I have to agree. As much as I'd love to see SL2, Liam has made his position clear and we ought to respect that. He was, after all, about nineteen or twenty when he coded the game and, as has already been stated, had a lot more energy and drive for that sort of thing back then.

Although I would love to see a Chillingham 2, I would hope it wouldn't be padded with filler material like the bug catching, which to me was just a way of artificially extending playtime. I would also enjoy more games in the Children of Dragons series, although I really, really wish Aaron wasn't so closed off to the idea of modifying the way Dragon Strike scrolls worked to be a little less hard on some people. I mean I do appreciate that he added the option of listening to and practicing them outside of battle as well as the option of changing which key they used, but some of them were quite frankly ridiculously difficult. I mean I appreciate a reasonable challenge but some of those scrolls were borderline unfair in my opinion.

That's pretty much exactly it. I was thinking more of the Lunar games for PlayStation, since those were the first games I encountered that featured a battle system like that. It definitely added more of a strategic element since you could learn what attacks your enemies were using based on their stances and decide what countermeasures to take based on that.

Re: Sable - A code free tool for creating RPG's (New 1.4 change log added)

That does make sense Paul. Even money freely given to a project can put unnecessary pressure on a developer. But I like the idea of being able to buy the soundtrack separately someday. The tracks I've heard on your Youtube are pretty damn catchy. One thing I'd love to see added to Sable, although it might be better suited to a later version, would be the ability to have enemies telegraph their attacks by their stance. This is something that was featured quite extensively in the Lunar games for PlayStation. You could tell what an enemy was going to do in the next round by their stance at the end of the current one. So if an enemy was acting more aggressively you could be sure they were going to use a more powerful attack on you. Obviously the game would still select randomly from the enemy's list of possible attacks, but each would be tied to a particular stance. So you might have a battle with a Mage type character and the game might have him raise his staff toward the sky and energy gathering at its tip. That would mean he was going to use a more powerful attack, so you could decide in advance how you might handle it.

I definitely look forward to seeing what else you guys come up with in addition to Crimson Eclipse. RPG's have been my favorite since I received the first Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy games for the old Nintendo as presents for my eleventh and twelfth birthdays respectively. That lead me to later Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy and Lufia games and countless others, so it's good that we'll be getting a tool to create more. I for one don't feel people should stop developing games for a particular genre simply because we have a few games representing it. After all if the mainstream gaming industry had done that it probably wouldn't still be as big as it is. That being said I do feel more developers should undertake more in-depth exploration of what the various genres have to offer. I say this with side-scrollers particularly in mind but this could apply to any genre, RPG's included.

The dual currency thing really isn't that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. After all even the Twin Falls city and the few other Idaho cities Luke and company will explore are part of a fictionalized version of Earth where a few people are aware of and practice magic, so it's not entirely out of place that they might use gold as the currency. Heck, even some of the shops will sell medieval style weapons like axes, bows and swords and things.

Honestly though, it sounds like the only feature I might want to include in my game that would be hard to implement with Sable would be the idea of two different currencies in the same game. Since the first part takes place on Earth and in America, they'd use the American dollar, but then when the party crosses to Arcadia, the real fantasy world, the currency would be the traditional gold or, if I were to take the tack that the Lunar games did, silver.

The first release will be in BGT, then if it's successful they plan to rewrite it in its own programming language. But yeah, I've grown up with RPG's despite never having sight myself. I did, however, use to watch my brother and various friends play games like Final Fantasy even as I played around with them myself. Then I've also been fortunate enough to have a few sighted girlfriends over the years who enjoyed gaming and so sometimes we'd play together. But yeah, while I'm not nearly as prepared as the Crimson Eclipse team, I'm still trying to at least brainstorm and write down ideas that I might want to incorporate into Ravenscroft as well as how feasible they may be.

