Re: A Chrono Trigger project

Yeah well, Im not gonna bother about it until something is actually released. Im done with hoping that developers for the blind gamers will ever get passed walk left or right, press space to kill the bad guys that say die die die over again and again as they get near you and just keep walking and jumping and kill people with a press of the space bar until you here the happy dance music kind of games. Im sick of it.

Great work on the demo. I cant help but wonder though. If this project goes well, could the same thing be done for other Square titles? I personally wouldnt mind being able to play Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore sounds interesting as well. And of course, the Final Fantasy games. This is a little off topic, but I wonder if it is theoreticly possible to connect a real SNES to a capture card, and have an NVDA add-on that intercepts the video and reads out the text.

onto your Super Nintendo motherboard, which Ill classify as impossible. And using the video capture stuff, while possible, would probably be much slower, and much much harder than what Im currently doing, which is hard enough.Sorry its not better news.

Re: A Chrono Trigger project

Dark has contacted them (and Capcom); Nintendo and Capcom appear to be the two biggest game companies least interested in accessibility (some Capcom titles are reasonably playable in spite of this; see Stereo and screen announcements in Street Fighter). In addition, Hatred contacted Nintendo when he wanted to make an accessible Pokemon game, and the response as I understood it was something like, We receive more requests than we can reasonably investigate, so we default to no for all of them. This does not mean you would not be protected under fair use, but youll have to find and ask IP lawyers on your own, and we really dont want to deal with it so please just shshsh.Which Im interpreting as Ask us no questions, and well tell you no lies.Which Im sub-interpreting as So long as we dont hear about it, you wont have to worry about contesting a DMCA takedown notice, which you may or m
ay not win. So Shshshsh.I still encourage people to get a legal copy of the games in question anyway, just so it cannot be said that this hurts the companies in any way. But realistically, they arent suffering any damages when a demographic excluded from their releases plays something extremely similar for free, so the only question is whether or not their regular audience will be affected. It emphatically is not.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=177135#p177135

Re: A Chrono Trigger project

Hi 3blacknoises,I agree it would be nice to only add such accessibility features to copies of the game that are purchased through normal channels. The problem is that this is not realistic. The method of using an emulator to add accessibility features is already quite challenging. You said yourself that you were not even aware it could be done.If I were to try the same thing on an actual Super Nintendo or Nintendo DS I would have to introduce hardware that sits between the cartridge and the gaming console. Not only would it make things very expensive for me and for anyone who wanted to play with accessibility features, but it also makes the programming much more difficult for various reasons. If I went down that route I have no doubt the project would never reach completion. So Im left with 2 choices:1. Continue with the project as planned and rely on individuals to obtain a rom in a fashion that is legal in their country and leaves them with a good conscience. Perhaps by purchasing a valid copy of the game on another device even though it will never be accessible on that device.2. Cancel the project.Which do you think I should choose? As an aside, you said: The parts of snes9x and the crono trigger rom could be packed in a dat file and shipped with an executable to run this thing. That way, nobody is committing piracy.I say: Sorry but that doesnt make any sense. By doing that both the Snes9X creators and I would be illegally distributing copies of Chrono Trigger. That seems worse than leaving rom acquisition up to individuals.Perhaps you meant Id have to work with Nintendo so that they could then charge for the game with accessibility features. That would be nice, but again, not realistic.Nintendo has no interest in working with me to make their games accessible to a handful of blind players. As another aside it would seem that you are illegally distributing Nintendo and Capcom copyrighted sounds and perhaps music in this thread:http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?id=12517Specifically it looks like you are distributing content from these Nintendo and Capcom copyrighted games:Super Mario Brothers,The Legend of Zelda,Metroid,Kirby,Mega Man,and Pokémon.Im not an attorney so perhaps this falls under some sort of fan remake allowance law.If so, Id love to talk to someone who is knowledgable about that because my project may fall under similar laws, especially since I am not distributing any Nintendo roms. You also expressed an interest in knowing how adding accessibility features to a Super Nintendo game can even be accomplished.Id be happy to explain this over the phone.Feel free to email me at supp...@blindaudiogames.com and we can setup a call.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=176122#p176122

