a repeatable mission given by the shopkeeper in crafters forge, where he tells you an item to craft and you have to go and make it for him, which can give good xp. In fairness, you could probably get more Xp slaying monsters in the time it took to make the item, but it's a fun way to advance your crafting skills and reward your character, whilst providing an alternative activity to monster murder  nonetheless

The seed number is only needed if you want to run a particular run with the exact same conditions. Ascension numbers are separate, and gradually unlock as you successfully complete earlier ones.

Re: I get anxious over small things.

@Nocturnus, basicly I found the sounds to be way to loud and music like and, I dunno; they weren't nice to listen to.I'd prefer something that was much quieter or the screen reader or sapi telling you things.I made my own soundpack with my voice but when TWBlue started up, it wouldn't play the ready sound, instead it played the image sound and another one. I tried the beta version, and a similar thing happened but the ready sound played.I'm completely fine with it, if I really want to use twitter again, I can use the site.

Your sts is in full-screen. OCR can't read it. I've not messed with ascension, don't you also need a seed number? The reason I don't want to include those files is because you don't want to bloat your package I would think. With text the spire, base mod and Communications, I'd let the other person decide on what other mods they'd like to add to their purchase.Here's the github page for Text the Spire, maybe ask him about that loop. https://github.com/Wensber/TextTheSpire

Re: I get anxious over small things.

@Nocturnus oh yeah, audacity is great because of that exact reason, you just press r and go, once it's all set up of course.Also, you can scrub through the audio with audacity, you can't do that with reaper, well you ccan but as far as I know you won't hear anything, you can when you press page up or down though, that's strange.

No, I'm using ocr on the main window and left clicking it.  you can then hit embark to start.  just remember the modifiers as you can't view them again.  though there are only three, so that's not difficult.  have you messed with ascension yet?  I think the format is:start ironclad 1, but I could be wrong.  I know they start with minor differences, but yeah.completed my first run, and now I'm gonna pull myself away ffor the night before I can't.
