What is the most up-to-date version of Entombed?

Hi. I'm having a bit of an Entombed phase at the moment. I currently have version 1.02J of the game. Is that the most up-to-date version? If not, where can I get a newer version? Thanks in advance.

Re: iOs Word And Puzzle Games Please?

There is a wonderfully accessible crossword game on IOS called Four Down. You can play 24 crosswords for free and buy another 24 as an in-app purchase. I can't recommend this game highly enough. It gets around grid accessibility by telling you what letters are filled in in each clue and letting you flick through the different clues. There's also a game called Braingle which has a mix of logic puzzles and problem solving tasks in various categories.I have a game called Song Trivia which, I think, is an anagram game. You need to rearrange the letters to make the name of a band or artist. I can't remember if you get any clues or anything with it because it's been a while since I played it last. I think some of the button labels are quite confusing but it is accessible. There's a very good and totally free language learning app called Duo Lingo. I know this isn't a game but, if you want something to keep your brain occupied, it's v
ery, very good. It makes you use different ways to learn words in a language lesson, such as matching pairs of words, typing words you hear or their translations, repeating words you hear or saying their translations, and reordering words to make sentences. There is support for loads and loads of languages on it.There's a word search game which I think is just called WordSearch. It's accessible, although wordsearches on the iPhone are super fiddly. Finally, there's one called Sudoku For All which, I think, is also free. This, again, suffers like the wordsearch game in that it's really hard to navigate the grid. It is accessible though.

No. You need text delay at 100%. That is the slowest. The text is delayed by 100% more than at 0%.

Re: Silversword IOS game is now accessible

I have already posted a link to the walk-through on the Silversword forum in this thread and in my response to the questions in the other new Silversword thread so I won't do so again here.Yes, the trap game is accessible now but it does take a little time to figure out. I will demo it in my audio review.I recommend the text delay set at 100%, the slowest possible. The combat messages do scroll pretty quickly and Voice-Over doesn't read them out without you selecting them. The text output is not quite at the top of the screen of your phone or iPad. It is near the top in the centre. You will have to scroll back and forth to find new messages and you will miss some.Spells have sound effects that are either a kind of tinkle or a sort of zooming sound. That is how you know whether spells have been cast.It is actually a bit easier to follow combat at higher levels as more powerful spells can affect large areas and you have time to catch up while th
e individual damage rolls are being read out.

Re: Help with SilverSword

The training hall coordinates at the castle where you start are X19 Y1.The plant for the herbalist can be found in the lowest level dungeon map. You can access it from coordinates X19 Y31 from the map south of the castle (named Road to Castle Cranbourgh). The developer has made it clear that the integrity of the maps is important to him as this game is created in the style of a particular mainstream game called The Bard's Tale. Apparently that also had complicated maps. I am suggesting things on the game's forum but RL has got in the way and development has significantly slowed down. The speed of combat messages can be changed. In the settings menu, accessed by a buttom at the bottom right of the screen, there is a slider control to adjust the "text delay". Note that the lower value, the slower the delay. If the delay is slower, the messages therefore scroll faster. In order to hae enough time to look at what is going on, start with the delay
turned way up. You will have to flick left and right through the text output area though (located in roughly the middle of the screen, nearer the top than the bottom), since Voiceover doesn't read the messages out without provocation. Also in the settings menu, there is a help option. The in-game manual is in there and you scroll through pages with 3-finger swipes up and down, like in other apps. You can also buy a slightly improved manual as an in-app purchase. I actually think this is a very helpful document but you'll definitely get what you need from the basic manual to start with. I also don't recommend making in-app purchases if you're at all uncomfortable with the game since it won't be worth it if you find it too complicated and put it aside for a while. The trap game is alright, the locks make a clicking noise which are different in pitch. You need to activate them in lowest pitch to highest, working from left to right with the buttons.
The thing to bear in mind is that the skill of your character also affects how quick and accurate you have to be at tapping the right button when the correctly-pitched sound plays. This does get really hard at higher levels but there are items called lockpicks that you can buy or find as loot. Each lockpick has 10 uses. Each use disables one of the buttons on the lock. It is possible, for example, to expend multiple uses of a lockpick on the same lock to disable all of its buttons. There is also a spell, called Trapzap, that one of the magical classes (Conjurer I think) can gain. Most traps you find that are random loot drops can be bypassed completely with this spell. Only important or quest-specific traps can't be. Thirdly, you can also try to smash the chest open. This gets harder as the locks get more difficult. I think the game makes a strength check. This is a time-consuming method of opening traps and it doesn't disable any harmful effects of opening the box. These
are bypassed when you pick locks or use the Trapzap spell.I said I would do a walkthrough of this game since, although it is very complicated, it is wonderful fun. I haven't forgotten about this, I just wanted to get familiar with Audacity and the game so that I can include the correct information. The Silversword forum can be found here:http://silversword-rpg.com/phpbb3/viewforum.php?f=1

