Serabella's f, d, df, hp isn't a launcher, I think it's a wall bounce but I may be wrong on that one. You can chain a combo after it if you're closer enough to the corner.Her normal launcher is her c.hp which you can usually immediately follow up with the f, d, df, throw move if you want an easy combo ender. Generally her c.lk, c.mp, c.hp is a good chain to start combos off as the c.mp moves you closer to the enemy.In general you want to be defending as little as possible when you can avoid it. Skullgirls has so many ridiculous mixup options characters can throw at you that you can't really react to all of them, especially at a higher level.

A standard combo for anyone is light light medium heavy. A launch is generally done with down heavy punvh. Of course there are exceptions to this rule, but for your character of choice, this should work perfectly. You can even start a combo by attacking them while you are airborn.  You can tell when you launch someone if you hit them and after a while they land on their feet or fall. To hit the airborn opponent, immediately jump and hit them after performing a launcher. From this position, you can continue your combo string, and sometimes can jump again to cintinue it some more. A good launcher for sarabella is her forward down forward heavy punch. You can even put thay at the end of a combo string by canceling into it. A cancel is when ylu immediately switch from one thing to another without needing to waiting for the move to finish. The whole combo narrative is built around cancelinv standard and special attacks, and skullgirl just happens to be one of those games that allows you to go wild with experimentation. There are some basic tips. You can take them into training, play around with them and mix things up as you please. Part of the fun of learning a character is discovering what can be comboed and canceled into what, but that should get you going. Hth.

@14 and 15 thanks for the explanations@14 how can you beat the AI on nightmare? how can you survive that long? I assume you have a good offense, since staying in defense is more hard for me, at least. When asking me what i'm having throuble with, you mean regarding cerebella, or with the battles in general? when it comes to cerebella, i don't know how to put enough things up so they can connect into a kombo, or how to properly launch my oponent into the air to catch him up with excelebella.

@arceus Do you know what in particular you were struggling with? If not it's okay, this game is extremely complicated. In general though if you can beat the AI on the harder difficulties (I can reliably beat nightmare AI) you're on the right track. Online is brutal.There are no infinite combos (at least if there are, it's probably a bug). A lot of combos may sound infinite but in reality they're resetting (essentially stopping the combo for a very brief window and the nstarting another one, there are a bunch of ways to do this).

Hey theresorry for bringing this topic up again, but i feel like i'm doing something wrong and i want some advice from fellow skullgirlls players.So i've picked cerebella as my favorite character for now, and i'm trying to master her playstyle as much as i can. I beaten aracade and story on normal, and managed to do 2 of her tryals. I went to play a quick match online, and... well all I can say is, the opponent whipped the floor with me )am i missing something when playing? how am i supposed to catch my oponent in those infinite kombos? i've watched how people play on youtube and theyr playstile seems a thousand times more fluid than mine. I guess if i would battle against someone who's blind, i would be on more equal ground... but still... any advice? Thanks a lot in advance. It would really mean a lot to me to develop my skills further in this game.

The sound actually is good enough to tell what's going on with enough practice, though yeah some stuff is unreactable without vision unfortunately. The tutorial uses the complicated notation for a reason; there are a lot of complicated combos and situations later on that would take far longer to read without it.

Light medium and hard punches, light medium and hard kicks. However, these can be changed to be low medium and high attacks. You won't be able to tell what these attacks are until you do training and set up the dummy to block at those places.You'll also come across something called a DB motion. This is down back, and there is also a df, which is down forward. some people like to do a full rotation though. The reason why you see forward and back, is because different people use different controllers. Some use fight sticks, keyboards, or controllers. It was probably just easier for the coder to refer to things as forward and back.

Its probably more accurate to refer to the different punches and kicks as light, medium, and heavy. The low high thing is specific to the classic mortal kombat games, which is something else entirely, so in this case, light, medium and heavy make more sense in terms of attack strength. A light attack does the least damage, but is the quickest to pull off. A heavy attack does the most damage, but takes the longest to perform and recover from. A medium attack is somewhere in between. A basic combo string in fighting games like this is light medium heavy. You'll learn the rest from the game, but hope this clears some stuff up.