K jones, I just thought of a way this could be done, but it would require the people who made snes9x and the person who is making this project to work together. The parts of snes9x and the crono trigger rom could be packed in a dat file and shipped with an executable to run this thing. That way, nobody is committing piracy.Im only concerned because Square has shut down crono trigger mods in the past, as they do not like anyone anywhere modding crono trigger for any reason whatsoever.I know the cause of making this game for the blind is noble and that no profit is being made from this effort, but Square wont think that way if they should find out about this.Theyll just issue a sease and decist, and that will be that.Yes the game is still being sold through the wii shop and soon the wii u eshop. You can also buy it as a ps1 classsic through PSN.The mario games can be bought through the wii u eshop and wii shop and 3ds e
 shop.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=175916#p175916

This is a 2d top-dow game, meaning you go in all directions.Their is no jump buttton, and all fights are controled witha menu enterface. This is a classic JRPG game, Japanies role playing game, so lots of things are done with menus.Im blind myself, but I have the game and would love to see a project like this come to completion.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=175836#p175836

Re: A Chrono Trigger project

Is the game still being sold through official channels? Id figure it went out of print at least a decade ago, if not two.Really, when the lifecycle of a console is over and the games arent being sold anymore, Im not really sure Id call ROMs piracy.True, some older games get re-released, mostly in compilations. And Im totally down with buying those (On that note, are the original NES Mario games available for, like, the Wii, or possibly the DS? I already have the Sega Classics collection for PS3).But between the fact that the originals are inaccessible (making buying them as blind people kinda weird), and may or may not even still be available short of EBay (which does not benefit the creator, just whoever owned the cartridge last), and the fact that, simply put, the only way were going to be able to add accessibility would be through an emulator... well, forgive me for not feeling too horribly unethical about ROMs.That
said, I usually make a habit of only downloading ROMs for games I actually own, which Id consider a decent principal if youre concerned about piracy.(Anyway, Chrono Trigger in particular was developed by a team of quite popular developers/artists/composers/writers, so you can probably hunt down stuff of theirs that theyd still benefit from your purchasing, if youre particularly torn up about it. The only member of the Chrono development team I can remember off the top of my head is Akira Toriyama, because I didnt actually pay that much attention when I researched this 6 years ago.)URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=175865#p175865

Re: A Chrono Trigger project

Ok so my brother recently played and beat it but its a quite rare game, it being an RPg and next to pokemon its one of the best ever. Because of its rarity its no surprise many havent played it. It was far ahead of its time in its varied play style so if you pursue this project which would be awesome than understand that its fairly in depth. For instance there is one part in the game where your stealthily moving through i think it is a ship and you have to view exterior cameras to see where to walk but if you can do this it would be awesome. Again this is an awesome game that would be great if everybody would be able to play.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=175673#p175673

A Chrono Trigger project

2014-05-30 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — General Game Discussion : ianr via Audiogames-reflector

A Chrono Trigger project

Hi all,Im looking for fans of Chrono Trigger who would like to be early adopters of a project Im working on.The project adds accessibility features to Chrono Trigger when played in the Snes9X emulator.Currently it is able to detect and read NPC dialog. It can also read the text displayed on the party menu such as character stats. It is still very much in prototype form and needs a lot of polish. As I get further I hope to add these features:1 Announcing the currently selected menu item.2 Audio cues that tell you when you are moving and in what direction.3 A menu that announces visible NPCs or containers and their positions on the screen.4 A grid examination tool, like the camera in BK3 or the grid view in Tactical Battle.5 And a few others. If youve played Chrono Trigger before and are interested in this project please send an email to supp...@blindaudiogames.com to let me know.Dependin
g on peoples level of vision and interest in the project I will share early versions of the project. For instance, if youre able to play most of the game using your vision, but cant read the NPC dialog then I could polish up the existing features and get you a copy that would be of benefit to you now.As more features get added it will become useable for more people. Thanks,Ian ReedURL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=175525#p175525
