I had to teach myself how to use VoiceOver when I was first exposed to iOS (iOS 4 to be exact). There was (and still is to my knowledge) no built-in how-to, and I didn't know of any accessibility resources at the time. I know the VoiceOver settings page is a bit more descriptive now, but there's still a large gap for new, inexperienced iOS users to fall into if they're handed an iOS device and given little more to go off of. Say what you will about Android accessibility , but the TalkBack tutorial is a brilliant launchpad for new users, and I feel that Apple would do well to implement something similar.

Re: letting pygame accept key presses regardless of the keybored language?

Pygame uses events for keys being pressed or released. Lucia catches these and tracks them so you can use BGT's polling functions. That means that Lucia either tracks the state of arbitrary keys, or it only tracks the defined keycodes.I'd ignore it entirely and use the events directly, but Lucia probably clears the event queue when updating. The events give the keycode, which does not necessarily have to correspond to any particular defined constant. I'm not sure of a better way to identify which key is being pressed than with a configuration routine, though. I suppose the upside would be that it means the controls can be configured however the player wants?

Re: Why are there no audiogames in the fighting games genre?

*reads replies* ... *reads notes from the 2000s* ... *drowns in tears but somehow keeps typing anyway*It's true, though.re: sidescrollers ... no, we really, really haven't. The closest we've come to mainstream sidescrollers is BK3 and Tombhunter. And anyone who's gone anywhere near a Megaman game knows why I said "closest".I'm beginning to think that Camlorn was right all along: we just plain can't. Too much detail to manage with audio. For all -0.2 of you who care: the horrible fighting system in the Jeqocon console works as follows. Hit areas are an integer, containing the following bits: high, mid, low, near, far, near2, far2. For some stupid, stupid reason, I made "hitsBehind" into a separate boolean, rather than a hitArea bit. Most things are binary: are you near or far from your opponent? OnLeft or on right? Crouching? Aerial? (If I'm feeling like being confusing, a move can be both crouching and aerial, which does not work the way you'd expect). The near2 and far2 bits make the attack hit continuously in that spot for the first half of the move, to simulate projectiles. That was good enough to sorta-kinda feel like Marvel Vs Capcom, which is what I was going for when I threw it together in an hour in summer 2008 because I was tired of failing to make anything anyone else would care about, and just wanted to play something. It survived and expanded as long/much as it did because it turned out that just having an engine I could easily make content for made making content much, much simpler. ... Maybe I should open-source it with a character creation guide? Creating characters is easy. (creating good, well-balanced characters who play like fighting game characters, on the other hand, is more challenging.)

*does not read replies* two reasons: because there are already playable mainstream fighting games, and because approximately 0 audio game devs are capable of making anything comparable.Audio games are made because we want to play something but can't. We can play Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter, so why go to the trouble of making our own?(Not that I haven't tried. But I find myself using my mac 85% of the time. Anyway, it's really fast, it doesn't get hot and it's great for xCode development of course. Besides, the memory is unified so if you want to play intensive games I'm guessing you can, I don't have any to try at the moment.

Re: frustrated with blindness (read post if you want context)

Society is only a smalll, mostly tiny part of the problem. The main problems blindness   has, are caused directly as a result  of being blind, e.g not being able to drive, not by society. Fact is, making things accessible for a blind person is more challenging than say, making something  accessible to someone in a wheel chair. The number of things that have to be made accessible, and the scope of those accomidations is significant. Like for example, a whole new code of writing had to be invented just so the blind could read.

Re: Scarlet Shells, concept demo 1!

Personally, I hope PC ultimately decides to add even a tiny bit of a voice cast to the game. Omar's KS goal was well-surpassed, and I'm not too proud to say I contributed something to that. We've needed a game like this since AGs were in their infancy. As I've said, Danger City could have been the first, but this should definitely give the AG community something to smile about. I'm mostly fine with the SFX myself, although if they can be upgraded that's certainly no bad thing. I wouldn't mind more combat usables than side arms, though. I think that's my biggest suggestion. I liked being able to use a lead pipe in DC, and perhaps the ability to pick up and throw things like pieces of wood, boxes/crates, or even rocks wouldn't be amiss with me. Not required, mind you, but just a thought.

Re: Help with Backing Up Manamon and Manamon 2 Save Files

Hi. Yes, absolutely you can backup your save files and even transfer them between machines. go to C:\users/your username on your computer/ap data/roming/vgstorm. if you can't see the folder, make sure your file explorer is set to display hidden files and folders. In that Vgstorm directory, You will find a folder with subfolders for all the Vgstorm titles including Manamon and Manamon 2. In those subfolders are files called data.dat and settings.dat. Settings are your in game preferences, data is your saved files, though to make life easier you can just copy the folders directly. I did this myself when my lady was in radio therapy and I kept having to transfer saved games between my desktop and laptop, and of course I have my Manamon 1 save with a full manapedia safely backed up on an external harddrive.hth.