To clarify:If you start on the left, then pressing back or left-arrow will walk backward away from the opponent (or will block, or whatnot), while pressing forward or right-arrow will walk toward your opponent.Now let's say you're on the right. Pressing forward or right-arrow will walk away from the opponent, or block, while pressing left-arrow or back will walk toward them. Back and forward, left and right arrow, are relative to your position on either the right or left, so you have to know which side of the stage you're on. As a fighting-game officionado from back in the day, I promise this all gets easier with experience. I don't know how hard Skullgirls is in particular with this sort of thing, mind you.

Thanks, folks. This is helpful. FWIW, I did find the mappings, but it also doesn't help that they're labeled with letters/attacks. I think it may have been HK, LP, etc. and it was only when I hunted up a mapping online that I mentally subbed in High Kick, Low Punch, etc. And I literally thought I needed to use B and F to move at first, which just seemed odd. I tried the arrows for shiggles, and that worked, but being both new to fighting games and to Skullgirls made that another hurdle. Wish they'd use the full names more, since it isn't like "left arrow" or "B" takes up much more screen real-estate.So to confirm, F or right-arrow moves toward the enemy, whether they are left or right from my character? If so, that makes sense and clears up some confusion. I was told to use B to move back and block an attack, and was confused why I was blocking in the direction of the character. I.e. the block tutorial seems to have the enemy to the left, then it tells you to press B. So for me, that meant moving *toward* the enemy since I'd subbed B for left-arrow.Also, are the low/medium/high descriptions for punches and kicks referring to intensity, or height? That's another thing that would be visually obvious, but makes a difference when I'm thinking about tactics.Thanks.

You said you have problems with the controls, you can remap them in the options menu.The tutorial system does a pretty good job of walking you through basic strategies for playing fighting games. There are moves called pokes that are quick and test your opponent's defenses, which can allow you to combo into more attacks. Additionally, if you learn the character roster well enough, you can determine that character's style, whether they have lots of over head attacks, low attacks, or mid range attacks. Learning this can help you form your defense against them. Mid and low can be blocked by holding down back, so it's easy to block most incoming attacks that way. So the trick is just to know when to block high. When you're jumping backwards, you're automatically blocking high, when high attacks are the only ones that can hit you, so it's a good move if you're not certain and need to buy some time. Moves have ranges, and learning these is important. Personally, I would pick one character that you like, and use them until you're able to complete the campaign for them before moving on to another character.Finally, use the training mode, and pay attention to the damage you deal. You'll notice that more attacks does not mean more damage. As your combo gets longer, the damage dealt by each successful hit is reduced. You probably won't notice this right away, but if you're able to land a 19 hit combo, you might notice that you do more damage with a 17 or 18 hit combo that uses more powerful strikes, so it's something to be aware of. Anyway, I haven't played this game in ages. I might get the PS4 version though. Hope this helpped.

Help understanding Skullgirls

Switched from Linux to Windows recently and am trying games I've been missing out on. I'm also not a heavy gamer since I'd rather play a game than figure out things that are obvious but inaccessible, so some of the accessible mainstream games appeal to me.I'm having trouble with Skullgirls. Specifically:I know it's 2-D, but are the stages single screens? I.e. should I be moving to the left or right to advance? Or do I just defeat the opponent on the particular screen and the game advances?Is there a way to have actual control names spoken? In the movement tutorial for instance, I'm told to use F and B to move. I'm guessing this is Forward and Back, and that I'm supposed to use the arrows, but the tutorial is overwhelming enough to a fighting game newbie that it just arbitrarily calling controls something else is off-putting. I'm also trying to play with a gamepad, and while I can guess what controls map to what in terms of movement, I have to look up a control mapping online and switch back and forth.Is it possible to know my health, how I'm doing, etc.? Is that even a thing in fighting games?How do you know when to duck, jump, etc.? Is it just chance and luck?Thanks, and other advice is welcome.

You can grab other characters as DLC. If you got the Second Encore DLC, you get those characters bundled, otherwise they're separate downloads, though you can still grab Second Encore and get those characters.

Help with Skullgirls

Hi all, So recently I started playing the Skullgirls game. I am playing it with a keyboard. I have been able to play the game but am not able to understand the commands for the special attacks and am also not able to complete the tutorial on the special attacks. Can someone who has played the game with a keyboard help me with this? Also, just wanted to ask, while playing in the story mode, is their any way by which we can unlock the other characters other than the two we have or will we have to play the stories of the other charactors by clicking the random?

If you havent already, try going through the tutorials, at least the basic series. It will explain special moves. Then after that every character has their own tutorial which explains what each move does and what its good for, which you should also go through, at least for whoever you want to play as.
