Nina, have you read through all of the posts in this topic? There are some excellent tips in here, from wall placements to good perks to select. The only thing I suggest is to ignore any statements that say growing your population is a waste of time. Youre never going to reach the scoreboard with only 12 or 14 people.I think I figured out Rockys 7-wall placement, and was attempting a mission when all of a sudden, 9 people caught the plague... including my chef, innkeeper, and physician. Most others were occupied with things such as collecting stone from across the map, and I couldnt get a replacement cook/doctor in time to save everyone from starving. Feeding that many people is rough! So, I think Im done with this contest. Hopefully my latest entry can hang onto the scoreboard, if not, this was much fun and I can only request that RockyWaters invite us to the party he could easily throw with all that money.

I just had to have another go, trying to find the optimum strategy. I did not believe this was possible a week ago. Built 7 walls, built 10 tutor houses, got a population of 70, burned the houses, built a mine a forge and a barracks and a stables and some more farms on the land with the bricks and timber. Upgraded 6 knights, 6 cavalry, 7 rangers, and 7 pikemen, and used 44 tomes to upgrade everyone else.Not really fair if I get all the top prizes - so heres some more hot tips:Keep everyone busy, use the v key to check, and reassign them. Always heal the sick. One veg farm will do to begin with. A hunter is better once the butchers shop is built. Concentrate on the economy after the walls, which means build houses. Build a tannery and a monastry to get some tomes and upgrade key workers, this helps the economy. Build an animal farm to generate more furs for the leather workers. With an animal 
 farm and a bakery you will need 2 then 3 wheat farms then even more if your population grows. All this needs land of course, which depends on getting the walls up in the right places and in the right order. The goblins come in first at E1, then A5 and I1 and N5. So block E1, H1, I1 and C5 as priority. If youre not quick enough, then E2, H2, I2 and C5 will have to do.Theres an easy 4 wall strategy but thats not going to hit the scoreboard, I got 117k with that. There is also a 5 wall easy strategy at E1, C5, H3, I4 and H6 (build in that order). this gives 6 extra land and puts the best square G6 for the quarry inside the walls.Hope that helps open things up a bit.

Thank you Rocky. I hate that it sounds like bragging, but I really do like how Castaways turned out. Even by mainstream standards, it is a pretty deep game. Its hard to make a strategy game that doesnt wind up with a single, always wins, strategy. Castaways managed that, though the walls can come a little close to that on certain missions.

Loxias, thats a great idea for a new starter/perk. Maybe one of these days Ill add it.  Be thankful you didnt use that fault that increases random disasters, because you probably would have lost 3 times as much food, Yikes!Rocky, I think theyve helped out a lot of people. Out of curiosity, have you beaten the game yet? Judging by your skill on the challenge map, I bet you could fly through the whole game with little trouble, haha. Im not yet aware of anyone beating Castaways since the 2 new missions were added.

Suggestion: Add a preservatives perk. Spoiling food really, really, really sucks. It just completely destroyed another attempt I made right at the end. An attempt I originally said I wouldnt do. So now Im kinda annoyed at the wasted time. But I guess thats how luck works sometimes.  ON the plus side, my wall placement gets better and better. I may share it a little later on.

Nice work Loxias, and thanks for the info about that house idea.Well there is just 1 more week in the contest, and Im happy to say that peoples scores have been getting really high! All of the top 10 slots have climbed over 100k, and we now have a handful of different people fighting for those spots. Plenty of new Castaways players in the community now, and several new Castaways experts!Im sure its no surprise that one of the reasons I wanted to hold this contest was to get new people to try Castaways that had never done so before. The game was getting older and older, so it was becoming less likely that new people would be picking it up to give it a try. Because I have a few games in the works that are all based on the Castaways/Daytona story line, I wanted to get more people familiar with the game, and hopefully get more people to beat the game and be excited about its story line.Keep those game submissions comi

Its true, I discovered Castaways only shortly before I found this contest. Wouldnt say Im an expert yet, but I can find my way through a mission.Hey Aprone, I did notice something while I was playing. Is mining supposed to eat up rocky terrain like stone masonry? I suppose it kind of makes sense as the miners have to dig somewhere, but the jobs guide says mining is a constant supply, yet as I tested it, my miners consumed rocky terrain farther and farther away and took longer and longer to bring back ore. I know you didnt write that part of the jobs guide, but that should probably at least say something about that, unless its a bug.

