Re: Monthly_chat("March",2021)

We're about to move out from my current house, because of reasons, I suspect this'll be a chaotic month for me. Come to think of it, I feel as if this year will be more chaotic and hectic for me than the previous year, since college will be over for me, and then I'll have to decide what to do with my life.I don't know whether people share this sentiment or not, but I feel as if people of my generation have a real hard life ahead of them in their twenties. And all those old folks advising us, they don't even realize that their advice is outdated, and is not relevant anymore. On the less serious stuff, I finished the equal writes, and let's just say I was very disappointed with this book. while the first two books of the discworld felt like a worlwind of adventure and chaos, with curiosity of a naive tourist sprinckled in here and there, this book just... doesn't matches them at all.I have heard a lot of praise for the Mort, let's hope that one would prove to be a good one.

So, I just finished The Light Fantastic, and I kind of think that it was a great book to conclude the trip of the first ever tourist.I also feel that in general this book had much more better plot, since Pratchett actually subverted the tropes which he was parodying. I also like the character development the characters have gone through. Rincewind may not be the best main character, but still, he did grew between the two books, from a greedy selfish wizard, to someone who went to the house of death to save Twoflower, he has come far in these two books. Now, let's see what Equal Rights has to offer me.

Well, the current data would make you believe that the cases in India have gone down from the numbers around September to November quarter, however I believe that people are simply are not tested anymore properly these days. Also, the arrival of the vaccine, undoubtedly is a great news, the fears of the public have still been not abated, especially keeping in mind the news related with my state's trial in the previous month's topic.Aside from that, there's a lot of political maneuvering going on currently, because some people screwed things up in the heat of their passions, or some other people screwed it for them and blamed it on them...Thankfully, I do seems to be progressing nicely in my plans, writing my fanfic, planning to open a blog where I would review anime, and movies and even tv series. I do want to have enough content by the time I open the blog, so I would be able to post something weakly at least.Visibility is important, you see. Also, I picked up The Color of Magic, my first ever Discworld book. Many people are telling me that I have started a ride which I won't be forgetting any time soon.@JayJay and all those who like cold:How unfortunate that I like the warmer seasons more. I can't read much English braille, was quite good at the Hindi, and now I am probably very rusty in the latter as well. But I don't think I would have very good reading or writing skills, if I didn't learned braille earlier.By all means, I agree that it is not necessary for every time you need to read, or write something. Not to mention, organizing my notes is easier now I don't use braille to take them. All I am saying is, that it has its purpose early in the childhood days.

Re: frustrated with blindness (read post if you want context)

Here is another thing which people might like to read here.My house is getting painted, so naturally all the rooms have to be emptied out, including mine. Can you imagine how does it feel when you watch your family struggling to move things, and set up temporary sleeping arrangement and such, while you just sit in the corner? Here's another example. My dad was hospitalized because of an accident in April 2020, since he works for the government, and according to the government, you do have to work, whether there's lockdown or not, regardless of your age and service you have already provided.so, when he went to a petrol pump, he failed to see the rope which was there to stop people from coming there since it was closed. (And I suppose that it was too much of an effort to put the sign of "We're closed.") because of the reflection of the sunlight, (And I do suspect that his eyesight is deteriorating slowly as well.)So, he lost the control of his bike, and the bike fell on top of him, snapping his left hip-joint, requiring an emergency operation, otherwise he would have lost the leg since the bloodflow completely stopped. If it weren't for my sister and her friend, imagine how hard it would have been for my mother to manage this. they took him to the hospital for the operation, in the time where the doctors were turning the patients away no matter how urgent, and when he was brought home, you know what I felt?A lot of self loathing. I couldn't help him in any shape or form during this whole crisis, aside from sitting grimly in my hall's sofa, listening his groans of pain. And here people talk about "Oh, you can do anything. Oh, it is part of you, accept it. Oh it is your identity, don't run from it."Ever since my late teenage years, when I got off from my high horse, and started to notice things around me properly, I have very few occasions to feel like this. But each and every time, my confidence takes a battering, and I always retreat into my room, and try to drown out everything with youtube or something.