Re: Entombed help?

This is quite a bad mix of characters for fighting the undead. Fortunetellers and barbarians do not go well as the same character.I have to disagree about ranger assassins though. It takes a round to set them up but they're one of my favourite classes. Max multi-shot and sneak attack and the damage on a quest group is absolutely insane. The best way to defeat undead is to take out the arms of the skeletons. They can't fight you then. You should also kill the necromancer so he can't bring anyone back to life.First turn, have your 2 assassin characters hide so they can sneak attack. Your barbarian should probably start hitting the arms of the skeletons. After that, see what the sneak attack can do.

Re: Tentative Entombed 2 Design Decisions

[[wow]], I didn't even know this was happening and now it's already in alpha testing? That's awesome. I absolutely loved Entombed and, occasionally, I will still have a go at it. I think I was one of those who put a lot of support and effort into it and was therefore disappointed when my $40 netted a wonderful story but bugs that would suddenly and irrepairably derail your game after many hours of play time. I also got frustrated with the fact that the encounter numbers were set so that you'd quickly fight everything on the level and and then wander around for aes on the off chance that the random loot items were going to be worth your patience. Silversword has random encounters but they continue, albeit diminishing in frequency, as you proceed through dungeons. I'd probably rather see that to keep some variety.I'm excited to see how this progresses, especially if the idea is still in for having text files with modifyable monster stat blocks an
d environment descriptions since I'm one of the many gamers who doesn't know anything about programming. I'm a writer though, and I create and run my own RPG adventures very frequently, so being able to create those visions as an interactive RPG computer game experience is pretty exciting.

Re: audio-based medieval virtual world

I would play the hell out of that game! The thing that appeals to me most about it is the ability to interact with the world. There needs - really needs - to be an audio-accessible large scale game that includes crafting and world building. The thing I get bored of with MUDs is that you nearly always have to slaughter your way through zones of monsters to grind money or XP. I really, really, really want to see a game where you can spend a day fishing and then sell the catch to the local market traders or donate it to the poor house for a different kind of bonus/alignment shift/achievement title. I want to be able to make simple leather tunics to sell to farmers or to harvest my own potion ingredients. I want to make jewellery that is just pretty and can be sold in towns. I think a huge virtual world where you can help a stranded caravan to find supplies and set up camp, pray with a group of monks, help the rangers tend forests and gardens by pulling up weeds or just plough your ow
n hard-bought field would be a phenomenal thing.Unfortunately, I have no idea how to do it either and appreciate just how much work it would involve. Good luck with the dream though.

Re: Silversword IOS game is now accessible

Regarding the lock tumblers in the chest game, there are different pitched clicks for each tumbler so that you can tell when it is time to press it. Basically, you must press the buttons, working from left to right as you scroll through the trap game subscreen with voiceover. You have to press the button as soon after you hear the relevant click and then you get a different click and Voiceover announces if it's gone red or green. Green means it's worked and you can move on to the next one, red means it's jammed and you have to use the unjam button to reset the lock. The pitch of the clicking tumblers seems to be lowest pitched first/left, rising in pitch as you turn each tumbler green when progressing to the right. Does that make sense? I find it works pretty well and I'm now on chests with around 5-6 tumblers to open. These puzzles only really occur at fixed points in dungeons where there are set items to find (particularly for quests), and after random drops
after you win a combat in a dungeon. You don't get them with random encounter battles just wandering around the maps (although some of the maps do have set chests and doors to unlock when you first encounter them).I would absolutely love to make a recording of this game but I need some advice. I use Audacity as my main recording software. When recording an iPhone game, is it best to record the game output separately or to just have it coming through the same microphone as my commentary?

