Re: Eamon

Sadly Slj the inform community do not like Eamon, which is why ports have been so few. the eventual intention with  eamon deluxe was to port all of the classic games,   which was actua, lly going well  af  a few years ago, but as I said I don't know where development is now and sadly nobody really has got involved in much else with Eamon. The one problem with emulation, is that the best copy of the eamon main hall was the graphical one. In the bog standard bare bones text version, there is no way to improve your character between adventures or get better weapons, one  reason why people tended to either  load a super strong character from another disk or the like. for me a major plus in Eamon deluxe is that you can  take a bog standard character with below average attributes, run them through some beginner level adventures and have them  grow stronger, similarly use the gold you get for successfully completing eamo
n quests to buy better weapons and armour rather than having to cheat them into existence. Plus of course, when porting the games to the edx system, frank Black  made some changes and  additions as well, indeed in some of the adventures like the Jim  Jacobson ones he virtually rewrote separate adventures into an onrunning story.I do still have hopes he'll materialize again, and  then  hopefully not only go on porting more classic Eamons  to edx, but also create a  talking version of edx which is as universally compatible as the standard one.

Well, I use a windows xp virtual machine to play it. I got an email from Frank, the creator of Eamon deluxe. Unfortunately he did not let me know if he was planning on upgrading the remaining adventures. However, he gave me a code we can use to play all adventures even though they are not upgraded to eamon deluxe  5.0. Here's how to do it:When you choose a set of adventures not upgraded to eamon deluxe 5.0, you will get a message saying the adventures are not compatible with eamon deluxe 5.0 VI mode and you will get two choices. Do nothing and exit. When you are on that screen, press the following letters one at a time and press enter after each lettersb o r tAfter that you will be on a menu where you can select those adventures. They are not converted, but they can be played just fine.

Talking DosBox both comes with and works with this natively. I was playing with it just the other day. It's not as easy to navigate as having a virtual windows XP machine to play on, but it does work. Basically you just need to download Talking DosBox, get asap working since it's the screen reader that responds the best in the emulator and load up the game.

ACtually Seb, earlier versions didn't have all the adventures either. I tried the old 4.5, and there were less adventures available than in the current version owing to the work Frank Black did in converting many adventures, though undoubtedly there are lots of classic aemon titles still to convert across and unfortunately I don't think we've heard anything from Frank for quite a while.

Re: Eamon Adventure Browser "AKA" Eamon Revolutions

Bump!Hello all, I'm the developer of the Eamon Adventure Browser (EAB). I'm terribly sorry to report that I've mostly abandoned the project due to lack of interest from the IF/Eamon community in general and lack of time. That being said, it was pretty refreshing to see your enthusiasm here! The game engine (which allows you to actually play the games listed in the EAB) is about 80% complete. As at least one of you has noticed, the combat logic hasn't been implemented yet. The backend code to save/load characters and game instances (so you can stop a game and resume it later) has been developed, there just isn't a UI built yet. I also had a "character generator" feature that would let you "roll up" a character per Eamon specs and take her on adventures but that feature also hasn't been built - the backend logic is all there, however. This version of Eamon allowed for better object persistence (more than weapons can be b
rought across adventures) as well as a few other additional features that I custom implemented in Qbasic for my Eamon Deluxe versions of "Stronghold of Kahr-Dur" and "The Treachery of Zorag" (unpublished but available if anyone wants it).I've been actively looking for someone to take it over. The code is fairly complex, but not unmanageable. If you are interested and have the requisite programming skills (_javascript_, HTML, browser DOM), let me know! The entire project is open source and the sourcecode is readily available.Feel free to contact me here if you have any questions or feedback.Regards,Derek

Hi,I know Eamon Delux, being a 16bit program, can't run on 64bit systems like the one I have without some form of tampering. But I don't know what to do from there because both Narrator and NVDA can't read anything in the DOSBox window and I don't know if I need to input something, or what to input, or even if I have everything I need.I also tried to directly work with the VI Mode, as it has a separate shortcut on my desktop, but it's apparently not a valid program and therefore cannot go through the Troubleshooting process. Can anyone help me out? The game sounds great and if I can get it working I'd be very happy indeed.

Re: Eamon Adventure Browser "AKA" Eamon Revolutions

To be honest I wouldnt worry too much, Eamon revolutions was never intended as a full on browser port of Eamon, just to show off some of the games, (and as you noticed its not finished). Eamon deluxe is unfortunately the only really complete eamon around, though I dont know what has happened to its creaor sinse weve not had any updates or new info for about a year now which is a little worrying. The annoying thing is that for sighted players there is no problem running Eamon deluxe on post xp windows sinse it just runs in dosbox, but there isnt a way of getting a screen reader to read the text from dosbox, which is a right royal pest. Again, the Edx developer was looking into this but Im not sure how his research has gone.A real shame sinse the eamon games are awsome, indeed in the last version of Deluxe there are some of the best ones, like curse of Talan, thrors ring and several by Sam ruby.

