Re: We need more control over our own topics please. @Ttslover0987814I agree with you. Unfortunately as others have pointed out, such a feature has caused issues in the past. Re: Suggestion Regarding the Forum and Problematic Posts Dan_Gero wrote:What happens when we try to solve our problems by reasoning with people who can't be reasoned with? Eventually, it'll be seen that we can't get anywhere with those people, so the admins have to caution, warn, or ban them. That does work out for the time being, but what happens when another person comes along to make trouble again or the same person gets around their ban? We get a repeat of what happened before, and then everything comes full circle, and people still want to stay away from us because they see us as toxic and unproductive. This is unfortunately just how life works. You'll always have bad apples in a bunch here and there. There'll always be people who can't be reasoned with. Sometimes this is because they're mentally broken and can't help it. Sometimes this is because they just don't give a damn. I like to think that most people can be redeemed, but sometimes extreme measures have to be taken to deal with them.No society is going to be 100%perfect all the time, and I agree with others that trying to bury everything that's bad is probably not the best solution. Re: We should be able to delete our own topics! Probably because up until recently it was an option for the longest time, and I'm not sure how common someone deleting huge threads was. In my case, I don't enjoy having things that I know how to use responsibly taken away just because someone else can't use them responsibly. Instead of punishing the people who misuse something, the thing just gets taken away from everyone. Unfortunately that's probably due to the limitations of the software in this case, so I understand. Re: We should be able to delete our own topics!
Re: We should be able to delete our own topics! The only thing I can come up with is a compromise, and it's not perfect. Turn it back on for now, but if there's trouble and people start using it to hide their wrongdoings, then off it goes again. Or just make a zero-tolerance rule against it. If someone's found guilty of deleting topics to hide, then to Banville they go for a few months. Then again, people can still delete separate posts that aren't the topic starter or edit their posts to hide anyway, so i'm not sure what the point is in that context. The only real reason I can see for leaving it off is when people just mass delete things and wipe out posts from other people as was talked about before. Re: enough is enough, and it's time for a change.
Re: enough is enough, and it's time for a change. Putting aside whether or not the assets are legal for a moment, audiogames probably aren't the only things that make use of stock sounds. Sometimes sounds in an English dub of an anime (like Yu-Gi-Oh!) have sounds changed to more familiar ones. Sometimes it isn't obvious when you're focused on the story. I'm sure plenty of mainstream games use stock sounds as well. And really, that's what they're meant for. Reuse. It takes some of the pain out of sound design, and not everyone has the ability or inclination to design sounds from scratch. Would you rather pay once for libraries that can be used multiple times, or pay for the services of someone else multiple times? All that said, Sound Ideas does have designer toolkits. These are collections of various sounds that can be mixed and processed to make entirely new sounds. People who want to avoid stock sounds can invest in these and attempt to make something new for certain cases. Failing that, stock sounds can be mixed and manipulated as well. Re: enough is enough, and it's time for a change.
Re: enough is enough, and it's time for a change. Just because Nintendo's game sounds can be found on the internet doesn't make them public domain, and it doesn't mean Nintendo wouldn't care if someone made a game using said sounds. We'll never know if Nintendo cares unless a couple things happened. Either AudioGames.net or Pragma gets hit with a copyright notice, or someone gets in contact with Nintendo and asks them. What the moderators want to do is protect AudioGames.net from possible legal problems, even if problems are highly unlikely. also, how do you think it looks to mainstream developers when audiogame designers use assets that aren't theirs? How do you think it looks when nothing's done about it?At this point I'm just reiterating what's already been said. I think we all are. Re: enough is enough, and it's time for a change. Going back to the rule suggestion for a moment, relying on the owner of sounds to complain won't work for things like Crazy Party or the Alter Aeon soundpack. Re: This title needs to go
Re: This title needs to go The thing is, it's not always easy to explain something so personal. Even if Haily tried, it's entirely possible that people would just tell her she's being silly all the more. Fortunately, you can read about how to drive a car or use Voiceover. Haily explaining exactly why she doesn't want to have a title that she feels misgenders her in a way people can understand and relate to is most likely not that easy.Again, I think we can safely categorize this entire thing as a miscommunication and leave it at that. Had I understood what she was trying to ask for a little better, I for one wouldn't have come down so hard on her original post, and I was really trying not to sound too harsh as it was. Heck I probably wouldn't have bothered responding to it. So, again I apologize. We're human. Mistakes were made. Let's acknowledge that and move on. Re: This title needs to go
Re: This title needs to go I concur. Changing her title to something else for the time being would probably be the most reasonable option at this point. Whether this should be handled on a case by case basis in the future though... I don't know. I can see the potential for abuse. Not by staff, but by people who just want a title change just because, and are willing to fake some reason to change it.The other, less popular option would be to go through all the titles and make them gender neutral. I'm personally not a fan of this one, because it seems extreme and unnecessary as I said before. The fairest option for the future would be to make titles based on a gender option, but this would probably require the webmasters to get involved. Re: This title needs to go
Re: This title needs to go What I'm about to say may be seen as slightly offensive, and for that I sincerely apologize. No offense or disrespect is meant, and I'll make every attempt to be gentle here. I have no issues with trans men or women. Actually I think something similar was said in another post somewhere, and it actually goes beyond transgender folk. So, crossing my fingers and hoping this doesn't degenerate into a flame war that the moderators have to extinguish. I've been noticing a trend, not just here, but everywhere in general. We get minorities who feel or are actually being oppressed. Sometimes it's race, disability, sexual orientation (or lack thereof), etc. This is, of course, unacceptable. No one should be oppressed or discriminated against because of who they are. It's my belief that as long as they're not hurting anyone, everyone has the right to identify with whatever they want. It's no one else's business.however, what I'm starting to take issue with is when people blatantly call for radical and unnecessary changes to things that are just fine the way they are. They want to be heard, great. They want to be treated like everyone else, great. They want to be accepted, great. But do we really, honestly need to change every single thing to conform to all these different gender options? Isn't demanding that sort of taking things a bit far?The title of Playroom Playboy applies to everyone. It doesn't matter if someone identifies as male, female, nonbinary, or whatever. It's just a rank, and honestly I've never, ever heard anyone born the opposite gender call for a change to names with the word king, playboy, etc. Now, that doesn't mean that no one has; I've just never seen it here. In a perfect forum world, I could see gender options and dynamic titles based on whatever option someone chose, but really... Can't this just be left alone? Is it really that big of an issue, or am I just insensitive? I sure hope I'm not. Also, I believe she asked not to be called by her former name. Re: how far have we really taken these rules on the forum!
