Re: Playing diablo 3 blind.

True, but at least the walk animation stops when you hit an obstacle unlike some other games: *cough* Final Fantasy VII Remake *cough*. Seriously, that's just lazy programming. There's no reason a character's walk animation should continue when the character can't move forward. From a blind gamer's perspective, that's a near game ending barrier. But even from a sighted gamer's perspective it's dumb.

Re: Playing diablo 3 blind.

It would be nice if OCR could tell if things were in different columns or something, or more faithfully represent the relative position of characters on screen. It looks like a lot of these numbers are supposed to be beside each other like Strength, Dexterity, Vitality and their stats. I'm pretty sure the game is not listing the stats like:Strength45DexterityIntelligenceVitality567341Or whatever the case is.Maybe some day. It's weird to see some information look like a nice block then it gets interrupted by some completely different information for a bit, then something else interrupts that, and then you might get another part of the original block. Pretty soon you can't tell what number is supposed to belong to what stat.

Yeah, but I found the cellar that I'm currently at before I had her in my party. That's why I don't think it's the right one. I managed to accidently leave the ruins I think. It's an unnamed cellar if that helps. It seems to only have one small room in it with one flor. There were some trash mobs in it. When I first entered it, my character made some comment about how all the treasure had been cleared out.Is there a way to port back to the town without being near the waypoint? I could kind of get my bearings again if I could do that.

Re: Playing diablo 3 blind.

For those who need it, this is how you create or delete characters. If you already in a game quit by hitting start and going to the bottom of the menu. You know this screen is active when you hear a magical looping chime and a fire. You're in the character detail screen.Press triangle to switch heroIn the next menu, press triangle to create a new hero or square to delete oneNow you're on the class selectionThe left side is the male version and the right side is the female versionBarbarianCrusaderDemon HunterMonkNecromancerWitch DoctorWizardPressing L1 or R1 will toggle the game mode. The selections do not wrap: normal is the first and seasonal hardcore is the last selection.Normal:  Create a hero and play the traditional experience.Hardcore: Warning: Once you die, you will no longer be able to play this hero.Seasonal:  Reap exclusive rewards while the season lasts!Seasonal Hardcore: Reap exclusive rewards this season. Once you die, you will no longer be able to play this hero. The next screen is confirmationX to accept or circle to declineThe next screen is your character's name.I plugged a normal USB keyboard in and I could type the name that way. There is a randomly generated name already typed out. So if you just want to continue, use the controller to go all the way down and all the way to the right and hit x to accept. Not sure what this next screen is, but hit x to continue. It's basically the same character screen you went to when you exited the game. It just displays the character you just made. You can hit triangle again and go back to the character selection menu to create, select, or delete a character. The next screen is where you select the difficulty mode. From left to right:NormalHardExpertMasterTormentPress x to select and that's the last screen before the game begins.

@66 You mean like if you had 2 or more zones of the screen you wanted to monitor? There is not currently a way to do that, but it would be possible to write that into the addon. You'd have to have some way to switch through the zones on the setting screen which means another combobox and you'd have to add a list to store each zone parameters then have the addon carve the image into slices and send them to the OCR one at a time. Not sure I'd want the headache though.

@59 No problem. That's actually pretty good help. That with already knowing I can look through the last 10 picked up items with the d-pad should make the inventory thing doable. As for skills, it seems to automatically assign them to buttons when you get them. At least until the action buttons are filled up.Am I right that x on the PS4 is the weapon attack button? I chose the wizard and he starts with a wand of Magic Missile or something along with a ranged spell so it's kind of hard to tell which one is which, but it only makes sense that the x face button would be the normal attack.

Is it some kind of cursor menu, like with a virtual mouse, using the analog stick, or is it just really touchy. Because it feels like it's really easy to jump over items in those menus. Unfortunately it's an uphill battle that we will always be facing to get blind accessible games. There are too many bad audio games on the internet and they end up making people gun shy about backing any new project. @117 That's interesting. I wonder why it would do that. I've personally never had it jump around or lose focus on the PC app. I have had it do that on the IOS app, which I almost never use any more. That use to be a huge problem on IOS where if you accidentally scrolled down too far, you'd find yourself jumping back to the middle of the conversation. It was extremely frustrating.Like I said before, I just treat it like a web page. I use headings, the comma key to jump past blocks, ctrl+home to get to the top. The only place I have any sort of complaint is how selecting a server works. But, if you learn ctrl+k and what hash and bang do, and know the name of the server or channel you're trying to get to, it's not that bad.