You know, I might try that next time. I just gave a second go that did beat my first though, by making better use of tomes and better wall placement as well as a few trial runs to see where the goblins appeared first. I also think I picked my perks better - I was quite right, flower power is overkill, still ended up with way more bread than I needed, even with 48 (!) molding toward the end, so I chose union smasher instead. Also dropped green thumb in favor of strong swimmers, and I did enjoy the use of the two extra people, which were no bother at all to feed, especially once I had a chef and innkeeper. Still kept strong start as my starter, I doubt Im ever going to change that, at least on this map. Defender sucks IMO as that one knight cannot hope to fend off goblins fast enough, compared to getting a strong start and getting the first crucial wall up straightaway. Brain
  food is tempting and a free 1000 points, and unlike defender the points will actually help with productivity too, but that strong start is just too good to pass up. Smuggled goods is ok but Id rather get my buildings up quickly and have those resources replenishing anyway. Hermaphrodite... I get enough pregnancies on other maps even without that (and even with Trojan man up!) so no.But will definitely try your suggestion about building then smashing up houses - for some reason I never think to destroy buildings, but I can see how it would help here. Those extra people could come in handy, especially at the part where my peasants kept doing other things instead of what I wanted which was taking those 3 pieces of leather that were clearly ready to the monastery right next door... again, destroying or at least closing buildings could have gained me a few more points here. Ah well.Oops, I have rambled. Past my bed time at that. But I hope someone gains something out

Ended up with roughly the same score, although half my vegetables rotting toward the end lost me at least 5000 points, so if that hadnt happened, I might have reached 120 k or so, what with the vegetables and the stuff I couldve had my other guys doing instead of the mad scramble for farmers at the end. Seeing 21 people take me from like 30 k to 110 k in the last 3000 ticks of the game is quite the spectacle, though.  Definitely think Ive found the wall placement I like best, though.

[[wow]], apparently I got really lucky when it came to stuff spoiling. I only ever lost 1 vegetables. Perhaps I wont be so lucky next time I play.Interesting post regarding starters, perks and faults yujin. I too tend to go with strong start, as in this game, time is incredibly valuable. In other missions I like to pick other starters, but not this one. Those ticks you save are huge.In the save file I submitted, I went for flower power and green thumb as my perks. Green thumb I might pick again, but Ill probably change my first one. Baking bread is already really efficient, flower power might have been overkill (though it did permit me to reassign my baker occasionally, as even with only one baker I frequently soared way over 100 bread). Ah I do love games with many different ways to play and configurations to try. Also tempted by flinstone vitamins and strong bones, I kept getting surges where like 4 people would get sick. Assigning a doctor meant sudden
 ly 5 of my 12 people were unable to otherwise work, a huge pain! Though it did get better once I upgraded someone to a physician.As for faults, I too chose Trojan man. Not enough time for waiting around for women to get knocked up anyway. I might try one sometime with both sweat shop and premies, but then soldiers and the like will be an absolute must, as theres no way I could fit houses in my little walled off corner.

Loxias, have you tried building houses to raise your population, then tear them all down so you can use the land for the more critical buildings? It would be an extra few steps, but I imagine toward the end of the game you could really benefit from having 5 or 6 additional people. Just a thought. I tried that in 1 game and it worked out okay, but well enough that I feel it should be experimented with more the next time I try.