I have personally have seven years of blind schooling, from the first standard to the seventh. and let me tell you, whatever problems I do have regarding math, it is their fault.True, you can argue that I was probably wasn't a great student or something, but tell me. Who the hell actually doesn't explain the order of precedence before algebra? Who was it who didn't explain what the hell is this thing called bracket even is? And don't even get me started on how fucked up things were with fractions and decimals were. No wonder that I have to go through khanacademy to fix the mess of my math skills. As for the guide dogs, they aren't even a thing here in India. I don't know of any organization which offers them here. But to be honest, I rather not go out here, the streets are very dangerous with packs of street dogs, out of control drivers, unrestrained cows... Even if you have a cane it is a high chance that you might end up hospitalized. Also a cure sounds nice, even if it comes during my fifties or sixties. And I completely agree, that it should overall receive more resources for the research.Too bad that I am not a billionaire.

If this is a wrong place to ask, I'll just create a topic for this question.(Though I rather avoid it. discord is much more prefered for such questions.)That reminds me, I'll go and install discord again.

So, returning here after my hard disk crashed, and due to my own stupidity of not backing up things, I lost two years worth of practice source code.I understand if some experienced developer is laughing after reading that, but seriously, you just don't realize at my level how much useful the practice source code could be.But of course, that was not the only thing which I lost. I lost my notes of my fanfic, my original story's notes, all the ideas I noted down, basically everything since I never thought that a hard disk would crash on me.I have learned my lesson though, and there will be backups. and the backups of the backups, and even more backups! So I never experience this feeling of stupidity ever again.

I don't know about boxing day, but I certainly have been watching a lot of boxing in past few days, which is a strange thing since it is very hard to see something outside of cricket, football, or pro wrestling in Indian tv.I suppose that is a good reason to keep the Euro sports around. As for me, I am almost done with _javascript_, and though I seem to have gotten over the trauma of java, (Just joking,) I do seem to have gotten myself in new headaches. Also, I actually tried to publish my articles on Medium few months ago, but I found out that their interface doesn't work well at all. I did made everything else work, but I couldn't find the publish button at all.I put a complain, I had a nice back and forth with one of the support guys, and nothing actually was ever done."Fuck it." I decided, "I'll just create my own blog."Then I ran head first into some other problems, as you probably can understand, creating and starting a blog isn't easy.It doesn't help that I do have to learn several other things, mainly node.js, git, TypeScript... the backlog is kind of swamping me currently.I do think that once I got creating and designing the site, and web hosting, I'll wouldn't have much trouble with advertising for the blog.Of course, for that I have to learn to use jekyll... Another thing in the backlog.

All I can say is that there is a big reason why I have nightmares of being trapped in school, never to escape, never to get out of there, never to study anything which I want to, always being forced to do things because "This is this or that great person mentioned in a book has done, so you must too!"In my twelve years of schooling, I have gone to the two blind schools, (Both of them boarding, and both of them I despise to this day,) and the sighted one, for the last four years, where I... just got burned out and didn't care how I ended up with marks. My mothers constant hounding didn't help either.

Actually, we were given homework of writing a page from a chapter of any of our subject books in braille.their were a lot of boys who actually managed to read and write at the same time, including myself. Though my speed of writing was cut in half. Also, I never used two hands for reading. It just never felt write to me. I had a real argument in the seventh standard with the guy who sat behind me concerning this.Though I admit, since blind schools don't give the same attention to English as they do for the Hindi, I still say that reading and writing helped me to get a sense of how exactly the process is supposed to work.there was a guy who complemented me in a chat, for using signposts correctly, while according to him sighted people don't even do that at all.

The curriculum is definitely different here in the blind schools, and I dare say that they are very much behind the sighted schools when it comes to math and science. As for braille for math? I'll see when I get on to calculous, (I am learning math from khanacademy since the schools here did such a shitty job, and left so many holes in my foundation.)For basic math though? I don't have reading it with screen reader, though reading on the browser, with rendered math text is annoying, since it takes a while for the speech to speak it, and it also tends to slow down the loading of the page.I prefer much simpler things, rather than rendered math.To be honest though, I don't see myself using braille for math in the future either. (Who knows? Maybe I'll eat my words when the time comes.)

Re: Braille: do you guys still use it in this digitalized world?