I had a feeling I was missing something. To that end, VBA-RR does have debug menus that can help with figuring out what's going on in memory. Unfortunately many of the would\be helpful diagnostics crash the program on my computer, so I can only ever access basic information. For instance, I can see that VRAM (for Pokemon) starts at 0x8000, but any attempt to figure out anything beyond that crashes the program. It's unfortunate really. Having Lua as an embedded resource in the emulator is fantastic for accessible potential, but having any useful information just out of reach is so frustrating.

Re: how aksessible are the final fantasy games for blind

@17 As far as I can tell, all Pokemon Access does is use Lua scripts to continuously monitor changes in the VRAM and look for specific markers. I am playing it with no modded ROMs, just the original rips.At any rate, I see no reason why the same principles couldn't be used on any other GB game. Obviously things would have to be adapted or different games since every game uses different hex data representations. And the accessibility of any game would depend on what sort of interaction and precision is required. I doubt you could make a space shooter accessible, but most RPGs are just text and turn based battles, with the occasional mini game. But there are things that I don't know how to do myself. Like search the VRAM for the data to monitor. That'll be different for every game. And it would be too much trial and error for me.

Don't just load something up, say "I'm not an immediate savant at it," then declare it terrible. There are some issues with it for sure, but the developers are not ignoring our community. I've been using it for a year or so for Dungeons & Dragons and I've gotten use to its interface and I don't even use the hot keys. I just use normal website navigation.

Re: Discussion about movement in mainstream games

That's interesting. I never heard the term 2.5d before, but @3 that makes sense. When referring to audio games, the terms first-person v. 3rd-person are kind of gray, but, yeah, most of us probably think of games like Manamon as 3rd-person top down games. For games like Swamp (in terms of pure audio gaming) the sounds are presented in a first person sort of way so the differences are pretty arbitrary as far as how you want to imagine it in your head space if you are unable to see the screen. As a video game it could easily be either first or third-person and it would make no difference in terms of audio. But, when talking about video games, when you read reviews and such you'll see terms like first-person, 3rd-person top down, 3rd-person with isometric camera, 3rd-person over the shoulder view, 2d side-scroller, and I'm not sure what games like Mario64 were called because the camera wasn't fixed or over the shoulder. It moved around independent of the character's movement but the player had some control over it unlike isometric (or cinematic cameras).Resident Evil 2 is a good example of an isometric (sometimes called cinematic camera). The camera was always in a location that gave a more movie-like feel to it (not always in a corner or directly over head). These could present odd angles like a dutch tilt or forced perspective angle--whatever the developers felt gave the scene a more artistic look. This would present a blind gamer the most trouble I'd say because you don't always know what the angle of the camera is and it can be that the object of interest (i.g. a monster) is actually in the foreground while the player is moving toward the screen which reverses the directional controls.I think Final Fantasy 7 was also like this if memory serves.

Re: Audiogames as reference material for mainstream games

It seems to me that an annotated list would be quite useful for what you are going for. Like you have a list of various features and under each listing, examples of games that can be played (not games that are no longer available or unplayable without creating virtual machines of older operating systems) and/or actual audio or text guides that walk a developer through each feature.Example:Area radarA feature that alerts the user of near by obstacles or enemies. Some games use active radars that automatically trigger when objects or obstacles enter a certain range of a user, other games require an action to activate a burst that alerts the user of obstacles and objects as the pulse moves out from the user, some are monodirectional and others are omnidirectional, and some times ambient sounds are used such as wind or creaking noises to alert the user of near by doors or transitions.Examples include: Manamon (link to Manamon) ...Other resources: link to audio guide, link to text guide (or what ever else would provide useful information)Next featuredescriptionExample gamesOther resources... and so onThe point is to provide a single list of information that is easy to update, easy to follow, so any interested developer doesn't have to read a bunch of forum posts that can easily go on for hundreds of tangents--listing games that can't even easily be played any more.