Getting back on track, I've been thinking lately that it might not be such a bad idea to try creating a small, simple RPG once Sable comes out, to sort of cut my teeth in so to speak, before I try tackling my first major project. I was thinking something along the lines of the first Dragon Warrior which had just one playable character to keep track of, or Final Fantasy Mystic Quest which featured one main character plus a few guest characters who'd swap in and out at various points in the story. That would hopefully give me a chance to really get the hang of how Sable and its new features work while still creating something at least somewhat meaningful.

Re: Sable - A code free tool for creating RPG's (New 1.4 change log added)

Paul, a but thou must situation is, as threeblacknoises pointed out, a situation where an NPC asks a question to which there's only one correct answer, and choosing the other choice would result in an infinite loop where the character would ask the question again and again until the player chose the correct answer. Usually these were yes/no questions where yes was the correct answer. The reason some mainstream gamers refer to this as a but thou must situation is because of the original dragon warrior game on the old Nintendo, which was released as Dragon Quest in Japan and I believe Europe and the UK as well. Anyway, one of the tasks the player was asked by the king to complete was to rescue his daughter from a dragon. Well when you finally found her she would ask you to take her home. If you said no she would respond with "but thou must!" and then ask you again and again until you agreed. The same thing would happen later if you talked to her after she was safe at home. She would ask you if you loved her and if you said no she would say "but thou must!" and continue to ask until you said yes. The funny thing is, the first Manamon game from VGStorm actually features a but thou must situation during a post-battle conversation with I believe the fourth stadium leader. Like I said, this is just a curiosity thing more than anything, although I have thought of including a few instances of it in my game for comic relief as a nod to Dragon Warrior. I don't know if the current games in the series still use the trope but I know that at least up until part three they still did.

That makes sense. It's interesting you should mention that because in the Final Fantasy VI scenario I mentioned, Interceptor was actually considered a hidden status effect, although the game obviously never came out and said that. The way you might find out is if Shadow were to be hit with an ability that swapped his status with an enemy that had the ability to do that. I think the spell was called Rippler if I remember right. But if Shadow were to be hit with that spell, then the monster who cast the spell would have Interceptor as a possible counter when they were attacked. The thing that could make my own scenario a bit more complicated is that Misty would be a character the player can't actually control, so she would probably have to be coded to protect Luke from the start.

That touches on a mechanic I've been trying to figure out if it would be possible to add. My main character has a pet cat who turns out to be a faerie creature, a Werecat, whom I was thinking would act in battle at least as long as Luke was in the battle party. She would be something like Interceptor, Shadow's dog from Final Fantasy VI, who will occasionally block a physical attack directed at Shadow and then counter with an attack of his own. Misty, Luke's cat, would theoretically act in a similar fashion. I'm curious if that's something that could potentially be done in Sable.

Good point Paul, there are some situations in my game where I might possibly want the story to affect the amount of random encounters. In the first town of the game, which is actually a partially fictionalized version of the city where I live, one of the initial quests the player will be able to undertake is to clear a warehouse of an infestation of rats as a favor for the owner if the local inn and tavern. The way I'd thought of having this quest work is that you could encounter random groups of rats inside the building, but once you found and dealt with their central nest, that would eliminate the random encounters because it would effectively clear out all the rats.

Re: Sable - A code free tool for creating RPG's (New 1.4 change log added)

Actually though, the way the item/spell for negating random encounters would work, assuming it could be implemented, would be something like it used to work in the older Dragon Warrior games, I can't speak to the newer ones because I've never played them. But the way the Repel spell or Fairy Water worked was that it would ward off only weak monsters and the effect would be temporary, say for a certain number of steps or maybe a certain amount of time. It also wouldn't work inside dungeons but only out on the overworld map, so you wouldn't be able to just completely avoid random battles altogether, just the weaker ones. The idea basically would be that if you had a place you'd been to before and wanted to get back there as quickly as possible, you could use that item or spell to ward off any weak enemies on the way there. There could be a level threshold beyond which it wouldn't be effective, say enemies level 5 or below would be warded off but anything above that would still be able to attack you. I'm not sure if that was exactly how it worked in Dragon Warrior, whether it was based on the monster's stats or a straight level check. Either way it wasn't a complete protection against random encounters. But if you had a specific place you wanted to go grind at because the enemies there were stronger and gave better EXP and gold rewards but you had to pass through terrain occupied by weaker enemies to get there, you could protect against those less rewarding encounters until you got to where you were really going.