I haven't used braille for the last two years. To be honest though, getting braille books is hard here in this country, if you don't have connections to a blind organization, and they rarely, if ever, update their collection. That, and they only offer you the religious books mostly, in which I absolutely have no interest in.I only used it for writing notes in Hindi during the last years of my school, since the rest of the subjects I took notes on my laptop. But in the college, I didn't even have to do that, since the Hindi notes are also available.Another point about the books: I read many books, from programming, to wrestling history, to general uncategorized books. If I have those in braille, I wouldn't have enough room in my house to keep them.It also doesn't help that the braille books are often larger than their normal counterparts, imagine the size of say, c primer by Stephen Prata. That book has close to 1300 pages normally, I don't think it would be possible to print that in a single braille book.I don't use the braille display, however I am much more interested to know about the braille typing, as a alternative to the touch typing. Because currently, typing on the touch screen sucks.(Not that I would type code on my phone unless absolutely necessary...)

You can't honestly expect everyone to have the similar level of success like JKR, Tolkien, Sanderson, or hell, Jim Butcher. Please note that I am not questioning your writing ability, its the general way of operation of the publishers on which I was commenting.Charles Stross, has many times noted his own experiences with publishers, how they differ from his time, and he often gives advice to deal with them as well. I do suggest that you check out his blog for the advices. As for me, if I published anything, then it'll be over my own site, as a web novel. Perfect control over everything, though I'll have to advertise it myself, but that is acceptable to me for the control.

Almost all the matches are done, and yet which teams would qualify to the next round is still not clear. @35:Another example of monopoly is the American pro wrestling.back in 90's, there was a stiff competition between WWE (Known as WWF back at that time,) and wcw.As a result, both promotions gave their best, and it resulted in the largest audience for the wrestling during the late 90's.But when wcw was purchased by WWE, the monopoly was set, and no one has offered the competition to WWE ever since, (Aside from the modern promotion aew, which is too young to be judged yet.)Basically, it all alienated people who watched wrestling at that time, and modern day wrestling has barely enough audience now, compared to that time.Meanwhile, in Japan, even though NJPW, which is a big enough promotion which can be considered at the second place world wide next to WWE, there are many small promotions which offer great entertainment, and as a result, great competition. There would be another example if AMD for some reason went under, where intel and Nvidia would rule over the processors and graphics cards.

Okay, got few questions :How the duel booting is in the terms of screen reader functionality? Also, what about the Linux installation process? Is there a way to enable speech during that?In future, I'm thinking of installing a copy of Linux on a USB hard drive, would the Duel booting would be possible from there?Apology if the questions sound childish or basic, this is a new ground for me.

@Dark:If there is one comparison, then it would be the comparison of US and soviet union around the 70's and 80's. Politicians from both sides use the public hate for their own gain, and thus, keep the both countries on a near war like state all the time. Not to mention bullet exchanges and such every now and then. Thanks to Kenshira, I finally have a place where I can read the light novels. I have picked up A Certain Magical Index, exactly where the anime left the story, and there, for the second time, I encountered a an amusing US president.Just like Arthur from the Laundry Files, Reberto Katze sounds like a guy who might be a great president... around 50 or 100 years later. Because I don't see the current crowd choosing him. I wonder what Kamachi thinks of all about this? It would be a nice thing if he gave a interview or something regarding all of this.

Even if there's a sequel, there would be a new villain, since Relius himself doesn't seem to be into the mood of taking his place.I admit that Terumi probably got on the nerves of a lot of players personally, but but he is a entertaining villain, an absolute delight to see him whenever he was on the screan.(And the beatings which I gave him as a result in the continuum shift were also satusfying.)

Yeah, Tekken five was the first game I played in the series. It also caused me to froth from the rage dew to the beatings I received in the dojo mode. I still can't remember how exactly I did managed to complete that one. Now, if there was a way for something like, let's say, Kochikame would be there, I would have been willing to buy a subscription if they have one.But Baka-tsuki doesn't seems to be like that, it seems more like a community effort than anything else. There are many series I would have loved to read, Kochikame and Kinnikuman are among them.As for the BlazBlue, I haven't come across a villain like Susanoo in any other franchise yet. A large part why I liked the story was that the villain was so entertaining.

At certain times, it feels like more of a middle school anime, rather than a story about a girl who is the third strongest in the city where she lives.

In support to Munawar's point, there's a thing which I personally call white obsession.Basically it means that Indian people want to look white, whether it'll be through treatments, through products, or any other mean.in particular, there's a whole industry of products which promises you to look white, and there ads are also built pretty much for that audience, running them on the national tv to boot. For a month or so previous year, there was a backlash against it, but that died too very quickly. And of course, there is a problem of classism here, no matter how much people want to pretend that it does not exist anymore. It's just much more hidden, not gone completely.