Re: how far have we really taken these rules on the forum! Right. Well, regardless of our individual feelings about this, we need to do what's right according to copyright law if we want to avoid the forum getting into any legal trouble with 100% certainty. We can sit, stand, lie, cartwheel, levitate, jog, or whatever here depending on our preferences when accessing the forum and debate all we want, but we're getting nowhere fast. This is what I suggest, and it's likely going to anger quite a few people. Some of these things have already been suggested at one time or another.1. Remove Crazy Party from the database until we can be sure it has no pirated sounds, and forbid anyone to link to it as per rule 3. No beating around the bush, no debates, just remove it and be done. End of discussion. People can still play it, and that should be good enough.2. Refuse to add games to the database if they're found to have pirated sounds from well-known games, movies, TV shows, etc. We obviously can't do anything if they're stock sounds anyone can buy or download for free, but we can forbid games with obviously pirated sounds.3. Refuse to add games to the database if they're based on an existing copyrighted work without a license. This means no Star Wars, Star Trek, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc.4. Remove any and all existing games from the database that violate the last two on a case by case basis. This means no one would have to comb through the database unless they really want to, but some effort should be made. Yes, this also means Jim kitchen's games, GMA's Star Trek game, Clash of Lightsabers, etc. This is all or nothing here.5. Do this as soon as possible so we can get back to discussing audiogames instead of going round and round in circular debates about copyright that make me want to slam my head into a wall. I mean... unless people like discussing that sort of thing. But for the love of all thins both holy and unholy, we need to take an official stance as a community and stay there. Are some of these suggestions a bit draconian? Well, sure, but so is copyright law in a lot of instances. That's just the way it is right now. As it is, I don't personally see a problem with what was done, mostly because no one's making or losing money. However, even though I feel that way, I would have to put that aside and do what must be done to keep the forum out of trouble if I was a moderator. That's what the moderators do here. Re: preparation regarding copyright
Re: preparation regarding copyright yeah, I get you. It's just sad that copyright law is used to push people around. I get that it's meant to protect content creators, but some actions that are taken in the name of that protection go way too far. This is especially when people aren't even meaning to break a law or cheat content creators out of money. Re: Was the forum interface changed?
Re: Was the forum interface changed? What about a layout based on IP? Last time the layout was changed for me, I was getting an extra forum field that I was supposed to leave blank for anti-spam purposes when posting. This was happening on both IE and Firefox. However, when I tested a proxy server, the page was rendered as it should have been. After a few weeks, it corrected itself. Re: What in the world happened to the forum? I'm starting to wonder if this is to blame. It's before the head section of the forum's source. AS it is, I can deal with it if it won't be fixed. Re: What in the world happened to the forum?
Re: What in the world happened to the forum? eh, I don't know. It can't be just my browser if Aprone's display has also changed. Further evidence against that is the fact that it happens in firefox as well as iE, and if it as a setting, deleting cookies should have fixed it. As I also said, the links to login, register, etc, are gone from the site when not logged in. I had to attempt to post something as a guest before I could even get to the login page after deleting cookies to see if that would fix this. I now also see an anti-spam field when posting replies whereas before I did not. Re: What in the world happened to the forum?
Re: What in the world happened to the forum? Hmm. Maximizing the window doesn't seem to do anything. This is happening in both IE and Firefox, which is what made me think it was the forum itself. Yes, I did delete all cookies and browser cache.Edit: On a hunch, I tried viewing the forum through a web proxy. It displayed correctly. Could it be that my IP has been flaggd or something? It would explain the anti-spam fields I see now. What in the world happened to the forum?
What in the world happened to the forum? The forum display seems to have changed. There are bullets where there used to be none, such as where poster information is displayed. The report and quote links say report post number and quote post number. The login and register links on the main index page seem to be gone. The headings for posts seem to be split, so you have to navigate to the heading and then press down arrow to activate the link. At first I thought all this was just me, but I found an archived version of the main index page on archive.org that displays correctly. This started happening some time yesterday.