I'm also curious if it would be possible to create status ailments that would continue to affect the character even outside of battle. In some mainstream RPG's, a character who was poisoned would sustain damage with every step they took, and while I wouldn't necessarily make it that extreme in my case I would certainly set it up so that a poisoned character might take poison damage every few seconds as they were walking around. I don't know if they still do it but I do recall some of the older Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior games used that mechanic. In the original Final Fantasy I think you would only take damage until your HP dropped to one, but in some other games you might literally die from walking around on the map unless you happened to have a spell or an item to cure it.

Re: Sable - A code free tool for creating RPG's (New 1.4 change log added)

True enough. That's what I've been trying to do. In fact I just went looking for some royalty free fantasy type music just to listen to it and see if a particular style caught my fancy. Well that and I just like fantasy style music LOL. I don't want to use stock music if I can help it unless I find something that's really good, but the more I can listen to the more ideas I may have for the type of compositions I would want to use in my game. Of course then there comes the matter of saving up to potentially hire an actual composer.

This has reignited my interest in working out the outline for my game, not that I've really lost it really, although I have had other things that occupied me more lately. It may not be the best way to go about things but I've sort of been dividing my time between the game outline itself and working on at least a basic version of the script. Obviously the more of that I can get done between now and whenever we see the full release the better things will be when the time actually comes. I can worry about music, sound effects and voice acting later.

Re: Sable - A code free tool for creating RPG's (New 1.4 change log added)

Exactly. In the old Nintendo Entertainment System game Deadly Towers, widely regarded as one of the worst games every made for that system, the music tracks would restart every! time you entered a new room, which meant that quite often you'd only hear the first few seconds of a given track. The sad thing is that the music in that game was actually pretty good, but you'd end up hating it by the end simply because each track would restart from the beginning anytime you entered an area where it played, even if it was a connected series of rooms where the same track was featured. I also like the hand armor damage thing since it brings to mind the Monks in the Final Fantasy series, who tended to attack with either bare fists and feet or claw weapons. One of the characters in my game is basically a Monk who would do battle that way and I've been doing a lot of thinking on how I'd want her to operate. A lot of the characters in my game are your prototypical RPG job classes, Warrior, Cleric, Mage, Ranger, Monk and so-forth, but I have one character who has magical skill but can also fight quite well in melee combat, at least that's the way I envision her. On a side note I'd also need to find a very specific type of voice for her since she's a very surly type. Her nickname is Grizzly LOL. But I describe her as sounding like Ursula from The Little Mermaid, if Ursula had spent her entire life smoking strong cigars and drinking strong whisky. For any David Eddings fans, she's basically a female version of his character Beldin. But I'd been thinking that like Fergus the Leprechaun I might have to relegate Grizelda to NPC status, but with the new changes I might not have to do that.

Re: Sable - A code free tool for creating RPG's (New 1.4 change log added)

Nor can I. Seriously, if even the proof of concept could be that impressive I can only imagine what the final product will be able to do if one is creative. It's as I and others have said before. The alpha may have been a bit cludgy in some areas but what it could do it did extremely well. And with these new party additions it makes it possible for me to make a few of the NPC's in my project into full party members, the fully party size being eight or nine, though only four would be participating in battle at any given time. But it means me Leprechaun character could actually fight enemies or steal from them. LOL. I also like the changes made to music, where the track wouldn't fade out if you entered a building if the music wasn't actually set to change for that area. It always did seem a bit odd to me, having the town theme fade out and restart when I entered the tavern, since the music didn't actually change.

Re: Sable - A code free tool for creating RPG's (New beta features video)

I agree. That way each developer could decide which one they think would be most appropriate for their game. Another idea I had would be what mainstream games refer to as party talk. You already see a little of that in A Hero's Call, where you have the ability to converse with whoever happens to be in your active party. Those conversations can reveal background on the characters and in some cases benefit them by raising certain stats of theirs by a point or two. That may be a feature for a Sable update after the initial release but it's something that I see as being important to the story of at least one of my characters.