Well, the original mortal kombat that came out in 1992 had only 4 developers, plus the few actors and actress to play the characters, so yeah, just a little bit more than blind devs can probably muster up right now..

Re: Scarlet Shells, concept demo 1!

The gun sounds are quite good. But the melee sound effects, presumably because this is still only a concept demo, could be better. Punches use the same two or three sounds, and they sound very plasticky. And I definitely would not say they're the best I've ever heard in an audio game. But again, this is a concept demo, and I'm hoping some of the kickstarter money will be investment in higher quality sounds.

Can't find the iTunes app on my Samsung TV

Hi guys.So a couple of weeks ago, my Mom purchased a Samsung smart TV. Today, we wanted to watch a movie, and Amazon Prime wasn't letting us turn on Audio Description. I did some digging, and I found that iTunes is available on Samsung TV's without needing an Apple TV.However, when looking on the TV's home screen and searching for iTunes, nothing comes up. Can we access iTunes movies through the Apple TV + app? Also, is it possible to get them audio described? We don't have the audio description option that comes built into the TV because our Xfinity box won't allow it.Thanks

Re: frustrated with blindness (read post if you want context)

I'm not questioning why money goes there.  It's not even about pride.  It's about the fact that if you go to a bunch of sighted donors and say "I want to buy blind people puppies and they'll become more independent" everyone is too busy going "yay! Puppies! I would love to donate!  Let me just open up my purse, and look, here's $5 in pocket change" in that upper class rich person accent. One of the key things to understand is that most of the money doesn't come from us, and we aren't consulted on where it goes.  The people donating to guide dogs aren't asking us if we want a dog because it gives us a sense of independence.  It makes them feel good to buy us a puppy.  It makes them feel less good to go fund NVDA or get a city to put in some accessible crosswalks.  So we get the puppy.

You actually can get that chest in the forest. there's a screen northwest of the village with a south exit. This leads to a screen with a section you need to dash across, following the path from there leads you to the chest.I'm pretty sure that to unlock the extra dungeon you need to complete the temple dungeon. Aria gives you the courage goblet thing, which the quest giver activates when you talk to them. This allows you to get into the extra dungeon.

Mostly agreed with the above. Don't go below an SSD, i5 or amd R5  and 8gb ram. Get an external GPU, even if it is a lower or midrange one. Seriously consider AMD systems, iether the forth gen ones now, or the mobile ones that should be out soon. Seriously right now the new AMDs basicly beat intel at every metric, and have a much smaller transister size, which allows them to generate less heat, aand they are cheaper for same level of performance.

Re: Why are there no audiogames in the fighting games genre?

So, if there were to be an audiogame with fighting game mechanics, it would probably require a whole development team, instead of just one or two people.  ANd at least one of them has to be either familiar with martial arts, or be willing to A. do the research and B. Try to represent all of the combat in audio. So the chances of getting a more involved combat system seem pretty low just now. I'll admit, I get jealous when I hear about all the neat combos and things that can be done in fighting games vs. the key mashing that generally is combat in audiogames. One could, in theory, put in audio cues for different areas of the body that could be hit by an attack, and assign different keys to those areas; something of the sort was tried in Entombed. So, are there any audiogames with more involved combat systems out there? Just curious. I hope this topic doesn't die too soon; it's nice to see what everyone has to say on combat.

Re: could I link folders?

yes, that probably does.  Because it's limited and targeted in scope.  If you go specifically find data files in a folder and you are 100% sure that they are just data files and you know what they're all for, that they're managed by you or a very specific program or whatever, okay, fine.  Simlinks aren't dangerous in themselves.  But what is being discussed here is "I want to be lazy, can I just simlink my user directories" or whatever.the safe way is at least as much work as just learning to install programs to non-default locations, since you still have to do it one by one.Basically in Windows, "how do I get my user directories/program files to be on a different drive" just ends in sadness.  I think there are a few procedures for it, but not ones that let you only do it for some programs, and if I recall they all have caveats of one sort or another.