For the ram thing, I read once somewhere that the operating systems do that because it is much more faster to get information from the ram, so if the ram remains unutilized, the system would use it.As for the flavors, I think I should start with one, stick with it for few months, and once I am comfortable, I'll try the other flavors. Also, I think instead of asking about various virtual machines, I should try them for myself, and see which one works for me the best.I do hope that the specs of my laptop won't get in the way of this.

So, I wasn't sure whether to put this on the developer's room or here, but in the end I settled on here since it doesn't have to do much with development. As the topic states, I want to start with linux, and I have few questions:1. I have been recommended virtual box, (Basically from outside of this forum,) and VMware from this forum. Which one should I choose, or why?2. I have heard that as a beginner, ubuntu is the most friendly. Is that true? or are there any better flavors to start with?3. I have been a windows user ever since I started to use a computer, so what I should expect in terms of difference in linux?4. in regards to programming, (This part was the reason why I wanted to put this on the developer's room,) is it better on linux? since I have gotten this impression.I understand that this might not be the first, or a unique topic of its kind, but I do hope you would be able to answer some of my question, and I would be able to move forward with this with the help of information gathered by this topic.

My maternal grandfather had a sword, which was often put into the rituals around Navaratri. Before my uncle took it in a fight, and lost it somewhere, probably to the police. There was this shop owner around whom I hung around my childhood since the shop was for the clothing for women, and my mother was friend with his wife. He actually kept a sword write under the futon in the shop, and I remember once he recounted some experience to other friend of his where he brings the sword out for some reason which I don't remember, and the other party promptly started their bikes and ran away.Aside from this, all the weapons I ever held or used were toys, from swords, to guns, to bow and arrows, I really had a nice collection. particularly with bows I was really good, since I could hit the targets just by their sounds. Though I'm very much out of practice these days, since it has been ten years since I held a bow in my hands. One of these days, even though I am grown up now, I'll still buy a set of sword and shield. They actually makes easier to enact the fighting scenes within my mind, which I can write into my stories.

Currently reading the fourth book of the merchant princes series, I am just surprised how fast I am going through this series. It took me around six months to get done with Laundry series, While this one it seems would be done by the end of October. And I must say, it is a very nice deconstruction of normal day character finding themselves in a fantasy world, or secretly being the member of a dangerous family, and multiple realities. On the side, I am also reading the book on the olympic history of India, which so far appears to be the only book of its kind, covering from early struggling years, to domination in hockey, and wash out of the hockey so much that India is virtually considered to be a non-threatening team. The author has written another book about cricket, (These books are written every year it seems,) but he appears to be very knowledgable of the sports history of the country, so I will give his book a chance.Aside from that, bad news from all over, let's just hope that this bad year of incompatence, viruses, and crisis would end already, and 2021 would not prove to be a full picture while 2020 presented just a trailor. Re: Improving your Chess

@32:you made a game of go? That's interesting, since I have tried to search on google about shogi and go, but I haven't got many good results, leading me to think that people simply don't create these games. As for c5, you probably are referring to sicilian defense, right? From what I remember, that one I put off since it has too many possibilities to explore since at that time I was not used to such a huge opening.Once I am done with queen's indian defense, I'll go to the sicilian.

Re: Improving your Chess

apologies for the double post, but I would like to inform you guys that I have joined the playroom, (Why does that brought a image of kindergarten in my mind?) and played and lost already. So none of the fear I mentioned which in my previous posts. though I want to know: aren't there any command which tell you that a particular piece is threatened?Winboard has spoild me I tell you.As for the loss? I admit, I am holy unprepared for any response for the e4, thus it was deserved. now, if only he had tried d4...Still, as good as I did probably was because I am used to playing black. otherwise, I would have been crushed long before then. Also, it seems that it is very common that people keep a physical board with them while playing, I used to think that I am the odd one out.

Re: Improving your Chess

@23:Thanks for that. I used to think that it might have the same commands as the winboard, but it's a good thing I asked here, since in the winboard you do the job of selecting the pieces, and dropping them on their intended squares by space and enter both. (Dew to my lazyness, I do use space in there all the time.)I wonder how would the experience be like playing against a human on a computer? Since a computer engine is frankly, a force of nature which can give losses to the grandmasters, unless I play with extreme time difference, I wouldn't have a chance.