Re: Sable - A code free tool for creating RPG's (New beta features video)

True. It's not uncommon for a character to just leave at some point simply because their work is done, then perhaps rejoin later, again for a brief period. Final Fantasy is known for this. But I like the idea of what you suggested Paul. Aside from Fergus the Leprechaun, "Fergus Ferguson at yer service," there are a few other party members who aren't strictly speaking main characters but who might fight in battle. My main character, Luke, for example, has a feline companion who's sort of a combination of a pet and a familiar. Of course the way she would work in my example might be beyond the scope of what Sable can do, at least in its current form. But Misty wouldn't actually be a controllable character the way Luke or Samantha would, but would instead be sort of like Interceptor in Final Fantasy VI, where as long as Luke was in your party there would be the chance that Misty the Werecat might block and then counter any attack directed at Luke.

Re: Sable - A code free tool for creating RPG's (New beta features video)

Yeah, from what I read of the change logs the other day the progress is quite impressive. I'd like to see a way for you to have more characters in your party, not necessarily in your active party, that could still be limited to four, but as backup. My game features four main characters but there are a few secondary characters I'd like for the player to be able to swap in and out of the active party. Some mainstream games have a vehicle the party can travel in, which is where the backup characters would hang out. Either that or it could be like A Hero's Call where they hang out at an inn in a particular town and so you'd go there to swap them out. But one of the characters I have is a Leprechaun whose primary ability is the ability to steal things from enemies during battle. He can also pick locks, so there are certain situations where you'll need him.

Re: Creating a code free RPG using Sable(video 14), by Ebon Sky Studios

Yeah, I know about assigning invisible keys to bosses. The quest for recruiting Samantha, the female lead, was one such. In that case the invisible key was that you rescued her daughter after she'd wandered off into some woods northwest of town and wound up in a den of wolves. Surviving that battle netted you the invisible key for rescuing her daughter, which would then allow her to join you. And I agree, invisible keys and locked dialogue seemed like the best way to go about setting things up. So Samantha might have some generic lines related to the fact that Luke was leaving on a journey, then once you recruited Nerik the Dwarf, that would be the key to trigger her asking you for help. The same thing would be true for the County Commissioner. She might have some generic dialogue, then once you had both Samantha and Nerik in your party she'd ask you to clear out the cave, which in turn would yield the key for killing the boss. I also like the fact that we can now create custom classes, since while Luke would be your typical Mage, my idea for Samantha is that she'd be something of a Sage, one who could ultimately use both Mage and Cleric magic.

Ok, now I'm even more excited LOL. This gives me some ideas for my own game. One of the major quests in the early part of my Ravenscroft game involves clearing out a cave east of the starting city of Twin Falls of some unwelcome denizens, in exchange for which the county commissioner will grant you permission to use the city's north gate. But I was wondering if there'd be a way to set it up so that she won't actually assign you the quest until you've recruited the two companions waiting for you in the city. I'm also curious if you can set it up so that you can't even recruit one of the companions until you've recruited the other, maybe via an invisible key.

I almost didn't download the alpha. After Audio Game Maker I've been extremely skeptical of menu-based creation utilities. Unfortunately my brain isn't mathematical enough for coding in BGT so that wasn't really an option either. But even with as cludgy as the Sable alpha could be in some areas I was far, far more impressed than I thought I would be. There were things it couldn't do and there will doubtless still be things it can't do very easily when the initial release comes out, but the alpha we got was far more stable overall than my past experiences with alpha projects led me to expect. In short what it could do it did very well overall. I was actually able to create a workable demo of Ravenscroft, although lack of good recording software and a good microphone prevented me from taking part in the contest.