Re: looking around for an other mud

Meatbag, no enforced RP though sometimes you have to do things like"ask train" or say keywords in the text of NPC stuff to interract with them. or "ask quest" and so on. It can be a little tough at first but you'll get used to it. Also, although you are going for fantasy, which is my cup of tea as well, the realistic areas like Roman Britain, Medieval Germany, and gold rush Austrailia are not to be missed either. The game has a small community and it updates relatively often, though new area additions and such are quite rare. I think the last one was the addition of Freiburg to the medieval period in July, thhough they often add area additions which are basically quest or room add-ons to places that already exist, such as they had a barge area added to an egyptian area earlier this year. last thing I remembered they added was some leathercrafting, smithing, and mining, though you can also pan for gold in the proper places such as in the two gold rush areas.I don't play the game much, but that is simply because I keep the games I play to a low number and don't play even them all that often, not because this game isn't good. The magic system is a bit weird. You have to learn things like "chant" from the proper NPCs and then by doing certain things, they will give you "words" which are usually latin or sandscript words. You then must experiment with combinations of these words to figure out how your spells work. Once you discover a spell, you'll know it from then on without having to remember it, but for example, you don't just get "fireball" you have to learn the combination of words that cause a fireball to happen, after that, you have fireball. also, you don't just pick up skills on your way, you get them by having high enough stats and spending skill points which you get while you level. However, that isn't all, usually skills must be gotten from specific people. For example, you can learn to swim from a sailor, but you probably couldn't learn to use gunns from an ancient aztec priest. Lots of NPCs teach skills, but most only teach one or two. You often also might have to spend money, do favors, or the like or perhaps people who are claiming to teach a skill are lying. The search for skills and gear to enable your stats to get high enough to use the better skills is a joy of the game (the game is classless) The gear is necessary as your stats do not increase on their own. occassionally quests or items can give you skills for free though, so keep your eyes peeled and try to do the quests when you can, though the game is designed that not all quests are doable by all characters since some  require specialized skills and the like. Remorting is the way to get an insane number of skills if you gradually do quests on each life and so-forth.

8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, an I5 8th gen processor or better and a full sized keyboard without cramped arrow keys, easily replaceable or out of the box solid audio drivers, and a decent battery with a weight under 5.5 pounds and under 16 inches wide are things  I would prioritize. There may be some new years sales that he could take advantage of for a machine that will last longer, the ability to get some accident protection, or if he just wants to spend less for a configuration like the one mentioned above. The Acer Swift and Aspire, Dell Inspiron and XPS, Lenovo ThinkPad E and T, HP Envy X360, and Asus Zenbook model lines in my opinion are all good bets for the money. However, it's vitally important to check individual models for reviews as they sometimes very widely even within the same series.  Never trust a product based only on the brand name or series, and make sure to collect information from trusted sites like Notebook Check, Thom's Hardware, anandtech, and the laptop review forums.Compare these with user reviews (ideally in depth ones made within the last half year and between 2 and 4 stars) on reseller sites like amazon, newegg, bestbuy, walmart, and costco.I can give some specific suggestions too if you'd like, and there is a guy who sells slightly used laptops to blind people for pretty nice prices, just email him at the address below and ask what he's got in stock.n...@juno.com

Re: frustrated with blindness (read post if you want context)

@31Actually, your info is off on guide dogs.  They don't cost $4 because it costs that much to train a dog, it costs that much because the rate of attrition is that high.  10 years or so ago, all the guide dog schools switched off German Shepherds to Labs, because Labs only fail out at about 50% and this was considered a major achievement.  I was told by people at Guide Dogs for the Blind who probably knew what they were talking about that what makes this even worse is that they usually fail near the end, where you have to get the dog to understand things like when it's okay and not okay to disobey and also you're introducing all the guiding stuff that requires more intellect than what we ask of from most dogs.  Apparently the common failure mode here is you end up with a dog that doesn't listen to sit anymore, or just runs you straight off the sidewalk and into the lake or whatever. If we could just flat out train one dog then sure, it'd be less.  It's also a terrible allocation of resources to give blind people guide dogs when, as I said, we could just literally retire blind people at the age of 20 with the same amount of money.  But as far as I know the people actually doing the training, etc, aren't inflating prices.  Say it's $2 each, over a period of 18 months to 2 years, and that's not really even enough to pay the trainer minimum wage.

Re: Why are there no audiogames in the fighting games genre?

Not that we can't program it in the same way. It's totally possible. IT simply can't happen without a reference, and most blind people just don't have one. This is also why combat physics and mechanics in general are really weird. Just as an example... in action games, if you hit a player with a string of attacks, they can't attack you at the same time. Part of this is visual frames, but part of this is just simple combat logic. Get hit hard enough and you won't be able to react for a split second or two which gies a person the cance to pile n and attack more. In audio games, even when hit, enemies or even the player will be able to just hit back like nothing is happening which turns the game into a contest of who has more health and who can take more hits before they finally go down. That's just one example. I could think of more.7 also had a great point about games like Tekken motion capturing from real martial artists! Part of that is to get the illustrations of the moves, and part of it is ecause there can be a discussion about attack physics and what certain moves the body makes will do. Also helps that Harada-san is a martial arts fan, and you can see the results of his knowledge in the way the game design is, and the fact that it's got a top spot in the fighting game world. It's one of the most complex and technical if not the most because of how well implemented its combat physics are done.