A story of survival. Our ship was a wreck. We swam to the headland as instructed by our captain and leader. I was surprised there was so many smuggled goods on the shore, most other times Ive been wrecked we chose a headland with a storehouse waiting for us! The land was good, our crops would grow fast, the leader explained the 12 of us were all that was needed for such land and the difficult swim was worthwhile, I am not sure. We were all put to work like dogs anyway. Our leader gave us a map and marked places he called E1, C5, G3 and F4. He told us to build walls, but he told us to do many other things besides. The buildings we put up were in the following order: A storehouse, a hospital, a saw mill, a quarry and then the first wall. Only when the first wall was up did we make the tavern. We were very hungry. The next wall was a race to make enough stone and wood . Only then did we 
 make a vegetable farm. We had just one farmer and just one fisherman, two lumberjacks, and three stone masons and we made the last two walls to make ourselves safe. We always made time to look after the sick.No rest. We made a wheat farm, a mill, and a bakery. Often we would put up two buildings at the same time so noone was idle. After the walls, one of the stone masons was sent out as a hunter, he became a butcher after we put up his butchers shoppp. The lumberjacks never rested as after the wheat farm we put up a vineyard and needed much wood for barrels. We worked like dogs and our food resources grew, we were helped by having the busiest buildings next to our store. Our last bit of land we made a tannery, thank god we had enough cloth for the sick, we had no room for a textile. We made leather, but had no room for a monastry, until our leader pulled down
  the quarry. The clever ones then recorded some words of wisdom.Wisdom did not help when 80 of our bread moulded. We burned our vineyard and were forbidden wine. We built a second wheat farm and had 3 bakers on the go all night. At last we had our precious food store when 85 of our barrels cracked. Our leader had kept bakc a little stone and we broke up the second wheat farm and rebuilt the vineyard. So much hard work and we only made 75 barrels, but all 12 of us were rewarded with upgrade certificates at the end of the week. I still wonder if we would have done better on the other headland with the storehouse instead of the extra goods, and perhaps a couple more swimmers might have made it there. Either way, it was a blessing not to fight the goblin hoard outside our walls.

Hi all.Thanks for the tips posted here that help me a lot in surviving the mission. Here, I wish to share about my character configuration I use for the mission, hoping to compliment the tips others have postedFor starter, I choose strong start so that the store house can be built instantly. Then, I can use the time before the goblin appear to set up essential building as well as building walls to block their way. I have tried choosing smuggled goods starter, but it took me around 200 ticks to actually finish my store house, which have wasted a lot of time, since the first group of goblins appear at tick 200+.For the 1st perk, I choose union smasher, hoping that everyone can do their job faster. Faster job equals faster resources gathering. For the 2nd, I choose strong swimmers so that I can benefit from the maximum population without building houses, which is 14 population at the start of the game, since I am not planning to build houses to raise it further.For my fault, I choose trojan man, since I am not planning to raise my population, and thus no pregnant women. I guess the cozy fault is also ok, since it has no effect without a house.Thank you for reading.

This was quite fun! The tips around posts 25 to 27 or so gave me a good starting point, though of course theres still lots to figure out, like what resources to focus on when. I think Ive scoped out a couple of other fairly defensible locations, I plan to try a few more games before the month is up. I also plan to remember that each upgraded job counts separately, I goofed and misread, thinking that they were all included together, IE having a physician and a chef would only be worth 1750 together, when in reality its 2000 because theyre on their own scales. If Id remembered that I could have had more upgraded workers and consequently slightly better productivity. But ah well, for someone who didnt even know what Castaways was 2 weeks ago, I think Im doing all right.

Tried my suggestion of building nothing and going fishing, smiles. Scored 61,800 before starving around 800 ticks. Also tried building just a farm and a vineyard but nothing else. Scored 65,000 before starving.

Ive found that building a wall at:n-2m-5j-3i-4k-6gives me a nice little area to have fun in. It then becomes a trick of what to build when.I found a bug though:When you close the tannery, no one will bring leather from it to the monastery. The monk will make leather, but that is it. Closing a building just keeps peasants from bringing supplies to the building, not taking items away...and I use that a lot, especially now Im needing to destroy buildings.