Obviously I'll have to wait till Sable is released to start trying to implement the ideas for Ravenscroft. Then of course I'll have to find a decent music composer since obviously I'll want original music or as close to it as possible, especially given that the female lead has a rather tragic past and so I'll want her character theme to reflect that. Funnily enough, one of the tracks you bundled with the Sable Alpha actually worked for that for me. It was the piano track, I forget the name of it, but I know it was featured in a Final Fantasy game.

Re: Creating a code free RPG using Sable(video 14), by Ebon Sky Studios

I've said it before but I'll say it again. I'm looking forward to both Crimson Eclipse and Sable. I'm especially looking forward to converting my Ravenscroft fantasy novel into an RPG. Heck, I've already got a sort of manual written, albeit an extremely rudimentary one. Obviously I won't be able to flesh it out until the engine is released and I have more of an idea of what it's going to be capable of. I do hope we'll be able to implement a scenario like I described earlier, where you have a boss battle that you're supposed to lose for purposes of storyline but which the game could allow you to win with proper preparation. The Lufia series in the mainstream RPG market is particularly famous for that.

Re: A WESTERN DRAMA WILL BE RELEASE 9th OCTOBER 2020

I watched Liam's stream and, while the gameplay mechanics did leave something to be desired (I'm not clear why you had to match rattlesnake noises during duels before you could shoot), it's clear they put a lot of work into the game and did a pretty damn good job with what they had to work with, especially with having to contend with the inevitable disruptions caused by Covfefe I mean Covid19. I probably won't be buying it right away simply because there are a few other things I want to take care of first, but it is on my list to try. For a first title it was a lot better than I was expecting.

Not being able to revive fallen allies isn't a bug. That's how it was meant to work. Nor is dying with a lot of HP. If your head gets mangled or cut off it doesn't matter how much HP you have. Is it annoying? Yes, but that's how it works. I do agree about the unidentified stuff, but as has already been pointed out the game is abandonware.

I actually don't know if that camp inside the ruins counts toward the total in Laying Down the Law since the fires are usually extinguished after the bandits are cleared out. That doesn't happen with that one camp site. As for A House Divided, if memory serves, it's been a while since I played the game, one of the letters is found in one of the tents in one of the four encampments where you found the keys earlier. I think it's random as to which one it's in.

I agree that the combat could perhaps have been done better, but overall the game does seem cool. I haven't played the demo yet, in fact I just downloaded it, but I watched Liam play it on his Labor Day stream. I can see why people don't like the describe it for me thing, perhaps she could have said something a bit less obvious. Maybe while passing a strea she could have said something like what river is that? at which point her companion could have given her a description of the immediate area. It is what it is though and I do have to say I like the voice acting. I had to laugh a little at how delighted Alex seemed while chasing and killing rats.

Well, seeing as Lord of the Rings has been one of my favorite fantasies since I was ten and one of my teachers at the time introduced me to an admittedly horribly awkward American dramatization of both it and the Hobbit, I have a feeling Mr. Tolkien himself would have risen from his grave and come to kick my arse if I hadn't gotten your reference. I was just thinking about sound design for my game and it just occurred to me that, for the first game at least, I'm going to need two different styles of music since the game starts on modern day Earth, in the town where I live incidentally, and then transitions to a more fantasy type setting, though admittedly not without some modern-day conveniences. Makes me wish that game design program at ITT Technical Institute could have been modified for us blind folks. LOL.

Guess I better get serious about writing down my game outline and maybe seeing about reasonably affordable music and sound libraries since I'm obviously going to want good quality ones for Ravenscroft. Heck, this might even be a multi-game project since I'm working on converting what was originally an idea for a series of fantasy novels, possibly a trilogy, into audio game form.

I wouldn't think the purchase would be limited to just the BGT version. I would think once we purchase it we've purchased it for good. I seem to recall Paul saying the plan was to ultimately work it so that you wouldn't need Sable to play games made with it. After all, you don't necessarily need BGT to play games made with BGT since you can compile it into its own executable.

This tool is really adwanced and Ebon Sky spend really big time to create itObviously you're not patient if you're even just asking for a release year. Again, Paul would probably have said something about that if he knew.