The whole karma nonsense is very alive and well and built into most religions. It's most definitely not uncommon regardless of gender. Re: Final Fantasy VII needs Accessibility for the Blind

At 8I played them when I was sighted as well. They were usually pretty cinematic with very elaborate cutscenes  and in game detail slightly less in quality--depending on the game. They were designed to flow very movie-like and usually had varying, mostly static, camera angles.I have very little experience with any Final Fantasy games past 10.Prior to Final Fantasy 7, they were top down games with few cutscenes--like Zelda. And when there was a cutscene, it used the in-game engine. Again, though, it was very much written like an epic movie or fantasy with lots of emotional content.at OPI loved all those JRPG games and wish I could play them again.Unfortunately, I'm afraid all the naysayers are correct. Accessibility is best planned for and implemented at the beginning of any project, and I'm sure the Final Fantasy remake has been in the works for a long time now. They are well into the project. Doing anything at this point would be prohibitively expensive for very little financial incentive. The sad thing about all of it is, if it it's a turn based game like most of the others, it really wouldn't take much to make it accessible (assuming it's not too hard to connect to the screen reader). Out side of all the text in the game which can be read by a screen reader, much of what else you'd need is a simple audible radar type system to help with navigating. I'm sure the audio in the game is being tooled to bring the game up to modern standards which would have the side effect of giving us lots of audio cues.I'm afraid for all those old JRPG experiences, we are on our own for the time being. It's up to us to make good use of things like Ebon Skies' RPG tool or create our own.

I just don't have it in me I think. There's a caution here though. One of the things that comes out of world building is the boundaries of the world your characters are in. If a writer/content creator isn't careful they can accidentally find themselves creating a Superman type character where all challenges are met with a new power. If rules aren't set up and the line drawn, that's real easy to do.

Not every tool is right for every job, but it's there when you need it. And like any tool, you can shape it or adapt it to other needs.World building on the fly along actually causes your project to slow down and can lead to inconsistencies which means you'll have to do more edit runs in the end to make sure you've ironed them all out. Also, if you don't believe your world how are you going to convince anyone else too?

Totally agree Dark.To the genre thing: yeah, there are a bunch of unclassifiable games out there. I only meant to give examples. If you read "Save the Cat" by Blake Snider, he has a whole chapter on non-traditional genre writing. As far as that question goes, it doesn't matter what you define your project as as long as it makes sense to you.Though I think your example of Final Fantasy would fall under steampunk if I'm not mistaken. But, like I said, it only has to make sense to the project developer. It's only to keep them in a frame of mind--not to provide publishing material. If someone wants to call their project a "farmer goes dragon slaying adventure," I don't see anything wrong with that. Also, I never meant for all the questions to be answered. Obviously there a bunch of questions dealing with the rest of a world that would have no baring on a project that only exists in one city. Many questions are context dependent. That should be obvious.I tried to put the questions in a certain order so that if one was answered one way than other questions below it would be clearly not applicable. It should be pretty clear how much a project needs to be developed. If you need things to think about for how much you want to define your world then these questions are collected here. People who don't need detail aren't obligated to some or any of these questions. I'm just trying to give people things to think about. And if you're developing an RPG, or other deep story type projects, then world building is often critical to a good story--not always but often. Not all these things will even come up in the game. I think Lucas did more world building than you realize behind the scenes. It's not always about what's said directly in a story or glimpsed in the background, but world building helps any storyteller ground their story in a believable world rather the end user gets to see all the dials, switches, and sticky notes that went into the project or not.Brandon Sanderson has boxes of notes and notbooks filled with esoteric details on his Cosmeer that the reader will never even know about through his stories--same with George Martin, Tolkien, Herbert, and a ton of others.PS. Martin already knows who will sit the Iron Throne, and has since he began writing Game of Thrones because of world building.