Unfortunately, it appears as though combat has no tactics at all. If I type kill creature, it just says you killed it. Unless Im just unlucky with my target, but you can definitely tell this isnt a full version by any means. I just wish I had a computer with enough Memory to support and XP vm without it being so slow that attempting anything on it is near impossible.

Re: Eamon Adventure Browser "AKA" Eamon Revolutions

Direct from the Players Manual :1.1  A BRIEF HISTORY OF EAMON: DONALD BROWN, JOHN NELSON, AND THE NEUCEamon is one of the oldest computer role-playing gaming systems in history and certainly the most enduring. As I write this, Eamon is now about thirty years old and the gaming formula is still unique and going strong with new adventures being developed and distributed within an active online community. The original version (hereafter referred to as Classic Eamon, vanilla Eamon or simply just Eamon) was developed in the early 1980s by a man named Donald Brown. Don created a system that consisted of a master floppy disk (with the Main Hall and Beginners Cave on it) where one could store characters they had created, carry out common transactions, and be launched into a multitude of adventure settings and scenarios. Each Eamon adventure was a separate floppy disk (or disks) with a database of rooms, monsters, treasure, etc..Brown did an excellent job of simplifying complex paper and pencil RPGs (like Dungeons Dragons) and integrating that genre with the popular adventure game style (which tends to focus on puzzle solving, ignoring character development). The result was a unique gaming formula with open-ended development possibilities that made it highly appealing to both gamers and game designers alike. The name Eamon (commonly pronounced E-MUN) was reportedly picked by Brown, at random, from a nearby Irish dictionary during development.Eamon was released into the public domain as non-commercial software and Brown encouraged people to do whatever they wished with it. Brown himself wrote the master Main Hall disk, a few manuals and utilities for creating adventures, and eight adventures that showed off a variety of ways that Eamon could be expanded. He went as far as including examples of adding sound effects and even a graphic interface before completely leaving the Eamon world, never to be heard from again. After Browns departure, the Eamon reins were taken up by a fellow Des Moines, Iowa resident and computer store patron named John Nelson. Nelson started the National Eamon Users Club (NEUC) and personally continued development of the vanilla Eamon system using Browns original formulas and source code. The NEUC assigned official numbers to each adventure created for the Eamon library, which soon included over one hundred entries, and a produced a semi-regular newsletter. Nelsons development contributions included bug fixes, slight expansion of the master disk programs and a new set of utilities. Nelson, who contributed eighteen original adventures of his own to the library, standardized the base system to automate such things as doors, healing potions, and the level of light in rooms.1.2  A BRIEF HISTORY OF EAMON: THOMAS ZUCHOWSKI AND THE EAGEventually Nelson started focusing on porting Eamon to the PC and his Apple II Eamon involvement, along with the NEUC newsletter, became increasingly sparse and sporadic. Finally, in a desperate act of preservation, a club member named Thomas Zuchowski continually nagged Nelson until he finally agreed to turn over control of the NEUC library, membership records and remaining funds.Tom, who had previously authored several high quality adventures (as well as the popular character editor program that is included on the NEUCs Main Hall distributions), successfully resuscitated the club. Renaming it to The Eamon Adventurers Guild, Tom created a professional base for Eamon fans with a regular newsletter that would continue for fifteen years! Tom also personally continued to develop the Eamon system; using a mixture of Browns formulas and his own, he redesigned the database and main adventure programs to be more efficient and take up less disk space, considerably increasing the speed at which the system loaded and ran. Among other improvements, Tom also updated the manuals, made the player interface more friendly, and continued the automation of handling certain item types (including a standard system for armor and other wearable items).1.3  A BRIEF HISTORY OF EAMON: MATTHEW CLARK AND THE EAG WEBSITEInterest in Eamon had waned considerably by 2001 and development of new adventures appeared to be coming to a halt, so Tom Zuchowski started procedures to officially shut the Eamon Adventurers Guild down. By 2005 Tom permanently left the scene, passing control to a man named Matthew Clark. Matt had already spent several years building and maintaining the official Eamon Adventurers Guild website and also authored a high quality Eamon adventure of his own.As of the last count, there are 258 adventures written for the Classic Eamon system, as well as multiple utilities and customized Main Hall disks. There are also multiple cross-platform Eamon ports and cousins.Known Apple II based systems derived from Eamon are: Super Eamon, Eamon Pro, Eamon II, KnightQuest and Donald Browns own commercial Eamon clone, the SwordThr