Aprone has asked for some hints from folks who have scored a success or two. Dark offered his wisdom on playing the hunter, so heres my own hot tips, hopefully not too explicit, on how to play the lumberjack:Firstly, select your tree! Pick a good looking mature specimin. If your preference is conifer, theres a sweet spot just below the bushy part, near the base of the trunk. With one hand on your saw, and one on the trunk, gently guide your tool to this spot. At this point, I should point out, that if its a solo job, both hands on your tool is probably the way to go. Its preferable of course to have a partner, and finding a rhythm here is the key. After around 20 strokes your tool should have nicely penetrated deep into the body of the trunk and you can both let rip. You can ignore a few squeeks, but if the tool is a tight fit, then a bit of oil in the right place works a treat. A fe
 w short strokes towards the end is advisable. At the point of climax its not necessary, indeed its bad practice, to withdraw your tool, just enjoy the moment.It can be exhilarating, and it can be exhausting, but both of you should be able to walk away aftterwards, otherwise youve done something wrong! nobody should be crushed by the experience!.When its all over, you can say something like we make a good team!, but yelping with joy and doing a high-5 is probably bad form.Afterwards, its a good idea to clean and inspect your tool. If youve got a good partner then keep them, otherwise you can swap around until you find someone compatible. Above all, practice makes perfect - a rusty tool is no good to anyone!Some folks tell me the lumberjacks preferred tool is his trusty chopper, but some folks are just crude.

Ok, some serious tips, seems to be the sporting thing to do. Warning, spoilers and spilt beans. Quick answer: The right strategy for this map is to build walls, as many as it takes. Wall yourself in and forget about soldiers until after all your walls are built. The strategy stuff: Each map seems to require one of 3 strategies, soldiers, walls, or population. This map is small so growing your population is a luxury you dont have time for. Building in the middle of the map and relying on soldiers is again not quick enough. Building some walls and trying to stem the goblin tide is worth a try but the soldiers will drain your economy and expanding your territory becomes very slow with few workers. So walls is the way to go and fortunately its possible. The downside is that it takes time and resources but this is not as much downside as soldiers. Other maps will of course differ.The next quest
 ion is how many walls and where to put them. You have to choose between going for safety and speed or going for more territory in order to have more room to build on. My 3 games have had 3 different wall placements and Im going to try a fourth. If you find a clear cut answer where to put the walls, then please let me know.Some tips on this bit: Planning your land grab is advisable and the order you put up the walls is also very important.How much land do I need? The correct answer is - as much as you have time in the game to build on. In reality, land is scarce, having too much safe land is probably not going to bother you at this point. Its very likely land will be your limiting factor and your choice will boil down to what you have room to build. In the unlikely event you end up with expansive lands, time will be your limiting factor and your choice will boil down to what order to put up your b
 uildings. What order should I put up my buildings? Ah thats tactics and not covered in this post about strategy. Perhaps Ill do a post on some tactics later on.Is there a shortcut? Yes. Dont bother building anything, just choose smuggled goods as your starter and send everyone out fishing. Just before you starve to death, save your game and submit it.

Sorry about that bug. The game is supposed to let you save when the ticks run out on challenge. One option is to load up the saved game autosave. Castaways automatically saves your game every so often, using that file name. If you have played a new game since then, the autosave will have been overwritten.For myself, the game does stop and let me save once I reach 1 ticks, so I havent been able to fix that bug yet. Once I can reproduce it, Ill squash it.

I suggest regular saves. My last save is at  ticks and this is the saved file I send to Aprone. The other reported bug about closing buildings is not a bug. If you close a building peasants do not bring new supplies, unless they are already on their way. Yes workers will use up the supplies, but if thats not what you want, then simply reassign them.

I actually am able to survive the mission now. Ill say that the thing that canged the entire game was the starter I chose. The problem is getting the points. Even once the goblins were driven back and I had more squares to build on, I couldnt build up enough ponits and it was a struggle keeping my people fed. Next time I think I will try and keep the population a bit lower, and get rangers in on the action a bit faster. I had 5 knights before I started making rangers and so after having 5 knights and 5 rangers that was half my settlement used to defend me and I only had like 11 people doing actually important stuff like making food, which slowed me down, and forced me to build tutor houses. Rangers are a lot better for fighting goblins than knights are anyway. I got to tick like 8400, and then everybody suddenly began starving. Im not sure why, I guess hunting trips were taking too long or something. So I was forced to tap into my valuable wine barrels. Wine is s
 uper valuable in this mission because if you can build it up without having to use a lot of it its an easy source of thousands of ponits. I got 2 tomes created also. The food production seems to be where the big bucks are though, and so I have to work on that.