World building

2019-04-12 Thread AudioGames . net ForumGeneral Game Discussion : skluttrell via Audiogames-reflector

World building

Thought I might try my hand at creating a master list of questions that would guide people in building a world for their game. I have RPGs in mind, but I see no reason why it couldn't be used in general world building--even for creating a world for a novel or whatever.Comments, suggestions, more questions are greatly appreciated.Part One: Building the worldWhat's the major theme of this world: mythical, Tolkien-esque, cyberpunk, steampunk, etc.?Also consider what your story in this world will focus on: is it a religious story? a political story? a war or crime story? Knowing this will help you focus in on the details that will really matter. But don't ignore the other details either. Background will make the world come alive (especially when we are talking about an audio game where we don't have the benefit of graphics telling our story for us). When answering these questions, I can't stress enough to be brief in the ones you answer. This is just to get a picture in your head of the world, not to create everything. Don't get bogged down being too verbose. You may find later that some of the answers you give don't really help move a story along, and world building takes long enough as it is without spending time on petty details. The shape of the world and its politicsHow big is the world: one large continent, a lot of small islands, several continents, does the entire story take place in one city, etc.?Is there a well known land formation in your world: the highest mountain, deepest valley, huge crater, etc.?What is trade like?Is trade international, from village to village along a trade root, or some other mechanism? What's the major obstacle to trade? Is there a major port of commerce or hub of travel? How do people travel long distances?Take time to briefly describe the first two or three locations, towns or cities a player might encounter at the start or end of a story. What is the political climate like? Are their large governing bodies? How were the governing bodies founded? Is there large scale corruption? Are there political factions and how do they get along? Is there a class system? Are there multiple races? Are those races integrated or segregated? Are people of differing races or factions feared or marginalized?Who gets to own land? What sort of laws exist and how are they maintained? How does the law handle crime? Is the law feared or respected?Do constables take pride in their work or are some or all of them fat and lazy?Is there a race or group that is unfairly targeted by the law?Are there gangs? Are there famous criminals?Describe how one of the more famous criminals was punished.Describe how one of the more famous law enforcers is seen by the people they serve. Are criminals famous or infamous? Are law enforcers famous or infamous?History and religionHow is history kept in this world? Is history passed down through stories and folklore or is there a major faction that keeps detailed historical records? If there are historical archives, are these records available to everyone or only a privileged few and why?Is there a fallen empire or people? What types of old ruins are scattered around your world?Do people know about the ancients that created them?Is there a famous explorer who discovered one of the landmasses or major land features? What are the major religions?Take time to describe some of the beliefs of your religions in a sentence or two each. Don't worry about fleshing things out. Just hit the major points. Example: Christianity is the belief that the heavens and the Earth are created by one god, that man exists in a natural fallen state, and that we must redeme ourselves through the Christ figure who sacrificed himself to atone for the sin of man in order to reach the ultimate heaven or peace. (It doesn't have to be perfect. Anything you write will lead to questions later that you can answer to fill things in.)Are there any rituals?Describe their temples or churches if applicable. How much are the daily lives of the average citizens controlled or influenced by their religion?Do the major religions get along or do they fight with each other? Are the nature of religious differences philosophical or war-like?What are some apocalyptic predictions in this world? Are the gods anthropomorphic? Are they talkative or showy?Do they show themselves to everyone or just a select few in the highest echelons of the religious? What happens when someone dies?Take time to quickly invent at least one legendary hero--someone people still tell stories about.IndustryHas your world entered an industrial age?Is there a large scale energy distribution network? From what is energy derived? Are goods manufactured? Is industry hated?Does industry pollute the environment?EconomyWhat is considered money? Are there different types of money? Is there a sought after resource? Are there slaves? How are the very old, women and children, poor and wealthy treated in the major cities, and how does that differ from the outermost

So this course will do me a lot of good in better understanding what's really going on under the hood.I did a lot of searching on YouTube a while back about how to get a radio kind of effect, so I kind of already had the idea of how to do it.I've also done some work in plosive and sibilance reduction. But most of what I know is just me being persistent and not being happy until I get the effect I want.

I didn't get it quite to my liking, but it's functional. I've done it better before. I just can't remember how.I also added some extra effects to the underwater one to give it that underwater quality where the sound kind of moves with the motion of the water. It could use some ambient water sloshing and bubbling sounds but I don't know how to do that, aside from just finding a loop of it and adding it that way.I think I got rid of the wind you were talking about--the breeze that hits the mic directly. I tried to keep the insect noises intact so I had to fine tune things a bit. There's still the ambient breeze sounds but I can't touch those without taking too much else out.