Re: Silversword IOS game is now accessible

Yes, I guess I should have clarified that I'm Seeing-Eye Dragon on the Silversword forums. I intend using that name to make accessibility podcasts and Youtube videos, game reviews and walkthroughs and generally champion accessibility with a focus on fun and not practicality. By that I mean that I want to show that visually impaired people have just as much right to enjoy a device for pleasure as much as having it make every day life easier. That's the idea anyway.Back on topic though, slowing down the text output in the settings menu really does help with reviewing what happens in combat. Also, the 3-finger swipe up and down to review long combat rounds, during the rounds, also works. The only problem is that the new game round seems to reset the text output window so that you can't look over the last round's actions. Maybe some kind of continue button at the end of the round would be a useful feature so that at least you can review how your characters d
id and exactly how the monsters acted before moving to the next round? I'll propose that on the Silversword forum.

I've found that there is a nack to the navigation. I've learned to notice features to use them to orientate myself when heading in new directions, particularly on maps where I've spent a lot of time. The thing with this game is that it is a very big one so you have to commit to it. It's not quick and it's not easy so you'll probably not enjoy it if that's what you're looking for.The coordinates are definitely read with the two-finger double tap and they are useful to check if you're stumbling around the same bit of the map or heading in a new direction. Everyone learns Swamp coordinates for the purposes of avoiding obstacles so this doesn't seem that different to me. Still, each to their own, I suppose. There is a log but it seems more of a general log of your progress through the game than a specific combat review option. It would be good if I could get Voiceover to announce the scrolling battle text though. Does anyo

Silversword IOS game is now accessible

Hi,I'm delighted to say that an update this July made the fantastic Silversword RPG game accessible. It was originally considered accessible but there were some Voiceover issues with navigation. They're fixed and the game is probably the best IOS game I've found. It's a game in the style of a 1980s game called The Bard's Tale and it plays like Dungeons and Dragons and similar RPGs. You control a group of up to 7 adventures in a very large and immersive world with hundreds of items and monster variants. There's an over-arching plot but plenty of flexibility to just wander around and explore.Other good features, in my opinion, are the ability to create more than your 7 characters. You can have up to 25 characters created and swap which ones you take out. A massive in-app purchase expansion which not only gives you a kind of sequel game to the main one but also unlocks lots of bonus features right from the start of the main game. A wide selection of races and classes to play with plenty of weapons and armour to customise your party. A huge list of spells and skills to learn. Repeatable side quests. Resetting dungeons with many random encounters to give replayability. There's also much, much more.I really do urge anyone who enjoys RPGs to check this one out. I think the main game costs around £3.00 or so but it has hundreds of hours of gameplay and the random encounters and different character options means you'll get plenty of replayability from it. The game's forum also suggests that there may be another expansion on the way in the short to medium term future as well so there's going to be even more to keep you hooked. The game's website is:http://silversword-rpg.com/And it has a forum at:http://silversword-rpg.com/phpbb3/viewforum.php?f=1Enjoy!