Nicely done Key, it actually sounds like youve improved dramatically since the last time you posted. Im guessing with a few adjustments to your strategy, youll be handing in saved games to get on the high score board. Yujin9091, what is your primary source of food during the mission? Hopefully youve been able to gain a few types of food, but what is the main one youve been relying on? I am just curious.In another thread Dark had a great post that explained the pitfalls of hunting. Hunting starts out fantastic. You get lots of meat and hides in a very short amount of time, but as the forests thin out, you get less and less. The hunters spend more time out hunting, and are more likely to bring home nothing. Players who rely on hunting at the beginning, need to be working toward a replacem
 ent food source so that they can switch (or supplement) it with something else. At the moment Im a fan of vegetable farming, but in the past Ive been a fan of other things. I guess anything will work as long as you plan it out carefully, so find one that works for you.

KeyIsFull noticed that, using the Smuggled goods starter, he could beat the score I had filled in on all of the high score spots. I have allowed it. Think of it as just a slight adjustment to my name being in the bottom 7 high score slots.His scores will not be hard to beat though.

I do build at E 2, unless you typed that in reverse by accident. Ive done both at E 2 and E 3 on different tries. Both end up blocking off the north side, but I prefer E 2 if I can get it built fast enough because it frees up E 3 to be farmland or something.B 5 does block off the first entrance, but goblins will still pour in at A 7, 8, and 9, and then work north. As long as you can build more walls to stop them, then I imagine it would work fine and give you even more room to work with. I just cant seem to get my walls up fast enough, so a single wall at C 5 seals the entire thing off for me. I lose several tiles of potential farmland, but at least I dont die, hehe.My strategy is still a work in progress, so Im sure people have some better ways of handling defense. I do get a bit closed in with my current method, so any improvements that lead to more land could be good. I dont get any people sta
 rving to death, but in the late game I struggle to hold my Eastern border (the only place the goblins can get in) while still having enough people to produce everything I need produced. Somewhere along the way I need to focus more on houses so I can raise my population.

man, this game is doing nothing but frustrating me. If I keep the goblins at bay I dont manage to get any food buildings built. I spent all my resources building 3 walls, a mine, a forge and a barracks to stop the goblins that I didnt build walls to prevent, and everybodys super close to dying from starvation. THis is tick like 1200. I guess I have to find just the right balance between defense and food, but it seems like a really hard job. The walls I have are very well placed, but I still have to put like 4 of my people on soldier duty to have an effective defense, because if I create knights, which are the easiest things to make with the buildings I have, it is slow and can only hit 1 square at a time. So even though it hits 5 times as hard as a soldier, its unfortunately the quantity of defenders that matters, and not the quality. At least, for now. That is saddening because there just arent enough people. I am not sure if strong swimmers is
  worth the increased food consumption either because food is another big issue for me. Perhaps I have to tap into my wine barrels; i usually dont put a person on bartending unless people are desperately hungry because it only serves one type of food while the cook serves the other 3, and people can get by on those 3 without ever even touching wine if its replenished. Unfortunately, its not, so I guess I ought to assign a bartender. I was so intend on defense buildings that when it came time to build a butcher shop, i didnt have enough lumber to do so, and more than half of my civilization was fighting. And everyone just kept getting hurt which forced another person to be on hand to treat them,, and also forced me to build a hospital. And land squares are extremely hard to use by this time because goblins advance onto them, so you dont have much choice until you can get the goblins out of there. The problem with that is that you need more people to get t
 he goblins out and you need mroe food to support more people but theres not enough land to support all those buildings without removing the goblins. Im not sure how rocky waters did it. But it makes me mad.