Re: Improving your Chess

@18:high five, because I like king's Indian defense as well.French defense for the few times I have tried it, seems like very crampt to me, so I decided to not use that one.But in general, Indian defenses, (King, queen, nimzo,) do work out nicely for me against 1. d4.And, there's another thing: I do want to join in on the room, but you know what is holding me back?Around 2016 or so, I tried playing on quentency's playroom. But I couldn't even play a move since at that time I didn't know how exactly am I suppose to move my pieces. (Admitedly, I didn't have the knowledge of chess as I do now.) it was highly emberrassing for me.That, and the hesitation if I didn't provided you guys with a challenge, you guys won't play with me anymore. These are silly reasons I know, but they do stop me from joining in.Also, for the clearafication, it was not that I didn't know how to move the pieces in chess, but I couldn't figure out the commands to move them in the playroom.

Re: Improving your Chess

Regarding the queen, I used to think that way once. But honestly, if your queen can serve a better purpose somewhere else on the board, you might as well as send it there. No point in keeping it until the end, when you might find to you're surprise that the queen is not enough to ward the defeat off, or give you a victory. As for the fear of losing it? I don't think anyone can get over it until they have played few games with someone. The reality of chess is that every piece can be lost, and you just won't be losing the pieces: you will be losing pieces. So, made your peace (Please forgive me for that,) with that fact, so you can play much more better without the burden on your mind.I would definitely like if someone posts some video links regarding to some openings, mainly King's Indian defense, Queen's Indian defense, Caro  kan defense, and Nimzo Indian defense. One final thing: if you are a beginner, note that almost all the openings of the white are called some sort of attack or an opening, while the openings for black are called defenses. So all the openings I mentioned above, are for black. This, of course is not universal, but it is pretty much standard as I haven't come across many openings which do differ from this standard.

Re: Monthly Chat - August, 2020

@Dark:It was just an observation, nothing more. as long as the story is interesting, and the character through which I am seeing that world doesn't cause me to get angry, I'll read the books whatever gender the protagonist may have. Also, you of course are correct about Dresden's attitude, if he was powerful let's say, during the end of series, teaching some young mage, imparting his experience, it would make sense. But his current power does not.I often think that around somewhere in the middle, the planning got away from Butcher.Meanwhile, The Hidden Family, the second book of the Merchant Princes series, picks up right when the first book leaves. Charles once said on his blog that the publisher forced him to split the novel which he initially submitted as a one book into three parts, and it kind of shows here. This is all the more evident comparing to the Laundry series, even though those books do take place after each other, they often have gaps of few months to two or three years between them. Yet, here, the events proceed directly from the first book, with only few days of gap between them.

Re: Monthly Chat - August, 2020

@Dark:you won't find the old fashion attitude of Dresden in Codex Alera. Though it does go all over the place with the concept of lady in distress.first of all you have Isana, who often ends up as a hostage, but considering she is not a fighter, that does make sense. Then there are ladies like Amara, trained as spies, despite able to hold their own in a fight, they can't exactly go tow to tow with the powerhouses of the world. And Then there is this noble lady named Placitus, who is among the powerhouses. As for the powerscale, I can't say much about that since the characters do get powerful as the series progresses, but their enemies always outclasses them at every turn.in other news, I picked up the merchant princes's first book, another series by Charles Stross, after reading the Satturn's children. Both books have a female as a protagonist, and considering the Laundry Files which also have two books which have females as their main focus, I never thought that I would be reading books like that to be honest when I began to read.I of course, don't mind it at all, but it is surprising all the same.I'm thinking to start with the discworld as well, that should keep me entertained for a while.

Re: Good Chess Materials?

I find when it comes to openings and gambits, wikipedia is a good source since they often describe the [possibilities with a particular opening and gambits, as well as give examples of players who have been successful with them in the past, whether they are explored and used anymore or not, etc. etc.But please note that the quality of the coverage may very among them.I spent a lot of time looking for books on chess tactics last year, and I looked at a lot of them, from books which offered thousands of puzzles, to famous ones like the woodpecker method. But in the end, I couldn't get anything out of them dew to the way they were written.@Jayde:What videos would you recommend? Do they describe their moves or something? since otherwise I don't see how exactly the videos would be useful with someone playing moves while there is music in the background.

Re: pissed off about accessibility guides

It might be off topic, but Jayed's post reminded me of a question about which I think a lot.If there were to be a society which doesn't value money as the current world does, what would happen to the creative professions?Like would we have more people who are willing to be writers, musicians, chess, or any other field in which people would enter just because they want to, not because of money?