Re: Silversword IOS game is now accessible

The two-finger double tap anywhere on the screen does tell you the type of terrain you're on, the available exits from your current square and your current coordinates on the map. You can also hear your footsteps so can tell if you're following paths or going on to some grass. In the settings menu, found near the bottom right of the screen (as far as I can tell) there is an option to slow down the text delay in combat so that messages scroll much slower and you can get more of an idea of what's happened. You can also flick through your party's general health and spell points levels between combat rounds to see if anyone needs healing or whatever. There is a help option in the settings menu with a manual. You can also buy an even more detailed manual as an in-app purchase if you want. The basic manual does explain some of the aspects of the game and I recommend reading it. Indeed, I refer to it fairly frequently. That, at least, is easy to navigate with standard Voiceover gestures. The in-app purchase manual mostly adds more detail about all the items and monsters in the game so is not essential. Also, the website for the game has a "lore" section which is worth looking at. The website link is in my original post.I will agree that the maps are super complicated and it is still the case that trial and error are required when navigating with Voiceover. One good thing is that the game does generate plenty of random encounters so that at least stumbling around the maps isn't uneventful. There seem to be some direction-finding spells but I'm not quite sure how they work yet. Unfortunately, the complexity of the maps is something the developer has directly addressed on the forum and it's here to stay. I've asked for more accessibility features in the "feature request" section though, including the ability to check if you've visited a certain square before or to mark a spot to orientate yourself from it (like in Shades of Doom). I'll wait and see if I get any response. It is definitely the case, however, that this game has a very busy interface and fiddly maps that do make it more of a challenge with Voiceover. If you're prepared to be patient and embrace the sense of adventure then it is really rewarding. If you're not comfortable with that style of gaming, which isn't at all a problem, this probably isn't for you yet. There is a very good and detailed walkthrough of the general things you're apparently supposed to do in the game on the Silversword forums. It gives you a good idea of the rough directions you should be heading for for each part of it. It helped me a lot although I will agree that the complexity of the map makes it less intuitive to follow the walkthrough instructions easily. You can find the walkthrough here:http://silversword-rpg.com/phpbb3/viewt … =742In general, my thoughts are that those who find the map frustrating, confusing and complicated are quite correct. I must admit that the style of the game really appeals to me so I was able to persevere and overlook the fact that I spend quite a while trying to find everything on the map. At least it's a way of getting XP and gold without farming the same dungeons. Besides, some of the Entombed maps got pretty big, laborious and complicated so it's not like we're completely new to that. I'd say that the main appeal of the game is the RPG element and the ability to control, with relative ease, a whole group of adventurers. The combat menus are easy to navigate so at least you don't get hacked to bits while trying to find controls. In combat you select the actions for each of your party members and then start the turn. As mensioned in a previous post, text then scrolls across the screen to show you what's happened, action by action, as your adventurers and the monsters fight. Once the round is over, you are presented with the screen for selecting the next turn's combat actions and can leave the combat menus there while you review the condition of your party to plan if you need to do any healing or anything in the following round.I do feel that the fact that the developer, a single person and not a company, has made such a large and vibrant game and still taken the time to implement Voiceover support is something I want to support. If the game doesn't sound like your sort of thing then that's fair enough but I've not found a more immersive and detailed accessible game for IOS (although I guess KODP comes close, despite having a different scale).Feel free to ask any specific questions that will help you play and I'll see if I can help.

KODP questions - how on earth do you keep the game happy?

KODP questions - how on earth do you keep the game happy?

I have a few questions about KODP. Im getting quite into it as an idea for a game because I do kind of like the roleplay and the idea of building a tribe. There are a few things that infuriate me though and I wondered if anyone has any advice about making them work.Firstly, mysteries. My tribe keep harping on about how I should sacrifice to a particular god to learn blessings. I put 2 points of magic into Mysteries, sacrificed 35 cows and 15 goods and still didnt get anything. Then its apparently my fault everyones still sad at sacred time. The same goes for questing. How on earth does it work that you can put 2 points into it, choose the right option (which you can only learn by trial and error anyway), and then it just says that it doesnt work. If you abandon the quest before your quester dies its then apparently your fault that the people are sad.It also seems difficult to make farmers happy (although that may be one of the most
realistic elements of the game). Ive tried not raiding, giving them gifts, sacrificing to cow and plant gods and allocating them more land. What can I do?Finally, is there a guide anywhere as to how much farmland, food and cattle you should have? Because food changes from season to season, its impossible to know how much is actually surplus to requirements. Theres also no guide as to how much land you need to sustain a certain amount of people. Please help because Id hate to give up on this game.