KeyIsFull, if it helps, here is the starting order Ive been going with lately. I put my storehouse somewhere between columns B and G, and rows 2 and 5. I get the tavern, saw mill and a quarry going first, with a hospital if absolutely necessary. A wall first goes up at E 2 if Im fast enough. If it took me too long to get started, I can put that first wall at E 3 and still block off all Goblins from the North. I prefer E 2 because it gives me that 1 extra piece of land later. Next I build a wall at C 5, and nothing can hit me from the South or West because of the natural forest barriers. I have about 12 or 13 total land tiles which are safe in my little cove, at least for a while before the goblins can advance to me from the East / South east. Some games I hold them back with soldiers and a guard tower until I can try to stretch walls down the eastern border of my cove, but Im also trying to speed things up so that I
  can wall of the east before I even need the soldiers. No luck yet, but I do think its possible. In either case, this gets me past the 1200 tick mark that youve been crashing at. Hopfully this helps you adjust your strategy a bit.

It was brought to my attention that the score is not counting your Gardeners, Wheat farmers, Wine makers, or Shepherds. My program that checks the save game files does count them though, so you will get those extra points if you happen to have any of those people.

If you arent using Castaways version 2.7c (not B), please update before continuing with the contest. The version 2.7b had a bug that could corrupt your save game files, giving your people like 50,000% energy and of course making the file unusable for winning any prizes. The patch fixes it, and as an extra sort of sorry, it slightly slows down the rate at which goblins advance across the challenge map. That will also give a little help to those who have been struggling to keep them at bay long enough to defend your base.

Ive been away for a few weeks and I have been reading up on all of many forum posts that happened while I was gone. In that time the community (gross generalization warning ahead) has grumbled about $5 fees for updating Shades of Doom, emptied their wallets picking up Paladin of the Sky (sweet), and tried hard to start up a few flame wars (definitely some grumpy people lately). ROFL!I think its time for a contest! Lets put some money back out there, and maybe brighten the mood of a few people. Perhaps this will help a few new people grab the Paladin game, which Im hearing really great things about! Castaways 2.7b has been posted, and it contains a game mode called Recorded Challenge. This is how players will participate in the contest. The game always starts you with an identical set of resources, 
 but after that it is up to you to survive and thrive. You have the daunting task of surviving through 1 game ticks as you earn a score based on the things you save up. At any point you can press Shift + space to hear your current score, and also list how many game ticks you have used. 1 ticks seems like a lot at first, but eventually youll start wishing you had more so you could save up more stuff. Here are how points are calculated.Knights, Rangers, Pikemen, and Cavalry all start out worth 1000 points for the first unit, but each additional unit is worth 100 points less. Having more than 10 of any of these troop types will give no additional points.All units upgraded with Tomes (Serfs, Woodsmen, Physician, ect) start out worth 1000 points for the first unit. Each additional unit is worth 250 less. Having more than 4 of any of these skilled job types will give no additional points.All food stored in your St
 ore houses or Taverns will be counted.Meat, Bread, Vegetables, and Wine all start out worth 500 points for the first item, and each additional item is worth 5 points less. Having more than 100 of any of these food types will give no additional points.Tomes stored in your Store houses start out worth 1000 points for the first Tome, and each additional tome is worth 250 less. Having more than 4 tomes will give no additional points.Lumber and bricks stored in your Store houses are all worth 10 points each. There is no limit on the amount of points you can earn on lumber and bricks.When you first start up the game youll already have quite a few points. This is normal, because you begin the mission with a lot of food and stuff. As you start to burn through your reserves, that score will drop lower and lower as you work to build your town and get on your feet. Defend yourself against the goblins (walls are your friend) a

Save your game at any time, and email me the save game file. The score you have at the time of the save, is the score I will credit you with. The program I feed these files into can tell if the original game data matches any of the other files people have submitted. So if you play 100 ticks of the challenge, save it, give it to a friend, he plays the remaining 9900 ticks, and submits it for the contest... I will not count that.