Eamon Adventure Browser AKA Eamon Revolutions

2014-11-13 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — New releases room : Trenton Goldshark via Audiogames-reflector

Eamon Adventure Browser "AKA" Eamon Revolutions

Back in the day, (that being August 2013,) I mentioned about Eamon Revolutions, an online system for Eamonots to play Eamon adventures anywhere! And although it was an alpha project, it had a lot of promise! Fast forward to November of 2014, the old Eamon Revolutions site is offline, with the Eamon Adventure Browser taking its place. So what does the Eamon Adventure browser bring you?If you tap return on the particular title of the Eamon game you want to play, you arent actually playing it. Its like a map of sorts... You be able to explore the rooms at will, with each labeled link being a room number, thus you can visit that room on the map.If ya actually want to play that particular adventure, hit return on the Play link itself, thereby popping in to an edit box where you can type commands in. (Save/restore co
mmands of course, not enabled here.) As there is no ARIA support, best way to play is to use either the Dolphin cursor, or using NVDAs Document Review Mode. For Orca users, Ill be taking a look at EAB with that later on. Jaws users, cant say as I dont use that screen reader. Window-Eyes users? Wait til version 9s release... Yep, just wait. The Eamon Adventure Browser aint gonna replace the official Eamon Deluxe system, especially since there is no Main Hall yet, though some of you may still enjoy it, just the same!By the way, looks like all adventures, if not most of them, can be played via the EAB.Enjoy everyone!

Re: Eamon deluxe question

Hi Niclas. Firstly no, the program doesnt update, but installing new versions isnt hard. Unfortunately weve not heard from Eamon deluxe in a while. the developer was doing some great things, both porting classic Eamon games to the system and making changes and improvements, and including some modern games people were writing (runcible cargo is an absolute treat), heck there are even some Eamon reviews in there by muggins as well, and with the exception of the need for xp to run it the gamehas some great access fixes (heck Frank was even asking what punctuation screen readers were bes with and describing ascii graphics). The problem is Frank Black seems to have fallen off the map again sinse last Summer and it is a real shame. I have cent him a couple of mails but got no reply, I hopehes okay and that we see more of the game in the future. All that All that being said, there is a lot there to do and some ver
y memorable games, heck even the simpler ones are worth playing for some good old fashioned dungeon crawl treasurehunts.

Hi StepLogik,At a basic level browser games can be made more accessible just by using headings in appropriate places and by adding alt tags to images. At a more advanced level, which is I expect what Eamon Revolutions will need, you get into using aria tags in such a way that they control what is spoken through a screen reader.Definitely check out the aria-live HTML attribute here:https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/doc … ve_RegionsReading up on Aria in general is a good idea. For a good example of a working advanced accessible web based game check out Quentin C.s Playroom here:http://www.qcsalon.net/If you are bold enough to test the game with a screen reader you can download the Windows NVDA screen reader for free here:http://www.nvaccess.org/Or use the Voice Over screen reader built into Mac OS.Quentin C would be a great person for you to ask questions of since he is the blind developer who created Quentin C.s Playroom.Im happy to help where I can with any further questions. My question is, could anyone explain to me exactly how to get a virtual machine installed and running? I really dont know anything about it execpt that you can use a program called vmware player but it doesnt seem to work to well for some reason and I dont understand how you get the actual virtual machine into it? What do you have to do with the .iso file?Another thing is, does anyone have any ideas on what distribution to use to play eamon? Or is it just a personal thing? Thanks.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=144702#p144702

Re: eamon on a virtual machine?

Just for the record you can run any OS except Mac OS X in a virtual machine using VMWare Player for Windows so its not limited to Linux. What you basically do is install VMWare Player for Windows, create a virtual drive or partition, and then install an operating system into that virtual partition. Once installed you can start up VMWare Player and tell it to boot or run the other OS side by side with Windows 7 make sense? Now, if you are wondering what Linux OS is best for playing games like Eamon Id say Vinux 4.0. It is very accessible, and more importantly it has speakup access up and running out of the box. If you install Dosemu you can use Speakup to play Eamon Deluxe in a Dos emulator in your Vinux virtual machine. Now, as to Microsofts virtual XP virtual machine for Windows 7 Pro and Windows Ultimate let me just state it is not very good. It runs very slow, doesnt work as well as say VMWare Player, and costs far more than just installing VMWare
Player and using your old XP installation CD. IMO it just isnt any thing we should really consider a reliable solution for playing older games like Eamon Deluxe. URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=144724#p144724