Hello,Im trying to perform the hero quest in KODP to make my clan into a tribe (sorry, I cant remember what it is called). It seems to tell me that I have to learn more about this before I can perform the quest but my clan ring are urging me to do it. What do I do?Thanks.

Re: Help: I've broken my Sixth Sense game

Ive worked through the first tutorial on that Looktell app and it definitely looks like it will be useful. Thanks again for that.Ive tried KODP and I quite enjoy it but I do find the complexity somewhat daunting. I absolutely love RPGs and I do a very large amount of tabletop roleplaying so I think the main block I have with it is more the iPhone interface than the game complexity. Then again, having to learn about all the gods, clans and such like is a pretty steep learning curve.I might check out the ChoiceOfGames stuff next. Im getting pretty good at Sixth Sense now and I was interested in the Nebula game but I think Ill stick to familiarising myself with the screen gestures before getting into games which require tilting. This is the main reason Ive not tried Nightjar and Papa Sangre yet.

Re: Help: I've broken my Sixth Sense game

Thanks for that advice. Im kind of getting the hang of the iPhone now and I do agree that the gestures are fairly intuitive. It is frustratingly slow to text with, even being good at touch typing and coordination. Im not keen to start using a bluetooth keyboard with it since thats yet another thing to carry around and it will be yet another drain on the battery to keep bluetooth running. I think its the terrible battery life of smart phones which gets to me most; my old phone lasted a good week if it wasnt used frequently so having to charge this one every day or 2 is annoying. It also defeats the object of a mobile phone if you can never actually travel more than a short dash from somewhere to charge it up. Oh well, one of the mysteries of life, I suppose. That aside, Ill definitely check that app out. A bit of free practise at phone gestures before I really start paying for games and such is no bad thing.

Yes, if you go bankrupt you should just get a game over message where you can read your final stats. There should be a funny sound where all the employees are sadly saying goodbye to one another and an option to view the final message in your in-box or leave the office. You then go to the main menu where you can just start a new game or exit.

Thanks for the additional app switcher advice, Dark. I dont have a particularly good relationship with my iPhone, especially because of how poor the battery life is compared to the ancient and venerable phone I had before.Im getting on much better with 6th sense now but it does have a tendency towards sensitivity. There seems to be something you can do which switches you to another ap. 6th Sense pauses but you have to go back to it with Voiceover on. When you start your game up, there still seem to be more zombies than when you left and you get munched. I think this probably has more to do with how bad I am at using touchscreens though, in all fairness.

The only bad thing about it was that I was supposed to be writing application forms for jobs. I really, really like how youll eventually get skills from all classes and only have to focus on the one youd prefer to start with rather than being stuck with your choice. Ive just finished a quest where you have to fight kobolds and undead in a temple of evil priests. Ive been through the kobold camp and the cemetery. Can anyone suggest where I should concentrate for XP now? As I said, Im level 21 with 12 in my primary class, 7 in my secondary and 2 in my tersiary. Im a cleric/druid/necromancer so far.

Re: Muds

Thanks for that.Thats something I found with Valhalla as well: once youve explored the places its safe to explore, you just grind the same zones over and over. Valhalla also has a mechanic where you die of old age but can effectively reincarnate yourself. To do this though you need to collect the heads of specific mobs and sacrifice them to the gods. Each head gives you points and you need a huge number of points to be ready for your rebirth when you die, or when you get fed up of your character as it is and voluntarily rebirth yourself. The point is that of all the magnificent world, only around 5 zones have heads where its even worth thinking about collecting them for rebirth points. This means, if you dont have much time to play, you find all your time taken up running the same zones for XP and heads to sacrifice. Valhalla is a huge MUD with loads of really thematic areas to explore but the options for what you can do outside of combat are l
imited so my enthusiasm for it only lasts a few months at a time. The point is that I guess Im saying that Im used to it so dont mind doing it in Alter. Its also fun to know about that review corpse command since lots of the quest areas (imp fields, cemetery, kobold camp and underground temple as examples) have almost all agro mobs. Ill definitely check out that nearby command as well to see how it works.