Re: frustrated with blindness (read post if you want context)

Fun fact: it may cost forty thousand dollars to train a guide dog, but that's only because someone decided that it did. The food itself doesn't cost forty grand to produce. The vaccinations and shots and stuff don't cost forty grand to produce. Even if you charged cost for all the absolutely essential items (not services, but items), we're not anywhere close to forty thousand bucks. So it comes down to training. And sure, there's a lot of it. But it isn't guide dogs that are expensive. It's capitalism that's expensive. If I had the ability to train a guide dog, the time to do it, and the freedom to use that time not pursuing a living of my own, and chose to train and certify guide dogs, I could do it for no actual cost. There is a labour cost, certainly, but that should be up to the labourer to determine. So in our real-life scenario, labourers are deciding that same training that cost eighteen thousand dollars two decades ago now costs almost three times that, largely because prices are going up on just about everything, and they have to eat to live.I'm not disagreeing with you about the money being put into cures being entirely too small. I agree completely; we need to do much, much better here. I'm only saying that the money put into accessibility, like guide dogs for instance, is kind of arbitrary, and is more a reflection on capitalism and the need for profit than it is on the actual value of whatever it is that's being bought and paid for.

In an audiogame, we aren't exactly concerned with whether we hit someone with our feet or fist, or whether they take the hit in the face, chest or back of the neck. I'm willing to vet that a good majority of game deve here have little or no martial arts experience. I mention this because in a lot of fighting games, such as tekken and mortal komvat, the devs had to do motion capture on people with experience to get the models and moves accurately portrayed. So yeah, 6 is right.

Side scrollers are the same way, but we've managed to get by. Fighting games simply require slightly more involved physics... and let's face it. I know some people won't like me saying this, but it's hard, as someone wo is blind, to imagine what cool combat actually is... unless you've had people describe martial arts movies to you growing up, or unles you actually are practicing a martial art on more than ust a surface level. That's why the idea of cool combat amongst this communities is all about explosions or crazy amounts of enemies on screen who all attack you as fast as possible. Complex combat like angles, player and enemy distance having an impact on attacks, combos, etc, don't make it in because most of us have never seen enough attacks or martial arts moves to string them together, even if we understand them in theory.

Re: Why are there no audiogames in the fighting games genre?

Its more than just putting the right sounds in the right place. Fighting games have to keep track of things like when someone is airvorb, lying down, the position of limbs and projectiles, in what way people are blocking and facing, whether they are standing or crouching when they hit or kick or block or move, how fast and far off the ground people jump or get launched from a hit depending on their size and the attack strength of their foe, what position they land in, how hard they bounce off of walls if any and on and on and on. This kinda stuff is probably easier to figure out if you have some kinda graphics to use as a reference. This is why games of other genres are easier to do I think.

Why are there no audiogames in the fighting games genre?

So, I've been thinking about this for quite some time. Fighting games have historically been the easiest genre of videogames for visually impaired people  to get into. So why is it that there are no audiogames in the genre? We have shooters, side-scrollers, a few rpgs of both the turn-based and real-time variety. ANd let's not forget the shooters ... no, mustn't forget those. Oh, sorry, I did mention those. So my question is, why have developers stayed away from fighting games or at least employed their mechanics? It just seems like a strange thing to ignore a genre that has been so easy for blind people to get into.

You have to wait for the moment an axe swing in tanglewood deals 120 damage to your chest and you'll know what hell is like. That how it is for me right now when I go to train. I'm too high to train my top skills in easy areas.it's always good to retrieve, bandage, hide and wait, y'kno. and bandages actually don't cost a lot...besides, you can always hide, wait and ambush. you don't have to jump at them and try to hide in combat. there are certain hide-difficult rooms in the village...and once you get to have those with tridents to the north stab you for 70 damage with their random cobalt (because cobalt is badass against most but nethrim), good luck.:)

Re: Explanation: why Chinese games are flagged as virues

I'm pretty sure that claiming that the Chinese government is a less than ethical body doesn't count as xenophobia; if it does then those brave souls in China who attempted to rebel against the system would definitely qualify. While I can't say that Chinese people as a whole hold such and such an attitude, I can say that the ones I have met seem to be quite nice people, so xenophobia towards Chinese people as a whole is definitely not called for. As for fearing what the Chinese government  might do with data they collect, that seems like a reasonable fear; after all, red flags of paranoia go up if the freedom-loving American companies like Apple and Google do the same. That being said? I'm not going to stress out about what happens to whatever data they manage to acquire because in the end, the world runs on consumer data now.