Star Conquest sounds a bit less exciting than Miriani to me. I guess I havent had the bad experience with Miriani that some of you have, maybe because I didnt play it for very long, but I dont like the idea of having to get all this profile approval. I was playing an amazing fantasy MUD called Achaea at one time but to get past level 20 you literally had to join a guild which had a 3-part in-game exam. Not taking the exam meant you couldnt play any more. It had such a wonderful class system and you could even turn into creatures which could fly. There was combat, crafting, a huge player base and so much to explore but seriously? An exam?I might give Star Conquest a go but Im having a Valhalla kick at the moment and Im really excited about trying Alter Aeon, especially if it has such a good sound pack. Ill leave space for now, I think.

I didnt like Achaea. The game itself was absolutely incredible because there was exploring, crafting, a huge world to explore, a vast range of races and classes to play, all kinds of spells and skills and the ability to fly and transform into animals. As I said in the Miriani thread though, when you get to level 20 you have to join a guild and that actually has an in-game exam. That seems way, way over the top! The combat system was interesting but very spammy because you make your attack but then have to wait to regain your balance before making another one. I liked the principle but it didnt feel particularly VI accessible.Has anyone here played Dark Moon? It seems to use the same system as Discworld MUD. Its a fairly generic fantasy MUD. I couldnt get into it because combat is mega spammy and my character is like level 15 or something and still cant manage outside of the capital city (which is absolutely huge!).Also, I played a
MUD once which you started at this refugee camp or something. I think there was some fields and a grave yard nearby to explore but I cant remember what that was. I remember that I really enjoyed it but it was years ago. Does anyone know what game that might have been?

I had to have an in-game interview with a guild leader with questions after it, learn the map well enough to find my way back to the guild base from at least 2 locations and, I think, demonstrate that I knew how to use certain class skills. I didnt finish it, partly because I didnt have the time and partly because I just wanted to play the game. That level of monitoring and politics was just too much for me.

I never got into the RP element of Miriani, Dark, but Id like to defend it. Like you, the appeal was all the wonderful sci-fi exploration stuff you could do. Hauling asteroids, atmospheric and planetary mining, archaeology, trading raw materials between planets; all of these are wonderful features. My Miriani character has been deleted now because I didnt get a chance to keep playing it but I had a wonderful time exploring and I only ever got hassled once by a guy who just docked with my ship then didnt do anything apart from prevent me from leaving. I put out a message for help and someone came and blew him up. That was the only time I got interfered with, partly, I suspect, because I kept quiet in all the RP channels. Maybe I was just lucky but I was actually thinking of starting a new character. If Miriani is now so bad for PVP, is this Star Conquest game another one where you can do loads of stuff like mining and crafting and manufacturing then?

Re: Muds

Im not sure if Valhalla has a low spam option. There are a couple of zones which kind of use spam as their challenge (by which I mean that a few zones have mobs which move from room to room a lot more). In general though, there arent really spammy combat commands or ridiculously long combats where you chip away at a monster for dozens of turns. I find it way less spammy than practically any other MUD Ive played.Revenge of the Jedi is a bit more Spammy and you do have to respond pretty quickly. Combat takes longer, especially because it requires different commands than just attacking based on your jedi powers or other class abilities. Also space ship combat, although by far easier than Miriani, is quite drawn out.If the sound pack really is that good, I may well give Alter a try then. Ive not done so before so dont have a character. Thanks for your advice on it.I have purchased the full version of VIP MUD but I think the problem is
that Ive not tried any proper sound packs apart from a Miriani one which everyone else said worked fine but I just couldnt get running.

Ive not had an alliance because it would be hard to control what the computer does. If it sends infantry to capture all of the cities then youre stuck with your small amount of territory and your ally would just get in the way. Ive not triecd though so that might not be right.Ive also not tried playing TOC in real time. The turns help a lot because there are so many units to keep track of that I think the game would get ahead of me in real time. The only problem with the game is that the placement of the computers territory can make the difference between whether it is winnable or not. I had to abandon a game once because the enemys land was very near mine and half my cities were in range of a Big Bertha artillery piece it built on its coastal city. That was the first time I saw what those bad boys could do and theyre terrifying! Fun to destroy them with bombers though since they cant target aircraft.

Id love to make a map where you have some kind of robot army. Re: Time of conflict strategy and/or recording?

SLJ, both of your questions can be answered together. Lists show you all of your units of a certain type. If I have 17 armoured units split between 3 cities and placed on sentry on my land, I will forget where they are. By looking at the list of armoured units I can read down all of the armoured units and it reminds me of their coordinates and whether they are damaged and on sentry. You can use shift with down arrow in the lists to highlight groups of units then wake them up or send a whole group to a certain place or attack an enemy or whatever. This is quicker and it means the game will sort them out in the best order to move them rather than when you move them manually and it either takes a long time or they get in each others way.Lists are also how I find out what units I have on sentry. I always leave some units awake, especially important or powerful ones, so that the game doesnt march for many turns when the enemy is close by. Using the lists you can arro
w up and down to remind yourself of all the units you have, where thy are and to wake up the ones on sentry. I think lists show enemy units of that type as well although you should be careful because the enemy may have moved and not still be where the list thinks they are because it takes its information from the last time your units saw the enemy. You can win the game by really quickly making infantry and sending them wandering across the map to conquer all of the cities. This only works on a land map though since there will not be any water to slow them down. If you have to take the time to build ships, the enemy will probably be ready for you when you get there. I prefer to play TOC as a long game though since just running over and making lots of infantry isnt really a challenge and doesnt really need much skill, especially on the small maps. I imagine land battles on the very big map are absolutely crazy. If playing long land battles, some of the things the eng
ineers can do are great fun.

Re: "New" Shades of Doom?

I wonder if we should try to focus this thread on the positives? The thread for SOD 2.0s beta release is pretty negative about the content and stuff. Perhaps we should balance this by remembering how innovative SOD felt when it came out and how it is clearly important to us or we wouldnt feel so strongly about this new release. The new sounds definitely help to give it more of a sci-fi feel and differentiate it from a standard zombie game like Swamp. Its now much more like Technoshock but without so much of the annoying lag. I will buy the new version just to hear what the later guns and monsters sound like.

Re: Experiences with Infocom

I dont think the verb issue would be such an emotive one if the verbs were linked with the descriptions on the screen. A lot of MUDs with puzzle elements, Valhalla for example, encourage you to look at objects in the room to learn about them and get clues as to how they might interact. I remember a puzzle in Zork II where you had to use some string and dynamite to blow up a rock which had inexplicably been placed across an entrance way inside a building(?) Obviously there is a way to do it but I never did solve how to make that device, no matter how many times I looked, examined or investigated the components. The idea of a much more complicated interface for IF-style games sounds too clunky for most single-player games. Theyre pretty much the point of most MUDs though where spells and abilities have been developed more fully. Many of them include verb help files as well. They are pretty big though, in most cases.

Re: Experiences with Infocom

Even though real-time FPS games like Shades of Doom and Swamp got me totally hooked, I dont think even Swamp gave me the same complete epiphany that I got when I started playing Infocom IF games. I agree with Dark in some senses because Beyond Zork was my favourite beyond any doubt and that was because it had an RPG element with asignable stats, a character levelling system and different options for what you could do with many of the items.I think that IF needs an absorbing atmosphere and compelling story. If it doesnt have that, its just a logic puzzle or flow chart. You could just make a maze and run your finger around it to solve it. That wuld get pretty boring pretty quickly if you didnt have something new and interesting at each corner to make you want to turn it and find out what came next. That was where IF really stood out for me: its ability to reel me into a story completely. FPS games are great because of the pace, the 3D environment and t
he sound effects but a good story trumps that any day.In terms of Infocom particularly, Ive always enjoyed it. I do agree that some of the puzzles were counter-intuitive and utterly bizarre. I pride myself on my random and unhinged thought processes but 1980s game designers were a whole level on from that.

I agree with Dark that theres almost certain not to be any kind of sequel. Resident Evil, from what I remember, didnt get that hung up on the point of the experimentations in the first place and so I dont think its the point of the game. The idea of SOD is just to rampage around and blow stuff up. Id expect 2.0 to just have more opportunities added for doing the same. Id advocate increasing the number of levels to 13 for dramatic purposes and including more monster types, weapons and equipment. Id also like more environmental features to interact with. The level 3 gas jet and the crate, toilets and sewer cover prove that the infrastructure is there for it to happen so heres to extra hazards and obstacles.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=176705#p176705

Re: most Memorable Interactive Fiction Story?

Ooh, interactive fiction! I cut my teeth on the Infocom games and I have truly wonderful memories of them. I originally had a set of 4 including Hitchhikers guide, Leather Goddesses of Phobos, Wishbringer and Planetfall. I dearly, dearly wish I could still get hold of these games now because Id truly treasure them.My favourites have to be Wishbringer because that was the first one I finished. I was also the right age for it to really appeal to me as a kind of sinister young adult fairy tale.I only ever finished the first Zork game but I played all 5 of the ones which were text only. Beyond Zork was probably my all time favourite interactive fiction game because of the RPG element where your character had asignable stat points and could gain levels and the atmospheric zones to explore and play through.Planetfall was a splendid example of a lonely stranded space adventure which I got very adicted to for a while.Leather Goddesses of Phobos was
a most unusual and entertaining game which I was far to young to have been allowed to play and which was therefore quite informative.I tried Trinity but but found it quite difficult. I also tried Arthur, Plundered Hearts and many other Infocom games because my dad and I got the Masterpieces box when it came out in the mid 90s. Oh how I wish I could still get hold of those games! Id truly treasure them now that Im old enough to actually think properly about the puzzles.OK, time for me to stop as well now. I agree with Guitarman that the grenades in particular were a super addition to the game.SPOILER ALERT!The boss level of SOD version 1.0 was just a big room with 1 boss. It felt that this boss was harder than the bosses in version 1.2. The thing I really did like about the boss room for 1.0 was that it had all kinds of walls and pillars in it which he could hide behind. I think that this should be added to the 1.2 huge room as well, at least a few of them anyway, because otherwise its really hard to kill the bosses with grenades as they run in at you.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=176592#p176592

Re: shades of doom update

An update to SOD? Freaking awesome! Until Swamp came along, I sincerely believe that Davids games were some of the best out there. I agree that Technoshock had many more exciting interactive features (like the pits and fireballs and such) but Shades of Doom had a wonderful atmosphere. On the subject of the SOD sounds, I agree theyre not mind blowing but I kind of like that. It always felt like a game that was all about the imagination. The lack of loads of ambient place markers kind of helped with the eerie feeling of an unfamiliar and abandoned base. Oh yes, why on earth would an abandoned underground base have passing cars?My main complaint about Shades is probably that it doesnt have much replayability. Once youve found all the tricks to the game and completed it, its done. The game is linear and fairly predictable so it doesnt really have any surprises any more. It still has the capacity to make me jump though, especially when I
m cowering in a doorway while laser bolts are ricochetting all around me. More monsters and levels would be awesome for Shades of doom, as well as maybe some kind of choice of your character. I suppose the latter would introduce more of an RPG element that isnt really the point of the game but still...Personally, given what an improvement the new Time of Conflict is, Im well looking forward to Shades of Doom 2.0. I only hope that Tank Commander is also going to be updated because that remains one of my favourite games ever.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=176531#p176531

Id probably say that I prefer Shades of Doom. Its longer and has more enemies and weapons as well as being more balanced. Technoshock is still really clunky, and probably only gets worse as Windows versions change, and I always found it lags too much. It has some wonderful puzzles and features though so is well worth playing. Actually, Ive never finished it.The only difference between Shades of Doom 1.0 and 1.2 is a much better boss level, an improved monster AI and ricochets with the guns, the addition of fists and grenades as weapons and the data wafer reader.
